The Snowflake appeal exceeded our expectations, with local organisations, businesses and individuals keen to support the project. A sum of £11,000 was raised which ensured that East & West Quays were lit from the bridge to the Lifeboat station. Despite the bad weather leading up to Santa’s arrival weekend the event took place and Santa was still able to make his annual trip to Looe. Thank you to the Town for working together to overcome many obstacles. The Fundraising efforts for Christmas and New Year 2016 have already begun with a Grand Raffle being drawn on the 31st March (Tickets available from various outlets in the Town). There will a number of Fund raising events planned during this year, we will keep you posted.

Featuring 15 of Kodo’s highly trained Taiko (Japanese percussion instruments) performers, ‘MYSTERY’ is the second touring work to be directed by the company’s Artistic Director, the celebrated Kabuki actor Tamasaburo Bando. Hailing from the remote Sado Island, Kodo is the first and most influential Taiko ensemble in the world, comprising a troupe of musicians and dancers who transform centuries-old traditional Japanese ritual and performing arts into exhilarating, contemporary stage shows. “With this new show ‘Mystery’, my aim is to create just that: a world of mystery. In the folk arts that have been handed down through the generations in Japan, there’s a form of sacredness, an air of mystery within prayers which, in our show, is expressed by the drums. Our aim is to touch audiences as well as entertain them so they can feel that same, incredible air of mystery. I’m hoping that audiences who come to see our show in February will experience a similar sort of other-worldly splendor, a spirituality that you sense in a Japanese temple or shrine.” says Tamasaburo Bando.

KODO is a professional Taiko drumming troupe that made its professional concert debut in Berlin in 1981. Since then Kodo has smashed box office records all over the world; performed over 5,600 shows in 47 countries on five continents; built up a huge international following and gained celebrity fans from maestro percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, to world famous choreographer Akram Khan; from trip hop band Badmarsh & Shri to the producers of ‘Stomp’. This multi-award winning company is based on Sado Island, Japan. The word ‘Kodo’ has two meanings: ‘heartbeat’, the primal source of all rhythm and ‘children of the drum’. Although Taiko are the primary instrument in their performances, other traditional Japanese musical instruments such as fue (flute) and hand-cymbal make an appearance on stage along with dance and vocal performance. Kodo’s repertoire includes pieces based on the traditional rhythms of regional Japan, pieces composed for the company by contemporary songwriters, and pieces written by company members. Rigorous training and athletic ability is essential; some of the drums weigh hundreds of pounds.

Jools Holland Raises Roof Last year’s festivities came early at the Plymouth Pavillions as Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra took to the stage and completely stole it! Friday 12th December 2015 surely was a night to remember for anyone lucky enough to witness “A Class Act” from start to finish. The Orchestra consisted of five Saxophonists three Trumpet players, three Trombonists and Mr Hollands friend and legendary drummer Gilson Lavis, who in his own right stole part of the show with an amazing drum solo, that lifted everyone (including awkward me) from their seats! The supporting act was Adam Double who, with just an acoustic Guitar and a powerful young voice sang a collection of his own work beautifully. One to look out for I feel. Throughout the evening Jools took us on a journey through his band, offering an array of popular and unique Soul, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues originating from a pair of hands on a Grand Piano that simply “Boggled the mind”!! Accompanied by various artists including Mabel Ray, Louise Marshall, KT Tunstall with a great performance of her hit “Suddenly I see” and of course the Boogie Woogie Queen herself Ruby Turner the songs just kept coming and the audience became more and more ecstatic as the evening came to a close. Well done yet again Mr Holland and all who entertained us. After your previous preformance at the Looe Music Festival in September and now this, you’ve really spoilt us down here with “Good Music” and real talent.Please return soon. May I also say that the Pavillions Staff and facilities were as ever very organised and made my wife & myself feel very comfortable throughout the evening, including very professional security, which lets face it we all should appreciate!

2TONIC are without doubt THE most unusual and unique duo operating in SE Cornwall and the surrounding areas and with over 30,000 views on YouTube they have definitely made their presence known, not just in South East Cornwall but also across the globe. Simply put, they look odd, - one stands and plays a 2 foot curved twig with a string on it, whilst the other plays drums and guitar at the same time! Yet the sound they produce is full and rich with many subtleties too. At times you could close your eyes and imagine there is a four piece band on the stage. Formed in 2007 for a one off gig as a Medicine Head tribute act (hence the name – Med. Head were predominately a two man band) 2TONIC have improved year on year and have a steady stream of bookings as a result and over 500 gigs experience, averaging 60+ a year! 2TONIC are Mark Richardson on Vocals, Mouthbow, Jews Harp and Harmonica and Andy Boddington on Bass Drum, HiHat, Guitar and Backing Vocals. Either crammed into a corner of a Cornish pub, on a grand festival stage or on a stage at a top venue in London 2TONIC always rise to the occasion and have gained many favourable reviews as a result. Mark and Andy actively encourage audience participation and provide an array of percussion instruments for any willing audient to join in! James Shead is a name that is already well established on the local music scene in Cornwall. In fact, it’s a name that is building an incredible following around the rest of the UK. Having seen James perform live over the years and followed his music, we decided to shed some light on this unique singer-songwriter’s journey, from humble beginnings to now. James is a singer/songwriter based in South West England. His music is an exciting combination of acoustic driven folk-rock & roll, delicate heart felt music with a powerful gravel voice which delivers lyrics of intimacy based on memories & experiences of his own and people around him. James released his debut album “A light for the fires” in June 2015 at a sold out launch gig, followed up by a string of festival dates and headline shows in London. The album follows two iTunes-charting EPs which established him as one of the best new singer-songwriters in the South West. Now, ‘A Light For The Fires’ will propel him to national recognition. Although he shares musical DNA with some of the current crop of singer-songwriters, what sets James apart from the crowd is a knack for soaring choruses and a rich, powerful voice that can alternate between a cathartic holler and a soothing whisper. The album is a collection of songs depicting love, loss, memories and stories, most of which are penned from James’ own experiences as well as friends and loved ones around him. The opening track is a haunting reflection to brave fishermen, RNLI servicemen and other people who serve on the sea. James has always stated that the part of Cornwall

that he calls home is a big inspiration for him. As well as a musician he is also a keen surfer, so a love and respect for the sea was destined to have a heavy influence on his writing. The lead single from the album “Own Way Home” is a heart felt and moving story of relationships, penned with moving lyrics. The video for the single was shot during an evening in central London. A simple but incredibly affective narrative, shot amongst the beautiful evening light the capital affords. Its these incredibly open and honest songs, that means his album instantly draws you in and lets your imagination re-create the situations he is singing about.

Excuse 1: I don’t have time to exercise

Workouts don’t necessarily have to be lengthy or laborious if you’re looking to lose weight or get healthier. A short, sharp sweat session will see you bid farewell to hundreds of calories while targeting a whole range of different muscle groups. ‘Three to four times per week is ideal – this still leaves another three to four days a week when you don’t have to exercise. High-intensity interval training sessions could be as short as 10 minutes, and the best way to ensure that it gets done is to prioritise and diarise. And if you think you don’t have time, try keeping a log of how you spend your time and re-evaluate what’s important,’ says Joanne.

Excuse 2: I live too far away from the gym

Brrrr! When it’s freezing cold and chucking it down outside you’d probably prefer a date with your duvet over dragging yourself all the way to the gym – especially if it involves an epic commute. We get it. Even those of us with the loftiest intentions can falter when inconvenience thwarts our fitness plans. ‘There’s no point in joining a flash new gym if it’s a 15-minute drive away, which you might not fancy after a long day at work. Much better to join the more basic gym at the end of your road. Then you’ve only got to find time for the workout, not the workout and a journey,’ says Joanne. Gym still not near enough? Try out a range of fitness DVDs and apps that fit easily into your lifestyle

Excuse 3: I’ve lost my fitness mojo

Having a dip in motivation every so often is normal and if that means you miss a few sessions, so be it – but don’t let that derail your efforts to get back on track. ‘If you do skip a few workouts, remember that the longer you leave it the harder it’s going to feel when you go back. And consider how far you’ve already come – do you really want to waste the effort you’ve already put in? Capitalise on the progress you’ve made so far and stick with it,’ advises Joanne.

Excuse 4: I find exercise boring

Exercise doesn’t have to be difficult and unpleasant. Ease yourself into it and up the ante when you’re ready. ‘Find something you enjoy. This is an obvious one, but so many people treat exercise as a form of punishment, as something to be endured not enjoyed. But there are dozens of different forms of exercise which you might find more fun, from dancing to rock climbing,’ says Joanne. And, if you get bored of your routine, switch things up a notch by trying new classes, working out different body parts and varying the intensity of your workout.

Excuse 5: I’m not seeing results

Let’s be realistic; you won’t see results overnight, but the more dedicated you become, the faster you’ll see improvements in your overall fitness and your figure. ‘Be patient, give it some time, and remember that exercise has long-term, ongoing health benefits beyond body shape,’ says Joanne. Driving in the winter is very different than in other times of the year. Adverse weather and longer periods of darkness (especially after the clocks go back at the end of October) makes driving more hazardous. Sometimes conditions can be extreme, as we have found out over recent winters, with prolonged periods of heavy snow and floods. This means that we need to adapt the way we drive. Different weather conditions create different hazards throughout the Winter and in different areas of the country at different times. A single journey may take us into very different weather, road and traffic conditions, so we need to be prepared for each one. The following tips may help you cope better with the various seasonal weather hazards. There is a much better chance of being reunited with your dog if he goes missing if he is fitted with a microchip. A microchip is a very small rice grain size chip that is injected just under the skin by a vet or trained implanter. It has a unique number that is linked to the dog`s owner. The details are registered on a database, the largest of which is the Kennel Club Pet Log service. When a pet is found it can be scanned by an organisation or vet and the owner can be contacted. It is important to update the database of any detail changes. The microchip can also be useful to help prove ownership should there be a dispute.

Hay or haylage - which is best for your horse? Should owners choose hay or haylage? Which is best for their horse or pony? There are so many myths surrounding both, probably more so with hay but that is only because hay has traditionally been around for much longer than haylage! The main principle for conserving forage (usually grass) for future feeding to horses is to reduce moisture content and/or oxygen to stop the natural decay that normally begins following mowing in the field. When making hay the water content of the hay crop must be reduced from 65-85% to 20% or less over three to five days. This is achieved by sun drying in the field or air/heat drying in a barn for barn dried hay. Haylage on the other hand, is wilted to a water content of 45-50%, before being wrapped to enable “pickling” of the crop in an oxygen free environment, this is known as ensiling. Haylage therefore does not need as much drying time. When haylage was first made for horses, it was cut earlier in the year when grass is lush, higher in protein and energy and lower in fibre, perhaps too much for most horses and ponies! Nowadays though haylage for horses tends to be cut later as the end product is more suitable.

HOMEIMPROVEMENTS Are you covered for storm damage?

As our climate continues to change , more and more homes suffer from various types of Storm damage. You’ll be thankful then you can claim on your home insurance to cover the cost of any damage. But can you be sure it will pay out? Buildings insurance policies, for example, will cover any financial loss caused by storm damage, but problems can arise if you and your insurer have differing views on what actually constitutes a ‘storm’. Then there can be issues around whether the damage to your building was, ‘caused by a storm or whether any damage caused during a storm was predominantly caused by that storm.’ Confused? Read on…

When is a storm not a storm?

Although your buildings policy will cover you for ‘storm damage’, there’s a good chance it won’t come with a definition as to what exactly constitutes a storm. So you’ll have to assume that a storm will generally involve high winds and a mixture of rain, hail or snow. Or all three if you’re really unlucky. And then there’s the issue that storm damage can be caused to your property by other extremes of bad weather but without any particularly high winds. To define exactly what a ‘high wind’ is, insurers will often look towards the Beaufort Scale, which categorises wind speed on a scale of zero to 12, and only winds above a certain point on this scale will be classified as ‘storm force’ and severe enough to do damage to a property.

And none of this is any good if your house has been damaged in a storm but the wind speed means it doesn’t quite make the cut! So check the terms of your policy and check the Ts and Cs. If the guidelines around storm damage are unclear, get in touch with your insurer to see where you stand.

When is a storm not a storm?

The condition of your property can also play a part in whether or not your claim for storm damage is successful. For example, if any part of your property was deemed to be in a poor state of repair before the storm hit, there’s a good chance your claim won’t be upheld. Most policies will stipulate the building must be in ‘good shape’ and some may even exclude damage caused by wear and tear or gradual deterioration, which may be listed as ‘gradually operating causes’. Roof tiles are a notoriously grey area and if it is deemed they would have been displaced regardless of whether or not a storm hit, your claim won’t be upheld. If a roof tile blows off your house and hits

your car, this won’t be covered under a home insurance policy and a claim will have to be lodged with your car insurance company. Similarly, if a tile blows of and hit someone else’s car, they’ll have to claim on their car insurance and the matter is out of your hands – though irate car owners can take a bit of persuading. Even if a tree blows down during a storm and hits your house, something which seems commonplace during storms in the UK, you may not be covered for this so check the terms of your policy. If a tree has been blown down during a storm but has caused no other damage to your property you may find the cost of removing the tree is not covered.You may even find that you can’t make a claim if a falling tree has demolished part of your house so, once again, check your policy and if you’re not covered it may be worth adding some limited cover for an additional premium. Other problems can occur if there is damaged cause by large volumes of snow – if the offending snow fall occurred during a storm then it’ll most likely be classed as storm damage. If, however, it gradually builds up during a number of flurries, it probably won’t be. But what can you do if you’re unhappy with the decision your insurer has reached regarding your claim for storm damage?

They have all recently been awarded NVQ 3 qualifications following new laws requiring all fitters to be recognised as competent in their trades. Most companies settled for the basic NVQ2 qualification but as our fitters had already passed this some years ago we

FLOODGUARD is a unique flood protection system designed to fit into all kinds of building structures as a temporary barrier for use in openings such as doors and windows. Floodguard is a made to measure product and its installation could be considered a DIY activity. (An installation service is also available.) The installation provides two, permanently fitted, side mounting brackets fixed to the door frame. The FLOODGUARD panel can be secured within these brackets and held in place with a simple shoot bolt locking mechanism. A seal against the door frame is achieved by the panel’s unique pneumatic system. You simply inflate the device (air pump provided) allowing the panel edges to mate with and seal against the door frame.
