expertise will underpin a high-profile series of performances, exhibitions, publications and events, including a special King’s Shakespeare Festival. Our aim is to underline the extraordinary impact Shakespeare’s writing has had not only in the theatre but across the full range of artistic forms.
King’s is one of the world’s leading centres of research in the Arts and Humanities, situated at the heart of a city with a globally important concentration of Arts and Humanities scholars.
Europeanness on film King’s alumnae Dr Alissa Timoshkina, Dr Mariana Liz and Dr Mary Harrod published the first book to explore ‘Europeanness’ in cinema. It aims to identify the distinctive character of European cinema, both in films and as a critical concept, asking: what place does European cinema have in an increasingly globalised world? The idea for the book came out of a conference organised at King’s in 2010, which was sponsored by the King’s Roberts Fund, the Department of Film Studies and the University Association for European Studies.
On Her Majesty’s Service Scholars from across the faculty (including research students) are working on a project with the Royal Archives to digitise the papers of King George III and other Hanoverian monarchs, only a small fraction of which have previously been published. Launched by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in April 2015, this ground-breaking work will shed much new light on Georgian Britain, its monarchy and empire during a time of profound cultural, political, economic and social change.
We have great strengths in all our disciplines, including relatively new fields such as Digital Humanities and Culture, Media and Creative Industries. This impressive diversity is the basis of a distinctively rich and intellectually stimulating environment for research of the very highest quality and significance. Our research engages with questions of fundamental importance to our understanding of the past, present and future. It helps us make sense of what it means, and has meant, to be human. With over 450 students we are home to one of the largest populations of postgraduate research students in the country and aim to make a difference through our research. We seek to engage with key questions beyond the walls of the university, building partnerships with cultural organisations, businesses and charities to share our knowledge. Our expertise helps inform and shape policy in the UK and beyond. We also reach out to the public through talks, film screenings and other events, including our own Arts & Humanities Festival. The impact of the faculty’s research in the wider world was acknowledged in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2014), which judged 99 per cent of our research to have had an outstanding (4*) or very significant (3*) impact. This is reflected in our strong profile for research impact with 50 per cent of our activity rated as having outstanding impact (4*) and 43 per cent as having very considerable impact (3*) in terms of reach and significance.
Dental Institute awarded Athena Swan Charter Silver Award King’s College London Dental Institute has been awarded the Athena SWAN Charter silver award in 2015. Dr Oliver Johnson, King’s MBBS alumnus and Director of the King’s Sierra Leone Partnership, has been honoured with an OBE for his services in the fight against Ebola. He was also named one of London’s 1,000 most Influential people by the Evening Standard. Made up in large part by volunteers, the team was originally in Sierra Leone to help build and strengthen the local health system, but has played a vital role in responding to Ebola since the virus first reached the country in May 2014. They won a Guardian University Award in 2015 for their role at the centre of the ongoing Ebola response in west Africa.

Groundbreaking research to prevent peanut allergy A study led by Professor Gideon Lack and published in the New England Journal of Medicine was the first to show that consumption is an effective strategy to prevent food allergy, contradicting previous recommendations. For many years, public health guidelines, paediatricians and allergists have recommended avoiding foods in infants’ diet that cause allergies such as peanuts. However, new evidence from Professor Lack’s LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) study shows that the majority of infants at high risk of developing peanut allergy are protected from peanut allergy at age five years if they eat peanuts frequently, starting within the first 11 months of life. With incidence of food allergy rising dramatically in recent decades, this research is more vital than ever.
Outstanding REF 2014 results We are delighted with our results from the last Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2014). The faculty performed strongly, with 91.8 per cent of research 4* (world-leading) or 3* (internationally excellent), consolidating our position at the forefront of life sciences and medicine research. Clinical Medicine was placed first in the UK in terms of the proportion of our overall submission that was ranked 4* or 3* and our subjects allied to Medicine: Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences and Women’s Health were ranked second in the UK in terms of research power.

Supporting NHS staff at work: Could Schwartz Centre Rounds® hold the key to a happier, healthier workforce and enhance compassionate care? Professor Jill Maben is leading a team of researchers from King’s College London, Sheffield University and the King’s Fund to conduct a national evaluation of Schwartz Centre Rounds® (known as ‘Schwartz Rounds’ or ‘Rounds’). Developed in the US, Rounds are a multidisciplinary forum where staff from across healthcare settings regularly come together to discuss the non-clinical aspects of caring for patients, such as the psychological, emotional and social challenges associated with their work. Rounds are currently running in 300 healthcare organisations in the US, and over 100 in the UK, including acute hospitals, hospices, mental and community health trusts. This national study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Services and Delivery Research Programme (NIHR HS&DR), aims to uncover to what extent participation in Rounds affects staff wellbeing at work, improves relationships between staff and patients, and aids the provision of compassionate care in the UK.

Professor Debra Bick (centre) with colleagues from the Hospital Municipal Maternidade in Rio de Janeiro who attended a PEARLS training day
A European team of researchers, including Dr Jo Armes from the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, are undertaking a programme of research called eSMART (Electronic Symptom Management using ASyMS Remote Technology). eSMART is funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme. The project uses mobile phone technology to monitor patients remotely who are undergoing chemotherapy to treat breast, bowel and blood cancers, and to allow them to report side-effects from their chemotherapy. The information is sent securely to a computer, which assesses their symptoms and triggers alerts to doctors or nurses within minutes if the patient requires a specialist intervention, while also providing patients with real-time information and advice on how to manage their symptoms at home, without the need to travel to hospital. Researchers believe that using ASyMS will reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy and help to identify and treat those that are life-threatening much quicker than current care systems. In addition, it is anticipated that the use of ASyMS will significantly reduce healthcare costs.

Improving outcomes of birthrelated perineal trauma Thousands of women giving birth each year in the UK sustain trauma to their perineal body, either spontaneously or following an episiotomy. A research team, co-led by Professor Debra Bick, conducted the largest study to date, the PEARLS study, which recruited over 3,000 women across the UK, to see if use of evidencebased practice to manage perineal trauma by midwives and obstetricians could be improved. Some maternal health outcomes were improved and use of evidence-based practice increased. The PEARLS training materials are now available online to all members of the Royal College of Midwives and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The PEARLS team continues to train clinicians in the UK and internationally, most recently in Brazil and Australia.

Transforming the nature-nurture zeitgeist The Twins Early Development Study (TEDS), based at King’s IoPPN, has celebrated 20 years of ground-breaking scientific discovery. Studying 20,700 twins and their families over 20 years, the study has transformed thoughts about genetics and environmental influences on diverse areas of behavioural development, unpicking the complex relationship between nature and nurture. To date, more than 300 research papers have been published using TEDS data, in collaboration with over 50 institutions worldwide.

New study sheds light on development of anxiety within families Childhood trauma gets under the skin Research published by the IoPPN and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), has discovered that longterm changes in immune function caused by childhood trauma could explain increased vulnerability to a range of health problems in later life. The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, found heightened inflammation across three blood biomarkers in adults who had been victims of childhood trauma. High levels of inflammation can lead to serious and potentially lifethreatening conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease as well as the onset of psychiatric disorders.
According to new research from the IoPPN, living together could be the main source of similarity for anxiety between family members, over and above genetic links between them. The study is the first of its kind to explore the role of genes versus environment on familial patterns of anxiety and in particular how anxiety is passed from parents to adolescent offspring. The findings give hope to parents with anxiety disorders that in spite of genetic influences on the condition, it will not necessarily afflict their children and could be prevented by promoting resilience.

Revealed – the secret lives of your clothes Dr Andrew Brooks, Lecturer in Development Geography, has exposed the dark underbelly of the clothing industry and the life-cycle of garments, shining a spotlight on the profits charities make from exporting and selling clothing donations to developing countries. Dr Brooks’ book, Clothing Poverty: The Hidden World of Fast Fashion and Second-hand Clothes, (Zed Books, 2015) explores the hidden cycle of clothes and uncovers how ‘fastfashion’ retailers and international charities are involved in crosscontinent commodity chains, which perpetuate poverty.
A recent report into whether London has adapted to the needs of an ageing population emphasises the many different social, cultural, environmental and health-related issues that still need to be addressed before the city can be called ‘age friendly’. Co-authors Professor Anthea Tinker and Dr Jay Ginn, Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine, highlight that local authorities need sufficient resources to maintain local services and facilities, essential in supporting older people’s health, safety, social inclusion and wider needs.

Professor Olonisakin to review UN peacebuilding White House summit on violent extremism Professor Peter Neumann, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King’s, was called to appear on the panel for a special White House summit on violent extremism in early 2015. Following the ICSR’s research, which involved speaking to nearly 100 fighters and uncovering their many different backgrounds and motivations, Professor Neumann warned that Western countries should prepare themselves for different challenges. He said that effective measures were needed to tackle the problem and stated that integration for disaffected young people needed addressing.
Professor ‘Funmi Olonisakin, the founding Director of the African Leadership Centre at King’s, has been appointed to the United Nations Advisory Group of Experts – which will be conducting a review of peacebuilding architecture – by the organisation’s Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon. VOICE OF THE STUDENT ‘I found the programme very helpful for improving my academic English, in particular learning to write postgraduate essays. I also got used to participating in lectures at higher academic level and improved my listening skills. The course gives you the opportunity to get to know the UK academic system too, which in my case, was very different to my home country. By the time I finished, I felt much more confident and ready to start my master’s degree.’ Nurdan International Pre-master’s Programme, now studying Mental Health Studies (MSc)
VOICE OF THE STUDENT ‘I strongly recommend these preparation programmes to international students, even if you already meet the English language score for your main course. Postgraduate-level writing skills are different from the IELTS essay. You need academic analysis to be able to explain your opinions objectively, and the Pre-sessional will help you develop these skills in an efficient way. In fact, I still go back to the materials of the course when I am writing my master’s essays!’ Setsuko Pre-sessional Programme, now studying Conflict, Security & Development (MA)

THE ENTHUSIAST ‘I became interested in the history of war because I am of a generation whose parents served in World War II. My father, uncle and all my friends’ fathers served in the war and they never talked about it. It was this mysterious world that I was not allowed to enter. I developed a really strong interest in trying to find out what they experienced. This led me to study military history. I want to record what these people did, the sacrifices they made and what they went through so that it’s not forgotten. I graduated from my last degree 40 years ago. The first advice I would give to other mature learners is don’t be frightened. You can do this and coming back is easier than you’d think. King’s is so welcoming to mature students and my professors were always available when I needed advice and guidance. If you’ve thought about returning for a degree – do it, it’s worth it!’ Ted History of War MA Watch Ted’s video here: kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 75

Philosophy
Philosophy
We cover all major areas of philosophy, with particular strengths in history of philosophy, philosophy of mind/psychology, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, ethics/ action theory, epistemology and philosophy of medicine. We capitalise on this by offering four different master’s programmes, geared equally to philosophy graduates and conversion students, and boasting an unrivalled range of optional modules in these areas and more. Supervision of our research students (whether pursuing the two-year MPhilStud or the three-year MPhil / PhD) is carefully tailored to their own individual needs. But philosophy is teamwork, making progress by working through problems together via argument and debate: so we also run special weekly seminars where postgraduate students gather to share ideas, plus numerous informal reading groups across a warm, collegial and inclusive department.

THE ACADEMIC ‘I’ve been at King’s since 1995 – I came here to study and I never left! Before coming to King’s, I qualified as a dentist and worked in general practice and community dental service for about four years. What got me interested in the Conservative Dentistry MSc was the chance to actually build a patient’s smile. I’m now Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Dental Institute. It’s lovely to be able to treat patients, teach students and do the research that I’m really interested in at the same time. One thing that King’s has taught me is the idea of life-long learning. It doesn’t stop. You can always carry on learning in order to get to the point where you really do enjoy what you are doing, at the same time as being really good at it.’ Rebecca Conservative Dentistry (MSc) Dental Oral Science (PhD) Watch Rebecca’s video here: kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 85

THE CAREER BUILDER ‘I’m from France, so learning about another legal system in another country was very interesting and a real challenge in the beginning. I’m proud to have coped with it and to now be using it every day in the office. Addressing fictitious disputes for exam papers as a student is quite a different experience to dealing with actual cases, but they prepared me well for practising law in the real world. I’ve found it challenging and intellectually stimulating, especially in my field of securitisation. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my time at King’s was gathering with my fellow students in a café after our lectures, ordering a pot of tea and then exchanging our thoughts and ideas. Studying in central London, learning from topquality teachers, making great friendships and achieving your goals is an experience I would wish for anyone.’ Elise International Financial Law LLM Watch Elise’s video here kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 92

THE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL ‘I had been working for several years before I came to King’s, but postgraduate study has always been one of my goals. I’m a software engineer for a company called Haemonetics, and worked part time throughout my full-time Computing & Security MSc course at King’s. It wasn’t easy, but I enjoyed being back in academia and having the chance to do research. Security is something that is always important within any kind of information system. The knowledge I gained during my MSc will always be useful to me, both in my current job and in the future when I may look for a role that’s more involved in the area of security. At Haemonetics, I now work on software that manages the distribution of blood within NHS hospitals. We make sure that the right blood gets to the right people at the right time for transfusions.’ Ben Computing and Security MSc Watch Ben’s video here: kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 109

THE CAREER CHANGER ‘While studying my undergraduate degree in media technology, which involved working in TV and radio studios, I chose to volunteer with St John Ambulance in my spare time. I became interested in medicine and helping people, and made the decision to study nursing at King’s before I finished my first degree. While I was studying at King’s, I joined the Territorial Army and spent three months working at a hospital in Camp Bastian, Afghanistan. It was a unique experience and made me realise that I didn’t want to be a ward nurse. While I was in Afghanistan, I applied for my current job at King’s College Hospital working in the Emergency Department. After my tour, I progressed to Senior Staff Nurse and now do a job share where I’m 50 per cent clinical and 50 per cent research nurse. Studying nursing at King’s opens up a lot of opportunities and has helped guide my career choices and progression.’ Graeme Accelerated diploma of higher education in Adult Nursing (equivalent to PG Dip) Watch Graeme’s video here: kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 115

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, the department is world-renowned for its progressive research in the area of child psychiatry, and our programmes are taught by leading academics in the field. Children live through multiple periods of critical, sometimes chaotic, development affecting the way they think, feel and perceive. Our goal is to understand in principle how childhood disorders are distinct from their adult equivalents. We then apply those principles to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. We provide the essential link between state-ofthe-art science and its translation into clinical services, strengthened by our pivotal role within King’s Health Partners, and our staff’s connections with the National Specialist teams based at the Maudsley Hospital. The Department is also home to the National Academy of Parenting Research.

Such is the complexity of the brain’s construction that neurobiologists are still far from a complete structural and functional understanding of its basic operations, let alone even beginning to understand the nature of the higher functions – such as thought and consciousness – of which possibly only the human brain is capable. It is our goal to further the understanding of this structure through our current research programmes: • Building brains: animal models and tissue engineering • Assembly and Plasticity of Neural Circuits • Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

VOICE OF THE ACADEMIC ‘General Robert E. Lee remarked, “it is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it”. His observation captured the trauma and the emotional highs of battle, two key elements of our research in the field of military psychology. How people prepare for conflict, cope during periods of intense stress and manage the return to peacetime life frame much of our study of soldiers and civilians. Incorporating findings into the core teaching material for the MSc in War and Psychiatry has significant value; it exposes our ideas to critical scrutiny and also gives us an opportunity to influence a new generation of scholars and practitioners.’ Professor Edgar Jones Programme Leader for MSc in War and Psychiatry

THE SPECIALIST ‘I became interested in poverty and inequality after getting involved in politics during my undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences. There was no Labour Society at my university so I set one up. I found that poverty was political, and after graduating I wanted to focus on these issues in more detail. I got a few offers but chose King’s when one of the co-directors of the new International Development Institute told me about all the specialist staff they were hiring. The academic standing of the people here is second to none. I really enjoyed studying here at King’s. Since finishing the master’s I’ve interviewed some former Prime Ministers and Secretaries of State for a video aimed at keeping international development at the top of the agenda. I’m now about to start a PhD here at King’s as I think this will help me become a policy advisor on development issues.’ Mann Emerging Economies & International Development MSc Watch Mann’s video here: kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/which-postgrad.aspx #whichpostgrad 146

Social Science, Health & Medicine
Social Science, Health & Medicine Illness is a human experience, shaped by social, political and economic conditions, by cultural beliefs and values, and by systems of language and meaning. From research to policy and practice, inequalities in medicine and health are increasingly global matters, with profound effects on individual human lives and on social and political relations worldwide. Social Science, Health & Medicine is a unique interdisciplinary department founded in 2012. By bringing together social scientists, biomedical researchers and clinicians, King’s explores the complex social determinants of health, illness and ageing, and the ways in which advances in biomedicine and biotechnology are changing expectations about life, health and the nature of medical practice. Our internationally recognised expertise is utilised by myriad organisations and we will equip you with the skills required for a wide range of careers in the health services; in government and NGOs; and in the commercial medical and health sectors.

University Policy
University Policy University statement on equality and diversity Key principles King’s College London recognises that equality of opportunity and the recognition and promotion of diversity are integral to its academic and economic strengths. The following principles apply in respect of the university’s commitment to equality and diversity: • To provide and advance equality of opportunity in all areas of its work and activity • To recognise and develop the diversity of skills and talent within its current and potential community • To ensure that all university members and prospective members are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential without receiving any unjustified discrimination or unfavourable treatment because of a protected characteristic[1] • To provide and promote a positive working, learning and social environment which is free from prejudice, discrimination and any form of harassment, bullying or victimisation • To foster good relations between individuals from different groups and tackle prejudice and promote understanding. [1] A protected characteristic includes age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation. Management responsibility for equality and diversity resides within the Equality & Diversity Unit in the Directorate of Student & Education Support. The Disability Advisory Service provides information, advice and guidance on possible support initiatives to students and staff of the university. The university recognises that all of its members have a duty to support and commit to its equality and diversity principles to ensure that these are embedded within university policies, procedures and practices.

Therefore all students who start a course in 2016 will study for a King’s College London degree. Your degree certificate will record that your degree is awarded by King’s and that the College is a member of the University of London. The enactment of this change in awarding authority does not affect the degree programme curricula, the teachers or the methods of teaching, the modes of assessment or the high quality of the academic and associated support provision.

Changes to courses and changes to guide information The following message contains some very important information. Please read it before you use this guide. This guide was printed in the summer of 2015. It contains information on the postgraduate courses that King’s College London (“King’s”) intends to run for students who are planning to start university in the autumn of 2016. King’s has made every effort to ensure that the information provided is both helpful and accurate as at the date of publication. However, some changes, for example to courses, facilities or fees may become necessary due to legitimate staffing, financial, regulatory and academic reasons.
