Trainer Profile: Philip Hobbs
Stable stars unveiled at Exeter Racecourse Philip Hobbs is widely regarded as one of the finest trainers in the country, his gift for readying horses, coupled with his mild, self-effacing manner, marking him out as a true ambassador for the sport. Based on the foothills of Exmoor, he has trained since 1985 and bagged all but a handful of the country’s biggest National Hunt races including the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Tingle Creek with Flagship Uberalles, the Champion Hurdle with Rooster Booster and the Hennessey with What’s Up Boys. At Exeter Racecourse, winners are a regular occurrence, and right through the season, from October until May, the chances are he’ll unleash a future star which will start off quietly in a novice race before going on to much greater things. Philip explained: “It’s a really good galloping track and is definitely one of my favourites for both novice hurdlers and chasers. The ground is really well looked after and there’s a great team there. If it’s the right race, and the right ground, then I’ll always run my horses at Exeter.” Fingal Bay, one of the highest rated novice hurdlers last season, is a prime example having won on his racecourse debut at Exeter on February 13, 2011. He started at the inauspicious odds of 9-2, and went on to annihilate the field by 22 lengths.
He won his next four outings, and while he missed the Cheltenham Festival, his season concluded with second to Lovcen, another former Exeter runner, in the Grand Sefton at Aintree. “He’s very exciting and he’ll now go novice chasing. If there is a race over two and a half miles at the right time, then he’ll go to Exeter,” said Philip. On May 8, Princely Player won a novice hurdle at the course, and Hobbs is hopeful he has a decent future over fences. Bold Henry was another very impressive course winner in May and before he begins his chasing career, a novice hurdle at Exeter is on the agenda. “They are both nice horses and we are hopeful they will progress to become very decent. If we can find the right races, they may run at Exeter in the autumn,” he said. Philip has saddled two winners of the Haldon Gold Cup – Monkerhostin and Planet of Sound – and this year Menorah, will be aimed at the racecourse’s richest race. “It’s a nice race to win and a very good starting point for him. If he wins, and he would have to win, we will then perhaps consider the Tingle Creek,” he said. With Exeter clearly playing an important part in the education of Philip’s horses, more future stars are sure to be unveiled this season.

Curtain Raisers October 11th and 23rd 2012 Thursday, October 11th The South West Athletes Celebration Day
Tuesday, October 23rd Best Mate Novice Chase Day
The new season begins at Exeter on Thursday, October 11. The atmosphere at the racecourse will be electric, as the day draws closer, the turf will be manicured to perfection, the white rails will be gleaming and the fences standing to attention in readiness for our first runners. After a five-month break, we can’t wait to welcome back our old friends, greet new one’s and watch racing action on top of Haldon’s glorious hill.
Best Mate
Mary King The London Olympics are now firmly installed in the annals of history, but we’d like to remember our wonderful successes with a day to celebrate the achievements of Team GB – particularly those athletes based locally. We’ve named one of our races after eventing legend Mary King, who was brought up in Devon. Mary has represented Great Britain at six Olympics and won team silver at Greenwich Park with Imperial Cavalier and we look forward to welcoming her and other stars on the day.
Old friends and new
Come along to Exeter and see for yourself why racing as a sport is renowned as one of the best ways to establish new friendships and maintain old. While you are standing at the paddock, examining the runners, it’s the perfect opportunity to strike up conversations with virtual strangers about which horse is likely to win!
Another star who is remembered today is the legendary racehorse Best Mate and our beginners’ chase is run in his name. The three-times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, who won over £1m in prize money, began his glittering steeplechase career in the equivalent race in 2000. The Best Mate Novice Chase is renowned for attracting some of the country’s very best horses like the 2009 winner Tataniano. The novice chase run over three miles also attracts top horses – in 2010 Quinz was cheered home to success and he followed up with a win in the prestigious Racing Post Chase. n F irst race: 2.10pm* Tickets from: £13 (if booked in advance) Packages from: £25 Restaurant from: £69pp (inc Admission) Private box from: £59pp + VAT (*Race time subject to change)

Haldon Gold Cup Day Tuesday, November 6th 2012 This is Exeter’s richest raceday of the season when a feast of top class action coupled with a bumper crowd of racegoers will ensure the atmosphere is buzzing. The Haldon Gold Cup is one of the early highlights of the jump racing season and usually attracts a plethora of chasing stars that use the race as a stepping-stone to bigger and better prizes.
Racing stars
A day not to be missed
Its roll of honour is impressive. In the 1990’s Travado became synonymous with the race, and after winning it three times, a hospitality suite was named after him.
Don’t miss out on Devon’s premier raceday when the superstars of the sport will be in action.
Viking Flagship had already won two Queen Mother Champion Chases before he won the race as a 10-year-old in 1997. The 1999 winner Flagship Uberalles tasted more chasing glory following his Haldon Gold Cup success including three Tingle Creek victories and the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Edredon Bleu and Azertyuiop also both won the race before Queen Mother Champion Chase glory. However, Best Mate is the name everyone will remember for his association with the race. One of the greatest steeple chasers of all time, he won the race in 2001, before winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2002, 2003 and 2004. While the Haldon Gold Cup is the highlight, two novice hurdle races are also renowned for providing scintillating action with top prospects likely to line up.

A Racecourse Steeped in History Exeter Racecourse is proud of its racing history which began during the reign of Charles II when races were first staged on Haldon Hill. Since then, the racecourse has evolved into becoming one of the best conference and events venues the south-west has to offer and its reputation as one of the finest racecourses in the Westcountry is widely acknowledged.
It wasn’t until 1769 that races were ruled and regulated under the Jockey Club. In the 1800’s, prize money for the owner of the first-placed horse was £50 and races were run on the flat in four mile heats for four-year-olds.
At 850ft above sea level it is the highest racecourse in the land, the second longest at two miles, and has been described as not only one of the loveliest courses, but also one of the fairest.
Hurdles were introduced in 1846, and the races, for gentlemen, were run in one-mile heats over four hurdles. In 1866 the National Hunt committee was formed and a code of the rules for racing was laid down and enforced. A separate committee established steeplechasing at Devon and Exeter, a title which remained until 1992 when the older name of Exeter was resumed. A grandstand was erected in 1911, which was replaced in 1992, and racing continued throughout the South African & First World Wars. During World War II, racing was curtailed until 1946.

Exeter was a summer racing track, but in the mid 1960’s the Horserace Betting Levy Board encouraged courses to stage races during the winter months so that meetings were held year round. Stables were built at Exeter in 1960 when twenty wooden boxes were erected. Today, there are eighty nine brick-built stables well as a stable lads’ canteen. Exeter holds 15 meetings from October until May and most important race is the Haldon Gold Cup, a Grade Two limited handicap steeplechase run over two miles, one furlong run in early November, it became a listed race in 1985. In April 2007, Exeter became the latest course to join Jockey Club Racecourses and two years later, its £2.2million Denman building was completed to accommodate the increasing demand for conferences and events and the growing number of racegoers. Exeter continues to evolve today and few would dispute that its reputation together with its position high on Haldon Hill, make it one of the Westcountry’s most iconic and well-known venues. Contract hire company helps drive expanding business forward. Thriving electrical contractor, ‘Shout for an Electrician’ with offices across Devon continues to buck the trend since opening the ‘Newton Abbot Appliance Repair Centre’ and Showroom 12 months ago by taking on more staff and a fleet of five new vehicles. ‘Shout for an Electrician’ made-up of three divisions; Contracting, Electrical and Retail shop & Repairs, services both the domestic and commercial market. Corporate clients include blue-chip companies such as Burger King, Boots, Day Lewis Pharmacy, William Hill and the Co-operative covering a geographic reach from Plymouth to Bristol. Andy Shout of ‘Shout for an Electrician’ has taken delivery of the vans from Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing. The fleet includes a larger van which can carry more stock following the launch of the company’s new 24/7 emergency service as a result of customer demand. Vehicle Save has supplied each vehicle sign-written, fully fitted out and the installation of trackers.
Andy Shout says: “We have an established long-term relationship with Vehicle Save and I trust them; it’s not all about cost but the ongoing advice and after-sales service they provide. The vehicles are very economical and the fuel savings we’ve made has already paid for one of the vans. The trackers are proving invaluable and I can accurately measure an increase in performance by 20%. We always know where workers are and can divert them to emergency jobs if required offering an efficient and prompt service to our customers. In addition by having contract hire I have a fixed budget with no hidden costs such as punctures or new tyres and I know exactly how much each van costs me by the hour! The other benefit is that I replace the vehicles after
a three year period so the vans are always in good condition which reflects the quality of our brand, image and the service we provide – an important factor.” Vehicle Save Contract Hire & Leasing Limited is part of The Vehicle Save Group operated by local businessman Jim Howard. It comprises two independent businesses providing complementing services of contract hire & leasing and daily rentals with its head office based on Marsh Barton, Exeter. Vehicle Save (UK) Limited commenced trading in 1994 and now has a turnover of £4.5m and c.100 employees. Jim is the official franchisee of UK’s leading car and van rental company, Europcar in the South West peninsula operating three branches in Exeter, Taunton and Plymouth. Jim Howard says: “We’ve been working with Andy Shout for a number of years. As a truly independent and local business delivering a tailored service to SMEs in the South West we are well placed to offer our customers totally unbiased guidance on the selection of the right vehicles for their business and within their budget. The vehicles provided to ‘Shout for an Electrician’ are economical and improve efficiency of the business by reducing downtime and fuel consumption. By having trackers installed, Andy can offer great benefits to his customers.” Photograph courtesy of Glen King

A first class service for Milk Link Milk Link is a dairy co-operative and is the UK’s largest producer of cheese, supplying all major food retailers, food processors and food service organisations. It also manufactures a wide range of dairy products including long life milk and cream, extended shelf life products, flavoured milks and milk powders. The company has 11 sites across the UK, including four centres in Devon and Cornwall and its head office is based in Bristol. Formed in the year 2000, it employs around 1,200 people at eight processing facilities and in 2011/12 generated a turnover of £628 million. The profits generated by the business are returned to its farmer members to help provide a sustainable future for their dairy enterprises. In doing so, at a wider level, it also supports the economic, social and environmental well being of many hundreds of rural communities across the UK. Since November 2011, Exeter Racecourse has hosted Milk Link’s advance management development programme covering a total of 70 managers. This has led to some 76 separate events being staged at the racecourse in less than a year. Steve Dent, Learning and Development Officer at Milk Link, is therefore well qualified to comment on the unique conference and events facilities at Exeter racecourse.

“We get a first class service, everything about Exeter is positive and I’d recommend the venue to anyone,”
Positive learning environment Steve further explained: “We needed somewhere with good access to the M5 and first class facilities, and Exeter has surpassed our expectations. Our delegates have consistently confirmed that the racecourse has been a very suitable venue for the advance programme and the facilities are conducive to a positive learning environment. We have received an excellent service from the staff at the venue and this has made running our programme an easy and enjoyable experience.”
Future recommendation Milk Link will soon merge with Scandinavian food producer Arla and it will then be responsible for 23% of UK milk production.
Steve said: “If we continue with management development, I will definitely recommend that it is carried out at Exeter Racecourse.” If you would like to make use of the excellent conference and events facilities available at Exeter Racecourse, then please contact Michelle Thomas on 01392 832599 or email michelle.thomas@ thejockeyclub.co.uk
Attentive staff Steve went on to say that the signage meant delegates arrived at the right rooms and at the right time and attentive staff meant every need was catered for.
“It was a painless experience, even down to the training material we left at the course always being ready in the rooms we were using prior to our arrival.”

Horses to follow Lucy Johnson, Western Morning News racing correspondent, selects some West Countrytrained horses to follow for the season ahead The 2012-2013 season could prove a vintage one for the south-west’s leading trainers with a wealth of young talent being readied at their respective yards. The novice chase division looking particularly strong and two exceptional hurdlers set to be tried over fences are the David Pipe-trained Dynaste and Victor Dartnall’s Ambion Wood.
Jeremy Scott has a lot to look forward to with Melodic Rendezvous who followed up his easy bumper win at Chepstow with a length second in the champion bumper at Punchestown in April.
The Pipes never ran scared of taking on the sensational Big Bucks with Dynsaste and although he never saw more than a distant rear view, the six year-old is likely to shake up the novice chase division this season.
Both Kilmurvy and Master Benjamin are expected to progress over hurdles, while Sir Kezbah is another to note in staying novice chases. Josh’s Dreamway is likely to make her mark in mares’ novice chases as will Swincombe Flame, from Nick William’s South Molton yard.
Ambion Wood is another incredibly exciting prospect in three-mile novice chases. He concluded last season by winning the EBF Future Champions Novices’ Hurdle at Perth and is a horse with such raw talent, his chasing debut at Exeter on November 14 is eagerly awaited. Others from Dartnall’s yard expected to make their mark are Ace High. Out of Peter and Jill Emery’s wonder mare Celtic Native who scored three wins at Exeter, after a year on the sidelines, he’ll be aimed at staying chases. Giles Cross, is sure to make his presence felt in the top long distance chases, and Great Gusto and Seebright are two to look out for over fences and hurdles respectively.

This mare ran a superb race in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle Race at the Cheltenham Festival where just six and half lengths split the first nine home. Philip Hobbs is sure to have a plethora of talent to count on this season, with Fingal Bay looking an exciting prospect in novice chases. Bold Henry and Princely Player also look to have exciting careers over fences. David Pipe has plenty of strength in depth for the season ahead and two contenders for top honours in novice chases including Balgarry, who finished seventh in the Coral Cup at the Festival having won a hot handicap hurdle at Newbury in March, and Close House, fourth in the Neptune Investments Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival.

Based in North Devon, the 40-yearold company is family owned and employs 45 staff supplying all manner of businesses, from schools, care homes, large attractions to national contracts such as the National Trust with all their catering requirements. Between 70 and 80 guests are invited to the raceday, for an afternoon of networking and entertaining with both suppliers and the company’s own sales team and directors. Adam Fitzgerald, the company’s buying controller, believes it is the single most
successful event that the company is involved with, in terms of generating new business, and having tested the water five years ago, on October 11th they will be enjoying their sixth consecutive year of raceday hospitality.
He commented: “It is a very beneficial day to everyone and our customers thoroughly enjoy it. Despite tough economic times, it is an event that really works for us and for our suppliers. For quite a few of our customers, we make a real day of it as we take them to the race course by coach from North Devon which all adds to the experience.”
Mr Fitzgerald believes the success of the day is in part due to the professionalism of Exeter Racecourse’s staff and the location of the hospitality suites not least the River Rooms which were built in 2009 to cater for the increased demand for raceday hospitality.
Mr Fitzgerald said: “The River Rooms are superb with wonderful views across the racecourse. All the staff are fantastic and so helpful and the food and service is first class. Nothing is ever too much trouble which certainly is a major factor in us returning year after year.”

Meet the Manager A head for marketing and a passion for racing Tim Darby has a passion for horse racing and a head for marketing which looks set to stand him in good stead as Exeter Racecourse’s new general manager. The former chief executive of the Professional Darts Corporation has a background ensconced in racing and has held some prestigious roles including marketing manager for United Racecourse and at Epsom where he helped deliver the 2012 Investec Derby. But after ten years commuting from his Ashburton home he decided to hang up his proverbial boots to spend more time with his family and concentrate on consultancy.
“The appeal of spending hours behind the wheel of a car was beginning to wear thin and everything that I love about living in Devon was winning the subconscious battle. The vacancy at Exeter came at an opportune moment and I’m delighted to be working here. Behind Exeter Chiefs, Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle, we are the biggest sporting venue in Devon. There is so much potential,” he said.
While Tim says it’s inevitable that change will occur under his management, he is also keen to continue to grow the team’s steadfast work in widening the sport’s appeal.
He said: “Racing needs to get more people coming and encourage those who’ve been once to come back again. To do that, we need to further increase awareness. Once we get people through the gate, they really enjoy their day out, so to encourage them to come back, we’ll use ticket offers so that it becomes more financially attractive. We will also be working towards improving the overall raceday experience and introducing more user friendly fixtures for the 2013-2014 season.” Tim also has plans to make the oncourse betting ring less intimidating and to continue with the course’s behind the scenes raceday tours, tipsters talks and introduce techniques to de-mystify the sport.
He said: “Racing is such a simple sport. The horses start, they finish, and the first past the post wins.”
Exeter’s conference and events business will also come under Tim’s scrutiny in terms of potential growth. “Exeter has one of the best facilities in the Westcountry for holding conference and events, and this is reflected in how busy the venue is. We’ll continue to work very closely with businesses at a local and regional level, encouraging event bookers to come and see us, and see for themselves how much we have to offer.” Local is very much a watch word of Tim’s and an improvement of the food offering at Exeter is on the agenda with local food and beverage set to be on the menu.
“I love food and there are so many wonderful local producers in the area that it would be great to see them at Exeter,” he said. While Exeter, looks set to benefit from Tim’s role as general manager, as he weaves his marketing magic, Ashburton Dad’s Football Club is also likely gain.
“It’s great to be based in Devon on a full time basis. I love my weekly kick abouts with all the dads and playing golf in the region too,” he laughs. Ticket Hotline 08445 793005 Restaurant & Corporate Events 01392 832599 Book Online www.exeter-racecourse.co.uk

Our Weekly Columnist Tom Scudamore After a long summer break, I’m itching for autumn racing to commence and am already looking forward to the return of racing at Exeter on October 11th. It’s a course I love as it’s so fair to novice horses, both over hurdles and fences and it teaches them to jump with confidence.
The best view in the country The fences are very well made, but fair, and they are well positioned. It’s by far one of the best tracks in the country. Some of the battles up the run-in are tremendous and its also one of the very few courses in the country where you can stand by the final fence and watch the horses jump. I’d recommend everyone to do this. You get as close as is possible to the action and its fantastic for a racecourse to be able to offer this experience.
Quality and quantity Last season, was own of my best to date, in terms of the quality of winners, and regular readers of my column, which goes live on Exeter Racecourse’s website every Friday morning during its season, will have shared all the ups and downs of my season.

I’m stable jockey to David Pipe, one of the country’s leading trainers, and he has a lot of strength in depth for the season ahead. The horse I’m most looking forward to riding is Grands Crus who will be aimed at the big chases this season. His half brother Gervey Chambertin is very promising too. Of the others, Dynaste, who ran some incredible races against Big Bucks last season, goes novice chasing. He has to have a bright future. Then there’s the likes of Balgarry, Close House, Problematic, Battle Group, Broadway Buffalo and Buddy Bolero to come out. David has a lot of nice young horses for the season ahead, mixed with the older horses. I’m also really excited about The Giant Bolster who will be aimed again at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Exciting times September will be an intense month as there is a lot of schooling to be done, and then the season really gets going in October. All jockeys take their jobs very seriously these days and the atmosphere remains quite level in the changing room, whether it’s the summer or the winter, although as the big Saturday meetings approach, I have to say it does get a little bit more tense.
The big 30 I recently turned 30, and while I’m not one of the old boys quite yet, I’ve been around a very long time which means I can take the big meetings in my stride. That said, whether its a novice hurdle at Exeter, or the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival, each race means as much to me and if I’m able to give each horse the best possible ride I can, I’m happy.
