Entry requirements: Academic: 1 – 2 years of remaining of secondary school or equivalent in good standing, GPA: 2.5 or higher English: TOEFL iBT 20 or equivalent Duration: 1 – 4 term Minimum age: 16 Lessons: 25 hours per week class-based lessons including 10 hours of monitored structured study per week Maximum class size: 15 Learning outcomes: à Development of key academic skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking to an appropriate standard for success at Concordia College à Development of vocabulary in key subject areas à Development of key learning, teamwork and research skills. à Knowledge of the US education system and society

The High School Preparation Program is delivered at the Kings International Study Center on the campus of Concordia College. It is carefully designed to provide the perfect preparation for the Accelerated Bridge Program, developing the English language and study skills required to work effectively alongside American students. Flexibility is built into the Program so that students can join at different points throughout the year, and study for as long as they need depending on their language level.

Course structure and content 1. English for Academic Study This component will ensure students: à acquire specialized language in subject areas such as math and science à become acquainted with the style of language and vocabulary appropriate for high schoollevel coursework à develop strategies for completing academic reading and listening tasks à practice report-writing in particular subject areas à participate in group discussions learning to express ideas and opinions à respond to and summarize written works in English à have a solid introduction to social language norms and how young people in the US communicate with one another

2. Study and Organizational Skills This component enables students to: à set personal goals to manage time and deadlines for assigned projects à practice note-taking in academic classes à identify the main ideas and supporting details in articles à undertake effective group work practice à review the variety of learning strategies used to successfully study in an English-speaking environment à practice peer review of academic work à develop technology skills in the classroom 3. Introduction to Academic Subject Areas This component will ensure students: à audit High School classes to practice listening and note-taking skills à attend lectures on academic subjects à participate in discussions and debates on academic subjects

Direct progression to the Accelerated Bridge Program The Program is designed to integrate with the Accelerated Bridge curriculum. Once students have successfully completed the High School Preparation Program they will progress seamlessly to the Accelerated Bridge Program. Students with the appropriate language and academic level can enter the Accelerated Bridge Program directly. In this case submission of a Personal Statement and a Skype interview will be required.
