The Middle School Newspaper at King’s Academy Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving? by Selina Halaseh On a holiday, it is traditional to eat foods that remind us of the purpose of the holiday. Thanksgiving is a beloved American holiday. As the name suggests, on this holiday people are thankful for all the blessings in their lives. People gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday in November to enjoy a traditional meal and to give thanks for life’s many blessings. Even if family members live far apart, they will try to come together for a family reunion at Thanksgiving. Celebrating Thanksgiving without a turkey seems a little wrong. You might be wondering “Why do we eat turkey, not chicken, on Thanksgiving?” Sure, the best answer is because it’s delicious, but as you probably know there’s a lot of history behind this Thanksgiving turkey. The history of the Thanksgiving turkey is a bit of a mystery. Nobody knows exactly how this particular bird earned a place of honor at the table each November, but historians have a few different theories. First theory: thanks to letters and records kept by early American settlers, we know that when the colonists sat down to dine with the Wampanoag Indians, beef and fowl were on the menu. This historical meal would later become known as the first Thanksgiving. Although historians cannot say for sure which types of fowl were served up that day, a letter written by pilgrim Edward Winslow mentions a turkey hunting trip before the meal. Another theory attributes the Thanksgiving turkey to the Queen of England. During the 16th century, a fleet of Spanish ships sunk on their way to attack England.
According to legend, Queen Elizabeth received this news while eating dinner. She was so thrilled that she ordered another goose to be served. Some historians say the early settlers were inspired by the queen's actions and roasted a turkey instead of a goose. Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays, where you can be with family and friends and eat turkey.
Thanksgiving Traditions by YonSu Hwang Thanksgiving is an annual holiday that celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year in Unites States and Canada. This year, Thanksgiving is the 22nd of November. In the United States Thanksgiving has been celebrated since 1863, but nationally it was celebrated since 1789. In the ancient times, native people in North America started celebrating Thanksgiving to give thanks for successful harvests, to hope for the good growing season in the early spring, and for other good fortunes. So, giving thanks was the main reason to celebrate thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, families and friends gather together and have a special meal. The meal often includes turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Usually for the dessert of the feast, people eat pies flavored with pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, and apple. On Thanksgiving there are also vegetarian foods. It is usually vegetarian turkey which is made out of tofu, and other vegetable dishes. Not only in America, the traditions of the wishbones are celebrated by Europe and was started by Europe. This wishbone tradition is from the ancient Italian civilization passed to the Etruscans, Romans, and to the English. Some families break the turkey’s collarbone which is the wish bone. After the meat is eaten and removed from the bones, two people take one parts each and pull. So, the person who has the larger piece after pulling gets their wishes granted.
Volume 3, Issue 3 On Thanksgiving, there is a White House tradition of “pardoning” the White House turkey. President Harry S. Truman was the first president to receive a turkey from the Poultry and Egg National Board and the National Turkey Federation but George H.W. Bush was the first president to allow and officially pardon a Thanksgiving turkey. In the ceremony, the president grants them to live out of the from for their rest of their lives by pardoning the turkey.
back a fraction of what you spent. It’s a huge scam, but recruits don’t know it. The ones most vulnerable to falling to MLMs are women— typically with children to support— that are lured in by the promise of making thousands at home. They pour their hearts and souls into the company and end up losing money. They call themselves consultants. Anti-MLMers call them “huns” because of their frequent use of the word hun.
Thanksgiving is also an opportunity to help others. Some people donate food at the homeless shelters. Or people volunteer their time to spend the day and helping people in need. Some schools encourage their students to be involved in the communities of helping others. They will learn the value and responsibility of helping others.
MLM companies include LuLaRoe, a clothing company with such bad quality leggings that they had to create infographics on how to put them on without ripping them; DoTerra, which sells essential oils that they claim can cure diseases and calm down children with special needs as well as heal pets with infections (spoiler alert: it makes everything worse) and even, say some consultants, cure cancer (the oils don’t do anything); Herbalife, with its wraps and drinks that claim to lose you weight but are actually just placebos and toxins; Mary Kay, a company that sells mediocre makeup; and Rodan + Fields, which are skincare products that burn and break out skin, are filled with sulfur and peroxide, and are way overpriced; LipSense, which is a lipstick company with stocking problems, a cult-like system, pigment issues, and outdated graphic design; and Amway, selling beauty and home products and is described by ex-sellers as a cult.
In New York, they celebrate the thanksgiving by doing parades too. This parade celebration was started since 1924 in United States. More than 3.5 million people from the city and more than 50 million people at home celebrate this parade by watching floats, performing and watching theaters, and musical acts and parades down the Central Park West which is the most famous Thanksgiving parade in United States.
MLMs and How To Fight Them by Lara Abuali MLM stands for Multi-Level Marketing. Multi-level marketing is when somebody advertises or sells a product by messaging friends and family online, hosting parties that are about the product, or selling at craft fairs. Typically, when you join an MLM, you spend a minimum of US$100 on an inventory to start selling and have to go to lengths to get people interested in your products. Supposedly, you get paid for every person you recruit to also sell products. Sound familiar? This is because MLMs are pyramid schemes and scams disguised as helpful, get-richquick plans. The problem is that these MLMs claim to earn you thousands of dollars while working in your own hours, when the truth is, you lose much more money than you earn. Hundreds of dollars are wasted on inventories and events, and you’d be lucky to earn
Some teachers may know the disappointment in reconnecting with an old friend over WhatsApp or Facebook only for them to ask you to join them on their journey and earn extra money through Younique or banish negative emotions and earn a little moola with doTerra. Fighting MLMs starts with education. For example, if a friend is about to fall for a massive scam, perhaps you can show them this article or explain to them that it is a scam designed to take your money and leave you in the dust. If they prattle on about downlines and working your way up, explain that there’s a one in a million chance you’ll earn a decent wage from an MLM. Red flags include if a friend you haven’t seen in a while messages you and uses the word “Hun” as well as several emojis, possibly about a job opportunity. If you see a post on social media or a message about
Volume 3, Issue 3 buttery soft leggings, fat-fighters, LipSense, being a #BossBabe, and getting rich on their own time, educate them about MLM scams and then, if they persist, block them. MLMs are scams designed to target vulnerable people with outrageous promises and end up putting them all in debt. Don’t waste your time on them.

Air Pollution by Saad AlSaraf Today, I want to raise awareness about air pollution. So, what is air pollution? Well, air pollution happens when gases and particles go together in the air and the atmosphere, and cause harm to all living things in this planet. Moreover, it can damage the natural cycles of the Earth. Most of the time humans are a source of air pollution but nature can be a source too. Nature can create eruptions of volcanoes and dust storms and forest fires, and all of those can cause air pollution. Humans can also cause air pollution especially in large cities. Human air pollution is caused by factories, power plants, cars, airplanes, chemicals, fumes from spray cans, and methane gas from landfills. Well not only that-- humans cause the most air pollution by burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels like coal and oil and natural gas. When humans burn fossil fuels this releases all sorts of gases into the air causing air pollution. Air pollution has many negative effects on the environment. Air pollution causes climate change. When humans release carbon dioxide gas into the air, it damages the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects us from harmful rays from the sun. The ozone will not help us anymore because it is getting damaged from air pollution. Air pollution can also make people feel sick. It makes humans struggle to breathe and cause diseases such as lung cancer, respiratory infections, and heart disease. It
