Home From Home Welcome to Miller & Son’s Autumn/Winter 2012/13 property magazine showing a selection of the wide range of property we are marketing for sale and to let across Cornwall and West Devon from our wide network of property sales and letting offices. Miller & Son’s successful track record of selling properties in the region has been recently acknowledged by a survey by the primelocation, zoopla and findaproperty websites recording that we had more properties sold or under offer than any other agent in the region in the first eight months of 2012. This is despite the current difficult economic climate. We, as a company, have been delighted to share this success with our many clients whose properties we have sold and let. We have embraced the challenging market with continued investment on training and focusing on raising the standard of services delivered to our clients and our increased sales and success is a direct reflection of this commitment. Lettings is exceptionally busy with five letting offices finding more tenants than ever for their ever growing portfolio. Property still remains a safe haven with sensible returns. Whether you are looking to purchase or rent your new home or to sell or let your current property we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact your nearest office as detailed on this page to discuss your requirements.

Exeter Racecourse Trainer Profile: Philip Hobbs 28
Autumn 2012 • Home From Home
Stable stars unveiled at Exeter Racecourse Philip Hobbs is widely regarded as one of the finest trainers in the country, his gift for readying horses, coupled with his mild, self-effacing manner, marking him out as a true ambassador for the sport. Based on the foothills of Exmoor, he has trained since 1985 and bagged all but a handful of the country’s biggest National Hunt races including the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Tingle Creek with Flagship Uberalles, the Champion Hurdle with Rooster Booster and the Hennessey with What’s Up Boys. At Exeter Racecourse, winners are a regular occurrence, and right through the season, from October until May, the chances are he’ll unleash a future star which will start off quietly in a novice race before going on to much greater things. Philip explained: “It’s a really good galloping track and is definitely one of my favourites for both novice hurdlers and chasers. The ground is really well looked after and there’s a great team there. If it’s the right race, and the right ground, then I’ll always run my horses at Exeter.” Fingal Bay, one of the highest rated novice hurdlers last season, is a prime example having won on his racecourse debut at Exeter on February 13, 2011. He started at the inauspicious odds of 9-2, and went on to annihilate the field by 22 lengths. Ticket Hotline 08445 793005 Restaurant & Corporate Events 01392 832599 Book Online www.exeter-racecourse.co.uk
He won his next four outings, and while he missed the Cheltenham Festival, his season concluded with second to Lovcen, another former Exeter runner, in the Grand Sefton at Aintree. “He’s very exciting and he’ll now go novice chasing. If there is a race over two and a half miles at the right time, then he’ll go to Exeter,” said Philip. On May 8, Princely Player won a novice hurdle at the course, and Hobbs is hopeful he has a decent future over fences. Bold Henry was another very impressive course winner in May and before he begins his chasing career, a novice hurdle at Exeter is on the agenda. “They are both nice horses and we are hopeful they will progress to become very decent. If we can find the right races, they may run at Exeter in the autumn,” he said. Philip has saddled two winners of the Haldon Gold Cup – Monkerhostin and Planet of Sound – and this year Menorah, will be aimed at the racecourse’s richest race. “It’s a nice race to win and a very good starting point for him. If he wins, and he would have to win, we will then perhaps consider the Tingle Creek,” he said. With Exeter clearly playing an important part in the education of Philip’s horses, more future stars are sure to be unveiled this season.
The new season of racing starts at Exeter Racecourse on Thursday, October 11th. Exeter Racecourse, Kennford, Exeter, Devon, EX6 7XS Autumn 2012 • Home From Home

L ANHYDR OCK HOTEL and golf club
Lanhydrock Hotel and Golf Club can be found just outside the old county town of Bodmin. Originally designed just as a golf club, Lanhydrock was purchased in 1993 by the Bond Family and has since then been managed and further developed by Directors Graham & Clare Bond. At that time the family operated both St Mellion Golf & Country Club, built by Martin and Hermon Bond, and Looe Golf Club. After much success including bringing International Golf to Cornwall by holding thirteen major events including The Benson & Hedges on several occasions and the Ladies British Open, St Mellion and Looe were both sold at the end of the nineties with the family deciding to keep its link with golf at Lanhydrock. Those were fantastic times with superstars such as Nicklaus, Watson, Els, Faldo and Ballesteros to name but a few gracing the fairways at St Mellion.
The club and course at Lanhydrock has been quietly developed over the years. The forty six bedroom hotel was added in 2006 due to a demand for an affordable but quality hotel in the centre of the County. Building this facility has enabled the venue to offer a wide range of services from golf to conferences, general dining, weddings and functions with the accommodation to support these activities. Naturally golfing groups large and small enjoy the onsite hotel and charming course but they make
up a relatively small percentage of the client base that frequents the Hotel and Club. Corporate guests enjoy the benefits of our central location, visitors again find the Lanhydrock beneficial for exploring all corners of Cornwall. With the added accommodation, parties and celebrations have become even more popular, especially for wedding functions including licensed civil ceremonies. With this being the most special day for a couple, it necessitates their own ideas and wishes.

Lanhydrock’s dedicated and experienced team go the ‘extra mile’ to ensure the day is one that they will always remember, individually creating their perfect wedding breakfast and evening party with them. Lanhydrock caters for only one Wedding Reception a day ensuring that they have our complete focus. The Hotel provides catering throughout the day from 7.00AM. Head Chef Paul Evan’s renowned Quality Cornish Sunday Carvery has proven to be another great success with the emphasis on local quality meats, homemade Yorkshire puddings, traditionally roasted potatoes and generous variety of vegetables. With ample free parking, beautiful views across the parkland course, there are not many better places for a spot of Lunch either! 46
Autumn 2012 • Home From Home
This can also be said for a conference destination. With two air-conditioned meeting rooms, Lanhydrock provides just the right atmosphere to conduct business. Lanhydrock was originally known for its golf course. Opened in 1993 the course maturity belies its age with tree lined fairways, brooks and streams throughout the course. The greens staff have also planted many trees and shrubs, careful to keep the natural look to the land. Whilst not a long course by modern standards, Par 70, the course is an enjoyable challenge to players of all abilities. The course record of 64 is held by local player and member Ian Jolliff. With only ten bunkers on the course, its main defence is its trees. Hit the fairway and you will score!
Though not difficult to walk, the club has eighteen Electric Golf Buggies which subject to conditions can be used on the fairways. It also provides your customary golf shop and large Driving Range with covered bays and grass tees. Lanhydrock has recently welcomed Cornish PGA Professional Jamie O’Hara as its resident professional. Jamie, whose speciality is tuition, teaches players of all abilities and ages, whether new to the game and wanting a ‘taster session’ or experienced players. All are welcomed to the Club for private or group coaching with conventional lessons and the option of video analysis. The feedback we receive from our customers is extremely important. New developments under consideration including bedroom suites to the
hotel, creating a facility incorporating fitness and treatment rooms and extending our kitchen. Resident black Labrador Seve Bond often greets guests at the front door and even writes his own “tongue in cheek” blog on the website. Brothers Oliver and Christian Bond have both contributed to the green-keeping side of the company from time to time. A true Cornish family business.
Visit Lanhydrock and you will be assured a genuine warm welcome and open hospitality www.lanhydrockhotel.com Autumn 2012 • Home From Home
