©DUNDEE BOTANIC GARDEN; SCONE PALACE

tep back in time at majestic castles or sample whiskey while distillery-hopping across this spectacular region. You’ll explore Dundee, Angus and Perthshire on photogenic backdrops of beaches, forests and idyllic country hamlets. Love city living? There’s that too, with a wealth of museums and scrumptious restaurant dishes to devour. Gear up for seriously big days out, with something for everyone to launch into. Whether you’re into science, historic ships or big sips (of whiskey), this is a region that’s chock-full of cultural gems. Welcome to a UNESCO City of Design that’s also home to the world’s only V&A museum outside of London. Kengo Kuma designed the futuristic building of the V&A Dundee as part of the city’s redeveloped Waterfront. Permanent and visiting exhibitions join sweeping views of the River Tay and the restored RRS Discovery. Step aboard the ship that tells the story of Captain Scott’s Antarctic expedition. A bit like Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, the Discovery Walk at Slessor Gardens celebrates gifts given to the world by many extraordinary people who’ve lived and worked in Dundee. A series of plaques along the path honour the pioneering, scientific and social spirit of the likes of philanthropist Mary Ann Baxter. Explore the themed gardens while you’re there. Speaking of botanicals, Dundee is the home of Verdant Gin. Voted Scottish Gin of the Year in 2017, it’s a must-try on your visit. ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM The McManus building dominates Albert Square, a combination of Victorian roots and a grand, modern refurbishment. The art gallery and museum ensures an impressive selfie backdrop, along with the option to admire fine art and traditional sculpture. Set aside enough time to see eight galleries across two floors, with around 400 million years of history on display. The county of Angus is known as Scotland’s birthplace. Here, at Arbroath Abbey, the Declaration of Arbroath was drafted in 1320. The Abbey itself fires the imagination with atmospheric medieval ruins. Founded as a monastery in 1178, it now hosts an interpretation centre displaying how much the American Declaration of Independence was based on the 400-year-old Scottish document. Looking for a real-life Scottish fairytale? Visit Glamis Castle, which is arguably the most enchanting in Scotland. Surrounded by rolling countryside, the castle features manicured gardens, bowling lawns and an awe-inspiring drive on approach. In terms of royal connections, this was the childhood home of the late Queen Mother and it has connections with Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobites. It’s even the setting for that most theatrical of Scottish kings, Macbeth. Keen gardeners love Edzell Castle and Gardens for the stunning walled garden created by Sir David Lindsay in 1604. The Pleasance is a formal garden brimming with flower boxes and sculptured stone panels. For a taste of the humbler life lived in Angus, head to Barry Mill at Carnoustie. Purchased by the National Trust in 1988, it’s a rare, working corn mill framed by fields filled with picnic tables. Perthshire is home to the crowning place of Scotland’s kings, Scone Palace. Oozing history and character, it sprawls

“PERTHSHIRE IS HOME TO THE CROWNING PLACE OF SCOTLAND’S KINGS, SCONE PALACE. OOZING HISTORY AND CHARACTER, IT SPRAWLS ABOVE THE RIVER TAY AND WHISPERS SECRETS OF ROBERT THE BRUCE, MACBETH & THE PICTS” above the River Tay and whispers secrets of Robert The Bruce, Macbeth and the Picts. Stroll through the lavish gardens before discovering collections of antiques and paintings. You’ll also walk the Long Gallery, once the longest room in Scotland where Charles II proceeded to his Coronation. Hop in the time machine to Kenmore to visit Scotland’s oldest inn. The Kenmore Hotel was founded as a tavern in 1502 and converted to a hotel in 1572 by Laird Colin Campbell. Currently closed for a major refurbishment, it’s set to reopen in 2023. New for 2024, Perth Museum opens its doors after a £27 million redevelopment project. This world-class cultural and heritage attraction highlights the fascinating >>p17

If you’re a family of animal lovers, make a beeline for Redwings Mountains at Glenogil. It houses around 90 horses, ponies and donkeys that roam around 220 acres of paddocks and woodland, and you can spot other wildlife including red squirrels and mountain birds. THE BEST OF DUNDEE, ANGUS & PERTHSHIRE OUR TOP THINGS TO SEE AND DO WHEN VISITING THIS SCENIC REGION

TOP PICKS

 VISIT NEVERLAND

You can revisit your childhood in Peter Pan’s birthplace of Kirriemuir, with JM Barrie’s childhood home and up on Kirriemuir Hill, a themed Peter Pan adventure playground for all Lost Boys (and girls!). Also on the hill are the Cricket Pavilion and Camera Obscura, gifted to the town by Barrie.

 TAKE IN THE SCENERY

The majestic glens of Angus are spread from west to east like the five fingers of a hand, each with its own special characteristics. The county of Perthshire is well named as Big Tree Country with magnificent areas of woodland. Also the view from the top of the Law in Dundee will show why Stephen Fry once said that the city’s situation is “ludicrously ideal”.  PLAY A ROUND

It may be within driving distance of St Andrews, but this area has its own special golf courses, particularly at Carnoustie, scene of so many dramatic Open Championships. Keen golfers may also want to check availability of tee times at Rosemount in the beautiful Angus town of Blairgowrie.  DRINK IT IN

Water babies will love this area, with long walks along beaches, dips in traditional outdoor pools and the chance to drink in vistas such as the famous Queen’s View down Loch Tummel in Perthshire. Water also plays a large part in our “water of life” whether single malts or blends are your preference!

 STORM THE CASTLE

property by William Adam, featuring a superb art collection and peaceful walled garden and woodland walks.

Glamis Castle, in the Angus village of the same name, is best-known as the childhood home of the late Queen Mother. Its turrets and winding staircases are enchanting and the grounds provide wonderful walks. Loch Leven Castle is the location of the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots for almost a year before being forced to abdicate. At Perth you can find Scone Palace, the seat of Scotland’s kings.

 SOAK UP THE CULTURE

 STEP BACK IN TIME

 SAMPLE THE LOCAL PRODUCE

Visit Verdant Works in Dundee for a taste of what life was like when jute made the city one of the most prosperous in Europe. Or go further back in history to the village of Fortingall in Perthshire, where the Fortingall Yew, which sits in the corner of the churchyard, is estimated to be at least 3,000 years old. In Montrose, the House of Dun is a beautiful 1730 Georgian

KINGFISHERVISITORGUIDES.COM

Dundee Rep Theatre has the only permanent repertory company working in the UK today and it shows in the quality of the productions. During the summer months the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has a season of productions that attract thousands to the quiet Perthshire town. In Angus, the beautiful Hospitalfield House at Arbroath is a centre of music, visual arts and conferences. From the rolling fields of soft fruits in the summer to the seafood being landed on the coast, the area’s restaurants don’t have to go too far to fill their menus with the produce of local farmers and fishermen. Any visitor to Arbroath should try the famous Smokie (smoked haddock) while those with a palate for malt will enjoy a distillery trip.

 TALK TO THE ANIMALS

Camperdown Wildlife Centre in Dundee has a superb wildlife centre, including a visitor facility – visit to see bears, birds of prey, otters and many more. This area also offers opportunities to fly birds of prey at falconry centres through Perthshire and Angus.  V&A DUNDEE

The magnificent V&A Dundee opened in 2018 as an international centre for design for Scotland – the first ever design museum to be built in the UK outside London. A creative hub boasting world-class design features, the £80m V&A Dundee is home to an incredible celebration of innovation and design, spread throughout spectacular galleries and exhibitions.

Carnoustie Country encompasses over 30 golf courses and you’ll find everything you need at The Carnoustie Golf Shop on High Street. Experts help to custom fit equipment, making sure your game is best served from the outset! In Montrose, check out popular chain stores including The Original Factory Shop and M&Co. Ready to fill up on haggis and Scotch pies with sides of seasonal veggies and herbs straight from the garden? You’ve come to the right region. It’s easy to find Perthshire restaurants serving an abundance of produce from the local area. In Perth city centre, The Bothy crafts locally sourced meat, seafood and vegetables, both farmed and foraged, into a tempting array of traditional Scottish dishes. Think Carluke haggis with bashed neeps and tatties or Ayrshire chicken supreme. GROWERS, BREEDERS & FORAGERS On the North Port is the suitably named North Port restaurant, where ingredients are carefully selected and supplied by small growers, breeders and foragers. The traditional and cosy interior contrasts with beautifully presented modern dishes. But, if you want nothing more than to keep the jeans on after a big day exploring and simply order a decent beer with hearty fare, options abound in Perthshire. Pop into The Pitcairngreen Inn on the outskirts of Perth to eat country-style food in the beer garden. In Pitlochry, take your appetite to The Moulin Inn & Brewery. A pioneer in the microbrewery movement in Scotland, it first opened in 1995. The beer is – obviously – highly prized, but you’ll also enjoy the usual pub fare at the gastropub level. Looking for views with your food? Head to the Verandah Restaurant at the Atholl Palace Hotel, which serves up wholesome dishes of game and fish as well as stunning views over the Tummel Valley. The Carse of Gowrie has long been known as a fertile area for growing soft fruits, something that the Cairn O’Mohr winery seizes with both hands to make fruit wines. Visit what they dub their ‘Strange Scottish winery’, to sit

on the sun-drenched deck with views of wooden sculptures and sips of fruity tipples. The Pickled Peacock serves hearty fry-ups and excellent Scottish cheese and charcuterie boards. It’ll come as no surprise that the Angus coastal towns offer superb fish, but nowhere more than Arbroath with its famous Smokie – a piece of moreish smoked haddock. Smokies originated a few miles north of Arbroath in the tiny fishing village of Auchmithie. Here, fishwives smoked the fish in half barrels, trapping the smoke under layers of hessian sacking. Therefore, it’s only right that The But ‘n’ Ben finds new ways to feature it on the menu, including the mouthwatering Smokie pancake. Taking advantage of the strong fishing link in Arbroath, The Marina restaurant features all your local fish shop favourites for takeaway. >>p43

At the top of Reform Street is The McManus: Dundee Art Gallery & Museum, a stunning Gothic Revival-style building from 1867, which houses the city’s most important collections. Outside is a bronze of Oor Wullie, one of the city’s famous comic creations. Make your way down to the riverside to find out about the city’s rich maritime past at Discovery Point (complete with the new Discovery Dome) and onboard the RRS Discovery, the ship that took Scott and Shackleton to the Antarctic. Nearby, V&A Dundee is a ground-breaking centre for design innovation. It’s the first building in Britain to be designed by renowned Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma. If you’re getting thirsty, head to the Cultural Quarter, where you’ll find Innis & Gunn Brewery Taproom offering a wide choice of expertly crafted beers. Then the evening can be spent enjoying Scottish cuisine at a quiet restaurant followed by a show at the Dundee Rep Theatre. DAY 2 u Start your second day with a hearty Scottish breakfast at a city centre bistro then head to Perthshire. Perth is Scotland’s newest designated city and the range of upmarket shops and pretty shopping streets reflects its position as the heart of this affluent part of Scotland. If you take a small detour to Scone Palace on your way to Perth, you’ll discover the place where Scottish kings have been crowned, set in the most spectacular gardens. Enjoy lunch at Perth’s 63 Tay Street or Deans Restaurant and fuel up for the afternoon. Alternatively, pack a picnic and drive further into Highland Perthshire and choose between culture, with a matinée at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, or history at the

Pick up some famous Arbroath Smokies as part of a picnic lunch on the way to Lunan Bay, just south of Montrose. The crescent-shaped beach with its caves and woodland is the place to wander, fly a kite, surf, or just enjoy your picnic. Head inland to the fairytale Glamis Castle for much more than its grand rooms and paintings. Apart from its strong connections with the royal family as the childhood home of the late Queen Mother, it has fascinating tales of ghosts and intrigue. Only minutes away is Kirriemuir, with its famous JM Barrie connections, but arrive by car from the south and the first statue you’ll see is not that of the boy who never grew up, but a new bronze of Bon Scott, the first frontman of rock group AC/DC, who was born here. Make the most of your afternoon in Angus by heading across to Forfar for dinner. rom JM Barrie’s childhood home to a UNESCO City of Design, this is a region that’s custom-made for artistic souls. Dundee, Angus and Perthshire serve up world-class entertainment to go with fascinating museums and art galleries. Choose your favourite artsy activities and set out for adventures to inspire everyone. Whether you love street art, photography or ancient artefacts, you’ll find galleries and museums filled with treasures across Dundee, Angus and Perthshire. As the UK’s first and only City of Design, Dundee is a top choice for art lovers. Plus, just walking the streets is enough to stumble upon exciting art. You’ll find more than 120 artworks dotted around town, with a majority in the city centre. However, it’s the V&A Dundee that opened in 2018 and transformed the cultural life of the city. Massive Scottish Design Galleries host rare pieces such as the complete Oak Room by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The building itself is a wonder, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and sitting on the stunning River Tay waterfront. It complements the magnificent McManus, a neo-Gothic architectural gem that houses social history galleries alongside painting and sculpture collections. Sitting outside is a statue of Oor Wullie pointing his trusty peashooter at Robert Burns. The rascal has appeared in his own Sunday Post comic strip since 1936. For contemporary art, take a stroll through the city centre from McManus and visit Dundee Contemporary Arts. You’ll find bright, light gallery spaces, print workshops and a two-screen cinema. In Meadow Mill, Wasps Studios houses 58 artists’ studios in a converted jute mill with a top-floor exhibition space. TEXTILE PRODUCTION Pop across the road to the award-winning Verdant Works, located in a refurbished mill, to discover the history of Dundee’s industrial textile production. The industry employed more than 50,000 people at its peak and you’ll see the machines that turned raw jute from India into cloth. Watch out for some small fellows climbing on the street furniture on the Nethergate at Seabraes. These are the Lemmings, a tribute to Dundee’s flourishing computer games industry. In the middle are the penguins hopping along the wall of the City Churches, in recognition of Dundee’s links to Antarctic expeditions of the RRS Discovery. If you’ve got the energy for more, the city’s university hosts a selection of museums, including the Cooper Gallery, the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum and Tayside Medical History Museum. The county towns of Angus are artistically alive with small studios and galleries. Start at the coastal town of Arbroath and the beautiful Hospitalfield House. Classed as one of Scotland’s finest country houses and dedicated to contemporary art and ideas, it hosts an extensive programme of art events and workshops. No cultural tour of Angus is complete without a visit to the Wee Red Toun of Kirriemuir, the name given in recognition of the red stone that forms many buildings around the picturesque town square. This is the home of author JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Visit his childhood home and museum, along with the Cricket Pavilion and

Travelling with the little ones? Bring their fantasies to life at the Neverland Play Park. In the 1920s, the town of Montrose was a bohemian hotbed of free thought and artistic souls. With a cast of characters like poets Violet Jacob and Hugh McDiarmid, painter Edward Baird and sculptor William Lamb, there’s plenty to explore. Do some High Street shopping and pop into the William Lamb Studio for sculptures. For a beautiful collection of photographs and a model of the town as it was in the 1820s, move onto the pretty town of Brechin and the Brechin Town House Museum. The Abbey itself must be seen to appreciate the importance of this small coastal town in Scotland’s history and culture. In the heart of Perth, is the new Perth Museum, home to the Stone of Destiny. The new museum is housed in a heritage Edwardian building that once served as a gathering place hosting everything from markets and concerts to political conferences and wrestling matches. This historic venue has been transformed into a major visitor attraction and will feature a café, shop, learning and events spaces, as well as a major temporary exhibition programme throughout the year.

Order delicious nibbles so the grapes don’t go straight to your head at The Wine Press located on the Waterfront. One of the most popular haunts for trendsetters is Draffens, a speakeasy-inspired cocktail bar down Couttie’s Wynd. As befits the style, you won’t come upon it unless you know it’s there. Just around the corner in Union Street is the ultra-cool King of Islington. Here, you’ll drink sugarcane spirits from Guatemala to Colombia. For cocktails with a reputation that precedes them, head to the Malbar at Malmaison. If you’re looking for a big night out to really let your hair down, try some weekend karaoke at The Salty Dog. Fat Sam’s nightclub in South Ward Road might sound like a 1920s gin joint but its retro feel is closer to the present day. Then, there’s Club Tropicana that’s 80s all the way. The two-level nightclub is the spot to hit the dancefloor and watch live gigs on theme nights. As the urban centre of Perthshire, Perth, itself, is the hub of buzzing nightlife in the region. The Ice Factory has been entertaining club-goers since 1994 and features glittering events for fans of dance music. Toddle over in your dancing shoes to South Street and The Loft. The stylish club joins its sister bar, That Bar Lounge, located below.

The great country inns are usually CAMRA-friendly and stock great real ales, many of which are brewed a few miles away. It’s not all about drinking, with quiz nights, darts and dominoes to keep you going well into the night. If you’re after a more contemporary pub atmosphere, a blend of modern decor and tradition is beautifully achieved at The Schiehallion Hotel bar in Aberfeldy, with natural materials featuring fashionable twists. PARTY ATMOSPHERE You’ll enjoy hopping between a delightful range of smaller venues throughout Angus, which offer a party atmosphere on the weekends. As the second largest town in Angus, Forfar is a hub for bar and bistro venues. Chapter & Verse and The Stag both deliver scrumptious food with local beer and spirits. In the heart of Kirriemuir, the Airlie Arms Hotel is the spot for real ales, craft beers and fine wines, along with a fantastic cocktail menu. For an unpretentious night of darts and pints, head to The Craw’s Nest in Carnoustie. he beauty of Scotland lies not only in its mountains and lochs, but also in its size. It’s possible to explore so much of it in a relatively short space of time. Perthshire is the heart of Scotland and although it might be difficult to leave the area, it is the perfect jumping-off point to visit locations across the Central Belt. Stirling, along with Edinburgh, is the city that remains steeped in Scottish history. Not only at the impressive Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument, but also the Old Town where cobbled streets are lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings. If that whets your appetite for Scotland’s past, then Linlithgow is just another half hour away by car. Its historic palace was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots and overlooks a tranquil loch. On the way, the Falkirk Wheel is a stunning rotating boat lift that connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It has become an even more popular stopping-off point since The Helix Activity Centre opened nearby, with The Kelpies at its centre. The spectacular Kelpies are 30m high, making them the largest equine sculptures in the world. THE FIFE COASTAL PATH More history can be found across the Kingdom of Fife, in Dunfermline in particular, which was Scotland’s capital until the beginning of the 17th century. The Fife Coastal Path walk stretches 117 miles and takes in the glorious East Neuk with its fishing villages, wildlife reserves and beaches. At its north end there is also what many people believe to be the jewel in Fife’s crown – the university town of St Andrews. Its long history and world fame as the Home of Golf has only been boosted by the fact that it allowed Prince William, a future king, to study in peace here – and meet Kate, his now wife and future queen. The far north of Fife leads back into Dundee across the famous Tay bridges, whether travelling by rail, road or even on foot. Heading north from Dundee and Angus, Aberdeenshire offers another brush with royalty, particularly at Balmoral Castle, the summer retreat of British monarchs since it was built by Victoria and Albert in the mid 19th century. This area offers something of a pilgrimage for lovers of single malt whisky, with its dedicated Malt Whisky Trail taking in nine distilleries across Speyside. Beautiful buildings, fascinating tours, and a chance to see incredible landscapes on the way.

This is also true for the area’s Castle Trail. There are more than 300 castles, stately homes and the ruins of historic buildings across Aberdeenshire, with 18 of these included in a dedicated itinerary. It’s true to say that many people visit Scotland for the great outdoors. Kirriemuir in Angus and Pitlochry in Perthshire are equally ideal towns to visit before heading into the Cairngorms National Park, a place to explore, get active and spot wildlife. Visit the beaches in summer, ski in winter and revel in the glory of Scotland all year round.
