Welcome to Christ Church, Oxford I have been involved with English language teaching for quite a while. The one thing I have noticed over the last few years is that the need to speak English is becoming more and more important not only for those working in the language but also for those studying in it. English has become like maths or computer literacy, an indispensable 21st century skill. Those who have a sufficient level by the time they graduate from High School also give themselves the opportunity to study for all or part of their degree in English. The course we are running at Christ Church is designed to help these ambitious learners who wish to go on and study in English, whether it is in an English-speaking country or on an English-medium course somewhere else in the world. To succeed in these studies, in whatever subject, they will need to be able to communicate in English at a very high level. The aim of our course is to increase their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for this particular purpose. We will concentrate on the English needed for attending seminars and lectures, collaborating with lecturers and peers, planning and writing essays and generally adapting to the academic world. The course is small, allowing us to have close contact with each participant and to offer them a personalised pathway to improve the areas where they have the most pressing needs. Our experienced academic tutors will ensure that the course delivers the best possible results. In the beautiful surroundings of Christ Church they could not have a better chance to prepare for the academic world.

Core skills development 1. Academic English This course addresses the needs of learners who wish to study at university level in English. All four skills are covered in an academic context so participants will learn how to write essays, improve their academic reading strategies, participate in discussions and attend lectures. 2. Study skills Participants will be encouraged to study independently and will be trained in a wide range of skills they need to become more autonomous learners including note-taking, research techniques and vocabulary development. 3. IELTS preparation With IELTS becoming a key entrance exam to English-speaking universities, a part of each day will be dedicated to IELTS preparation across all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. 4. Critical thinking Whilst studying texts, attending lectures or taking part in seminars, participants will be trained to analyse and evaluate content in order to make judgements, a key skill in the academic world. They will learn to consider different opinions and stances and come to their own opinion which they will then be able to articulate in both oral and written forms. The course tutors are all experts in English for Academic Purposes and will provide an individual learning programme for each participant on the course as well as follow-up recommendations.
