We said then it was 'a kind of madness for the Government to be planning a destructive onslaught on the universities'. Five years later our view has not changed, but the gravity of our ituation most certainly has." ''The Government a ks for more and more, but think it can provide less and less without adulterating the quality of what is produced. Universities undoubtedly represent value for money as an investment in the country's future and in that of our children and grandchildren. Certainly for the money spent on them the universities of thi country are of a quality which can be matched only with difficulty anywhere in the world."

Student Award There must be an awards cheme which will encourage ,tudents to enter higher education, is chcap and imple to adminiter and will guarantee an adequate level of finance for their academic tudy. Student Union There is strong upport for student union and the framework they provide for selteducation through the intellectual, sporting, political and recreational activities that complement academic pursuits. School Curriculum The CVCP strongly supports reform of the sixth form curriculum and welcomes the start being made with AS levels. It accepts that chools must continue to provide an educational base for all children.

The main point of the Paper are as follows:

Academic Standard Universities are confident that their academic tandards are equal to the highest in the world but they al 0 accept that their procedures for maintaining and monitoring those standards should be made more public.

Student umbers Present policie are calculated to reduce the output of graduates by about 14% by the la te 1990s. Compared with its maJ or economic competitors the UK has a smaller proportion of its work force with first degrees.

Research niversities carry ou t most of the country's fundamental re earch and are increa ingly involved in its application. This research is of the greatest importance to the nation and the universities have pursued it over the years with distinction.

The economic and social recovery of the country should not be impeded by a lack of people with the intellectual and perso-

0 SMOKING DAY -

Have you thought of giving up smoking or are you a 'side-stream' smoker wishing your colleague would break the habit? Look out for the leaflets, posters and badges around the college on March 12. ow may not be your moment to give up smoking, but try to cut down and plan to give up at the end of the summer term. Most of us leave the pollution of London for a week or more for a well earned break, o leave your cigarettes in the smog this summer and return without them for the new academic year in October 1986. Let's aim to make King's the first nosmoking college in Britain. Any offers of help or suggestions for National No-Smoking Day March 12 would be much appreciated.
