A Lion Fund brochure endorsed by KGV alumnus, film and TV actor Mr. Aarif Rahman
Foreword by Aarif Rahman The Lion Fund is an opportunity to support the school. It provides a means of making a financial contribution at any time and having rapid impact for the good of KGV students. At KGV we believe in the powerful impact of collective unrestricted gifts: every donation counts no matter the amount. Your contributions have an invaluable role in increasing the resources available to the students. The financial support of the KGV community enables the school to look beyond the school fees and the ESF contribution devoted to teaching, administrative costs and school maintenance. The Lion Fund can be called upon at a moment’s notice to purchase equipment which will have an immediate impact on the current students’ experience. Your ongoing support provides flexibility for the school in identifying projects that will ensure an unmatched student experience. Your gift will make a difference!

Message from the Executive Principal When we launched the first KGV Lion Fund appeal last year we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Looking back, we were able to make a significant contribution to the hugely successful Year 11 Language Immersion courses; purchases of trees, benches, books and an outdoor chess set; and we were able to build our network of contacts and benefactors. It was a great progress and my thanks to everyone who made a contribution. So the Lion Fund is here to stay and we want to build on our success and aim even higher. I very much hope you will make a contribution, no matter how small, towards our new set of priorities. You will know that budgets in ESF schools are under particular pressure at the moment with the loss of the subvention next year and a successful Lion Fund makes it possible for us to provide important additional facilities for KGV students. These are not long term aims, your money will be used this year to benefit your child. I know you value what we do at KGV and here is your chance to help us to do more. Please make a contribution today !
Best wishes,
Ed Wickins Executive Principal of ESF Kowloon Learning Campus

Ni Hao Bonjour Students posing in front of the remains of Berlin Wall in Strasbourg The Lion Fund | 1
The fact that the same group of students that went together to Strasbourg still reminisce about the trip and even attempt to recreate our experiences there a full year later really tells you something: no, not that we’re hopelessly nostalgic, but that the trip was a truly unique and enjoyable experience. Every day we combined appreciation of the French language, culture and history with amusement and new experiences. We benefitted from engaging, small-group language lessons in the morning, and embarked on a different adventure every afternoon. Siri Livingston (12U6S) on Strasbourg Trip The trip to Strasbourg was an invaluable experience for me as I was able to develop a wider range of vocabulary and understanding of the German language whilst surrounded by German-speakers and my classmates. Throughout the day and including mealtimes we were constantly encouraged to speak in German or to use vocabulary we had learnt in the lessons. Ally Lim (12U2S) on Strasbourg Trip The real benefit of these immersion courses for language learners is that a visit to a target language country represents putting theory into practice. There is nothing better than being literally immersed in the language, when every word you see and every word you hear is in the language you are learning. The impact for students in terms of both motivation and language acquisition is huge. Simon Sheridan Learning Director: Languages & Culture The Lion Fund | 2
Students visiting the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum in Xi’an
Participating in the Xi’an trip meant that I had the chance to experience a completely different culture, including food and traditions, and the diversity was extremely eye opening and allowed me to further appreciate the country. One of the highlights of going to Xi’an was being able to see the Terracotta Warriors. Being able to discern rows after rows of hand-crafted warriors was fascinating and overwhelming. Michelle Wong (12C09) on Xi’an Trip One of the highlights of the trip was the terracotta army - a huge array of a clay soldiers built to be buried with the emperor of that dynasty. During the trip, We went to a tourism school where their students were preparing to enter the hospitality industry in Dubai. The food in Xi’an was different from what we expected. Sauce is an important factor in northern Chinese food as most of the food’s taste comes from it. This trip to Xi’an has improved our understanding of Chinese culture which will allow us to interpret Chinese literature in a different perspective. Esmond Tam (12N08) on Xi’an Trip Our students did extremely well in the school exchange, where we talked and taught each other in Chinese and English, and a local village school visit, where students were challenged with teaching students English in Chinese! Our students tried their very best to use their rich or limited linguist Chinese language in the exchanges and they made us proud. The instructions by trip leaders were mainly in Chinese language, which was very different from classrooms. I was extremely impressed with and often moved by the scene by students helped each other and cheered when they were able to complete a page on the trip work book. I sincerely hope all those wonderful things continue in the classrooms and benefit our students’ life learning journey. Jean Zhai, Head of Chinese, Chinese language Immersion program 2014 - Xi’an trip organizer The Lion Fund | 4

Shelters
Broadcasting system The broadcast system at KGV enables students to experience events taking place the hall in various venues around the school, as our hall is not large enough to accommodate the entire student body. We set up a system that could be operated by our technicians and students, where they could learn and extend their media experience through active live broadcast situations. To date the KGV TV student media team has broadcast multiple live music, dance and school ceremonial events to different venues around the school and across the world via the internet. Story of Generosity KGV has a history of philanthropy
One Million Dollar Donation by a Generous Donor for LSC refurbishments KGV prides itself on being an inclusive school and the Learning Support Centre provides a world class educational experience for students with moderate learning difficulties. By donating to this project you will be ensuring that all young people at KGV can study and work in facilities that meet their needs. From specialist equipment to rooms specifically designed to meet students sensory needs we aim to The Lion Fund | 7
continually provide the very best. For students with SpLD this could mean a multi-sensory approach to their learning; for those with sensory integration needs it may be specialist seats, chair wedges and weighted blankets; for students on the Autism spectrum a separate sensory room will provide a space for the therapy they need to be successful. The LSC also ensures that students from across KGV are aware of and sensitive to the needs of people with additional and special needs. Each year over 100 KGV students volunteer work in the LSC – they know their input is valuable and contribute the best way they can. From lunch clubs, social communication groups, reading circles and party planning students dedicate hours to enriching the KGV learning experience for LSC students. Each year the students who graduate from Year 13 of the LSC go on to continue their education at colleges and universities around the globe.
Our students have a wide range of physical, emotional and academic needs, your donation will support all aspects of their development and ensure a wonderful future where they can fulfil their potential.
