UK USA
WELCOME With over 30 years’ experience of running summer schools for young people from all over the world, Kings has given thousands of students a summer they’ll never forget. In 2016, we were delighted to welcome students from more than 55 different countries. To give our students the best possible experience, we make sure all our summer centres are in ideal locations, with excellent facilities and highly-motivated staff. In 2017 our students will be able to choose from eight Residential Summer Centres and four city-based Vacation Extra centres — including our new Brighton location.
The variety and flexibility of our courses allow us to cater for a host of different needs and interests, and in 2017 we will be adding to our programme range with an American University Taster Program in New York. This exciting new course will give our students the opportunity to enjoy lectures on areas of US education and culture, and to visit some of the world’s most famous universities. We look forward to another great summer ahead. Mary Doody Director of Kings Summer
We pride ourselves on offering plenty of individual support and attention, and ensure that each child’s safety and well-being are always our top priorities.

LESSONS AND LEARNING Kings Summer offers young learners and teenagers an excellent opportunity to use, practise and improve their English skills in a fun learning environment.
Levels All students are tested on the first day of their stay to determine their level — both written and oral testing takes place to determine the correct class for each student. Each class has a maximum of 15 students. Students are placed in one of six levels, from Beginner to Advanced. The American University Taster Program and Intensive Academic Programs in Bath and Oxford require a minimum intermediate level of English so students who wish to attend these courses will be required to do a pre-arrival test.
Excursion lessons Excursion lessons have been programmed into the timetable at our residential centres. The excursion lesson is a chance for students to learn more about the destinations on offer that week. The teachers often do follow-up activities in class about the destinations visited.
Coursebooks and project lessons Students are given coursebooks on a loan basis. These have been carefully selected to help enhance learning, develop linguistic skills and improve students’ confidence in listening and speaking. Students also complete a number of interactive projects during their stay to allow them to practise their language more freely.
Portfolio of work/report/ certificate As students progress through the course, they will be adding to a portfolio of work which they can take home and show their parents. Students will receive an end-ofcourse report on their academic studies and a certificate of attendance. 12
OUR ACTIVITIES At Kings, we know it’s important that every day is busy, fun-packed and different. For this reason, we complement lessons with a vast range of activities, ensuring that there is something new and exciting to enjoy every single day.
Daytime activities Each centre offers a variety of structured and supervised daytime activities. These have been specifically designed to make the most of the facilities and surroundings at each location. Students can play beach volleyball in Malibu, develop their photography skills at Bath, enjoy a refreshing swim at Farringtons — all centres have lots to offer. Specific courses have been designed for each centre, more information about which can be found on our website. Students at our Bath and Cheltenham Residential Summer Centres can also select specialist ‘add on’ sessions (supplement applies), which include tennis, horse riding, film craft, and performing arts.
Evening activities In all of the Residential Summer Centres, social activities are arranged each evening to encourage fun, friendship and English practice. Students usually have one main activity each evening, followed by some supervised ‘chill out’ time at the end of the day. Evening activities include quiz nights, discos and talent shows. Our Vacation Extra Centres offer 3 – 4 evening activities per week.
13
OUR EXCURSIONS We have carefully planned excursions to local areas of interest that we feel will best enhance each student's experience. We aim to offer a mix of cultural and historical visits as well as some shopping trips and visits to entertainment venues. Our centre-specific factsheets give full details of all the excursions we offer. See kingssummer.com. For information on additional sightseeing trips available with our courses, please see page 15.
US centers Our US Summer Course includes three full-day excursions each week to make the most of the iconic cities in which we are located. Destinations include famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building and museums such as the Natural History Museum, theme parks including Six Flags and Universal Studios, and famous beaches including Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach. Our University Taster Program in New York offers a weekly visit to a leading US university, in addition to two full-day excursions.
UK centres In the UK every centre offers both full-day and half-day excursions which allow students to explore some of the most famous cities in the country, including London, Brighton, Oxford, Bath, Portsmouth and Stratford-upon-Avon. Students at our Central London location have daily visits into London as well as full-day excursions at the weekend. Please see our location pages for specific excursion details.
14
ADDITIONAL SIGHTSEEING Students in Bath (Downside) and Cheltenham in the UK, and New York and Malibu in the US can get even more out of their summer with additional trips to popular tourist destinations nearby. Return transport, accommodation and all meals are included.
Bath and Cheltenham Our students in Bath (Downside) and Cheltenham can book a 2-day sightseeing trip to London, taking in well-known attractions such as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and the London Dungeons.
New York

Students in New York can take advantage of a 2 – 3 day trip to Boston where they’ll visit Harvard, MIT, the Skywalk Observatory and follow the famous Freedom trail.

Polan d
With over 55 different countries represented each year, our students share great times with friends from all over the world. This means they will be able to experience other cultures while they are in the UK or USA. It also means that their language skills will improve as they will need to communicate with their new friends through the shared use of English.

STUDENT CARE Student welfare and safety are always our top priorities at Kings Summer. We understand and acknowledge the trust that is put in us, and take our responsibility very seriously.
Student Care measures To ensure students are safe at all times we have put the following measures into place: All lessons and activities are compulsory. At our Vacation Extra centres the homestay providers and residence supervisors are responsible for students at their accommodation, and ensure that curfews are followed every night. In the Residential Summer Centres House Parents or Night Supervisors monitor the halls of residence throughout the night time period. Teachers take attendance registers at the start of every lesson and registers are taken on activities and excursions. There is a designated Welfare Manager at each of our locations. Staff to student ratios are high.
Individual students at the Residential Summer Centres are allocated a staff member to act as their guardian during their stay. They will have a daily meeting throughout their stay. Students are all issued with ID cards and wristbands with emergency contact information. There are designated staff with first aid training at each centre. We have strong recruitment systems, and staff are hired subject to suitable references and background checks A 24-hour emergency phone service for students, staff and parents is in place. We have a regularly reviewed child safeguarding policy. Child safeguarding forms an integral part of staff training.
Nourishing meals
Bank service
With a very full and active programme we know how important it is for students to eat nutritious food. All meals will be provided for students, either at the school, at a local dining venue, or by their homestay host. On full-day excursions, packed meals will be provided. We also cater for students with special dietary requirements.
Kings Summer offers a student bank service so that students can feel safe in knowing their money, passport and travel documents are kept in a safe place. This service allows us to help the students manage their money, and also reduce the likelihood of them losing it.
Transfers
Insurance
All students attending our programmes must book a Kings arrival/departure transfer unless travelling with a group leader or a responsible adult.
We’ve developed an excellent value insurance policy specially designed for international students, in conjunction with Guard.Me in the USA and Endsleigh Insurance in the UK. The insurance policy gives a very high level of cover and will protect students in the case of an accident or emergency. Students should complete the insurance form to make sure they are fully protected. Students attending courses in the USA will automatically be enrolled on the Kings policy unless proof of alternative insurance is provided. For full details visit: kingssummer.com
Students who book this service will have a meet-and-greet service on arrival (a nominated driver or a Kings member of staff) and will be taken directly to their centre. Equally, on departure all individual students will be checked in by Kings staff or a driver. Groups are normally checked in by their group leader. We also welcome students who have booked an Unaccompanied Minor service.
