Ski Trip 2015: Courmayeur, Italy During half term 39 Year 8, 9 and 10 students and 6 staff travelled to Courmayeur Ski resort in The Aosta Valley in Italy. As they drove through the Mont Blanc tunnel they were greeted by snow storms that made for excellent skiing for the whole week. They stayed in the Hotel Telecabine, which was just a short walk from the lifts. There were 22 beginners that all progressed very well throughout the week and went from the nursery slopes to red runs in no time at all. The instructors were all fantastic and the apres activities excellent. Students were able to enjoy Courmayeur Village in the evenings, visit the local disco, take part in “Bum Boarding”, eat crepes and take part in numerous fun activities in and around the hotel. At the end of the week the students were given certificates and badges by their instructors and Mason Wood (Year 8) was named as the best beginner of the week with Sam Hardy (Year 9) named as the best overall skier by their instructors. A fantastic time was had by all on the trip. If anyone is interested in further ski trips, they should speak to Mr Webb. Next year the school will be travelling to Jay Peak Resort in Vermont, USA. It is the school’s intention to return to Courmayeur in 2017.

Work is now progressing on the new Assembly Hall and the school has taken steps to safeguard students and to reduce disruption to learning as far as it possibly can. We are really looking forward to using such an amazing facility when it opens in September. As a result of this work there has been some internal remodelling within the school. We are now putting the finishing touches to our new Student Service area which will open after Easter. I would like to thank parents and students for bearing with us over the past few weeks. This half term the school successfully achieved the matrix standard. This is a unique quality framework for organisations to assess and measure their information, advice and/or guidance (IAG) services, which ultimately supports individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals. The assessment process was very rigorous and included interviews with students and staff. We received outstanding feedback and were delighted to achieve this prestigious standard. Competitive sport in the school continues to be an area of excellence with the school having won several district titles in a variety of sports. This half term we have added to our success with the Year 9 boys’ basketball team winning a very hard fought county championship for the first time in the history of the school. We are very proud of our students and their successes at local, county and national level. Well done! The next parents’ forum on Thursday, 4th June 2015 from 3.45pm – 5.45pm gives you the opportunity to meet with our Governors and the senior leadership team and share with us your ideas on how the school can further improve. I hope to see you there. Next term will be very busy. Many of our students will be taking exams and I wish them every success. I am sure that I don’t need to tell them that the Easter holidays would be an opportune time to start their revision! I wish you all a relaxing Easter break.

YEAR 7

SCHOOL NEWS WORLD BOOK DAY

As part of World Book Day on Thursday 5th March, The King John School teachers brought awareness to the literary celebration by dressing up as well-known characters from some of the world’s favourite books. The students spent the day being taught by the likes of Dumbledore, Peter Pan, Sherlock, Willy Wonka and many more. Students were given the opportunity to take part in a competition where they were asked to find the hidden characters around the school along with a word scramble code. Winners were given a voucher to spend on Amazon. To get the students even more involved, the English department have created a ‘shelfies’ board where they can take a ‘shelfie’ of themselves with all of their books at home. There have been some fantastically creative entries for the board including someone in a bath tub of books, handstands with books, one student even laid down next to a floor of books – which was nearly twice as tall as him! The English teachers will be deciding on their favourites to award with some exciting prizes.

rollacity delights

On the 10th March, over 150 students from Year 7 enjoyed the thrills and spills of RollaCity. We had a great time sharing social time together and the staff from RollaCity commented on how enthusiastic and well- mannered the students were. Staff from the King John School also impressed the students with their balance and skating skills! We left school at 4pm on 4 coaches and then had a couple of hours at the centre enjoying the skating, games, music and refreshments. It was lovely to see so many people having so much fun. Thank you very much to Mrs Copeland for organising the whole trip for us and thank you to all staff who supported the trip in any way. Here’s to next year’s skating extravaganza!!

Student voice news This year has been a productive one for Student Voice. We have recently organised the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Furthermore the Executive Committee and the Tutor representatives have supported the voting for Jack Petchey nominations and winners of outstanding contributions that students have made in and out of school. The Executive Committee has coordinated and planned topics for discussion and supported Mrs Jones with great ideas for our school. Meetings take place every four weeks and our meeting on the 20th of March 2015 was a discussion about facilities at the school and how they can be enhanced. Doctor Wilson joined us at this meeting. So far this year Student Voice has elected the Executive Committee; voted for Jack Petchey winners; elected Tutor representatives; organised voting and suggestions; raised the profile of Student Voice; discussed Young Essex assembly; deliberated suggestions for next year’s shoebox appeal; decided and coordinated decisions about the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge and given the students of King John a say in the running of their school. Very soon, the suggestion boxes will be displayed in areas for students to contribute to ideas about their school. In addition to this the creation of a Sixth Form Committee has enabled the sixth formers to discuss issues important to them and separate from the main school. Staff and students have been proactive in providing all the students at The King John School a voice.

news from the past

FROM BRAZIL TO BENFLEET As part of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms scheme King John was able to play host to Roseangela Ramos for the first week of March. Roseangela teaches English at a school in Sao Paolo, Brazil. King John and Roseangela have been working closely since 2012 swapping pieces of work backwards and forwards. Whilst she was here Roseangela was able to work with some of our students on a waste project. She showed work that her classes had produced about ways to save water and in return she took home posters produced by 7-08 and 8-03 on how we deal with our waste by recycling. Roseangela also spent time in a local primary school and within the languages department at King John which she found incredibly eye opening. She left with lots of great ways to teach English to her students and lots of really positive experiences. Roseanglea said she thinks she will be annoying her head teacher a lot with all the ideas she wants to implement! She was incredibly touched by all the support that our staff offered her and how enthusiastic the students she worked with were.

The school was recently delighted to receive a book on Warsaw street art photographed by a former student Gilly Burrow who now lives in Warsaw. The book is titled Wa Wa Bla Bla and received favourable reviews in Poland where it is currently on sale. wicked!

duke of edinburgh bronze: camping skills

On Wednesday 25th February, Year 8 students visited the Apollo Theatre in Victoria to see the fabulous musical, Wicked. The production tells the incredible story of an unlikely friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda, The Good and The Wicked Witch of the West.

On Saturday 7th March the new Bronze group of 24 Year 9 students, spent the morning developing their knowledge and skills ready for expedition. This included how to use a trangia (camping stove), map skills and setting up tents! All of the groups did really well and are now getting ready for their practice expedition in April.

The set, music, costumes and props made the production outstanding and all students thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget the experience. “My favourite scene was The Emerald City’; the costumes were amazing!” ALICE CLARK, 8-10

billy elliot the musical

“The story was fabulous and the acting was even better.”

On Thursday 12th March, Year 9 students visited The Victoria Palace Theatre, London to see the award winning production of Billy Elliot. Set in a northern mining town, against the background of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Follow Billy’s journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever.

BECCA MAIR, 8-09

King John students were led on a dramatic journey where they empathised with Billy; laughing and crying at different moments in his story. This was a fantastic experience for all students and they now need to write a theatre review about the production analysing the acting, set, costume, make-up and all other production elements.

catering

doctor who Guest Contributer

Year 10 catering students have been very busy over the last term with their GCSE practical exams. The students have been using all their knowledge of ingredients, food preparation, and presentation skills to cook a range of highly skilled dishes from éclairs, custard fruit tarts to soups, breads, main course and decorated cakes. As you can see they should be very proud of all their hard work.

Year 11 student Bailey Aston has had a piece of his writing published on the Doctor Who website! ‘Five Characters From Series 8 That Should Be In Series 9’ tells of Bailey’s ultimate wish list for the next series of Doctor Who. His way with words makes for a very compelling and interesting read. Check it out on www.doctorwhotv.co.uk

rugby star Henry Kiely, 11-07 has been successfully chosen to train with the East of England Squad for Rugby. This is an honour and we are all really proud of him. He will train with them twice in March and will play the divisional Welsh squads. Following this he will progress into a weeklong camp which will determine the England U16 squad. We wish him all the best of luck.

dancing queen

jack petchey: speak out challenge 18TH – 20TH FEBRUARY 2015

Sophie Rajah has recently attended the International IDTA Theatre awards in Manchester. Out of the 100 dancers that took part only 28 made it through to the final, Sophie being one of them. Sophie was also 1 of only 10 dancers awarded a ‘Special Commendation’. Huge congratulations Sophie!

Before we went to the Jack Petchey Speak out Challenge, we expected it to be a lecture-style day where we sat and listened to the guest speaker but we were totally wrong. There were lots of activities involving improvisation in front of the other pupils, group assessments to help confidence and many other fun activities.

Year 10 mock interviews On Tuesday 10th March, 32 volunteers from various businesses including 10 from Ford, gave up a morning’s work to give all year 10 students the experience of a formal mock interview. Students had to prepare necessary paperwork - application form, CV and application letter, for a job of their choice.

The speakers who taught us the different skills of public speaking were both very confident. The lady who led the challenge on Wednesday and Thursday was a lady who took pride in her ability to be a little crazy at times, making it much easier for us to be confident in speaking to a group. The gentleman who led the challenge on Friday spoke of how just five years ago he had been afraid to speak in front of a group but had made it his goal to overcome his fear. His words were inspiring.

On the day, the Year 10 students looked extremely smart dressed in appropriate attire. They arrived at their interviews nervous, which is always a good sign! Most left having had a very positive experience and happy with the verbal feedback provided. The volunteers were very impressed with our students. Here are some of their comments:

When we first entered, we had to introduce ourselves in an original and creative way – even our teachers had to take part! By forcing people to deal with their inhibitions immediately, we quickly became more comfortable and we learned things about our fellow Year 10s that we had not previously known.

“Confident, positive and well turned out students. They are a credit to the school.” “They were all smartly dressed, enthusiastic and did their best. I met some interesting students and had some interesting conversations.”

We learned the secrets to structuring an effective speech and developed skills for a strong presentation. We played some games to help us to remember these skills and then some students were chosen at random to present a topic on the spot. This was very challenging but enjoyable to watch! Following this, we presented individual speeches on a range of topics in small groups and then in pairs. This allowed us to build our confidence and get some personal feedback from our peers. This was much easier!

Well done Year 10!

When we began, many of the students weren’t comfortable speaking in front of class but by the end of the day everyone was able to deliver their final speech confidently and without any help whatsoever. The experience was fantastic and, even though I didn’t get through, it taught me a lot about public speaking: how to plan it, how to structure it and how to deliver it. A big thank you to Mrs Jones for organising the event and giving us this chance; I would highly recommend younger years to take part in this when the opportunity arises! SIXTH FORM A STUDENT’S VIEW OF SIXTH FORM LIFE

the country, this was something I would have never considered prior to attending the King John sixth form. Once I had sent the application off, it was not long before I started receiving offers to study at these institutions. I was overwhelmed. My hard work finally began to pay off and I felt successful in what I had done. This was something I aspired to be, and eventually feel I have become.

Hello, my name is Callum Brown. I am currently a Year 13 student attending the King John Sixth Form. On Wednesday 4th February 2015, I was informed that I had been offered an unconditional placement at the prestigious institution, Norwich University of the Arts. This is my story. Throughout my GCSE studies I never truly grasped a distinct understanding as to why education is so important to us. This resulted in me becoming extremely unmotivated and careless towards my studies and what grades I would eventually achieve. After the many years of this mentality and lack of progression, I undertook my GCSE exams, and to not only myself but also other’s surprise, I achieved grades that would allow me to further pursue an educational path in life. Raised by parents who value the success and happiness of their children, I was encouraged to stay in education and attend various college and sixth form open days. Through the many we visited, none instinctively appealed to me, in fact they simply reminded me of my GCSE studies, just with more pressure and stress involved. Quickly I began to repel the idea of higher education however this suddenly changed after I visited the King John Sixth Form.

Throughout this year I believe I have achieved many other goals, some great, some minor, nevertheless all respected equally with pride. But by far, my greatest undoubtedly is receiving an unconditional placement at the prestigious institution, Norwich University of the Arts. Why? Because I know it was not luck that allowed me to earn this placement. My sleepless nights due to studying and my 4 hours of solid researching and practice a day was all not simply luck. Luck is a probability taken personally. Success is the favorable termination of attempts or endeavors to accomplish one’s goals. I had earned what I felt I finally deserved. Can I take all the credit for my success? Quite simply the answer is no. The teachers, my peers, the facilities and my friends all equally played their role within my very own success story. I believe the King John Sixth Form has provided me with an invaluable life experience. And so I not only tremendously credit the institution as a whole, but every individual involved within. Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

To this date, I still believe what made the King John Sixth Form stand out to me was its welcoming environment and everyone’s attitude to succeed. I believe I was instantly hooked, as this attitude towards success was something completely new to me, something I had never experienced before. Honestly, I disliked being recognised by others as someone who would only amount to average goals in life, I truly wanted to be become someone successful who will achieve the very greatest of things. The King John Sixth Form provided me with a fresh start where no opinions and negativity defined what we could or could not do. I knew it would allow me to achieve greatness and if not, be a vital stepping-stone within the story. And so from the induction day onwards I hoped for a place. I eventually received an offer and was ecstatic over the news.

BY CALLUM BROWN Year 13 student at the King John Sixth Form

OTHELLO On 4th February, Sixth Form Drama students went to the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith to see Shakespeare's great tragedy 'Othello'. The play was modernised by Frantic Assembly and presented in the style of physical theatre. The production was superb and has inspired Year 12 students into writing excellent theatre reviews. Seeing the play allowed Year 13 students to compare Shakespeare’s original performances to a modern adaptation.

At first, adapting to higher education in Year 12 was a big leap from the expectations of a GCSE studies environment. We were treated like adults and given the responsibility to organise our time and studies, the foundation to our overall success. It was not long before I began to mature as a student, I found myself studying in my spare time and really attempting to achieve the best of my potential within my studies. I was encouraged by the facilities, the staff, and my peers to not only succeed, but exceed. Very quickly this led me to understand that I can achieve fantastic grades. I worked continuously throughout the year eventually to be rewarded with not only very high grades in all of my subjects but pride in what I have done.

Here’s what the students thought of the play: "This play was very different to anything I have seen before and I was thoroughly inspired" SOPHIE TOMLINSON

Now I am in Year 13, my last year at the King John Sixth Form currently preparing to complete my A level qualifications. A few months back I began to apply to various universities via UCAS. After talking about my passions and areas of interests, with fantastic inspiration and support from the staff, I applied for many graphic design courses within the top 5 design universities in

"Othello changed my perception about Shakespearean plays and I am now more open minded about exploring different genres and styles of plays" NANCY VASEY-REED

Cambridge University Shadowing Scheme I was fortunate enough to gain a place on the shadowing scheme, whereby I had a two day taster of university life at Cambridge in February. It was an absolutely amazing experience! Shadowing real university students allowed me to see and understand a completely different side to how I’ve always imagined university life would be. The students were so down to earth and reassuring; answering any questions that I had about both the academic and social life. I was able to have taster lectures and see what studying would be like. It really secured all my hopes about going to university.

EVENTS & SHOWS

hair & beauty show

leslie kleinman, holocaust survivor

On 27th February, the King John School hosted its annual Hair and Beauty Show. Years 9-11 students studying Hair and Beauty as part of their education at the school were given the opportunity to showcase their talents to an audience. Set up as a catwalk style show, the students and their models paraded down the runway – a red carpet runway no less. For the show, each student decided on a theme to work with, which ranged from 1950’s, Mexican Day of the Dead, Alice in Wonderland, Circus and many more. Using their theme, the students then created an entire look including hair, makeup and fashion styling. All were of an exceptionally high standard and the amount of effort and hard work that had been put in was clearly evident.

2015 marks 70 years since the end of WWII. To keep the memory alive, on Monday, 16th March, King John had the privilege of hearing the moving story of Holocaust survivor, Leslie Kleinman. Years 9, 10 and 12 History students attended the talk in our theatre, some shed a few tears; some were left gobsmacked by his experiences; all were extremely captivated by his words. Leslie recounted his remarkable tale of survival with passion, energy and above all forgiveness. The terrors that happened during this awful time were the stuff of nightmares, but Leslie teaches the strength in coming through such horrors with compassion and love. Love for life and people. King John students left the theatre feeling fortunate to have heard his account first hand and to have met such an extraordinary person.

It was sequins, glitter and colours galore as the show successfully got underway. Everyone involved had a wonderful evening and it was a brilliant way of showing parents and carers all the amazing work that they can achieve.

Leslie and his wife Miriam visit many schools to speak nationally about his experiences, as well travelling to Poland and Germany (including visiting Auschwitz) every year. Miriam said of Leslie’s work “It’s very important to pass on, this is his life’s work. It gives him a reason to get up in the morning”.

“Best day of my life” ELLIE-MAI DEGEN

“I am really pleased with how everything turned out and the feedback I got from everyone” FRANKIE RAFFERTY

Each year, the school is able to send students to visit Auschwitz through the Holocaust Educational Trust. This connection with the Trust is a crucial link to help the memory of the past stay with young people today.

“I was quite nervous before going on but it turned out great in the end” HANNAH WOODCOCK

“The talk went brilliantly and it was amazing for the students to experience some living history. Many of the students and staff were moved to tears by Leslie’s story. To hear someone speak passionately about forgiveness and love when they have been through such an ordeal in life leaves behind a strong message which we will try to live by.”

“What an amazing evening! All of the learners were a credit to our school, they worked so hard to produce their image for the evening and as part of their course work. The learners and their models were outstanding.”

“Leslie was very inspirational and strong and his words moved many members of the audience. His story was heart-breaking and he taught us to value life and not to repeat the traumatising tragedy that happened all those years ago. His wife was very supportive and Leslie spoke clearly and with passion. His story is one to be shared and we are all grateful he chose to share it with us.” EMILY ANDERSON, 10-06

A huge well done to the team and thank you to everyone for their support. We are very proud of them and all that they have achieved.

Year 7 girls cross country The Year 7 girls took part in the County Cross Country Championships at Stubbers , Upminster. It was a very tough course with over 35 schools from Essex competing and over 280 runners in each race. The girls ran really well and had some fantastic individual results with Sophie Wetheridge (13th) Lucy Brewster (20th) and Hollie Rex (21st) all being selected for the Essex squad to compete in an intercounties match. The 3 girls along with Victoria Walsh-Herranz (65th) made up the A team and finished 4th overall just 3 points away from a bronze medal. A fantastic achievement! The girls were also supported by other brilliant runs from Rebecca Lacey, Mollie Gray, Charlotte Thompson, Lily Brewster, Matilda Lynch and Chi Agu. A great squad of girls who have worked hard all winter. Now we need to look forward to the athletics season where we will hopefully have some sunshine!

The game its self was fast and dramatic with the lead changing between the sides. The King John boys showed great commitment, drive and passion throughout the game but no more so than when FitsWimarc managed to score a basket 4 seconds from the end to tie the game. The King John students showed great character and fight when other teams may have folded. This led to them scoring an impressive 16 points in 5 minutes and only conceding 3 points. King John were crowned the winners with 72-59 and landed the school their first county title for basketball. The boys were outstanding, and a great credit to the school. They have worked hard to achieve the results that they deserve becoming double champions (District Champions and County Champions). We are very proud of their accomplishments and look forward to success next season.

salamanca, spain 2015 On the 16th February, Key Stage 4 students visited the beautiful region of Salamanca in Spain. Our aim was to enjoy the history and culture of this university town whilst developing confidence in our Spanish abilities. The students spent the morning at the vibrant Isla language school where they worked on reading, listening, writing and speaking skills as well as learning more about the grammar. Students commented how they had more and more understanding of how the Spanish language worked as the week went on. They also enjoyed meeting students of many nationalities – all sharing a common interest- an enjoyment of the Spanish language.

After lessons, we had opportunities to participate in many activities to have fun with the language. We did cooking, dance classes, a karaoke evening, a tapas tour, a tour of the cathedral towers, a tour of the university, a photo competition, chocolate con churros sampling and a treasure hunt. All the activities were done in Spanish which added to the excitement! For our photos, see the King John VLE. The students and staff had a great time and we look forward to next year when we will be returning to Salamanca to once again combine learning and fun – ¡hasta pronto! MISS MURRAY AND MRS BARHAM
