ENJOY GREAT DAYS OUT IN SURREY

SURREY OFFERS AN ABUNDANCE OF THINGS TO DO WITH DAYS OUT AND TOP ATTRACTIONS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO ENJOY

Picture sparkling waterways winding through idyllic villages and buzzing towns with fun attractions for all ages. The question about days out in Surrey is, how will you fit it all in? You could stroll through the lavish gardens of historic houses or take the kids and big kids for roller coaster rides. How about museum-hopping with stops at scrumptious foodie hubs?

With an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to explore, outdoor adventures top the wish list for many. The county attracts millions of visitors each year for brilliant days out. An artistic haven dotted with art galleries, museums and grand homes, Surrey offers the ultimate culture fix on postcard-perfect backdrops. Pretend to be the lady or the lord of the manor at one of Surrey’s many historical homes.

HIGH-SOCIETY PARTIES

The elegant Edwardian country house of Polesden Lacey is a great place to start, as it was known as ‘the’ place for lavish high-society parties in its heyday. The owner, Mrs Greville, threw posh social gatherings where people spilled out onto the famous lawns. Now, modern-day visitors enjoy picnics and house tours.

No building makes the most of its surroundings better than the National Trust’s Leith Hill Tower, near Dorking. The Gothic tower stands alone atop the highest point in the South East.

Climb to the top of the spiral staircase for sensational views of the Surrey Hills and beyond, even as far as Big Ben on a clear day! Next stop is Leith Hill Place, the childhood home of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. You’ll walk in the footsteps of naturalist Charles Darwin, who conducted experiments in the grounds.

With its glorious walled rose garden and magnificent Great Hall, Loseley Park has remained remarkably unchanged since Sir William More laid the first stones in 1562. On a house tour, you’ll see domestic details of everyday life resting beside icons like George IV’s coronation chair. If you can’t get enough of stately residences, hop around for afternoon tea at historic house hotels, including Langshott Manor in Horley. Surrey brims with historic treasures and you’ll travel back in time at the Rural Life Living Museum. A

collection of relocated historic buildings join the Old Kiln Light Railway for passenger rides during weekends and school holidays. Discover the Granary, the Shepherds Hut and the Eashing Chapel while the kids run around the playground or across 10 acres of open space and woodland.

Racing fans head to the Brooklands Museum, the site of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit. Discover what it’s like to speed around the famous track in a pre-war racing car at The Napier-Railton Race Experience. It’s a 4D theatre show where you’ll see, hear, feel and even smell the racing thrills. Then, check out the only Concorde with public access in South East England, along with giant racing cars.

“THE ELEGANT EDWARDIAN COUNTRY HOUSE OF POLESDEN LACEY IS A GREAT PLACE TO START, AS IT WAS KNOWN AS ‘THE’ PLACE FOR LAVISH HIGHSOCIETY PARTIES IN ITS HEYDAY”

Plenty of perks go along with a journey into Surrey’s gin, beer and wine production history. A distillery in the grounds of the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, Silent Pool Distillers takes its name from the mystical, spring-fed pool from which it draws water.

Take a tour with gin tastings and fun historical facts and myths. If wine is your drink of choice, you’re spoilt for choice while meeting the producers of the region’s famous drops. Visit picturesque Chilworth Manor Vineyard, and stroll through beautiful vineyards before the tastings commence, or head to Godstone Vineyard, which is famous for its sparkling wine. If beer’s your tipple, Hogs Back farm and brewery has a tap room and offers brewery and hop garden tours.

Surrey has a wealth of churches and chapels that display the unique history of the area. The first Cistercian

abbey in England was Waverley Abbey in Farnham. Founded in 1128, you’ll see the ruins including the fine vaulted refectory. If you’re a fan of Bridget Jones, you might recognise Shere’s quaint St James Church from the film Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

Dating from the 12th century, one of the county’s oldest village churches is St Nicolas at Wisley. The writer Lewis Carroll was a lay preacher at St Mary’s in Guildford, a church with a fascinating history that spans almost 800 years. Also in Guildford, Holy Trinity is one of Surrey’s only Georgian churches.

St Martin’s in Dorking boasts one of England’s tallest spires and St Giles in Ashtead still has Roman bricks in the walls. For a church with sweeping views, Chilworth’s St Martha’s rests atop the Surrey Hills.

NATURAL BEAUTY

With the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep, welcome to a walker’s paradise! Serious thrillseekers don’t miss out either, from treetop obstacle courses to fun-filled theme parks.

Gorgeous gardens abound in this region, including the world-famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on the border with London. Coined as the most biodiverse place on earth, the World Heritage Site is a wonderland of glasshouses, woodland and incredible rare plants. You’ll also see the Kew Palace, home of George III and Queen Charlotte more than 200 years ago.

Charles Hamilton created the beautiful Painshill Park in the 18th century as a living painting. A gothic tower and mystical crystal grotto decorate stunning scenes like the Serpentine Lake.

Children love the fairy doors in gigantic trees and the venue hosts plenty of special events for the little ones. Magnificent displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias explode across the grounds of Ramster Gardens in Chiddingfold.

The 240-acre RHS Garden Wisley is the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society. It’s open year-round, however, special events include Butterflies in the Glasshouse and its spectacular annual garden show each September.

Opened by none other than Sir David Attenborough, the Living Planet Centre is one of the greenest buildings in the country. The WWF Interactive Visitor Experience

It’s not hard to keep the kids smiling on days out in Surrey! Mess about on the river at Dapdune Wharf, in Guildford. You’ll find out about the history of the River Wey while boarding a barge, building a den and dipping in the pond. For more watery fun, Frensham Great Pond is Surrey’s answer to a day by the sea. Sunbathe or build sandcastles on the sandy beach and splash about in the calm, shallow waters.

When the kids have some energy to burn, spend the day at Go Ape just outside Farnham. The tree-top adventure park delivers heart-pumping thrills with a Tarzan swing and rope obstacles surrounded by beautiful scenery. Guildford’s Stoke Park features Wildwood Adventure with more tree-top fun on wobbly rope crossings and zooming ziplines. Hands up if you love to play golf? Topgolf Surrey in Addlestone is an entertainment venue with point-scoring golf games.

FAMILY FUN

Surrey’s theme parks offer worlds of fun for everyone. Run around the themed lands of Chessington World of Adventures to jump on the Vampire ride in Transylvania and see the Dragon Falls in mystic Asia. The little ones don’t miss out, with the Gruffalo ride and a zoo to meet new furry friends up close.

For hair-raising fun, dare to ride Stealth at Thorpe Park in Chertsey. One of the UK’s tallest roller coasters, it shoots passengers from 0 to 80mph in under two seconds. If that’s not enough, you’ll ride backwards on the Swarm! Feeling the need for speed? Spend the day at MercedesBenz World, where you’ll put a range of vehicles

OUR TOP THINGS TO SEE AND DO WHEN VISITING THIS COUNTY

THE BEST OF SURREY

 ENJOY THE RIDE!

Thorpe Park has some of the best theme park rides in the country, sure to get your heartbeat racing. Or run around the themed lands of Chessington World of Adventures to jump on the Vampire ride in Transylvania and see the Dragon Falls in mystic Asia. The little ones don’t miss out, with the Gruffalo ride and a zoo to meet new furry friends up close.

 DISCOVER ELEGANT GARDENS

This 18th-century landscaped garden spreads across 158 acres and features a crystal grotto and other mystical follies including a Gothic temple and ruined abbey. The award-winning Painshill has something for everyone and makes for a great day out.

 CLIMB LEITH HILL

Set within the beautiful Surrey Hills, Leith Hill is the highest point in Southeast England at 1029ft above sea level. If you have enough energy after walking to the top, make sure you climb up the Gothic tower – from the top you can see sweeping views across 14 counties and on a clear day you can see the English Channel to the south and the clock face of Big Ben in Westminster to the north.

 GO FOR A ROW

If the sun is shining, take a rowing boat out on the River Wey. You can rent a boat from Farncombe Boat House and paddle down the river, taking in the beautiful sights along the way. Moor at Godalming and wander this pretty town, where scenes for the romantic comedy, The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, were filmed.

 LITERARY COUNTY

Surrey is renowned for inspiring some of England’s most influential writers; Jane Austen spent holidays at Great Bookham with Box Hill providing the setting for the picnic scene in Emma, while Sherlock Holmes creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, resided in Hindhead for 10 years and E. M. Forster in Abinger Hammer for more than 20 years.

 MAKE SOME WINE

The family-run Denbies Vineyard, in Dorking, has been making wine for three decades and is now one of the largest wine producers in the UK – it is even responsible for the first-ever English rose wine to be awarded the IWC Gold Award. During harvest, visitors can see a snapshot of what a day in the life of a working vineyard

involves, starting with picking the grapes, touring the working winery to seeing the wine-making process and of course tasting the end product!

 VISIT THE ROYAL PALACE

Tucked away in the village of East Molesey in the north of Surrey, you’ll find Hampton Court Palace with its great gatehouse and stunning detailed chimneys. In summer, the Palace hosts a series of open-air concerts in its spectacular and iconic Tudor courtyard.

 TRY SOME LOCAL ALES

Surrey is home to a number of breweries, and you’ll find local beers in most pubs across the county. Why not try the chocolate ale by the Hogs Back Brewery? Or how about a pint of Crooked Furrow, Surrey Puma or Smiler’s Happiness, from the Leith Hill Brewery?

 VISIT MERCEDES-BENZ WORLD

Spend the day at Mercedes-Benz World, where you’ll put a range of vehicles through their paces

on the handling circuit. There’s even an under-16s driving experience for the kids. If you’d rather keep things virtual, there are racing simulators, including a super realistic F1™ simulator, plus Mercedes-Benz electric ride-on cars for three to five year olds.

 THE GHOST TOUR OF GUILDFORD

Each Friday from April to November, The Ghost Tour of Guildford sets off around Guildford town centre uncovering its various haunted and mysterious sites including Guildford’s most haunted building, The King’s Head pub. Discover why Holy Trinity Church is cursed, the identity of the mysterious lady in grey seen around Tunsgate, where Guildford’s criminals were executed and more on this spooky tour. OPPOSITE

SHOPAHOLICS WILL LOVE SURREY FOR ITS ECLECTIC MIX OF BOHO-CHIC BOUTIQUES, HIGH-STREET STAPLES AND QUIRKY INDEPENDENTS

They say that if shopping doesn’t make you happy then you’re shopping in the wrong place. If retail therapy is your thing, Surrey is sure to put a smile on your face. Independent boutiques line quaint, cobbled streets and modern shopping centres keep you browsing all day. Surrey’s market towns and villages really do have it all – as will you on your return home!

Do you love big-name brands and department stores overflowing with goodies? Surrey’s major shopping districts are calling your name.

Steeped in history and dotted with castle keeps and abbey ruins, Surrey was once the playground of some of England’s medieval monarchs. To this day, it’s known for

royal-like spending and high-end designer shopping, particularly in the county town of Guildford. You’ll find brands like BOSS, along with one of the county’s two licensed Rolex retailers.

SHOPAHOLIC’S PLAYGROUND

Once a busy thoroughfare alongside wharves and military barracks, Friary Street is now a pedestrianised playground for shopaholics. Pop in and out of your favourite high street stores, like Urban Outfitters and River Island, and continue onto The Friary shopping centre. White Lion Walk features a glass atrium to go with big-name brands and independent boutiques.

26 KINGFISHERVISITORGUIDES.COM

Head to Tunsgate Quarter for no less than three levels of luxury shopping joy. Set aside the better part of a day to make the most of the retail, leisure and dining venue, where you’ll shop at TAG Heuer and dine at The Ivy Castle View. Bargain-hunters don’t miss out, with independent stores hiding down winding laneways and at various High Street markets each week.

Woking’s Jubilee Square was designed to mark the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 60-year reign. It’s a fantastic public space in the centre of town to start your shopping trip with alfresco dining and retail shops in the vicinity. Just nearby, Victoria Place Shopping Centre has all the stores you could want, from clothing brands to beauty parlours.

Pick up a new outfit at French Connection or update your street style at JD Sports. Boots, Sainsbury’s and Next are here, along with favourites like The Body Shop and The Fragrance Shop. The Old Sweet Shop and Hotel Chocolat keep you going with sugar fixes. If you’ve got non-shoppers tagging along, seven cinema screens and a huge food court keep them happy.

Wear your comfy shoes for pounding the pavements in the shopping heaven of Kingston. Home to a market that

has thrived for centuries, the town’s stores now range from luxury brands to off-beat independents for unique fashion.

Food lovers can explore the eclectic stalls of Kingston’s Ancient Market Place, open seven days a week. Pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as French, German, Italian and Moroccan treats.

FASHION SHOPS

Clarence Street is the pedestrianised heart of town with an array of fashion shops leading down to the river, including John Lewis and Next. Eden Walk Shopping Centre hosts Marks & Spencer among major brands like Sainsbury’s. For more, fill your bags up at The Bentall Centre, with around 75 stores offering over 1,000 brands.

If you stumble across Kingston’s famous falling over phone boxes – officially named Out of Order by artist David Mach – you’re at the gateway to Old London Road. It’s the home of interesting shops, including Antiques of Kingston for weird and wonderful treasures.

Stop for coffee and cake at one of the atmospheric cafés on Castle Street before going back to get that item you just can’t leave without. No doubt you’ve used relaxing

Epsom Salts for aches and pains before. A visit to Surrey’s Epsom means you’ll get them from the source. Furthermore, you’ll find plenty of shopping action at the Market Place, with farmers’ markets, food fairs and antique shows.

For high street names, Ashley Place has you covered. From M&S to Monsoon and Next, fashion stores rest beside independent retailers here.

Reigate, another of Surrey’s market towns, has a picturesque town centre with a great choice of well-known fashion stores. Think Oliver Bonas, Whistles and White Stuff. The national chain stores of M&S and Boots join an array of funky boutiques. Visit Gerrards on the High Street for handpicked labels and Taylor Jayne on Church Street for quirky homewares and candles.

INDEPENDENT RETAILERS

For that unique birthday gift or the vintage find of the decade, Surrey serves up sensational independent retailers. Guildford, Kingston and Woking brim with boutiques nestled among big-name brands. However, there’s plenty more to discover across the county.

If you prefer cobbled streets and twisting lanes for a day of retail therapy, head to Godalming. Delightfully situated on the picturesque River Wey, this ancient market town features waterside meadows and canal boats resting up against the wharf. It’s little wonder that the town’s pretty High Street has acted as a backdrop for many a Hollywood film, such as The Holiday

“QUIRKY SHOPS ARE SCATTERED AMONG ITS NARROW STREETS AND HISTORICAL BUILDINGS, INCLUDING BETWEEN THE LINES FOR BEAUTIFUL GIFTS AND WATTLE & DAUB FOR STYLISH HOMEWARES”

Quirky shops are scattered among its narrow streets and historical buildings, including Between the Lines for beautiful gifts. Wattle & Daub sell stylish homewares and Merlins the Jewellers offer specialist sparkly things.

Less than 10 miles down the road, Haslemere is another delightful town with photogenic streets of timbered and tile-hung buildings. Spend the day browsing the specialist shops that reflect the town’s traditional character.

The locals are proud of Cranleigh’s reputation as a brilliant hub of independent shops. For example, the same family has operated local fishmonger, Cranleigh Fish, since 1988. Selling top-quality, traditional meat, Rawlings of Cranleigh have served the town for 30 years. Pop into the family-run department store and restaurant, One 40, for boutique gifts and homewares.

PRE-OWNED GEMS

An original concept providing premises for small, local start-up businesses, Smithbrook Kilns arose from the derelict remains of the old Smithbrook brickworks in the early 1980s. All sorts of businesses thrive within the beautiful, terracotta brick buildings, from kitchen designers to bike shops and jewellers. Buy hand-picked womenswear from The Tog Boutique and get a bite to eat at Bricks Restaurant.

Bargain hunters are in for a treat in Surrey, especially if you love to find pre-owned gems. This antique collector’s paradise hosts a number of antique markets throughout the year, including the fortnightly Sunbury Antiques Market at Kempton Park. It’s been running for more than 40 years and attracts around 700 stallholders from across the UK and Europe. A top tip is to get there early so you don’t miss out on the biggest bargains!

The historic market town of Dorking has a bustling shopping scene including quirky boutiques, crafts stalls and art galleries. Dine amid Art Deco detail and gorgeous gardens – with champagne, of course. If you don’t spot any famous faces here, you’re bound to just walking around Cobham’s celebrity-filled streets. When it comes to foreign fare, Surrey has more than enough choice to whet your appetite. Though the top of a car park doesn’t sound glamorous, Guildford’s Thai Terrace makes it so. Enjoy views from the top of Castle Car Park as you savour Thai-style steamed seabass with fresh lime, garlic and spicy chilli sauce. Then, stop by for an exotic cocktail on the Palm Terrace.

Tucked away just off Guildford’s High Street, Olivo and Positano both serve traditional Mediterranean cuisine from cosy, ornate buildings. Carlo’s Trattoria has thrilled guests with seriously good Italian food for over a quarter of a century in Newlands Corner. Carlo Crosta himself deserves the credit for the restaurant’s fun and friendly atmosphere.

Lebanese food is trending, and Surrey offers a great pick of restaurants serving mouthwatering Middle Eastern dishes. Get your fill of authentic mezze at Meejana in

Head back east and drive up the long stately approach to Loseley Park, an Elizabethan country house which has been owned by the More-Molyneux family since the 16th century. You can take a tour of the house and learn all about its past.

Visit the stunning Mayfield Lavender fields in Banstead and marvel at the 25 acres of blue fields. The farm’s owners allow visitors to walk freely through the plants and benefit from its calming effects, while the on-site shop provides a huge selection of products made from the lavender oil produced there so you can take some away with you.

Pop into the market town of Dorking, where you’ll find a host of popular and independent restaurants, as well as cosy bars for a pre-or post-dinner drink – many even serve wine from the local vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate. WELCOME TO THE NIGHT

THE NIGHTLIFE IN SURREY IS THRIVING, PACKED WITH CLUBS, PUBS, BARS AND LIVE MUSIC VENUES

After a brilliant day of adventures on nature’s stunning backdrops, the action doesn’t stop when the sun goes down on Surrey. Loads of pubs, a legendary arts scene and plenty of bars keep you going until it comes back up again – if you’re in the mood. Most of the nightlife venues are in and around the larger towns. However, if you’re staying off the beaten track, just ask the locals about what’s happening on the doorstep.

BIG-NAME ACTS

Fancy a night out at the theatre or live music under the stars? From local musos to international acts, Surrey shines the spotlight on evening entertainment. Talented local performers join big-name acts across Surrey’s extensive portfolio of theatres and community arts centres. Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud is a leading regional theatre with a showstopping programme of entertainment throughout the year. Opened in 1965, the stage sees both established artists and youth groups impress audiences with ballet, opera, comedy and contemporary dance. Check the schedule for film seasons and art exhibitions to add to the cultural feast.

You’ll love the state-of-the-art acoustics at Woking’s New Victoria Theatre, which opened in 1992. The Royal Shakespeare Company has graced the stage, along with the National Theatre. Choose from orchestras, musicals, comedies and tribute shows here, and at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre. The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema brings the glitz

and glamour to you in Redhill, with a main auditorium for a range of shows and a boutique cinema showing the latest movies.

After a wonderful day of shopping and dining in Kingston, catch a touring show at Rose Theatre. Founded by Sir Peter Hall, it was modelled on the original Elizabethan Rose Theatre on London’s Bankside. For more than 50 years, Farnham Maltings creative arts centre has delivered programmes and participation workshops for rural communities. You’ll see everything from razzledazzle musicals to rip-roaring comedies. Most of Surrey’s larger towns offer cinemas for a night at the movies.

Many of Surrey’s theatres hold live music shows, especially tribute shows featuring everyone’s favourite stars. You’ll also find local musicians in pubs and bars from the countryside to the bright lights of the larger towns. The Boileroom in Guildford packs a ‘big night out’ punch as an award-winning, live music venue. Delve into Surrey’s underground vibe with fantastic bands and an in-house noodle bar.

From Burn the Floor to the BBC Big Band, G Live is the home of big-name concerts in Guildford. You’ll also enjoy shows just for kids, comedy acts, talks and workshops. Tap your toes to catchy tunes at Watermill Jazz in Dorking and rock the night away with garage and punk bands at Kingston’s The Fighting Cocks. Is opera more your style? Spend a night at Theatre in the Woods in the grounds of

West Horsley Place. In summer, this is where Grange Park Opera hosts a season of famous operas.

For an evening of rolling in the aisles, Surrey offers a range of comedy clubs guaranteed to give you some jolly good laughs. Crack Comedy Club resides at The Grey Horse in Kingston, while The Electric Theatre on Onslow Street in Guildford hosts the monthly Whole Lotta Comedy Club. The giggles available at G Live revolve with the programme, however, Hellfire Comedy Club is a regular. Dorking Halls hosts the hilarious Screaming Blue Murder Comedy Club monthly.

As you probably know, Surrey is well known for having its fair share of racecourses and it’s not all about daytime action. Epsom Downs, Kempton Park, Lingfield Park and Sandown Park all hold twilight race meetings between March and October. At the height of the season, look forward to music concerts that attract top performers. The stages have seen the likes of UB40, Pete Tong and Craig David.

Whether you like to bop your head as you sip a local craft beer or dance like no one’s watching, you’ll find a nightlife scene to suit you in Surrey. Without a doubt, the county is best known for its fantastic pubs that are perfect for post-rambling drinks. However, when the sun sets these venues come alive with friendly locals and visitors alike. Many showcase local musicians and put on open mic nights – if you’re feeling brave enough to get up and show off your vocals.

ALL NIGHT LONG

Kick off your night in the county town of Guildford, where you’ll find a number of pubs for a relaxing pint overlooking the River Wey. The White House provides nautical decor to match the water views and features theme nights like Beer Mondays with bargain prices. Sit in Swiss-style outdoor cabins at The Weyside for a romantic wine or cosy up by the log-burning fires in winter.

For live music and sports on the big screen, spend the night at O’Neill’s, coined as the original Irish bar in Kingston. Both contemporary and cosy, The Black Horse is a popular spot for friends to meet up in the beer garden or stables that seat up to six people. Pub-hop around Farnham, starting with food, wine and beer at the Bat & Ball. Beer is what they know best at The Alfred Freehouse, with six cask hand pumps that rotate to provide some of the best real ales and six keg lines for independent breweries.

Ready to boogie all night long? Clubbers love Boogie Lounge in Epsom, a late-night party venue with regular live music and DJs spinning the tunes. There’s always something creating a buzz at Pryzm in Kingston, with Fix Fridays and Lyfecode Saturdays bringing the UK’s top DJs. Alternatively, head underground to Bacchus Late Bar, a cellar bar and nightclub that puts on everything from jungle to indie nights.

Everyone hits the dancefloor at Guildford’s Thirty3Hz, especially for themed special events and celebrity DJs. Casino Nightclub doesn’t have any tables for gambling, but it is Guildford’s largest clubbing venue with two rooms pumping club classics, RnB, grime and house. Love a 70s tune or two? Take your disco shoes to Popworld and dance on flashing coloured tiles.

From classy wine bars to bubbly cocktail lounges, Surrey’s bar scene has something for every mood. Drink bold cocktails and dance to the sounds of resident DJs at the Long Bar Late in Guildford’s Harbour Hotel. Komo is another sophisticated cocktail bar that also offers masterclasses if you want to know the science behind mixology.

Dress up for gin and experimental cocktails at Hummings, an upmarket venue in Esher that’s a café by day and a slick bar at night. In Oxted, combine your cocktail with a hearty steak dish at Cattle & Cocktail, where fresh ingredients are the delicious secret for both. Botanical flavours enhance your night at the Botanist in Farnham, where you’ll savour drinks like rhubarb and sage spritz, poppy and berry punch and strawberry and elderflower mojito.

Time your trip with one of Surrey’s fabulous festivals for non-stop fun after dark. In the summer months, the county explodes with open-air performances. Gatton Community Theatre relives tales of the Surrey Hills from the grounds of Gatton Park. The spectacular Guildford Castle Gardens set the scene for Guildford Shakespeare Company’s annual summer productions.

You’ll find a number of open-air cinema nights held across the country, at venues like Guildford Cathedral, Priory Park in Reigate and Painshill Park in Cobham. Each year, Hampton Court Palace hosts a festival in the stunning Tudor Base Court of the palace. World-class acts, like Tom Jones and Alfie Boe, perform and spectacular fireworks set the sky ablaze. Book tickets early for festivals including Ripley Rocks in Ripley, Weyfest in Tilford and Kew the Music in Richmond.

Just popping down to the local village pub in Surrey hints at a good night out. The county is filled with artistic souls showcasing their talents, along with state-of-the-art venues attracting many of the top touring shows. Whether you sip fine wines by the river or let your hair down at a rock pub, expect a great night out for all.

READY TO EXPLORE A LITTLE FURTHER?

ALTHOUGH SURREY HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH TO KEEP YOU BUSY, A JOURNEY FURTHER AFIELD CAN MAKE FOR AN EXCITING NEW ADVENTURE

While Surrey has plenty to offer in its own right, its position slap bang in the middle of the Home Counties makes it the perfect base from which to explore all that the South East has to see and do including, of course, the capital.

Whether you fancy dinner and a show in London’s West End, or a day touring the wonderful sights, such as The Shard, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, the city is never more than an hour away by train from Surrey.

In the north, the county borders Berkshire giving easy access to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Walk the Long Mile up to Windsor Castle and then tour the place which was well known as the late Queen Elizabeth II’s second home.

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD

Windsor is also home to Legoland – the second most visited theme park in the UK and a great day out for families with younger children – and, just six miles away in the village of Ascot, Ascot Racecourse, famous for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes held in July, hosts race meetings throughout the year.

From Reigate in the east of Surrey and Cranleigh in the west, it’s just a quick hop across the border and you’re in Sussex. The city of Chichester, in West Sussex, with its magnificent cathedral and famous Festival Theatre is under an hour’s drive from the Surrey/Sussex border and there are plenty of interesting pit stops along the way, from pretty Petworth with its stately house, to Midhurst, where you can stop off and watch the polo at Cowdray Park.

Surrey also makes a great base from which to head south to the coast. Whether you want to hang out with the hipsters in Brighton, eat fish and chips at the famous Blue Dolphin Fish Bar in Hastings or build a sandcastle among the dunes or on the long stretch of beach at West Wittering, the seaside is never far.

Portsmouth, in Hampshire, is hugely accessible via the A3 and, while it isn’t famous for its beaches, there are plenty of fun things to do. Home to more than 90 retail outlet stores, more than 30 restaurants, bars and cafés, a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley and casino, Gunwharf Quays is a great destination if the weather isn’t on your

side, while the 170-metre tall Spinnaker offers far-reaching views across The Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Talking of the Isle of Wight, ferries head there from Portsmouth every 30 minutes so it’s easy to make a day trip to the island.

In the summer months you can enjoy fantastic events including Cowes Week Regatta and the Isle of Wight Festival, while in the quieter, winter months popular tourist attractions such as the world-famous Needles, Godshill Model Village and Blackgang Chine usually remain open.

But whichever direction you head in from the wonderful county of Surrey, you will find plenty to see en route, ensuring the journey is just as pleasurable as the destination.
