Student Union There is strong upport for student union and the framework they provide for selteducation through the intellectual, sporting, political and recreational activities that complement academic pursuits.

School Curriculum The CVCP strongly supports reform of the sixth form curriculum and welcomes the start being made with AS levels. It accepts that chools must continue to provide an educational base for all children.

The main point of the Paper are as follows:

Academic Standard Universities are confident that their academic tandards are equal to the highest in the world but they al 0 accept that their procedures for maintaining and monitoring those standards should be made more public.

Student umbers Present policie are calculated to reduce the output of graduates by about 14% by the la te 1990s. Compared with its maJ or economic competitors the UK has a smaller proportion of its work force with first degrees.

Research niversities carry ou t most of the country's fundamental re earch and are increa ingly involved in its application. This research is of the greatest importance to the nation and the universities have pursued it over the years with distinction.

The economic and social recovery of the country should not be impeded by a lack of people with the intellectual and perso-

0 SMOKING DAY -

Have you thought of giving up smoking or are you a 'side-stream' smoker wishing your colleague would break the habit?

Look out for the leaflets, posters and badges around the college on March 12. ow may not be your moment to give up smoking, but try to cut down and plan to give up at the end of the summer term.

Most of us leave the pollution of London for a week or more for a well earned break, o leave your cigarettes in the smog this summer and return without them for the new academic year in October 1986.

Let's aim to make King's the first nosmoking college in Britain.

TRODUCING THE KING'S COLLEGE CAREERS ADVISERS This academic year the University Career Advisory Service introduced a new team of Careers Advisers to King's with the aim of co-ordinating the service it pro ides at Chel ea, Kensington and Strand, and of actively promoting the employment of King's graduates througlDut the public and private sector.

Dr eil Harris - the senior career advi er a graduate in Physics who joined the Career Advisory Service after a career in industrial and academic research in metallurgy and material science, came to King's after eight in charge of the Careers Service at Imperial College. In addition to his work as a careers adviser Neil writes extensively about many aspects of graduate employment.

Mrs Anne Avant recently returned to careers advisory work after a spell at Senate House where she was the University Redeployment Advi er. A graduate in Philosophy, her early career was in educationa psychology research in the USA and personnel management in industry. Anne has worked in the careers advisory service at L.S.E., Queen Mary College and University College. ow she is advising students at the Strand site and also at Westfield College.

Miss Dinah Langley graduated in Law and her wide ranging career includes a stint recruiting for local government, as an as istant in the legal department of the British Standards Institution, librarian and helping to run an international magazine.

She first became involved in careers advisory work when she joined the l.L.E.A. Careers Service. Currently advising students at the Strand office of the Careers Service, she also has experience of careers work in many other University of London colleges.

Mr Derek Mortimer, a graduate in Electrical Engineering started his career as an engineer in the aircraft indu try. Later he became Training Manager and Man power Adviser to British Airways, and then worked for the Institution of Electrical Engineers giving advice on career development and continuing education to their members. Derek is currently advising students at the Kensington and Chelsea site.

Dr Sue Dirmikis needs no introduction to King's College. After graduating in Mathematics and Chemistry in her native ew Zealand and spending some time as a teacher, she came to King's to research for her Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Sue then spent six years doing research into thyroid disease at Sheffield University before returning to become a careers adviser at Queen Elizabeth College eight years ago.

Since then she has worked as careers

adviser at both Kensington and Strand a well a gaining considerable experience in the career advi ory ervice of many other college of the niver ity.

M RK B ILEY PPE L PROGRESS REPORT In the 1anuary i sue of Comment Ioutlined the effect of multiple sclerosi on Mark Bailey. a techOlcian 10 King' College Pharmacy Department who, at the age of 2 will be forced to give up his career. In the article I uggested that a financial appeal to help Mark begin the new difficult chapter 10 hI ragile life would glve him material and psychological comfort.

My inference that the c.ollection for Mark would demonstrate a sen e of community in the newly merged college has clearly struck a chord. Comments I have received have emphasi ed what I can best ummarise a a rich vein of fellow hip which existed at King's, Queen EUlabeth and helsea Colleges and that we wish this goodwill to be incorporated into our current way of life. The response in the two week since my article has given me the impression that Mark ha become under the care of an enlarged famI.1y. Daily I have been touched by the genero ily of individual donations and the warrrth of the letters which have been sent so far. Over ÂŁ. 50 has been collected.

I have spoken to Mark about his immediate needs. It is dear that he misse his freedom of movement mo t of all. I have therefore set a target of 14 5 which will pay for an electric wheelchair. One way or another I expect that we shall rea(;h that target and that in so doing King's 'ollege London (KQC) will be the ri(;her for it.

'Where d 'you catch the number 66 to Zanskar?'

'Where's Zanskar?' ven t the height of the Raj, British artograph r were unable [Q penetr te to thlS mo t 1 olated of mountam kmgdoms, nor even to name it corre tly. Many atla e and maps till all it Zaskar: but as we trekked to the highe t InhabIted vaUe 10 the world, we reall ed that we were travelling beyond the boundaries of over a millenium of world history, to a land laid bare by sun and now.

Several year ago the BBC made a do umentary about this Shangri-La in Western Ladakh, impenetrable except over mountain range which wall it in on all sides or along It torrent's frozen cour e during winter. A cUm b to even teen thousand feet was needed to get there, which seemed a little more than our normal ugu t stroll along the pier at Southend.

And so it proved to be.

Our jumping-off point was Snnagar, and in the sultry evening we Jumped of our house-boat into the dark, cool, green lake, assured by our host of' 0 problem'. 0thing is con idered a problem in India, lea t of which is the open ewer in which we swam.

A one wise local doctor put it, 'Goodness gracious, it kills us poor Indians ... : I don't know what it gets up to in the English belly. ' Srinagar 'Seven-8tep' aside, three climbers, one guide and three pony-boys drove a hundred miles east, ever c10 er to the Great Himalayan Range which we had come to conquer. In keeping with Ka hmir! tradition, we had a bowl of tea before we "et off, which for the gourmet is a mixture of boiled 'green' tea and butter, not to mention alt, bicarbonate and a lot of sugar. It was enough to get anyone going!

By the end of the fir t day we had climbed over four thousand feet and camped at thirteen thousand feet c10 e to the top of the Pas. . the un dipped into the layer of du t which had ri en above the vast Indian plains behind us, the mountains reflected its aura of red, which somehow penetrated beyond the imagination into the very depth of the soul.

Suddenly we were pre ented with our first medical problem. Hassan, the chief pony-boy. came to us, forearms covered with a horrible rash. After a lot of que tion , it was discovered that Hassan's diet was limited to polished rice and goat meat, and it was concluded that the cause of the disorder wa vitamin deficiency. One look

at hi gums ... and treatment started.

A t the summit of the first pass, sheltering from the hail beneath a rock, we not only found the rare blue Himalayan poppy. but al 0 the ominous portent of a past expedition, a pile of hominoid ... or were they Yeti ... bones? t this point, our great Indian guide, a Tensing-like figure, came to us, complaining both of gastric fever and other 'complications', including hypertension (180/150): we both thought he too would drop dead soon unless he received treatment. However, in keeping with Indian cliches, we both insisted that there was' 0 problem " and after a brief halt we started up the Wardwan Valley, deeper into the Himalayas. The la t village we reached was Inshin, before our assault on Nun-Kun, a twenty-four thousander, lording over Zan kar.

Here we met the local doctor, to whom we off-loaded some of our exce tablets which we had so providently packed. On taking a stroll around the village, we were impressed by the existence of a local convenience but horrified. not only by its tate of repair, but also by it position: at the top of the village striding the water supply. It later transpired that the village wa plagued by amoebic dyssentry, with forty-two ca es alone that year to date, and it uddenly began to dawn on us that many of India' problems did not stem primarily from a lack of medical care, but rather from a hypocritical lack of primary health care, some, of the most basic 'sanitary' kind.

The disadvantage of having treated Hassan so successfully was that the mountains soon echoed with reports of 'Dr Living-

stone's great medical powers'. Camp was soon swamped with mountain herdsmen crying out for the attention of the 'Sahib " including many with cateracts and severe disformities which really needed urgent surgical attention. Soon our own supply of antibiotics and ga tro-intestinal tablets had all but gone. Eventually we reached the base of the vast Bobang Glacier over which we had to pa s, and pitched our tent in the hope of better weather.

At dawn we saw, and beheld, a black horse and it rider cro ing the wift flowing torrent at the base of the glacier.

He rode alone with a bag on his back carefully balanced in his hand: perhaps it was some fresh goat meat for sale. He entered our camp, dismounted, and cautiously opened his bag. We leant down to look, and there was an infant very ill with mumps. All we had was a dwindling store of antibiotics, and we got out our last course of tablets. We then communicated to the father that although a continuous course for at least a week might prevent a secondary infection, warmth, food and drink were the best medicine. As quietly as he had come, he left us and an old hepherd uddenly appeared in his place, who offered to guide u up the glacier between the treacherous crevasses. Grateful for his help we reached the top of the pass, and took our first glimpse of the frozen twin peaks of un-Kun. The old hepherd had now left us, and our guide had no idea which way to go. The weather rapidly closed in and it began to snow.

We started climbing Bobang before it wa realised we had lost our way, and after an hour of panic from our guide, we ended up in glorioLls rout down towards Zanskar.

At mneteen thousand feet, concentration on anything is impos ible, and only one thmg seems to be important: survival.

Thu we reached Zanskar, a land Without trees, where the yak is man's only means of urvival. He eats it as meat wears Its kins as clothes, and uses its droppings as fuel to keep alive in a land both of intense I radiation in the summer, and indescribable cold in the winter, when temperatures fall below -40 C. At the foot of un-Kun, we came across a road, and along that road we caught a bus: yes, they do have a bus of a kind, if not the number 66, to Zanskar. And it was by this route that we left for Leh ... and civilization: what a come-down!

LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH AT THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND DE TISTRY How and why the disease of Leukaemia develops i still not fully understood by do tor today. However, thanks to a research grant from the Cancer Research Campaign of ÂŁ49,441, research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry by Dr Farzin Farzaneh of the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynaecology may be leading to a much greater comprehension of this form of cancer.

It i known that in certain types of leukaemic cells, maintained in the laboratory, it i possible to partially overcome the leukaemic state by exposing the cells to appropriate drugs. However, the way in which the drugs change this state is not really known.

Dr Farzanch has isolated from the drug re pan ive cells, a number of mutants unable to re pond to the drugs. D A fragment which have been separated from normal cells are now being introduced into the mutant cells. Thus a small number of the mutants will acquire a normal copy of the gene in which they were defective and therefore become responsive to the drug. A cheme ha been developed for the identification and propagation of the e cells. Dr Farzaneh anticipates that they will then be able to Identify and isolate the gene or genes who e function is required for the reversal of the leukaemic tate in these cell. The Identification of uch a gene will make a major contribution to the understanding of leukaemia and improve the eventual prospect of therapy for this disease.

THE FIRST COLLEGE MAY BALL Have many of you felt a little disappointed by the lack of any major Ball in the College calendar? Well you are not alone!

We thought it was about time that an official College Ball was initiated and what better time to start a tradition than this year - the first full year of the new College.

The Ball is to be held on Saturday 3rd May at the Savoy Hotel and promises to be a unique evening. The tickets are open to all mem bers of the College and we hope it will provide an opportunity for staff and students from all campuses to mix in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

Obviously a major consideration is cost!

We felt that as the first Ball of its kind, it should be an event befitting the tradition of the old colleges. It may seem, at

first, that £55 a double ticket is expensive, but if you think about it, the Ball does offer:

higher this year than last, according to the annual urvey of the As ociation of Graduate Career Advisory Services.

More employer are looking for graduates and, with output from universities down this year, the total pool of graduates looking for Jobs will, in 1986, for the first time be no bigger than in the previous year.

Commenting on the survey, Or eil Harris, Head of the areers Advisory Service at King's said, 'This should be a good year for our students seeking employment.

While opportunities in manufacturing ind ustry are sligh lly lower, th ose in the service sector - particularly finance are higher. Civil Service recruitment is stable at around 3500 graduate of all disciplines, H.M. Forces and the Police are recruiting strongly. Soon there will be a desperate shortage of teachers - not just in Physics and Mathematics. Vacancies in Account:· ing and Software are booming and those in retailing are at a high leve!.'

The survey doe stress, however, that graduate still need to be f1exible in their approach to job-hunting. Recruitment i still very competitive and there are serious employment problems in many parts of the cou n try.

GOOD WISHES FROM THE CARDI AL One of the features of King's is the way the ha plains of different Christian denominations work so closely together.

A dramatic expression of this ecumenical spirit was in evidence at the farewell ervice for Myles Tempany. A Roman Catholic Mass was celebrated in the Colleg Chapel, at which the Dean preached and at which everyone was made to feel totally at home. Even Cardinal Hume was present in spirit. He wrote to the Dean of the ollege asking him 'to express my admiration and gratitude to Myles Tempany for his 40 years service to King's College.'

Well. I think it has got to be more accountable in the "en e of being more open. People ought to know why they are doing things. It i. no good hid· ing behind secrecy; you can't do things like that any longer when talking about public money. It's not their money. it's public money and people wam to see the criteria on which it is allocated. ~ accountable in the sen e of being more open; accountable al 0 in the sense of being more repre· entative, not JUSl of the uni· versities but of lhe intere ts in higher education.

Can I turn to academic salaries?

I have to declare a personal interest on this one. My wife is a university lecturer.

Putting that totally on one side, what is the Labour Party thinking on the current dispute and, in particular, the concerns that are emerging about whether we are approaching another braindrain situation?

Well, as you know on the teachers front we are in fa\'our of an inquif)'. It does seem lO me that the inquif)1 idea may have some relevance too when we are looking at the university side. There i. no doubt that university lecturers have dropped behind and they are even dropping now behind lecturers in polytechnics in their field.

The way thing have gone, I think there is a very sound case for an inquif)', which I think is al 0 supported by the Vice· hancellors.

Do you think there are elements in the present situation which might lead some people to conclude that a differential salary rate for different categories of academic staff is more appropriate, , .?

No, I don't want to enter that contrO\'er y. I think there are trong arguments for continu· ing the present po ition and I don't believe that that' going to be the way forward. \'('e have to tackle the general problem of the fact that universit\· lecturers are falling behind and we can't think we are going to get away with the expen e hy paying ome people more and

Yes. I am not against in"titu· tion gelling money from industf)' and private fund~ a.." long as thi is not an excuse for CUlling back public fund· ing to higher education. a." it seems to be under the pre~el1t administration. I think ine\'itably there are limitation~ on that approach--<.lepending on industry and lhe private -ector -and there are po sibk ruUlgers in it as well, if it goes too far.

I think you will recall it was

a Labour ecretary of tate who first introduced the concept of differential fees for overseas tudents ... What line do you envisage the Labour Party taking if they come to office? \X' e need to ha \'C a fre'h look at this whole question of overseas students and what I would like to do is to have a \'en' quick enquLf)' into i!. I am concern<.:d about the situation to· day, about the pOSSibility that we are losing contacts, vef)' imponant contacts in overseas countries by our policy of discriminating apparently against oversea..~ students. On the other hand, clearly we don't have unlimited funds M) the kind of thing I am looking for is a much more generous scholar· ship system which is directed at certain coumries and certain type of students '.vhich would assist the Third World and also be of use to thi country.

So that would be an individual need-ba ed sy tern rather than a thorough change in pre ent arrangements?

It might be a combination of the two.

The Government has igoalled its intention to modify tenure through legislation, though the exact form of legislation is not yet clear, Does the Labour Party accept there i any case for the modification of the pre ent tenure arrangements--which of course vary sub tantially between different universities---<>r not?

No. I mean we wouldn't seek to change the basis of the tenure: we've no intention of doing thar.

And you don't think there i' a need for 'performance indicators' or whatever you care to call them, in relation to academic staff performance.

I want univer~it\ lecturers and pol} teLhnic lecturer" to be ef· fecti\'e teacher" and I thmk there ma,· well he a case for induction' cour"e" and aho re· fre\her cour"e" in teach 109 technique. I think teaching i~ a very difficult thing which you need experience, expeni~e and ad\'ice in. So I think there may be a c<u e for tha!.

Can this country, given the confines of the future economy even within a fairly optimistic reading, afford to invest in basic re earch across a1l the disciplines ... ?

There may be "ome case for '>l:'lecthit}', but the general point ahout research i." can we afford not to invest in research, if I could turn the que tion back to you. This i a general argu· ment, i."n't it, about higher edu· cation? Can we afford not to?

And I have to say both about research and about higher edu· cation as a whole, it does seem that higher education is very, very imponam for the future economic well·being of the country, and if we start to get into the argument that we can't afford it, then it i~ a sort of self· defeating argument, because if we cut back there we destroy the seedcorn. I think that ap. plie to research as it applie~ 10 higher education ;L~ a whole.

In closing can I look back again to the interview that Neil Kinnock gave me three years ago , . , Hi judgement then was that if he had to define a single priority it was the needs of the 16-19 year old age group, There wiU be some in universities who will be a little sceptical about promises in advance of office. Would you still define that as the top priority?

Certainly that i. one of the top prioritie~. If I gave my four priorities, the first is to expand nursef)' education. the econd is to tf)' and put .,ome more resources into primary and secondan' education to reduce cl asse , and improve qualit~; the third i the 16- 19 group a.." 25 YEARS IN BIOPHYSICS / n October 1960 it was announced in , ature' that a new society, The British Biophysical Society, was to be formed, It inaugural meeting was held at King's College in December 1960. The main subjects were muscular contraction and the structure of ribonucleic acid. Professor J T Randall then Wheatstone Professor of Physics at King's was chairman of the subcommittee that organised it. It was Professor Randall who later started the Department of Biophy ic at King's and recruited Jean Hanson, the eminent muscle scientist to it. Ever since, the subject of muscular contraction has been an area of strength in the Department.

To mark the 25 th Anniversary of the Biophysical Society the Christmas meeting was again held at King s at the Strand Campus on December /2 and 13 1985; its subject naturally was muscular contraction Approximately 120 people attended the meeting, mostly British biophysicists but with some European colleagues. The speakers came from Britain, urope and orth America and were leaders in the field.

The meeting started with two review lectures which served to show how the field has developed over the last twenty-five years. Then, the main proteins had been identified but their structural organisation was unknown. ow as later speakers demonstrated, the challenge is to look at fine detail of these structures using x-ray crystallography.

The second day was devoted to the protein-protein interaction which leads to muscle contraction, the so-called cro sbridge mechanism. The peakers de cri bed results from a whole battery of biophysica techniques which have been brought to bear on the problem, such as electron pin resonance, nuclear magnetic r~sonance and x-ray diffraction. Very substantial advances have been made over the last 2S years but still details of the force generating process remain elusive.

THE GREEK OVEL AD 1 - 1985 An International Symposium at King's College London (KQC) From Monday 24 - Wednesday 26 March the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies will be holding a symposium on the Greek ovel ADl - 1985. The symposium aims to provide, for tre first time in this country, a forum for discussion of Modern Greek literature in its historical and comparative context. With Greece now a full member of the European Community and Modern Greek one of its official languages, there is an obvious need for wider understanding of Greek culture and the achievements of its literature.

The co t of registration for the full sympo ium will be £5.00 (£2.50 for members and recent graduates of the College and for all students); otherwise a daily rate of £2.00 (£ 1.00 for students etc) will apply.

The sadness felt by the Department of French at the news of the death of John Cocking will be shared by many who knew him during his long career at King's. John Martin Cocking came to King's College as a student in 1932 and returned as an Assistant Lecturer in 1939· he was appointed to a Lectureship in 1946 after war service in the Intelligence Corps, and to the Chair in French Language and Literature in 1952. He hec;ame a Fellow of the College in 1965 and held the Chair with distinction until he retired in 1975, when he became Emeritus Professor. His contributions to scholarship in the field of modern French literature and criticism all show his distincively philosophical turn of mind, and his skill in UnT avelling the complex patterns of thought and imagery in which modern writers have ~pres~d their ideas; his book on Proust remains a model of its kind.

John Cocking was a man of absolute integrity and his resolute adherence to principle made him a respected chairman of College and University committees, and a colleague on whom one could depend for firm decision and unswerving action.

He cared enormously for the maintenance of intellectual standards, and students who initially found him formidable learned to respect and admire him. His colleagues in the Department of French hope to be able to edit and prepare for publication the book on which he was working at the time of his death, a history of the concept of the imagination of which a glimpse was afforded in the public lecture which he gave at King's in February 1983. It would be the best memorial one could devise for a man who loved literature and ideas.

LI BRARY NEWS LIBRARY SPACE CRITICAL Both the Council and Academic Board have recently received a report from the Librarian which highlights an acute accommodation problem for library services on the Strand site. The Library, along with all other departments, has had many problems to face in past months but accommodation is now worryingly pressing. 'Even allowing for the College's grave accommodation difficulties at the Strand, the state of the Library there now is such as to interfere with the academic weal of the College'. The Buildings Committee have been alerted to the urgency of this and the Council and Academic Board have indicated their full appreciation of the difficulties the library now faces.

GOLDSMITHS' LIBRARY APPEAL Gold mith ' College has launched an appeal to raise£lm as its contribution to the co t of a new Library building.

The Department of Education and Science ha agreed to a capital project to finance a new building to replace the present cramped premi es on condition that the College raises approximately one third of the total cost of building <I1d conversion works. Some £335,000 has already been secured in donations from charitable foundations and the sale of some College properties.

The new Library building will provide accommodation for 200,000 volumes on open access.

Some 800 m;w ORS Awards will be offered on a competitive basis to overseas postgraduate students of outstanding merit and research potential. Each award will cover the difference between the tuition fee for home postgraduate student and the 'full-cost' fee chargeable to an over eas postgraduate student.

Awardholders will be overseas graduate students, who, in the Session 1986-87 are commencing full-time study, as registered re earch students for a higher degree or are already undertaking such a course and do not have an ORS Award.

They must be liable to pay tuition fees at the 'full-cost' rate for overseas students.

In recent time the introduction of the Data Protection Act and its implications for the College have featured as agenda item for both the Standing Committee and the Academic Board.

Simultaneou Jy, the Academic Council of the niversity considered the issue, particularly in respect of the release of examination marks. Hitherto it had been the policy of the Academic Council that examination marks were confi dential and should not be released to students. This approach run con trary to the conditions of the Data Protection Act and a new policy wa formulated.

The Data Protection Act is only concerned with information held on computer files for computer read also word processor, microcomputer, personal computer and so on. However, the Academic Council took the view that all examination mark, irre pective of whether they were held on a computer file, hould be relea ed to students. This information would be automatically ent to the tudent rather than supplied on reque 1. It wa uggested by the Academic Council that a 'general factor' be introduced which could be used by Examiner at their di cretion in order to compensate for variation in assessment.

The Academic Council sought the view of School, Boards of Studies and Academic Advisory Boards.

Within the College the views of the Chairmen of the College-based Boards of Examiners and Faculties were requested and their views were collated and presented to the Academic Board.

I In responding to the Academic Council the following point were raised: - the propo als of the Academic Council attracted minority support - of the majority who did not upport the proposals there was a number who would support the relea e of examination marks on request - that if examination marks are released they should only be the final mark for each cour e, no greater details should be given - there wa general opposition to the introduction of the 'general factor' although one faculty thought it might be useful for determining honours classifications - the concern over the way in which the release of post-graduate marks might be released Under the provisions of the Act the computerised data held within the College has to be registered with the Data Protection Registrar. In preparing the College's submission, Alistair Pettigrew, the Deputy Academic Registrar, is concentrating upon student-based data whilst Peter Gilbert, Assistant Secretary (General) has been designated as the College's Data Protection Officer.

SE ATE OPE S ITS DOORS College Information Officers were welcomed to the February meeting of the University Senate. The Vice-Chancellor hopes to increa e communication of Senate proceedings and Information Officers have been invited in on a trial basis for the remainder of the session.

Other than a presentation from icola Ros i, President of ULU, highlighting the serious difficulties students face following government action on housing and welfare benefits along ide a mere rise in grant of 2%, the business of the meeting consisted of formal presentation of committee reports and an oral statement by the ViceChancellor.

Lord Flowers drew particular attention to the problems facing students. A JPC Working Group on Student Accommodation, chaired by Professor Dorothy Wedderburn, produced an interim report calling for a radical review of student grants for 19 6/87. This had been completed before government plans had been announced and the JPC had asked the Group to take these new factors into account in preparing their final report: a report which should help the University make stronger and more effective representations to Government on this vital matter.

In presenting to Senate the JPC's 'crisp' response to the Green Paper, Lord Flowers also made mention of the CVCP's 'Future of the Universities' response, other university responses, the UGC's response and other supportive documents such as that of the CBI. Although vital, these responses were clearly not enough by themselves and he urged universities to continue to

energetically press their case, collectively and individually, by all means possible.

He thanked all tho e involved in the "extremely exacting, arduou and timecon uming task" of preparing the individual and federal responses to the UGC on Planning' for the Late 1980s'. The e had all been duly submitted. In a reference to J arratt, he stated the hope that school were making good progress with their review and improvements as it was important to demonstrate to the Government and to the public at large the effective way in which the University carries out its business. The UGC have asked universities to report initiatives by this autumn.

Ending on a note of good news, Lord Flowers expres ed warm appreciation to the British Academy for their upport of the humanities and social sciences, demonstrated in their recent announcement of 25 non-renewable Fellow hips tenable for three years, in each nf the three academic year 1986/9. These are intended to help ou tstanding young scholars develop their research and obtain formal teaching experience. Schools have been invited to comment on the detailed implementation of the scheme, directly to the Academy.

Senate had particular rea on to be appreciative of the British Academy initiative as it had been motivated by the BA President, previous Vice-Chancellor of the Universi ty.

The new higher rate will apply to projects submitted after 31 January 1986 and to any project carried forward. The precise level of next year's minimum contribution will depend on the level of inflation and will be announced later.

In order to make it easier for CASE re earch tudentships to be taken up the clo ing date for the nomination of tudents to work on approved CASE projects has now been abolished. Students may now be nominated for any approved award as long as it remains available for take-up.

HARTLEY WORKING PARTY STILL TO FINALLY REPORT The Hartley Working Party discussing the future of Pharmacy and Nursing Studies has presented an incomplete report to the University Joint Planning Committee.

This· Report recommended that Nursing Studies be retained within KQC but that Pharmacy should be transferred. The reasons put forward to support the latter appear luke-warm somewhat insubstantiated by intellectually convincing argument and could show a certain lack of resolve on behalf of the Working Party. This impression is strengthened by the inclusion of a 5 th recommendation which says if the foregoing recommendations were unacceptable the University may wish to indicate to the UG that there is no use for the Tooting space. A final, complete Report is now expected very soon and should be widely circulated. I t will be presented to the Joint Planning Committee in March, as will the response to it from King's and from St Goorge's.

SERC COOPERATIVE AWARDS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING The Science and 'Engineering Research Council has decided to increase the present level of minimum contribution by

Until these are available reports may be submitted by using exi ting forms (if any) or forwarding a written account, or telephoning or visiting the Personnel Office.

The Commi ion is able to put potentlal partner in contact with each other, if required.

While there have been ome adminIstrative delays affecting contracts and payments which have caused concern to academic institutions, the consen u eems to be that ESPRIT has been succe sful in promoting trans-European cooperation between industry, universities and research institute.

A report by the Commis ion has recommended that in future ESPRIT's emphasis should lie within three main areas of activity: micro-electronics, software and applications, while about ten per cent of the total funding could be used for more imaginative projects, possibly to be undertaken by academic institutions.

CIVIL E GINEERI G TALKS CO TINUE An interim report from Professor Sutherland and Sir J ames Menter concludes that there is little common ground between the King's and Queen Mary College Departments. Their advice to the University, that they do not see a way ahead for any advantageous collaboration, is upported by the external advisers involved in the discussions. Queen Mary College is continuing to consider the issues and we are now in discussion with University Coll~ge, looking into the points of contact which may exist here. This discussion could be the basis of a further report to the niversity.
