MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear King’s Academy family, It is my honor and pride to share with you the remarkable generosity that has been extended to King’s Academy by you, our kind and giving supporters, to sustain our mission and maintain our promise of academic excellence. You have shown us that an engaged, aware and committed donor community can make a true difference in the lives of our students. With our sights set on ambitious goals that further propel King’s towards greater heights, I am truly grateful for your invaluable support towards the continuous development of effective teaching and learning at King’s, which are translated into robust academic programs, high-tech facilities across our campus, and necessary financial aid programs which make education at King’s accessible to all. Undeniably, the dedication of our generous family of donors has helped to make all this possible. Your unceasing passion for education and unwavering support of King’s Academy inspire us. In fact, I am humbled to share that since its inception, King’s has been able to offer over US$ 120 million in financial aid to thousands of talented and deserving students from Jordan, the region, and the world, thus empowering the next generation with a one-of-a-kind, transformative education of the sort that only King’s Academy can provide. Investing in our young women and men is a guarantee for a better future. Our alumni learn the values of leadership, ambition, service and a life-long love of learning, and in the 16 years since King’s opened its doors, we are already witnessing our graduates making an impact in their fields’ of work, here in Jordan and around the world. When you invest in education, you are investing in a better future not only for our students, but also for the community as a whole. Philanthropy has no limits, and we are grateful for each and every one of your contributions. King’s Academy is growing and thriving thanks, in large part, to you our distinguished donors, who have faith in us as we continue to pursue academic excellence so that our students can fulfill the mission His Majesty King Abdullah II envisioned for them, as change-makers of a shared future of peace and opportunity. Thank you once again for your philanthropic spirit, and for believing in us. With heartfelt appreciation,
Ali H. Kolaghassi Chairman of the Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear parents, alumni and friends, Exactly a year ago, give or take a few days, I visited King’s Academy for the first time. I arrived as a candidate for the headship, and after several days on campus and a multitude of meetings and interviews, I returned to the United States with a head full of ideas and a heart full of gratitude. Ideas about what is next for King’s and gratitude for the opportunity to serve as King’s fourth head of school. It was during the first day of that visit that an uncomplicated reply to a simple question put all that I thought I knew about King’s Academy into perspective. King’s ambitious founding, its compelling mission to “drive change towards a shared future of peace,” and its relentless pursuit of support for financial aid came sharply into focus. I asked a soon-to-be colleague why he chose to work at King’s. His reply was unequivocal: “Because I wholeheartedly believe that this institution is absolutely essential to the future of our county.” With that top of mind and a tenure as head of school that officially began at the end of March, it gives me immense pleasure to share with you this year’s edition of The Lion’s Pride. There is nothing more rewarding nor more humbling than to say “thank you” to you, our donors, who make everything we do at King’s Academy possible. Your support has allowed us to enrich our educational programs, upgrade our facilities, support our faculty, and provide financial aid for promising young men and women who otherwise would not be able to attend King’s Academy. Last spring, we celebrated our 15-year anniversary, and we also celebrated a royal wedding, both events inextricably linked to the future of Jordan. In 15 short years this institution has matured and prospered, and our first classes of graduates have already gone on to make their mark in the world. While at King’s, those future leaders formed lifelong relationships and collaborated on projects that will undeniably have an impact on the future of Jordan. Their appreciation for their country and for the education they received at King’s Academy is categorical. Independent schools are beautiful places. Blessed with stunning facilities, ideally located in a natural setting removed from the noise and distractions of congested urban centers, a distinguished faculty, bright and ambitious students, and academic and extracurricular programs that educate the whole child, independent schools are a blessing. King’s is one of those places. What truly separates this school, however, from all independent schools in the region, and most abroad, is our abiding commitment to enrolling a diverse population that lives and studies together, developing the global perspective and empathy critical to the future of our world and our planet. This work cannot be accomplished without the support of our loyal donors. During the next several months I will be working closely with our Chairman Ali Kolaghassi and our Board of Trustees setting our strategic goals for the near future. You can expect to hear from us, and I hope that you will reach out if you would like to discuss any aspect of King’s Academy. We are a young school, and we will always have much work to do. Knowing that there are people who support us gives me great confidence in the future of our remarkable school that is so important to the future of this captivating country. Thank you for joining us on the King’s Academy journey. With deep gratitude and good wishes,
Penny Townsend Head of School

KING’S ROWS FOR STUDENT LIFE FUND NOVEMBER 2022
School spirit was the order of the day at King’s Academy’s second annual Row for Funds event, a dynamic fundraising initiative that brought together the entire student body, faculty and staff for an energetic afternoon of rowing for a good cause. Students and employees were divided into four teams, to take turns on rowing machines for a total of 45 minutes with the goal of burning the most calories (points) for their team. The winning team that gained the most points set the minimum amount to be donated, in cash, by each of the team sponsors to the Student Life Fund. The Student Life Fund ensures that King’s students on financial aid have access to the same opportunities available to other students, guaranteeing an equal educational experience for all King’s students. The fund covers, among other things, the cost of sitting for external examinations like the SAT, university application fees and various extra-curricular activities.

ARABIC CREATIVITY COMPETITION GOES NATIONAL JUNE 2023
ALL-ALUMNI REUNION ON CAMPUS JUNE 2023
14
In June 2023, King’s Academy hosted its annual Arabic Creativity Competition, an initiative launched last year with the aim of celebrating Arabic language and culture. The Arabic Creativity Competition is the brainchild of King’s Academy alumnus Ali Shajrawi ’11, who came up with the idea in memory of the late Atef Abu Sarris, who was a longtime Arabic teacher at King’s. This year the competition was expanded to include students from all over the kingdom. The competition provides students with a platform to express themselves and demonstrate their skills and creativity in the Arabic language in a myriad of forms, including poetry, short stories, short films, literary articles and speeches.
Around 200 King’s alumni from Classes 2010 to 2022 gathered on June 8 for a reunion on campus to forge connections, reminisce, mingle with each other and with faculty members, and celebrate achievements as proud King’s graduates. It was also Head of School Penny Townsend’s first major encounter with alumni since taking the helm at King’s. ”It fills my heart with joy to witness the strong bond that connects our King’s Academy family,” Townsend said of the gathering, adding how happy she was to meet them and see what a great example they are to the younger generations of King’s students. She urges alumni to continue to inspire, empower and shape the lives of future generations” so that the legacy of King’s Academy endures for many years to come.

AN INTERVIEW WITH
ALI AND RASHA FAROUKI P’27, P’29
You have long and deep ties with King’s Academy. What made you believe that King’s would be the best place for Layla and Fawaz? Layla was the first of our children to join King’s Academy in the 8th grade. We had discussed as a family the merits of the Advanced Placement (AP) educational system and the academic culture that is unique to King’s Academy. After Layla’s experience during 8th grade, we were convinced that Fawaz would benefit from the care and support that is demonstrated by the faculty and administration at King’s Academy. It’s very evident that there is a cultural buy-in by all members of the King’s Academy community. What would you like to say about your experience as parents? We very much enjoyed our experience as King’s Academy parents. We were grateful for the way that the Middle School team created a support system to encourage Layla to fulfill her potential, and we also appreciated the open lines of communication between us as parents and the school. We’re hopeful that this same level of care for the students permeates the Upper School as well. In a part of the world that is surrounded by so much conflict and humanitarian issues, why is it also important to support a place like King’s?
16
We believe that investing in King’s is investing in the region’s future leaders. King’s mission of having scholars from all backgrounds learning together and exchanging intellectual views is incredibly valuable, nurturing young people that may shape our communities in the future. What are your thoughts on the current role of King’s in the region? What part do you see it playing in the future? We believe that King’s is one of the leading academic institutions in the region. Having King’s perform at an academic level comparable to prep schools in the US, and at the same time be steeped in the culture and tradition of our region is a brilliant combination. Hopefully with time King’s reputation will spread and attract scholars from all over the region and beyond. Why is King’s a philanthropy priority for your family? They say that charity starts at home and we are firm believers in this ethos. Our children have the privilege to be a part of the King’s community and a part of the responsibility that comes with that is giving back. Education in general is an important philanthropic priority for our family and we believe strongly in His Majesty’s vision for King’s and are happy to support it.
How do you compare King’s now and seven years ago? King’s has made incredible strides during the past seven years. While there was always a vision of what the school could be, we see all the fruits of the King’s teams’ efforts paying off now with the caliber of graduates, the growing reputation of the school, and the community pride. What advice would you give us to keep you as a supporter and inspire others like you to join our mission? Keep telling King’s success stories. There have been so many wonderful scholars who have had life-changing experiences at school, and we believe their stories should be amplified. We also believe that the school should maintain its excellent academic record and strive to excel even more. What do you expect from the recipient of the Ali and Rasha Farouki Scholarship Fund? We hope that our scholarship recipient will take advantage of all that King’s Academy has to offer. We hope that they will excel academically and have their education open doors for them that they would not have thought possible. Above all, we hope that whatever road the scholar takes, they end up giving back to the community in the future.
17
King’s Academy is founded on His Majesty King Abdullah II’s mission to “develop and empower young leaders who will drive change within and beyond their communities, and eventually across borders.” Delivering this mission depends on the strong and enduring fiscal foundation created by our donors through their annual support for King’s Academy. Unrestricted gifts enable us to cover the areas of greatest need and opportunity, supporting all aspects of our educational mission. Like every leading independent school, King’s counts on these gifts. The Annual Fund serves as the lifeblood of our institution, providing the necessary resources to enhance academic programs, faculty development, and student life. It allows the school to adapt to changing needs, invest in cutting-edge technology, and maintain state-of-the-art facilities. We see the impact of the Annual Fund throughout the school – in the growth students experience when they learn how to work as a team; in discussions between students, faculty, and parents about the context of the current crisis in our region and the importance of being open to perspectives different from their own; or in a senior personally affected by sectarian violence encouraging his classmates not to be afraid. Engaging in active listening, continuous learning, healthy debating, and asking questions are essential skills and habits that we seek to impart to our students. By contributing to the Annual Fund, you make this possible. You become a vital part of the King’s Academy community. Your support not only provides tangible benefits to current students but also helps shape the future of the school. It ensures that the institution remains a beacon of excellence in education and continues to graduate young leaders who are academically accomplished, globally aware, and committed to positive change.
BUILDING A STRONG ANNUAL FUND ONE GIFT AT A TIME 18
Supporting the Annual Fund at King’s Academy is an investment in the future. It is a commitment to the enduring legacy of a school that empowers young minds, instills a passion for lifelong learning, and prepares students to make a meaningful impact on the world. Your support helps build a strong foundation upon which the dreams and aspirations of future generations can thrive, ensuring that the King’s Academy legacy endures for years to come.

A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY AN INTERVIEW WITH
ROBERT AND MARY ENGEL, FORMER ARABIC YEAR PARENTS
How did you first come to find out about King’s Academy? RE: I was fortunate to attend Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts at the same time that King Abdullah was a student there. Though two classes behind him, I always respected his scholarship, athleticism, and generosity of spirit. I loved my time at Deerfield, so when Mary and I heard that the King had opened a school in Jordan, modeled on Deerfield, to drive academic excellence and forge the same kind of meaningful bonds across diverse backgrounds that we enjoyed as students, we were excited to support that effort. What has this experience been like for you, as an American family with children studying abroad in Jordan – in the Middle East? RE: As a family, we appreciate the need to better understand the world around us. We are Americans, and the children were raised in New York and New Jersey, but we also had the chance to live with them in London early on. These experiences have kept us open to new ways of thinking and living. When we learned about the opportunity for American students to attend King’s Academy, we jumped on it! This experience has helped our family gain a first-hand understanding of the Middle East’s culture, people and politics, and we are extremely grateful for the incredible friendships made there. Why choose to learn Arabic in specific? RE: The Arab world is immense, with over 300 million Arabic speakers in dozens of nations, including the US. To begin to understand a people and culture, familiarity with the native language is helpful. For the kids, knowing this beautiful language has helped spark great relationships with other Arabic speakers and made them better global citizens. Both Robert and Hunter, our two who studied at King’s, enjoyed Arabic so much that they continued their studies upon return to the US. Robert majored in international studies with a focus on the Middle East and Arabic language at Middlebury.
22
Using his new Arabic skills, Hunter did an independent study senior year of high school on Arab immigrants and refugees in Charlotte, where we live.
What would your message be to parents who might be interested in sending their children to study at King’s Academy?
What was the biggest impact King’s Academy has had on your family?
ME: If your children are engaged students, enjoy learning languages and exploring the world, King’s Academy is a tremendous opportunity. It is a unique and excellent learning experience on so many levels. The faculty is exceptional, the campus is beautiful and safe, and the travel opportunities are so special. Imagine the field trip to Petra! At King’s, our children loved their classes, met wonderful new friends, and were happy, healthy and well-cared for.
ME: While Rob and I had both lived abroad, neither of us knew much about daily life in the Middle East. As a result of our family’s experience with Kings, we have gained a more meaningful understanding of the history and potential of this vital, beautiful and ancient land. In addition to being Arabic Year Program parents at King’s Academy, you are also generous and long-time supporters of King’s, making an annual gift to the school for almost a full decade now. Why do you think it is important as parents to go that extra mile to donate to a school? Why do you give? RE: It is crucial to give back in whatever ways you can — with your time, talent or treasure — to educational and cultural institutions that make a positive difference in the world. King’s offers such a unique experience for young people from diverse backgrounds to get to know each other in an intimate and challenging but nurturing environment. We believe in the mission of King’s to educate the next generation, but also to allow people to appreciate the similarities and differences we share as human beings. From your experience as generous donors to many organizations around the globe, how would you explain the importance of annual giving to institutions such as King’s Academy. ME: Supporting educational institutions, especially those trying to encourage peace, partnership and good stewardship for students rich and poor, are a top priority for our family. King’s is an important institution in that it is trying to build positive relationships in a fraught region. For this and many other reasons, we believe this transformational enterprise deserves support.
Where are Robert and Hunter now? How did learning Arabic help them in their work, life, etc.? RE: Robert now lives and works in New York City in the financial sector. His fluency in Arabic and familiarity with Middle East culture continue to open doors to a magnificent world of friendships that were easy due to his cultural competency learned, in part, during his time at King’s. The same for Hunter. Now a college senior at Princeton, Hunter still keeps in touch with his friends from King’s, where he developed the confidence to explore ambitious language acquisition and travel opportunities. Just as he took on Arabic, Hunter took on learning Portuguese so he could work in a medical clinic in Rio this past summer. How can we make you feel closer to our community? ME: It would be great to have gatherings in the US once a year for alumni and parents of alumni. Maybe King’s could organize a great speaker to come talk to King’s supporters about the current situation in the Middle East or other meaningful, relevant topics.

Why Endowment? An endowed fund, established in perpetuity, is a permanent fund that earns an annual interest. The earned income is used for the purpose specified by the donor. Endowments are used to secure the future and growth of nonprofit schools and institutions like King’s Academy. Endowments provide both long-term support for our growth and financial sustainability that allow us to consistently support our students and programs. Our school’s current endowment size is US $14M. Our aim is to significantly grow our small endowment to ensure the financial sustainability of the school, especially in these days of uncertainty.

By providing a world-class educational experience for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds, King’s Academy is investing in the future of the community and region as a whole. The school’s founders and early advocates saw the Academy as a crucial step in building the capacity for economic and social opportunities in the Middle East as well as working toward a future of peace. It is only as young men and women from across the region and beyond – leaders in the decades to come – have the opportunity to learn and live together during their formative years with mutual respect and understanding, will peace and opportunity flourish.

The Senior Class Gift Endowment Every year since the founding of King’s Academy, the senior class has been asked to make a small contribution to student scholarships before they graduate. In 2018, King’s Academy created a special endowment fund to channel all senior class gifts into. These alumni endowments celebrate student giving and have a lasting impact on the school. They will serve as a reminder of each class’ generosity for years to come. The Suhail and Janwa Sikhtian GS Endowed Scholarship Fund Thanks to the generosity of Suhail and Janwa Sikhtian, King’s Academy was able to establish this endowed scholarship fund which will support the education of students at King’s Academy. This fund will be established in perpetuity – it will live as long as King’s exists – and will provide a sustainable and steady funding for our students. The Tawfiq Shaker Fakhouri Endowed Scholarship Fund This substantial gift of stock supports the school’s critical financial aid program. The stock dividends, donated by the Bank of Jordan in 2018, cover the tuition costs of a deserving student. Shaker Fakhouri, CEO of the Bank of Jordan, and his wife Suha, are proud King’s Academy parents. They are also strong advocates of His Majesty’s mission to establish a need-blind school. The fund is named in recognition of their father, the late Tawfiq Shaker Fakhouri, a founding donor and longtime supporter of King’s Academy. The Weinberg Family Scholarship Fund The Weinberg Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2022, to honor the generosity and commitment of King’s longest serving trustee Peter Weinberg. After serving on the Board of Trustees for 18 years, Weinberg decided to step down in 2022; however, his excitement about King’s and steadfast commitment continue to be evident. Weinberg was invited to remain as an honorary trustee. Proceeds from the Weinberg Family Endowed Scholarship Fund support the tuition fees of a student who demonstrates financial need and is in very good academic standing.

Faculty and Student Life Funds The Austin Chair for Excellence in Teaching This endowment was established in 2019 through the generosity of a group of King’s parents to honor Dr. John Austin, King’s Academy’s second head of school. Named the Austin Chair for Excellence in Teaching, the fund will support “those members of the King’s community whom Austin is most passionate about: our great teachers.” Proceeds of the Austin Chair endowment will support professional development for faculty and will fund an annual prize for teaching excellence, called the Austin Prize. The Brandon P. Winans Robotics Endowed Fund The Brandon P. Winans Robotics Endowed Fund was established in 2021 by Thomas and Stefanie Winans to support various activities under the robotics department at King’s Academy. The fund is named after their son who graduated from King’s in 2023. The Camille Jane Marguerite Bouquet Memorial Fund In memory of Camille Jane Marguerite Bouquet and her passion for learning and international travel, a group of her friends set up the fund to support students and faculty of King’s Academy visiting Deerfield and Eaglebrook. Bouquet attended both Eaglebrook School and Deerfield Academy, where she graduated in 2003. She had hoped to teach at King’s Academy and was pursuing a degree at Barnard College in 2006 when she died in a tragic car accident on a trip to Tanzania. The Equitable Experience Endowment Fund Every student at King’s Academy deserves an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or socio-economic status. This endowment fund is designed to help cover the short-term expenses of students receiving high levels of financial aid at King’s, in perpetuity. This fund acts as a safety net, or contingency, to improve the financial stability and student life experience of financially-challenged students, and provide them with a fair opportunity to excel and prosper. The Eric Widmer Fund for Student Life This fund was established in recognition of King’s Academy’s founding headmaster, Dr. Eric Widmer. It aims to honor his leadership, steadfast attentiveness to our educational excellence and legacy of thoughtful development of an integrated life at King’s Academy. The fund supports crucial aspects of life outside the classroom, such as travel for regional exploration, athletics contests, debate competitions and leadership conferences, invitations for guest performers and speakers, as well as equipment for our performing arts program.

The Hunt Ethridge Visiting Students and Faculty Endowed Fund Hunt Ethridge created the Visiting Students and Faculty Endowed Fund in 2007, after reading a US news article about the establishment of King’s Academy. The fund supports our robust global exchange program for students and faculty who wish to attend King’s Academy for a semester up to a year. Ethridge hopes that his young daughter will one day be able to attend King’s as an exchange student. The Michael and Amani Dagher Science Wing Endowed Fund King’s Academy’s science wing was named for Michael Dagher to honor his extraordinary generosity to the school. The Michael and Amani Dagher Science Wing Endowed Fund, created in 2017, ensures the preservation and maintenance of this portion of the Academy Building. Michael Dagher, president of DAMA Ventures, is a highlyregarded pioneer of Jordan’s telecommunications industry. The Mousa Budair Endowed Fund This endowed fund was established through the generosity of Mousa Budair, who strongly believes in empowering young Jordanians not only by providing a top-notch educational experience, but also by offering various nonacademic opportunities for Jordanian youth to enhance their skills. Proceeds from this fund will be directed towards funding the Jordan Model Parliament (JMP), a mock parliamentary conference held annually at King’s Academy with participation from schools nationwide. The annual event offers students the opportunity to research and debate national and global issues. Students become more informed citizens, gain confidence by learning to voice their opinions, and develop a range of skills, including leadership, teamwork and project management.
The Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa Distinguished Chair in Theory and Practice of Knowledge The fund was established by the generosity of Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, the crown prince and prime minister of Bahrain and the commander-in-chief of the Bahrain Defense Force. The fund supports visiting faculty from outside of Jordan in order to strengthen cross-cultural exchange and internationalism at King’s Academy. The Tawfiq Fakhouri Chair for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership Endowed Fund This fund was created through the generosity of Samer and Maram Fakhouri with the aim of sponsoring and supporting the year-long entrepreneurship course at King’s Academy. This endowed fund was established to enable the school and faculty members teaching this course to invest more in the entrepreneurship program and expand it beyond the classroom. The Unrestricted Endowment Fund The Unrestricted Endowment Fund supports the areas of greatest need at King’s Academy during any given year. These may include, but are not limited to, financial aid, buildings and ground maintenance, faculty and staff professional development, and guest speakers. The Weinberg Distinguished Chair in Peace and Prosperity The Weinberg Chair in Peace and Prosperity was established by Sidney “Jim” Weinberg and Peter Weinberg with the hope of promoting understanding among all regions of the world, and to encourage students and faculty to build personal and professional relationships that surpass national and societal borders. The Chair will support the teaching of conflict resolution and regional studies throughout the school curriculum.
The Pegasus Fund for Athletic Excellence This fund was established to support the growth of the Athletic Department at King’s Academy and to provide steady and sustainable funding to athletics at King’s Academy. The Peter Nilsson Endowed Fund for Professional Development This fund was established through the generosity of Board of Trustee members, family and friends to honor Peter Nilsson dedication to King’s Academy during his tenure as its third head of school, and will fund projects and initiatives that serve the improvement of teaching and learning for the benefit of future generations of young leaders, in perpetuity.

Scholarships and Financial Aid Education is a vital process that can transform lives, advance societies and create a better world. This is why King’s Academy considers scholarships a necessary and life-changing element of our school, as they ensure the diversity of our student body who come from wide ranging socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. As a private preparatory and independent school, King’s relies on fundraising to maintain the highest level of academic excellence and, therefore, attracting the best and the brightest students remains our highest priority. We will continue working hard with our remarkable alumni, parents, trustees and friends to make sure that cost is never an obstacle preventing a bright student from receiving an excellent education. This is our responsibility toward a new generation and toward ourselves. Through its strong financial aid and scholarship program, King’s Academy currently provides financial support to more than 50% of its student body. This means that over half of our students receive some sort of financial support to pursue their education in an institution that is home to excellent international and local faculty, dedicated staff and world-class facilities. Since its inception, King’s Academy has granted more than US $100 million to student financial aid and scholarships, making it possible for more than 1,000 students to access the unique educational experience offered by King’s.
