THE SIR PETER SQUIRE MEMORIAL PAVILION CAMPAIGN
Working with the King's Community to restore one of Bruton's most iconic buildings to its former glory. King's Bruton is building on the incredible success of our 500th year with ambitious plans to sympathetically restore the 1920s sports pavilion on Hyde. The pavilion has been at the heart of sporting life at the School for almost a century but now needs to be restored, enhanced and brought back to its former glory. The plan is to restore the original pavilion with a major focus on enhancing the reception and entertainment space on offer to parents, players and supporters of all sports matches. The restored pavilion will also offer better facilities for Old Brutonians, families and the wider King's Community at events like the Day of Celebration and for the local community at external sports events. New, contemporary changing facilities will be built alongside the pavilion so that the functionality of the changing space will be separated from the social and entertainment focus within the pavilion. The new changing rooms will provide quality facilities for home and away teams as well as for referees and umpires. The restored pavilion and the new changing rooms will ensure that we have facilities to match the outstanding sports pitches annually prepared by Adie Davis, our legendary Head Groundsman. The overall cost is estimated at £620,000 and we aim to open the pavilion and changing rooms ready for the 2023 cricket season. We are delighted that the restored pavilion will be named The Sir Peter Squire Memorial Pavilion to honour Sir Peter's outstanding contribution to the School as a pupil, parent, Governor, Senior Warden and recently as a grandparent of children at both King's and Hazlegrove. Based on the success of The Queen Elizabeth Music School, we hope that this campaign will also be funded as a collaborative effort between King's and the King's Community.

Project and campaign overview The project was signed off by Governors late in 2019 and the planning permission process is already underway with building scheduled to begin in July 2022. The official opening of the Sir Peter Squire Memorial Pavilion will be in the Summer Term 2023, which will be 60 years since Sir Peter finished his school career. The School is incredibly grateful to those Old Brutonians and members of the wider school community who have pledged almost £200,000 towards the cost of the new pavilion. Due to the impact of the pandemic, the School will look to fund the majority of the remaining costs through other means, however, we would like to give everyone the opportunity to donate towards this exciting project as we know it holds fond memories for many.
If you would like to donate to the Sir Peter Squire Memorial Pavilion, please contact: Emilie Head, Development Co-ordinator eeh@kingsbruton.com or use the giving form attached to this document.
“Along with the Memorial Hall, the pavilion on Hyde is for many Old Brutonians one of the iconic buildings of their schooldays, the backdrop not just to generations of team photographs but also the memories of afternoons at games. We were therefore delighted by the Governors decision to prioritise its refurbishment. When complete, with its photos, trophy cases and boards, this will restore for future generations of Brutonians, a focal point for the School’s sporting life, and a place to nurture, showcase and convey forward the sporting ethos that King's has cherished, perhaps more than anything else. We were further touched by the Headmaster’s decision to honour our father’s lifetime contribution to the School by naming the refurbished building in his memory. Dad was committed not just to the School in general, but to future generations of youngsters in particular. Giving them decent pitch-side facilities would have been high on his agenda; as would enabling pupils to proudly host visiting teams and exercise the off-pitch sporting hospitality that is so important. The Imperial War Museum’s Oral History Archive records Dad saying: “Bruton allowed me to do all that I wanted to do in terms of academics, in terms of sport (by that stage I was a keen sportsman), in terms of amateur dramatics (which I enjoyed), and in terms of leadership. It allowed me to develop in those ways, the attributes the Royal Air Force were looking for...” We are sure that the refurbished pavilion will be an important part of ensuring the School continues to offer youngsters the platform to develop the attributes they will need to achieve their ambitious, just as it did for us all.” Richard Squire Priory House 87/92
“Sir Peter was a wonderful friend, whose congenial company I greatly miss; the School's recent good fortunes were initiated in part under his leadership and that legacy continues to flourish. Among his many talents, he was a keen sportsman, who like many Brutonians, would have retained fond memories of the School's playing fields, surrounded by the magnificent Somerset countryside and overlooked by the ageing Pavilion on Hyde: memories of warm summer evenings and the smell of freshly cut grass, of crisp winter days and the prospect of enjoying a hot drink back at ‘the House’. No better way, therefore, to recognise the great contribution Sir Peter has made to the School, and to pay homage to memories of the playing fields of King's, than by enhancing and adding to that iconic Pavilion, in the knowledge that many future generations of Brutonians will benefit from the facilities it will provide: a winning combination, which I enthusiastically support.” Roger Beach, New House 60/64 Donor “Peter was the very epitome of a gentlemen, always more interested in your news and wellbeing than of his own yet if anyone had bragging rights it was him. I never heard him introduce himself as anything other than Peter, yet his title and decorations open a window to his many achievements throughout his distinguished career in the RAF. In retirement he was Chairman of the board of trustees at The Imperial War Museum, Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, President of the RAF Club, Deputy Lieutenant for Devon, Governor and Senior Warden of King's Bruton. I am privileged to have known him from our days at school and delighted he and Carolyn were able to be with us for my 50th & 70th birthday celebrations. He is much missed by his family and all who knew him - a very, very special individual - so the Sir Peter Squire Memorial Pavilion is a fitting tribute to a fine pupil, sportsman and friend of the School, please donate generously.” David Graham, Old House 60/65 Donor
AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR PETER SQUIRE GCB, DFC, AFC, DL, DSc, FRAeS (P59/63) Peter Squire was one of the most loyal Old Brutonians of his generation, remembered with deep affection by many of his contemporaries as well as countless others who he met in following decades. He came to King's in 1959, where he joined Priory House. He was a diligent, careful pupil but was happiest perhaps playing sport, soon earning a place in many teams where his teammates responded well to his enthusiastic, never-say-die attitude. He had two seasons in the cricket 1st XI in 1962 and 1963. According to a report in The Dolphin, he kept wicket with 'acrobatic gusto'. He was also a key member of the 1962 1st XV as a tireless flank forward. From a young age Peter seemed destined to follow his father by becoming a pilot in the RAF. On leaving King's, Peter entered Cranwell, graduating in 1966. He soon became an outstanding pilot, flying Hunters in Singapore, then acting as an instructor at RAF Valley in Anglesey. In 1972, he won the Wright Jubilee Trophy for solo aerobatics, and in 1973-74, he was the team leader of the Red Arrows.
In the Falklands War, in 1982, he led the No. 3 (F) Squadron of Harriers into action, and was awarded the DFC for bravery. Subsequently, he filled a number of high-profile posts in the MOD and at RAF Strike Command, culminating in his appointment, in 2000, as Chief of the Air Staff. As an individual, Peter's interest in others was always evident. He was a compassionate and thoughtful man, a good listener who was keen to understand people's concerns and aspirations, and to give considered, and always sound, advice. In 1990 these qualities led the teaching staff at King's to ask Peter if he would become their representative on the Governing Body. This he did. In 2004 he was appointed Senior Warden, a post he held with great distinction from 2004 to 2010. Peter married Carolyn in 1970 and their three sons, Christopher (P85/90), Richard (P87/92) and Edward (P93/98), all attended both Hazlegrove and King's.
