King Edward VI Preparatory School

prospectus

Welcome Stroud is an exciting school where children flourish in a friendly and supportive environment. Our aim is to provide pupils with a learning environment where they feel secure, confident and cared for, allowing them to achieve their full potential both academically and in terms of social and moral development. The school prides itself on its family atmosphere and ability to create a culture in which children have a genuine desire to achieve success and are happy in their wonderful surroundings. They benefit from the large area of woodland and playing fields within the school grounds. Stroud was first established as a prep school in 1926, moving to its current site of 20 acres of lovely grounds on the outskirts of Romsey in 1953. In 2012 it became the prep school to King Edward VI School, Southampton.

Enjoy We believe that having fun at school instils a life-long love of learning. From Nursery at the age of 3, through Middle and Senior School, teaching staff aim to ensure that all children enjoy their time at Stroud. Lessons are engaging and stimulate a real desire for knowledge, learning and achievement. Outside of the classroom, the co-curricular life of the school provides plenty of opportunities for involvement in sports, music, drama, cookery, art, debating, science and other activities. We believe that fun and attainment go hand in hand, allowing each child to develop their full potential. The extensive grounds, beautiful main building, full sized sports hall, outdoor swimming pool and well equipped classrooms all contribute to a stimulating environment for the children.

Nurture Everyone who works at Stroud School has a role in providing a caring and secure atmosphere for all pupils. Teaching, catering, administrative, maintenance, nursing and domestic staff all work as a team to ensure the children’s welfare. The tutor group structure allows for strong pupil/staff relationships to be developed and there is an overarching ethos of responsibility within the school, encouraging children to look after each other, as well as to care for their surroundings and the environment. Our family approach to caring for children at Stroud means that parents are actively involved in all aspects of their child’s school life. We aim to ensure that each pupil’s individual needs are fully met and that they are happy and settled, allowing them to perform to the best of their ability.

Inspire Throughout their academic studies, children are provided with a balanced programme centred on the National Curriculum. Stroud is a non-selective school and our well-qualified teaching staff carefully plan lessons to ensure that children of all levels exploit their full learning potential. A variety of teaching methods are used and the curriculum is brought to life with a host of activities aimed at inspiring children to learn. School trips, external visitors, specialised study days, practical sessions and outdoor activities are just some of the ways in which staff use creativity to stimulate and enthuse learning. Younger children have a weekly opportunity to explore the outdoors at Forest School, a study area in the woodland of the grounds where they can discover the awe and wonder of the natural world around them.

Challenge Challenge is important in developing many necessary life skills and children will be given plenty of opportunity to try new activities and improve their self-confidence and teamwork. Both inside and outside the classroom children are challenged at a level appropriate for their age and ability. Competitive sport is encouraged and all children will represent the school in matches and tournaments at some level throughout their time at Stroud. There is an active school orchestra and choirs at various age groups. Children are encouraged to perform on stage and in assemblies as well as taking individual exams in speech and drama, music and musical theatre. Public speaking competitions, gym and dance displays, Sports Day, swimming, outdoor pursuits, science essays and maths Olympiads all contribute to enhancing the children’s physical and intellectual development.

Belong At Stroud we foster a sense of belonging both within the school and wider community. Family members are actively encouraged to take part in and support as many of the school activities as possible. From our ‘snuggle up and read’ sessions in our Early Years through to our annual Sports Day, we aim to include our children’s families in school life. Older children are encouraged to help and support younger pupils and each year they are involved with the elderly in our local community. In Middle School, each child is placed into one of the school’s three sections which they represent in a variety of academic, sporting and social events. Pupils are taught to recognise their responsibilities both to each other and the wider environment.

Celebrate Just as enjoying learning is important, so is recognising each child’s efforts and achievements. In Middle and Senior School, stars are used to reward all types of achievements and endeavours, both in and out of school, and count towards the termly section competition for which the winning section receives a special treat. School assemblies are a time to applaud individual, as well as collective school successes, and the whole school celebrates events such as our Carol Service in Romsey Abbey, school plays and charity events that enable children to perform, participate and contribute. A Christian ethos runs throughout Stroud but we welcome children from all faiths, and religious celebrations from all beliefs and cultures are recognised and acknowledged. When they leave Stroud, we believe that children are well prepared both academically and socially for the transition to their next place of learning. We look forward to welcoming you to our exceptional community.
