A TARGETED APPROACH TO LEARNING
Every student is different. At Kings, we are able, through use of the CAT 4 test, to learn accurately and immediately what each student’s learning style is. By modifying our teaching styles for each student in the class, we ensure they are supported to achieve their maximum, right from day one.
The CAT 4 test
The test is not based on any prior knowledge and so it is suitable for all our students, including those from other countries who all have different educational careers and assessments thus far.
Students take the test in the schools within the first two weeks of their arrival at Kings. Students, and their teachers, are given a report showing their results and highlighting where their weaknesses and strengths are: the idea is to use this as a basis for study plans for the years ahead.
Adding value At Kings, the CAT 4 assessments enable us not only to help every student achieve more than they thought possible, but to do so in a way that we can measure. The test enables us to compare a student’s CAT 4 predicted grade with the actual result that they achieve, and in 2018, 39% of A-level students exceeded their predictions by either 2 or 3 grades.
Our small class sizes are designed specifically to allow for personalised learning, and our teachers are able to adjust the way they teach and support each individual student according to what their report highlights — both in terms of learning style and academic requirements.

A-LEVELS AT KINGS A TARGETED APPROACH TO LEARNING
The CAT 4 test is used by over 50% of UK secondary schools and is designed to help them understand pupils’ developed abilities, likely academic potential and learning preferences. It does this by assessing a pupil’s ability to reason with and manipulate different types of material through a series of Verbal, Non-verbal, Quantitative and Spatial Reasoning tasks.

A-LEVELS THE GOLD STANDARD
A-levels are widely regarded as the ‘Gold Standard’ qualification for top universities in Britain, and the rest of the world, and evidence of the most demanding and rigorous intellectual training. The very best universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, only accept students with outstanding A-level grades.

A-level format
The UK A-level system offers students the flexibility to choose which combination of subjects they would like to study in preparation for higher education. A-levels are unique in providing unrivalled depth of study in a few specialist subjects. After two years, you will have developed the kind of subject knowledge that is often only acquired during the first year at university in many other countries.
A-levels are generally completed over 2 academic years and, following the recent reforms, all A-level exams now take place at the end of Year 2, with no marks from AS-levels contributing to the overall final grade. Whilst students can still take an exam at the end of the first AS year, this is no longer essential. The subject content in an AS qualification is the same as the content in the first year of an A level, so students need not decide if they wish to take an AS qualification at the beginning of the course. Kings can help with this decision along the way. The reforms also mean that there is less coursework and fewer practical assessments within A-levels — the main result for each subject is based on end-of-course exams.

Course structure At Kings, there are six components to the A-level course: 4. Academic Enrichment programme
Depending on each student’s future degree course and ability, we will agree a personal study programme, choosing from three to four subjects.
Students are also exposed to a variety of topics, including PSHE, Creative Arts and PE, as part of the Academic Enrichment programme.

Students have classes in Academic language, communication and study skills. These will support both their general and subject-specific learning.
Students have practice exams every week to ensure that they learn the disciplines of working concisely, accurately and to precise time limits. These also give teachers valuable information about students’ progress so they can make sure each lesson is relevant to their exact needs.
3. IELTS preparation At the same time, they will develop specific skills to enable them to pass the IELTS exam to the level required for university entry.

Extended A-level The Extended A-level is for students with lower language levels who want to follow a main A-level course. It consists of 1 – 4 terms of intensive language tuition and some academic subject classes plus the 6 terms of A-level programme.

IELTS preparation There is a focus on English language development. This includes preparation for the IELTS exam so that you reach a minimum of IELTS 5.5 for progression to the main A-level course. Academic English development You will also develop specific language skills relevant to your academic subjects, for example English for Mathematics and English for Science. Subject enrichment classes Between one and four double sessions per week are devoted to subject enrichment classes. There are four broad subject areas: zz Humanities: Topics are related to Human Geography, Politics and History. zz Business and Enterprise: Topics are related to theories and practice in business. zz Scientific Investigation: Topics based around Biology, Physics and Chemistry using practical laboratory work as the basis for scientific investigation. zz Social, Creative or Physical Education: The Kings Academic Enrichment programme is also followed each week. EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION
The Extended Project Qualification, or EPQ is it is more commonly referred to, is a standalone qualification which is often taken alongside A-levels. It is highly valued for progression to university and carries UCAS tariff points equivalent to half an A-level.
Structure and assessment The EPQ is assessed through a final project, report, dissertation and a presentation, or a physical project and a shorter written report. Both approaches result in the following four learning outcomes: zz zz zz zz

This project is independently undertaken, but supported through a range of taught academic skills and with the guidance of a dedicated tutor.

The EPQ is designed to build a range of important and transferable skills which will help students in their university studies. They can include:

Universities look favourably at this qualification, and often, being predicted a high grade in the EPQ can also lead to a university offer that requires lower A-level grades of the applicant.

The EPQ gave me the chance to study this subject, and it also really helped me to learn how to manage my time. It also helped a lot with learning how to study independently. Actually, I think it was one of the main reasons that the university accepted me — especially because I got an A* in it.

Access to the UK’s very best universities The world-renowned universities of Oxford and Cambridge are exceptionally competitive. Gaining a place requires equally exceptional credentials. At Kings we work hard to support students who have the ability and dedication to follow this path. Several of our staff are Oxbridge alumni and therefore have personal experience of the process. We work closely with the very brightest students to turn them into the kind of candidate which Oxford and Cambridge are seeking. Of course this includes having exceptional A-level grades, but it also requires so much more.
Requirements for Oxbridge entry
Helping exceptional candidates stand out
Students who are thinking about applying to Oxford or Cambridge will need to have the following.
Alongside regular individual advising sessions, Oxbridge candidates at Kings will benefit from:
1. Exceptional A-level grades Oxford will usually require a minimum of AAA A-level grades. Cambridge will usually require A*AA. Many courses may ask for more, so it is important to refer to specific course entry requirements. 2. Genuine subject enthusiasm and wider reading Students who can demonstrate a genuine passion for their subject and evidence of wider reading will have an advantage over those who have simply followed the syllabus. 3. A strong interview The Oxbridge interview is more formal and more demanding than at other universities. We advise students to expect an intellectual interrogation — but a friendly one! Candidates may be asked to show evidence of lateral thinking, personal observation, or even to talk about a subject outside their specialism. 4. Additional pre-entry tests Oxford in particular has a wide range of pre-entry tests, which vary according to degree subject.

F acilitated visits to open days: Attending university open days ensures students are as informed as possible about life at Oxbridge, and the colleges which are most suited to their field of study and way of life. 2. Specialist help from subject specific teachers: At Kings we have experienced teachers in a range of specialisms, who will help build and progress students’ passion for their chosen subject. They will also provide in-depth advice on appropriate supplementary material. 3. Numerous mock interviews: These are taken under timed conditions and at least two months before the ‘real’ one so that students can see their weaknesses and establish how to address them. 4. Access to the most competitive medical degree courses There are around 8,000 applicants for medical places each year — but only about 600 places available for international applicants. However, if you are applying for very competitive courses (such as Accounting and Finance, Art and Design, Economics, Law, Medicine, Engineering) at very competitive universities we strongly advise that your application is completed and sent by 15th January.

This includes submitting IELTS and Academic Transcripts to universities; offering assistance through clearing as well as maintaining contact with you even after you have started university. After your application is sent we provide you with support if you are preparing for an interview or may have been rejected by your first choice university. A designated staff member is responsible for replying to university queries and providing supporting documents on your behalf. After you have started university we like to remain in close contact with you through our alumni network.

1. Checking the application before submission Your UCAS Coordinator is responsible for checking that your UCAS application is free from errors before submission. Academic High School certificates and IELTS certificates must be seen by the Coordinator before qualifications are recorded as checked on UCAS. 2. Payment for UCAS application UCAS is a charity and therefore all applications must be paid for. Each student (international and EU) pays the school £23 for an application which goes to five universities. The money goes directly to UCAS. 3. Reference is written and attached to the application An academic reference is written for you by the Head of Course, a subject teacher or a UCAS Counsellor who is familiar with your progress. This ensures that each reference is authentic and personal.

At Kings, our varied enrichment programme complements your class-based learning to ensure you’ll gain the skills and knowledge which will make you attractive to your preferred universities, and beyond that, to future employers. All whilst enhancing your overall experience.
This is an extracurricular initiative undertaken by thousands of British students every year. It provides a unique opportunity to take part in new activities, expeditions and volunteering.
Student Council
There is a Student Council in place at each of our schools, which gives students the opportunity to relay student views to staff on a variety of topics. It also gives members the chance to organise in-college events, such as fundraising activities and end-of-year proms.
Kings Business Enterprise
This is a great opportunity for you to learn from visiting business experts about running your own business. You can form your own company selling real products and services, issue shares and appoint key people. The Trinity Arts Award is a nationally recognised certificate offering the opportunity to explore areas of the Arts, and to develop skills useful in your studies and university application.
EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)
The EPQ is equivalent to half an A-level. All A-level students may take an extended project as a free-standing qualification, and although the choice of topic is free, they must show that it is academically useful, either related to their current course of study, or their future career (see page 16).
Debating Society
All students at Kings have the opportunity to train and participate in debating and public speaking activities, including internal and external competitions.
