Pagtatanggal: Pagbabago O Progreso?

Calbayog, not Killbayog Prerequisite: Drug Test chief POINT
In line with the anti-drug advocacy of the Duterte administration, the Department of Education is already looking into the possibility of conducting regular drug tests on public and private high school students. The administration believes that this should be given priority for the sake of the majority though the undertaking would call for a bigger funding. At present, the agency is limited to random drug tests in schools. In most cases, only those students who partake in extra-curricular activities and sports have the need to undergo the process. But in reasonable suspicion, a student can be subjected to a drug test if the school suspects or has evidence that he or she is using drugs. Such evidence might include direct observations of school officials, physical symptoms of being under the influence, and/or patterns of abnormal or erratic behavior. According to a research there are several testing methods that are currently available which involve urine, hair, oral fluids and sweat. Usually, tests are made accurate by having the samples divided to conduct another examination that will confirm the initial result. Federal guidelines have been set to ensure accuracy and fairness in drug testing programs. The inevitable question is, why do they need to involve the high school students in matters of drug testing? There is an explanation that adolescents’ brains and bodies are still developing, making them vulnerable to the harmful effects of drug use. Most teens do not use drugs, but for those who do, it can lead to a wide range of adverse effects on
their health and behavior. Their performance in school and their way of reaching out to the society will suffer, which will eventually distort their character in the minds of people as the hope of our country. This is one of the reasons why most parents would support this mandatory drug testing for high school students. It is a mere fact that even a single use of an intoxicating drug can affect a person’s way of thinking and decision making that may result to accidents, poor physical condition, and the risk of overdosing. Using drugs does not only interfere with a student’s ability to learn, but it can also disrupt the teaching environment, affecting other students, as well. It is undeniable to say that the use of illegal drugs has no positive impact to both the user and the people around him. Through conducting drug tests, they can identify teens who have started using drugs and would be good targets for early intervention, as well as identify those who already have drug problems, so they can be referred for treatment. The primary purpose of drug testing is not to punish students who use drugs but to prevent drug abuse and to help them become drug-free. If a student turns positive on drugs, the school can respond to the individual situation by counseling, follow-up testing, and drug treatment programs, depending on the case. This mandatory drug testing for high school students can aid to a broader awareness and prevention, and treatment programs with the common goal of reducing or even terminating the drug use of the students.
It is dismaying to think how the beautiful city of Calbayog has now been tagged as the city of killings, the City of Killbayog. Looking back before these unreasonable killings have become rampant, Calbayog was all peaceful and ravishing. Aside from its natural imposing wealth are its hard-working and principled Calbayognons who have well-contributed to the city’s honor and prosperity. SK Election: Necessary Or Unecessary? Calbayog City: Its
we LEAD Chiara Feona Arpon
“Ang kabataan ay ang pag-asa ng bayan.” This is the quotation we often hear in giving importance to the role of our youth in the future of our country. The youth today are now entrusted with that challange to transform the country into a better one. This is shown by the coming out of some legitimate youth organizations. One example is the Sangguniang Kabataan, commonly known as SK, which is a council composed of young individuals tasked to formulate their own affairs and given the opportunity to take part in Philippine
politics as well as in running the government. But is there still a need of continuing it nowadays? Or will it deserve abolition since the issue persists that it is just being used as a tool for some personal agenda or motives of politicians? As we all know, SK elections were scheduled at the end of October 2016 but postponed by the Duterte Administration. Many were not in favor but of course, others who agreed have their reasons, including Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, who said that the government is not yet ready to finance an
election to be held in the same year with the recent national elections. Just in case the SK elections push through, the following are the new provisions of the law: Age Requirement for SK Officials, Age Requirement for SK Members, AntiPolitical Dynasty Provision, Financial Independence, Comprehensive Barangay Youth Investment Plan, Creation of Local Youth Development Councils, Appointment of Local Youth Development Officers; and Mandatory Training. It was argued that the SK Elections do not bring much beneficial effect to the youth for they are just being used as training ground for corruption and continuation of political dynasties, which is of course unfair to others who are truly dedicated to their service of the youths. The pro-SK believes that it will serve as the voice of the youth in the community and can train them to become
good and active leaders in the future. It will help them to build and enhance their talents, abilities and skills at an early age. Also, training the youth at their young age can develop their ideas and perspectives that will give them advantage over those who did not. Despite all these recent developments, we should continue to be optimistic. After all, no less than the former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III last January 15, 2016, declared that the government today is a moving towards strengthening the programs for the youth. It is still true that the youth today are strong forces in social movements. Election or without election for the SK happening this year, the youth continues to be strong and able partner of our government, for after all, they are the hope of this land, our country. So what do you think, is SK Election necessary or unnecessary?

Way to Civilization
local PLATE Charmaine Ann Cabral
Throughout the years, Calbayog City became more and more progressive especially when it comes to economic progress. Big changes in the surroundings make it a really civilized city than it was before. But how could these changes affect the Calbayognons and the City itself? There are certainly advantages about Calbayog being a refined urban. First, it brings the people into an easy way of living. For example, because of the newly built Super Metro they don’t need to go far or have a hard time just to buy the things they need particularly food supplies. The city is also expecting for the opening of the two shopping malls in the city, the Gaisano Grand Mall and Robinsons which will give them a wider option. Second, it makes Calbayog par with other cities not just in Samar but also in the whole country. Although Calbayog is not as big and advanced like the cities of Cebu and Manila, it can provide enough the demands of the people in terms of education, food, employments and more. Third, a progressive city needs an extensive range of workers, which means a lot of jobless Calbayognons will be given a chance to get a job and earn money for them to sustain their needs. However, regardless of the benefits that the city will gain, it can’t deny the fact that there will be also disadvantages. Dirty environment and polluted surroundings—that would be the first negative effect to the city if it will become a fully civilized and modernised one. It is because,
if one city slowly becomes progressive, little by little several establishments will also rise. When this happens, the standard amount of garbage and trash that a city can only accommodate will also increase. This will be a huge problem for the city government. Second, it is the outcome of the first effect. This time, the citizens mostly the children will be affected by the harmful effects of the polluted and dirty environment. Because of the uncontrolled number of wastes, it will cause several consequences such as the occurrence of different diseases that will surely affect huge number of population in Calbayog. Third and last is the possibility of increase in population. If Calbayog will become a big city, people from isolated barangays will migrate near to it or typically within the city to easily provide their needs. Therefore, more residents means additional demands. So the big question is, how could the government of Calbayog pay attention to the needs of the people if there are only limited supplies? For short, it could be tricky in a sense that there is a chance of starving and the rate of poverty in the city will also increase. It is not important to think the advantages or disadvantages of Calbayog being a civilized city because it doesn’t matter anymore. What important is we are one in helping our city hand in hand to be progressive in the near future. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to support Calbayog in its way to civilization.

Killbayog/from p. 6 to be identified as the best city in Samar. Everything was all right until one day, the simultaneous news about separate incidents of stray bullets and intentional killings unexpectedly covered the newspapers. Innocent lives have been taken away so suddenly. Minor arguments have gone major worst enough to have terminated the lives of those who still had the potential to give honor to the city, or even to the country. Tarpaulins of ‘May you rest in peace...’ have scattered from houses to houses, churches and cemeteries. Educated or ignorant; rich or poor, no one has an escape. Grievances, mourning, and terror have dominated the hearts of the ever-smiling, free, and joyful Calbayognons. Those who want to live peacefully are deprived of their rights. Even the young citizens are terribly affected. Months ago, a 14 year old girl was accidentally shot by a stray bullet and died eventually; a graduating college student was also stabbed to death due to a wrong identity. Is this the kind of environment we would want our people to embrace? What then should we expect for the next generation? What about the morality of the little children witnessing these unrighteous acts at their young age? Friends are shedding tears; families are grieving. Where could all these injustices have rooted? Seemingly, it all started in the time of campaign before the 2016 elections. People in Samar particularly in Calbayog expressed their frustrations about the goons working for some politicians. It has put the notion among people that all these occurrences are politically-related crimes. If so, these are indeed obstacles to our political success. In this case, are not the happenings around us telling us something? They are indeed shouting for attention, calling for a plea to every citizen especially to the youth – the hope of our country, to justly exercise the right of suf-
frage; to choose leaders, not politicians. The power is in our hands, but we need to take heart to really know what is right and do accordingly. Whether the reasons behind all of these are the grudges of those competing for political power or the desperate acts for financial gain due to poverty, it is certain that the Calbayognons would not allow the inviting image of their hometown to just vanish instantly and without cause. No matter how impossible it may seem, the people of Calbayog will surely strive hard to restore the yesterday of this wonderful city. Though this widespread of killings arouses from time to time, the city of Calbayog is still the city of waterfalls; the ‘Talent Bank City’. It is still a haven of paradise. Despite of the unending felony, there are still plenty of reasons to stay in the city – the hospitable and humane Calbayognons, and the wondrous and flourishing nature that surrounds it. As the people of Calbayog it is our aim to draw once more the happiest smile on our innocent children’s faces – free from harm to play in any playground, free to express themselves. It is our duty to re-establish the fallen confidence of our investors and rebuild the peaceful Calbayog as it was back then. As we envision our city’s tomorrow, let us not be plummeted by the negatives. Let us instead seek to build a world where hope replaces fear, and words fall into action. Just do your part in making things around work for our common good. For as long as there are people in the city who are always ready to help and give love to every victim and to fight for everyone’s safety and freedom, they cannot convince anybody that this metropolis suits the term ‘Killbayog’. Certainly, there is no name we would allow our native land to be called other than Calbayog. After all that has happened, our beloved hometown is still Calbayog, not Killbayog.

The glory of student’s projects on the LENS Olga Marie Tarrayo
Projects are what teachers give and all students encounter. Project is a planned set of interrelated tasks to be executed over a fixed period and within certain cost and other limitations. This is also a kind of activity that is graded under Performance Task. In an institution like Christ the King College, the percentage of Performance Task differs in every subject. As stated in the student handbook, in the subjects: English, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, Values Education/ Religion, Performance Task affects 50%
of the final grade. As for Science and Mathematics; it weighs up to 40% of the final grade. While in MAPEH and TLE, the Performance Task weighs up to 60%. Since Performance Task has a big percentage, students must exert much effort for their own benefits too like having good grades if they passed their projects on its due date. Project is also a kind of evaluation of a subject. It can give knowledge and it can provide experience. But there are times when projects are given like bundles and have the same due date. Some
are even given when the quarterly examination is fast approaching that sometimes causes frustration or more likely stress on the student because of the lack of time for preparation. The individual might use other time allotted for another activity just so he could finish the project and have some spare time for preparation. W i t h t h a t hectic schedule of the students, they are bound to have less time for doing other stuff like bonding with the family and spending time with leisure. Despite of all the frustration and stress that a student experience, there is always a bright
side. Project helps you develop a skill just in the process of making that you can use in the near future. It can also improve our creativity. Meanwhile in group projects, the students can practice unity. In every project, we apply time management that we can use in everyday life. Students are nothing different from a laborer, they also get exhausted. But all students m u s t keep in mind, these hardworks today is for the betterment of our future. It starts with those projects that contributes to our final grades and with good grades, there will be more opportunities for those who do their best today.
Students are nothing different from a laborer, they also get exhausted.
Letter to the Editor Dear editor, I know this issue has already been dealt with but, why do we have to exchange our money with stubs at the canteen? Changing money to stubs does not change the value of money that we use to purchase at the canteen. It only causes a hold up in the line when we are buying food. Does changing our money to stubs have a purpose? Francis Raphael Pitogo Grade 10 – St. Francis of Assisi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Francis, Sending us your concern is greatly appreciated. Really, changing money to stubs takes more time falling in line at the canteen, seeming to be just a waste of time and effort. But actually, the purpose of its implementation is primarily for good service quality and secured handling of finance. First, it ensures secured handling of finance since the money is immediately handed to the assigned personnel as an exchange for stubs which the students will use to buy. Money is not directly given to the working students at the canteen to purchase food. Therefore, intentional taking of money will be avoided and it will be much easier for them to give the customer’s change. Another is that the canteen staff do not have to hold money as they serve food to the students. With that, we can guarantee safety and cleanliness of the food, enabling them to give good service quality. We hope this answers your query; it is always our pleasure to know your concerns. More power to you. The Editor

CHRISTI REGIAN VOICE This year the country elected a new president in the person of Rodrigo Roa Duterte. His election campaign focused on the idea of change. With this new administration, the King’s Herald Publication surveyed views of Christi Regians on this question:
What are your hopes for the Duterte Administration in the next six years?
Rodrigo Duterte is now the 16th president of the Philippines. With almost 16 million voters behind his presidency, the administration needs to meet the expectations of these people. What do people want? People want change. It has been three decades after the EDSA revolution, people wanted freedom and democracy, still it meant nothing. Progress is at a stand still. And people see Duterte as someone who can bring change and progress to our country. In his six years in term people hope for the change in labor, they want increased pay and stable jobs. They also want less crime rate, and Duterte is already working on that in his war on drugs. And for equality and the stop in discrimination, Duterte is supporting multiple religious and LGBT parties. His ways and actions may be inappropriate for a president, but he is a president who puts the people first than his self-image. In the six years that he will be sitting as president, what he does is a reflection of our country, our people and our role in the world to play. The Philippines is a rising nation and it is in the president’s hand to set its course. Vincent Ronin Serrato
I recommend that first of all, is the ‘The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, that all drug dealers, pushers, users, are to put to an end as soon as possible. Then the salary increase for teachers, the Three Child Policy, the conquering of the West Philippine Sea which is taken away from us by China. And quite possibly, peace from other countries such as America, China, Russia, etc. Niño Advincula Grade 10-St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Duterte is a strict and rigid president/leader. My only hope for his term is to eradicate graft and corruption, and the elimination of illegal drugs. If he continues the good job he is doing, and sticks to his plan, he maybe one of the Philippines finest presidents. Clemente Jose Rosales

Grade 9-St. John Duns Scotus
I’m hoping that the Duterte administration will maximize their responsibilities in eradicating corruption as well as to lessen poverty.
I hope that there would be peace, no war especially with the huge countries. Also, I expect that in his administration we could raise improvement in our economy so that other Filipinos will not have to work abroad and be distant from their families. I hope everything goes well in general.
I hope also that our farmers will be given enough resources so that they would be ale produce good amount of agricultural product to suffice the needs of our country. Lastly, I am hoping in the next six years for education to be accessible to all.

Crucifix between Scientifics
God is the creator of our world, our life—of everything—and science can explain beneath all of this and do what we think we can’t. Does science refute religion? Or does science address a different set of questions, with answers that can point toward religious truths? These are the two debates under the broad heading of God vs Sci-
ence. Brain chemists track imbalances that could account for the ecstatic states of visionary saints or some suggest, of Jesus. Like Freudianism before it, the field of evolutionary psychology generates theories of ultruism and even of religion that do not include God. Something called the multiverse hypothesis in cos-
round UP Trisha Rose Mante
mology speculates that ours may be but one in cascade of universes, suddenly bettering the odds that life could have cropped up here accidentally, without divine in-
tervention. Roman Catholicism’s Christoph Cardinal Schonborn has dubbed the most fervent of faith—challenging scientists, since they hope
science, beyond being a measure, can replace religion as a worldview and a touchstone. In recent years, I.D. (intelligent design) lost some of its journalistic heat when a federal judge dismissed it as pseudoscience unsuitable for teaching in some schools. Science have an established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol to say if such a thing is true. There’s a lot of observations and hypothesis in this field. And according to this, it says God doesn’t exist,
but then in God, we only have faith. We may not apply our five senses or the things in science to determine if God does really exist and if he's truly real. Because of faith, we believe it is. All of us have faith on many things. If not, we all think of things as flawed. The idea that science and religion, far from being complementary responses to the unknown, are at utter odds—or, as Yale psychologist Paul Bloom has written bluntly, “Religion and Science will always clash.”

A new wave for CKC
ears ago, many people have seen this place as eerie. The straggly trees in the pathways, the down-at-heel buildings and the tenebrous environment could give everyone a feeling that they were in an “auld lang syne”. But this place is now turning into a home, a home that everyone would love to dwell, because Christ the King College is currently embracing an enormous change.
Christ the King College proves that a lot can happen in a year. Just this year, the blessing and dedication of the new CKC Chapel and the opening of the Butterfly Sanctuary and Botanical Garden were held. And visibly by next school year, CKC will be opening its new gate. These changes somehow give the Christi Regians a delight that their school could also be their place of abode. CKC Chapel Seeing the crowd’s faces makes you realized that this is not just an ordinary celebration. The Bishop of Calbayog, Isabelo Abarquez; the Franciscans Friars who have travelled from Cebu and Mindanao headed by their custos, Fr. Felix Jungco, OFM; some Diocesan Priests; teaching and non-teaching staffs of CKC; students, Calbayognons and devotees of St. Francis of Assisi were all gathered to witness and be a part of the blessing and dedication of the new Christ the King Chapel. The chapel was a project by Br. Ariel Manga, OFM and was materialized with the help of architect Joel Mancol. It was aesthetically designed that made every Christi Regian proud of. There is a holy bone relic of Saint Francis of Assisi that is paced in the altar of the chapel. Every brick were carefully assembled and carved with pure love, good intention and unparalleled devotion to Catholic Faith. This chapel will serve as a home of our faith and a cradle of our Catholic Franciscan values. This historic blessing and dedication of the chapel was done on February 23, 2016. Christ the King Chapel is an edifice where Catholic Franciscan faith and values can be formed. This symbolic house of God is an instrument in modeling not only the Christi Regians but also the Calbayognons to become a person with high sense of moral values following the commands of God.

Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary There is nothing more calming than seeing the buds begin to flower on trees, hearing the soothing sounds of water rippling around rocks and the butterflies flying freely in the sanctuary, basking in the sunshine. These sights and sounds are just a few of the pleasures that await us at Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary. This 250 square metered, Automated Grip Irrigated-garden offers three different sections including the Tropical Landscape, Butterfly Sanctuary and the Walk-in Tunnel. As we enter through towards the garden, the first thing to be found is the Tropical Landscape. We can catch sight of the majestic artificial falls that draw us to the sound of running water. This brings us to witness the pond beside it. The water is lens clear that we can even spot tons of coy fish playfully swimming through it. Also, the tropical landscape has its own deep well. It brings some kind of magic quality to its visitors. The well makes us recognize its calmness as we observe it and at the same time leave us having the desire to let go one spoken wish. The first section is a haven of peace indeed. As we continue to walk toward Garden, we then pass to the next section which is the Butterfly Sanctuary. This place is actually covered with ultraviolet or UV plastic in order for the butterflies to not be penetrated by the predators. We can spot host plants in this sanctuary, specifically Malobago plant which acts as the nursery of the garden. This certain kind of host plant provides site for butterflies to lay eggs. The existence of host plants is very essential as it suffices the needs of building a Butterfly Sanctuary. Humming
birds flutter through air and at the same time, benefit from the plants around the sanctuary since they usually set on top of these and drink the nectar. Approximately, there are 50 species of butterflies that can be seen inside the refuge. Further beyond the sanctuary, we finally reach the last section which is the Walk-In Tunnel. There’s the most welcoming of scents in the air as we get to enter it. To our delight, we find brightly colored flowers surrounding the area. The certain tunnel is said to be controlled or computeroperated. As a matter of fact, the temperature drops below 19 degrees and that explains the actuality of cat flowers, strawberries and other cold hardy plants to survive and adapt to this extreme condition. Suspended sprinklers with misters and foggers surround the tunnel to humidify and keep the plant foliage constantly moist. The mist and fog inside the tunnel may shiver down one’s spine but everything is well worth the jaunt. When we get up to exit the tunnel, we walk straight to where the compost pit is. This is where we can find African Nightcrawlers which are said to be the best worms for quickly decomposing organic matter. Antonio’s Garden is truly a wonderful refuge. The garden is purposely built mainly for Science students who aim for deeper knowledge about living organisms and to help out conduct further studies about life and nature. Aside from Science, Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary is said to be related to Laudato Si’, the second encyclical of Pope Francis with the subtitle, “One Care for Common Home”. Apparently, Antonio’s Garden and Buttefly Sanctuary corresponds to climate change and preservation
of the ecosystem. It is definitely something to look forward to. The brain behind the beauty of Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary is the newly assigned Franciscan Friar, Bro. Roel Lopez Vera Cruz. He has been serving as a Franciscan for 10 years. Aside from earning his degree on Philosophy at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary or OLAS, he proceeded pursuing Theology as well at the said seminary. This self-made man was not only a University of Eastern Philippines or UEP Graduate, but also he was able to attain degrees in Plasmology and Entomology. Needless to mention he also graduated in Israel focusing fields on Horti-culture, Pomology and Drip Irrigation, and Organic Farming. Bro. Roel Vera Cruz’s achievements are too numerous to list. He is indeed an accomplished man, considering he is also the man behind Antonio’s Garden and Buttefly Sanctuary. “Fulfillment”, that is what Bro. Roel feels every time he finds himself in Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary. The garden is something that gives him the delight and relates himself to everything that makes up the garden since he also spent a lot of time studying entomology and engaging on this certain field. What makes Antonio’s Garden and Butterfly Sanctuary special is it can bring anyone closer to nature and at the same time an escape from reality. Bro. Roel Vera Cruz, who attained his success through education, hard work and willpower should be acknowledged as he brings us Antonio’s Garden and Buttefly Sanctuary, a haven of peace and solitude.
CKC’s New Gate and other improvements Christ the King College is currently working for its new gate. The gate will be placed along Rueda Street. The purpose of this gate is for the Basic Education so they will no longer walk from the old gate located in Magsaysay Blvd. The location is ideal because this near the Ramon Isaac building which houses the Elementary and Senior High School Department. The iconic four pillars of CKC will also be revived it this new gate. The four pillars symbolize the four people who had great contribution on the establishment of CKC throughout the years. The pillars will be the new façade of this new gate. This gate may be another beautiful spot in the campus and could be a gate of Christi Regians’ faith. Aside from the new gate, CKC is also expecting new buildings to rise. Anytime next year, the construction of the two-storey building for Senior High School Department will commence. The building will be located in between the SPED Department building and CKC-YSO Music Hall. This will be the future home of the newest member of the CKC family, the SHS Department. With its huge increase in enrollment this school year, the Graduate School of CKC will be expecting a new building of their own. They will be together with the College of Law. These two departments may be transferring in the future to its new building which will be erected on the current location of Communication Arts building and Uniform Department. Indeed, CKC will be truly a home for every Christi Regian. As they say, once a Christi Regian, always a Christi Regian.

Unbeknown Testimony of the Fallen Ones by: Archael Sabong “Splash! Boogsh! “, the bomb-like vigorous spatter of water echoed throughout the ocean like wildfire as I fell from the sky. Huh. I guess my wings broke. They told me not to fly too high because the sun’s ardent heat might burn my fragile wings. They told me not to fly too low so that I won’t fall into the ocean. I usually listened. But eventually, I got tired of doing so. Tell me, do angels ever get to live? Do they get to be free? To feel love?
“Angels aren’t supposed to fall in love with demons”, he chuckled. I looked like a human now. His black luscious locks embraced his scalp instead of pure baldness. His eyes show real emotions, as if his brown orbs could drown me in their unfathomable meaning. His facial features perfectly together, his skin was pale, like he erased the red layer he always had on before. He no longer had horns, tails, wings. He was beautiful.
I never did. I was different and I knew it. I knew it the second. I fell deeply in love with him.
“They took everything we are. We’re not supernatural beings anymore. We’re humans,” he finished off explaining. Though he couldn’t read minds anymore, he could still sense my headscratching bewilderment.
I swam to the shore, panting and almost out of breath, almost as if I’m human. An effete human who needs air to live. Wait. Am I one?
His right of being a demon was completely snatched and became a feeble being. And so did I. Every bit of celestial evidence… gone.
Story of Us by: Erika Astilla
I’m the kind of girl that dislikes drama and isn’t really a big fan of romance. By the way, I’m Chanel, 20 years old, broken hearted. It hurts to be left by someone who you love dearly and shared memories for the past years. I was devastated so bad that I don’t know how to rebuild myself again. Ironic isn’t it, I became the person that I always make fun of; the drama queens and person that is always saying hugots. Hugot is something you learn from experience especially when it is related to romance; it is a statement that is deep and emotional. I still remember the time when he and I were still best friends and I gave him an advice regarding his love life but he suddenly got angry and said that I had no right to butt in his life because I was just his friend. I was taken by surprise by his reaction and I answered him with one of Jolina Magdangal’s line in her movie “Labs kita. Okey ka lang?” “Yes kaibigan mo ko. Kaibigan mo LANG ako. And that’s all I ever was to you– your best friend.” And I walked out. I felt insulted at that time because it was like he was saying that I am an insignificant person in his life where in fact we were best friends since we were 6 years old. It hurts to imagine that I was the one that always makes his assignment, the one who always makes him smile
when his down, the one who always helps him and yet he still think of me just as his friend. Can’t it be something more? Oh how I wish we could be more than just friends. If he only knows that he is the reason why I’m not a dramatic and romantic kind of girl. I became like this because each and every one of his girlfriends are like that, I wanted to be different so that if he would notice me as more than friends, we might last longer than them. We didn’t talk for a month after that incident and I thought it is for the best because it is getting harder and harder for me to maintain my facade. It was my vacant class around 2 in the afternoon when I was writing in my diary in the library when suddenly a hand coming from the back snatched my diary away, I turned around to see who the culprit is and saw no one other than my best friend. I paused to look at his face with his signature goofy smile but nervousness enveloped me after realizing you were reading my diary where I was currently writing a letter about how much I love him. I quickly snatched my diary away but I was too late, his face says it all, he already found out. Before he could speak I suddenly blurted out, “Sorry hindi ko sinasadyang ma fall.” And once again, I walked out on him. I can’t show him my face anymore knowing that he knew that I loved him since we
were 6. I expected that we would just be like the month before, ignoring each other. But I was taken by surprise the next day when a band suddenly serenaded me and at the chorus of the song, he emerged out of nowhere and gave me a bouquet of flowers. He said that he also loved me too since we were young but was just too afraid to admit it. And then every day he would give me flowers, say compliments, walks me home, in short he’s doing the things he didn’t do when he hadn’t found out that I loved him. It didn’t take long until I said yes to him and we became official on the day of his birthday but our happiness didn’t last. It was our second monthsary when his ex transferred to our school, he became cold, hangs out less, and seldom texts or calls me anymore. I suddenly thought “Bakit biglang nagbago ang lahat?” But the answer was obvious wasn’t it? He changed because his past came back. Then I realized, was I just a rebound? He hadn’t moved on with his ex didn’t he? My guess was right when he texted me to meet up at our favourite restaurant. When I got there, he immediately said. “I’m sorry.” I forced a smile. “May mga bagay talaga na sa umpisa lang masaya.” I said but he didn’t answer. “You made me believe that we had a chance.” I said quoting Sharon Cuneta in her movie: Minsan Minahal Kita and yet he still didn’t answer. Then I asked him a question from one of Claudine Barreto’s movie: Milan“Mahal mo ba ako kasi kailangan mo ako o kailangan mo ako kasi mahal mo ako?”and
He walked away from me, as if he was certain of leaving me behind his trail. I held his hand, sadness evident in my eyes although my heart jolts with euphoria because I can finally touch him now that we’re human. “Where are you going?” He turned back to face me, a slight smile crept upon his face, confident, “I’m going to find Nivana.” After everything I’ve been through, trying to find my own utopia and looking for the adventurous mysteries that would hinder the pathroads before me, I realized that he was the mystery I’ve been looking for. He was the fountain of eternal youth. He was an adverse angel. He was somewhat a kind of an erotic vampire. Or maybe an alpha. A ghost perhaps? But nope, he was none of those creatures now. He was just ethereal. He was… fictional. I breathed of heavy sigh, looked back at him with my fiery zealous expression and austerely shot my eyes to meet his. “Take me with you.” He grinned – a grin unlike his devilish one -
once again he didn’t respond, the answer was already clear. I stood up and walked away trying so hard to keep the tears from falling. He didn’t stop me from leaving nor called out, he just let me go and that hurt me even more. I cried my heart out every day and uses up several tissue boxes. I want to scream the pain away, I want to be angry but all I did was cry. I had never felt so pathetic in my whole entire life. I asked myself if where was the Chanel that said to never cry for a boy. Where is the Chanel that always makes fun of the drama queens? Where is that Chanel? That Chanel is long gone and maybe this is my karma for all the teasing that I did to the drama queens before. It’s been months after our break-up and I can’t still move-on, I mean how can I if almost every day I bump into him in the corridor. We don’t smile at each other nor talk; we are what we call strangers with memories. I tried to smile and be happy without him heck I even tried to flirt with other guys to make him realize what his missing but it’s like he can’t see me anymore, all he see is her. One of my friends said that I look like an idiot, forcing myself to be happy when it’s so obvious that I’m not. Then I suddenly remembered Kim Chiu’s Line in her movie: Paano Na Kaya. “Tanga na kung tanga pero mahal kita.” I admit that I’m an idiot, still hoping for something that can never happen, sorry if I can’t help myself. I love him and that is my biggest mistake. I want to tell him Bea Alonzo’s line in “One More Chance.” “Sana ako pa rin. Ako na-
lang, ako nalang ulit.” Why did that girl have to show up again? But if she haven’t I wouldn’t realize that I was just a rebound. But what did that girl do to deserve him more than I? I had him at his worse yet he still chose that girl. Why can’t it be me? Why doesn’t he like me back? Different questions swirled into my head and I have no answer for each question. It’s been six month since and I’m still not over him, I failed few of my subjects, doesn’t pass projects and don’t listen to class anymore, in short I was mess. I had no idea that his impact on me was this massive; if only I knew then I should have avoided him from the very start, now I’m the one who’s suffering. Doesn’t he feel guilty for what he did? How can he sleep at night knowing that he hurt me, he hurt his best friend? Has he have no shame to get back together with his ex right after our breakup? But what’s the use of these questions if the person doesn’t even care. Then one day, one of my friends told me, more like commanded me to move-on. She said that I should move-on, that I shouldn’t waste my tears on jerks like him and that I shouldn’t destroy my life over a man who is not worth it. “Kung kinaya ko, kaya mo rin. Walang sukuan.” She said quoting Marcelo Santos III. She made me understand that it’s not the end of the world. She gave me the hope of rebuilding myself again and she certainly lifted up my spirit. And by that day I decided to start over again so that one day I can proudly say. “Hi. Ako pala yung sinayang mo.”

If High School Life was a Movie by: Fhoebi de Guia
I
s your real life like any of the amazing and cheesy movies about teenagers? Probably not, unless your mom happens to be an awesome screenwriter who’s actually writing something loosely based on your life in order to pay for your Junior High tuition. But what if your life were made into a movie? Would people want to stay and see it? Would you want to see it? How would you want it to end? What if you knew you had total control over the story line? Imagine your life as an epic, three-hour movie. In this saga there are numerous high points and low points, and both drama and comedy. There are coming-of-age moments and passages of growing older. There will likely be some real challenges, and maybe even a few moments when you think you won’t make it. The movie may have some scary scenes. It will be tough! But there will also be scenes of joy and victory. There will be times when you’re proud of what you’ve overcome. Sooner or later, every movie
and every life comes to an end. But let’s not consider the end just yet, with all the credits and the debrief over whether sitting in the theater for three hours was worth it. Instead, let’s consider the scenes that transpire along the way. In the epic, three-hour movie of your life, every scene exists for a reason. Where do these scenes come from? Presumably they come from the director, who determines the plotting and sequence of events from start to finish. Who directs the movie of your life? Well, you do—of course. It’s your life! You’re already the star of your own movie. So make it a good one. A blockbuster! So here’s the interesting part: in the movie of your life, what happens when something goes wrong? What happens when an unexpected challenge appears? If you believe that your life isn’t determined entirely by chance, but instead at least partially through your own choices, perhaps the unexpected challenges are there for you to grow. If something hap-
A Different Plane, A Different Level by: Aidan Troy Gomez Sometimes, we dream of being Batman capturing and punishing villains that do heinous crimes as we guard the city of Gotham. But sometimes, we dream of being CJ in the world of GTA, living our life in Groove Street doing whatever the hell we want. But really, we do this just to get away from it all because sometimes we just want to escape and be free from the boredom and the stress of life. We just want to live a different life, an alter-ego, to do things that we can’t do in the real world. To live a life we dream of no matter how right or wrong. And that life is possible in the gaming world. A part of the gaming world includes online games and these include Dota 2, GTA, LoL, Call of Duty, and even Minecraft. Most of these games lets us step foot in a world we could only dream of, lets us experience things that we cannot in reality. I know most of you have already tried these games but there’s so much more out there like The Chronicles of Elyria, TERA, and Battlefield. If you are willing to try some of these or even to just play online games in
itself, here are some tips and tricks to get you by. First! Always be respectful. You got to learn how to respect the gaming community, you’re not the only one in the game and I’m pretty sure not everyone’s a calm, chill gamer. When you respect, you’re also respected. Second! No pain, no gain. Be patient, work hard to get stronger and once you do that, all the gold will come rushin’ in. Third! You win some, you lose some. You’re not always going to win, we make mistakes that make us lose but we should learn from it and become better. Fourth! Play to Win. Who plays to lose anyways? Winning means more rewards and another W in the books. And finally, fifth! Have fun. We may get caught up in the moment but that’s the beauty of it. The passion, the drive, the fire, enjoy the moments and have a great time. Me personally, I’ve always loved gaming, gaming is in my blood. So, I’ll tell you this. Sit down, turn on the PC, put your headphones on, and get immersed in the world of online gaming.
pens that isn’t what you want or expect, ask yourself, “Why do I put this in my movie?” and “How will I respond?” and if something goes wrong in the movie of your life, where did that scene come from? Why did you put it there, and what can you learn from it? We know that we grow through hardship, but we don’t often purposely choose hardship. Or do we? Maybe we write these scenes into the movie of our life, either consciously or otherwise. I don’t believe that “everything happens for a reason” or that the world is fair. If we pause for even a moment to consider the victims of war and violence, as well as those who live in true poverty, I’d never want to suggest that somehow they imposed those tragedies on their lives. But if we leave trauma aside and focus instead on our lives of ordinary ups and downs, perhaps it’s helpful to consider the scenario of our life as a movie, with scenes added or deleted by the director. It’s just life; it’s not the end of the world! And you are the screen-
writer, the director, the editor—and don’t worry so much about what the critics will think, because you’re also the audience. Some people say my life would make a good movie, but I always say I’m not ready yet because I still don’t know how it’s going to end! Of course, for anyone who knows me even marginally well, you know I’m working toward a happy ending. Or let’s say a dozen little happy endings. It’s about learning to make choices that don’t “play out like a movie,” but let you experience life as it is. Anyway, my point is, take some time and think about your life through the lens of a movie camera—your movie camera. Own it, direct it, have fun with it. Make it one that people will feel good watching and be happy when it ends well. Or not. It’s your movie! Sooner or later your story will unfold; whether it's an action/romantic-comedy or a documentary on pencils is up to you. If your life were a movie, would anyone care to watch it?
COSMETICS:
the two sides of beauty by: Nicky Jatulan

osmetics also known as Make-up became very popular especially to the women. In the 21st century, more women use cosmetics than males. People use it to enhance and have an immediate improvement on their physical appearance and odour. Make-up is composed of chemical compounds, it is either came from natural sources or being in synthetic way. Lipstick, mascara, perfume, lotions, hairstyling products are examples of cosmetics. They give us lot of advantages when it comes on improving one's appearance. They help us to boost our confidence. There are creams who have an anti-aging, sunscreens where can help us to prevent too much exposure of the sun rays. Moisturizers can help our hands become softer and moisturized. Lotions where it can block pores in the skin. And for males, the hair gel where can give their hair a style. But too much use of cosmetics can harm not just our physical health but also our mental health. Pyschological factors might occur when we had experienced aller-
gies, breakouts and blemishes. Using cosmetics can boost our confidence but excessive use can low our self-esteem. Breakouts also cause irritation on our lips, chin and cheeks. Sometimes, as we focus on how good the quality is, we tend to forget to have a glimpse on how expensive it is. It also can cause skin problems and etcetera. Using cosmetics isn't illegal or should be avoided for it boosts our self-confidence in a way it enrich and upgrade our appearance. It makes us look and feel better than before. But, too much will never be okay. Excessive use can damage our skin but the worst is excessive use might bring us to the world where we don't know ourselves anymore. It is good to explore something new as it is part of our lives but never forget how and what you were when you were still a caterpillar. Always remember that there are things that are only temporary, but what matters the most is how we treasure our self before when we were still on the first side of beauty, as how we love ourself after we reached the second side of beauty.

BIYAHE NI DREW in the
City of Waterfalls
“Do you hear it, biyaheros?” TV host Drew Arellano starts off his episode travel show “Biyahe ni Drew” in GMA News TV last October 14, 2016 with the calming sounds of waterfalls from the first crowned city of Samar, Calbayog. Along his journey, he heard and felt summer once again and proves to his viewers why Calbayog City is known as “The City of Waterfalls.” Out of all the 7 majestic waterfalls of Calbayog City, he gladly went to 4 of them. He first hiked to Busay Falls located at Barangay Cagcanipao Sur which took an hour and immediately jumped right in when he got there, not wasting the chance to savor the time in such a pretty place where there is no entrance free. And of course he couldn’t bear to go to his next destination without a quick break with the Pinoy all-time summer favorite, the Halo-halo paired with barbecue and batchoy. It’s a good thing it’s not hard
to find an affordable snack house at Calbayog City! After that short summer-recess, it is time to go back to the beach. Specifically to one of the most popular beaches here, the Malajog Beach located at Barangay Malajog. Here, you can go snorkeling and see the colorful fishes swim around the coral reefs or ride around the sea with a banana boat or jet-ski. Not too far away, there is an Island called Daraga waiting for your footsteps to be on it, to get there you can simply ride a pump boat or take the fun way, a 750 meter zip line for P200. When you do decide to ride the zipline, all the big rocks you’ll be passing by were the coral reefs back in the old days, and when you finally slide down the line, you are going to be in awe with the breathtaking view. On his 2nd day of adventure, he visited Larik Falls located at Barangay Tinaplacan. Unlike Busay Falls, you

can get here quicker but the pathway is pretty hard to go through since there are a lot of rocks. However, if you are a hard-core adventurer then it’s going to be worth it. Once you arrive you could jump into the deep blue water and swim under a huge rock. Larik falls is not the place where tourists usually go to, most people would prefer to check out Bangon Falls and Tarangban Falls which is both just nearby Larik Falls, but this place is totally recommended for swimmers or risk-takers! For wanderers who are not fond of thrilling adventures, then you should definitely go to one of Calbayog’s Hidden Gem, the Mainit Hotspring at Barangay Rizal II. There are not much tourists here so if you would love some alone time or a quiet get away for free, then this place is perfect! Now, let’s talk about food, shall we? Specifically the keepsake pride of Calbayog, Tinapa! Tinapa is fish
cooked or preserved through the process of smoking. It is often made from blackfin scad (known locally as galunggong), or from milkfish, which is locally known as bangus. You can get yours for P100 to P150 per pack at Pingping’s Tinapa at Barangay Matobato, which is not too far from the city proper. Cheap and delicious, I am sure your tummy will thank you! If you are more into history then you can visit Samar’s Archeological and Cultural Museum at Christ the King College, where you may also hear the graceful sound of Christ the King’s Youth Symphony Orchestra who played for Pope Francis during his visit. Calbayog City may be small and still be “unknown” to most, but once you experience life here, it will surely be unforgettable. Why not join Calbayognons under the majestic waterfalls?
The K-POP Effect Rizton Muñoz
K-POP has become trendy, not confined to Korea but spread worldwide, especially in Asia. The so-called Korean wave has exerted its strong influences on young people, particularly teenagers, in some Asian countries, specifically in the Philippines. It cannot be denied that in addition to a type of entertainment, K-pop functions as “a cultural bridge” helping improve the understandings of Asian cultures in general and Korean culture in particular. However, it also has bad sides, that is, affecting teenagers in a negative way. Firstly, K-pop contributes to some severe health problems in young fans. Indeed, those who spend too much time on watching music videos, searching information about K-pop idols usually suffer asthenia as a result of lacking sleep, staying up late and skipping meals. Consequently, they may be in a debilitating condition or even have eye diseases, memo-
ry loss sooner or later! Furthermore, it is evidenced that teen fans tend to be depression-prone and autismprone. Secondly, K-pop is blamed for a fall in academic achievement of some teenaged students. This is probably because some who are into Kpop are so obsessed with some girl bands or boy bands that they do not
K-pop threatens to destroy close-knit relationship... pay attention in class and keep listening music during lessons. They also stay at home stalking their favorite idols via Internet, wasting time on reading such nonsensical stuffs about them as scandals, debut years instead of reading books, doing homework or participating in learning groups. In other words, they are dis-
tracting their studying. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that they have poorer performance at school. Last but not least, K-pop may lead to lack of social contact and affect relationships between children and parents. It is clear that most K-pop addicts do not go out as much as they used to. They prefer sitting “within four corners” and enjoying their favorite SNSD’s hits, Super Junior’s new album, and BTS’ Music Videos without being annoyed by others, specifically their parents. Some crazy fans publicly show extreme attitude towards. K-pop itself is not bad but its influences are causing worrying troubles for teenagers in particular and society in general. Health problems and poor performance at school are serious consequences. However, more importantly, Kpop threatens to destroy close-knit relationships between children and parents.

10 reasons why Pokemon go did not last
A
by: Cian Breandan Ygrubay
few weeks ago, if you saw someone wandering around your neighborhood staring at their phone, you might have assumed they were lost. Now, it would not be too much of a stretch to think that they are busy locating, capturing, battling or training fictional creatures called Pokémon. Welcome to Pokémon Go, the free-to-play location-based augmented reality game that has taken the world by storm since its release on July 6. For those that are unfamiliar with the Pokémon brand and wondering what the latest hoopla is all about, here is a brief rundown. Pokemon GO is considered one of the most top rated game. By skyrocketing it`s popularity it`s clear that a new phenomenom has begun, but why such a perfect game didn`t last?
In it`s 1st week Pokemon GO ha a report against It ,stating, This game drains my battery life. Pokemon GO is a resource-intensive game and uses the GPS, camera and mobile internet constantly to stay connected, and while you play the game to work, you realize there is hardly any juice left on your smartphone to last you the entire day “Don’t Pokemon GO and drive” This quote seemed to be more popular than Pokemon GO itself. This game requires their users to stare at their screens continuously and hunt for pokemons that could lead the player anywhere – busy roads, under construction building etc. This is why it could be dangerous. There are also rumors of some Malicous fake apps abound. Anything that is popular easily attracts the interests of
hackers. Yet to be officially released globally, people are looking at the APK file of the game from unverified sources. There are also reports about it concerning about privacy. Pokeom go is said to be a Threat to privacy The game gets full access to your google accounts. It allows the gaming company to read your emails, something that should never happen. While playing you are required to give attention to your phone. Pokemon GO Adds extra attentions. Many players have reported that they are making new friends via this game. Well, making new friends is a great thing, but it also brings some unwanted attention. In the release of Pokemon GO some girlfriend said that they had found their rivals. It can destroy relationships. Players enjoy playing the game with their family and friends,

ZIKA by: Gian Franco Apes I
What is Zika Virus? Its symptoms, facts, and diagnosis. Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness that is spread by the aedesspecies of mosquito, the mosquito is also responsible for the transmission of dengue and chikungunya iruses. Unlike Malariacarrying mosquitoes, this species is mostly active during the day and so barrier methods such as mosquito nets are ineffective. These mosquitoes can survive in both indoor and otdoor environments. The two unknown species responsible for Zika transmission are
the Aedes albopictus, known as Asian Tiger mosquito, and the Aedes aegypti species. The Zika virus was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947. The first human case, however was detected in Nigeria in 1954, and the following that there have been further outbreaks in Africa, South East Asia, and the Pacific Islands. While the symptoms of Zika typically pass within the space of a week, there have been recent concerns about the virus are due to a potential link between Zika and birth defects such as microcephaly.
In light of a strongly suspected casual relationship, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the Zika virus outbreak constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concerns on February 1, 2016. The centers for Disease control and prevention (CDC) has issued travel warnings for people traveling to areas and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. At present, there is no treatment for the Virus. So, avoiding mosquito bites is a key aspect of Zika virus prevention.
but at a certain point, their addiction creates problems for their loved ones, but this may not be the case for everyone. Pokémon GO works by finding certain Pokémon at specific locations. It means that at a certain time, a lot of players might gather at an exact location to find their Pokémon. It did not take long for the looters to find this new way of exploiting the players. Getting robbed is one of the issues about pokemon GO. Banning the players using the GPS hack was one of the major reasons why pokemon didn`t last. Many people played this game in a PC. Usage of PC is one of the main reasons why many people got banned in this game. Also Globe removes the free Pokemon GO in their sims. Players who`s only depending on it. Quit playing
right after the devision made by the Globe. We may see Pokemon GO as a free augmented reality game but it is not really free. While the game is free, Pokemon GO might prove to be a costly affair in the long run. As the game can be played online only, your mobile is sure to exhaust faster. If you are really addicted to the game; do watch out for your data consumption. Critics are calling Pokémon GO a temporary phenomenon that will end within months, if not weeks. Fans, on the other hand, think the game is just the beginning of a longterm movement! What do you believe? Be sure to let us. These are not reasons for you not to play but reasons why other players stopped to play the augmented reality game.
Science as an Investment Basic science is an investment in the long term future without a clear short term gain. But lot of third world countries fail to see the point in investing their money to this said research. Why should they invest in research when they can barely sustain the people’s basic needs? Researching in basic science is very important in technological and warfare advancements. So the first advancement, technological, provides a lot of benefits. First benefit is that the more advanced the technology is the more profitable the country or the society becomes. For example, Sony is a Japanese corporation that has a diverse and wide demographic as far as consumers go, they were able to achieve this kind of appliances because of them funding the researchers to have a better sound system and overall entertainment features.
Sci-MINDED Lance Dionne Mancol
So the funding that they paid the researchers for practically paid for itself and then some. Because of this investment their long term future got better. They mass produced these products and got a lot of profit that equates to them expanding their corporation. Second benefit is the technology advancement in medicinal and healthcare. Many innocent lives have been taking away because of illnesses and diseases. Technological advancements helped in mitigating the innocent lives that are taken away in a daily basis.
When doctors are incentivized to conduct research and get funding, these researches could result in the development of new drugs, and treatments which have helped in curing most challenging human diseases and this has helped in saving so many lives and it has also prolonged the human lifespan. The next form of advancement is the warfare advancement. So if a country that is stronger in terms of military weapons are less likely to be terrorized in comparison to the weaker countries.

St. Teresa: A Model of Love and Compassion
Cartoon by: Anthony Casilao

A
n e x traordinary woman known as Mother Teresa, now Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was born on August 26, 1910 and was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. For her unwavering commitment to aiding those most in need, Mother Teresa stands out as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. She was canonized as a saint on September 4, 2016, a day before the 19th anniversary of her death. Tens of thousands of Catholics and pilgrims from around the world attended the canonization to celebrate the woman who had been called “the saint of the gutters” during her lifetime because of her charitable work with the poor. Saint Teresa is also known for all the wisdom she has shared to the whole world which are mostly about the things she observed in her journey as a nun. Here are some of his remarkable words: “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
Every person who comes into your life is someone you are destined to meet. It’s not a mere coincidence that you can ignore. It is true that some people will stay in your life while some will teach you a lesson. But no matter how they treat you, treat them with genuine kindness. Welcome every person in your life with a smile and benevolence. “The most terrible poverty is loneliness, and the feeling of being unloved.” Saint Teresa had a massive love for the poor in her heart. She has lived her life loving the people around her which was expressed through all her charity works and care for the sick and the less fortunate. As they say home is not measured by how big your house is, but by how big the love found in the family is. Wealth is not really found in money and other material possessions. Wealth is measured by how much love you receive from other people, and how much love you have in your heart. Therefore, having nothing and not having all the comforts of life do not actually define poverty. It is only in the absence of joy and love that poverty is found. And the only way to avoid such poverty is to show love to all the people around you.
Bless All Animals!
E
by: Stephanie Kaye Albana
very 4th of October the whole school community of Christ the King College celebrates the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, regarded as patron saints of animals. It is customary that in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for every creature, all animals are led to churches for a special ceremony called the “Blessing of Pets”. The ceremony also raises a larger question. In our society of animal lovers, how are the vast majority of animals treated? Most animals are killed in the food industry than in laboratories, fur farms, puppy mills, trapping and hunting
combined. These animals are not given the chance to do anything that is natural to them- they are never able to feel that grass beneath their feet, the sun on their faces, or even the fresh air- things that they were designed and created to enjoy by God.
Some animals, such as calves, are kept for isolation, while others, such as chickens are crowded so closely together that they can’t barely move. Their fear and pain only end at the moment after they have been driven, without food or water and through all weather
“People are unrealistic, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway.” Nobody is perfect; neither am I nor are you. Be it as a person, performer, writer, lover, or even as a professional – no one is perfect. But despite of our imperfections, there is still this someone who loves us perfectly – God. Because of His unconditional love for us, we are also able to love one another. St. Teresa tells us in this quotation that we need to love other people regardless of their flaws, and that we have to appreciate them for who they really are, for by that we might as well gain the love that we need; the love we are unworthy of as sinners. “Without patience we will learn less in life. We will see less. We will feel less. We will hear less. Ironically, rush and more usually mean less,” Patience is an important ingredient for success. We all know that everything in this world needs to undergo the process. Keep in mind that it takes time for a little seed to grow into a mighty tree. A tree cannot bear fruit instantly. We need to wait for its season to produce a delicious fruit. The same is true with success. It does not come to you by means of lucky charms nor secret techniques. You need to earn it. You have to work for it. If you fail once, do not give up for it’s not yet the end of everything.
extremes, to the mechanized murder of this generation’s slaughterhouse, where millions each year have their skin ripped off and their body parts hacked off. St. Francis of Assisi is a heroic example of selflessness, of sacrifice, of humility and is a reminder of the attainability of achieving a harmonious state of unity and peace among all creations by simply exuding love.

It is just preparing you for something better that’s coming. Don’t lose hope, just keep on trying.
“In the final analysis it is between you and God, it was never between you and them anyway.” This is one of the lines written by Saint Teresa that conveys a very essential message the people of today needs to be aware of. In this journey called life, it has already become a challenge for many people to please everyone. But whatever we do, it is certain that we cannot please all the people around us. No matter how good you are there will always be people who will not look up to you. Others may even criticize and judge you. But as long as you are not stepping on other people’s feet, do not mind them. It is undeniable that Saint Teresa has brought an ever-living legacy of faith in action, and love in service into this world. She is utterly exemplary in every areas of her life. Her selfless acts of charity for the poor resemble the love that Christ brought into this world. The holiness and mercy she has shown is just an example of how we all must take action to our responsibilities as Christians – responding to every call and living the example of Christ constantly every day.
Youfra visits Home for the Aged by: Giles Aliman, Staff Wrier Around 40 members of the Franciscan Youth Organization (Youfra) attended the Outreach Program held at the Home for the Aged in Barangay Rawis on August 11, 2016. Youfra, one of the religious group in the school, is known for helping people, in the same manner as St. Francis of Assisi decided to serve Jesus. Sister Marilyn Yu, FMSC led the members of Youfra in visiting the elders. This is one of their activities this year. Sister Yu gave a message to the resi-
dents of the home wherein she encouraged them to strengthen their faith. Yofura members also gave an intermission number to entertain the lolas. Afterward they distributed goods such as biscuits, shampoos, soaps and many more. The members also brought pillows to the elders that they can use for slepping. Youfra is comprised of members coming from Junior High School, Senior High School and College department.

YES, IT ’S YOU
A hand to hold Athena Kate Bendo
Chiara Arpon
Now, I need a hand to hold,
I felt like there was an agitation inside me Bothered of your presence but ironically speaking. Yes, I made you special like a delicacy I do believe that there’s something unique in you.
Kamilah Gracia Ortiz
Someone who will always be with you Supporting you with the things you do To comfort you when you’re feeling blue And stays true to you all the way through.
As I go on through this life, Because I'm not very strong,
Someone to whom you can tell your wonderful stories Who’ll share with you great and special memories Which can give you lifetime and endless happiness That will stay in your heart for you to reminisce.
And I want someone at my side
A friend whom you can always count on to Who will do everything as long as it’s for you Someone who’ll lift you up and will never say boo When you are in despair, would be on the rescue.
To reassure me when it
A person who’ll love you for who you really are And will not mind if you are not a famous star Someone who’ll complete your day even from afar Someone who can make you smile effortlessly every hour.
To comfort and sustain me,
It took a half bit of me before I made a full choice Seeing for my part is I matured and ready? Scrutinizing and making me visible at all time Yes, just a management of time and eagerness to notice you.
And help me up if I fall,
Oh best friend, my dearest best friend Is it me who’ll lift your soul up? Or make your head held high I bet it’s me that will be a forever instrument to you.
Feels like no one cares at all... Someone is holding my hand;
Through those wide gaps of rocky roads The absurd doings of mine I wasted But never the memories we wasted Oh better days I consider when I’m with you.
His hands are strong and kind. He is my Best friend, Here throughout this life of mine.
My sister, not by blood but by destiny I’ll be forever ready for you to lean on Haven’t you noticed in every end of each stanza? It is YOU, the one I’m referring as one of the remarkable persons in my life.
A buddy who is as sweet as the morning dew The warmest sunshine that will light up your day too I kept looking for that one friend my whole life through Until I realized I already have you.
With You Jocelle Kyla Bendo
Midnight Thoughts By: Erika Ann C. Astilla
Making you my happiness was my biggest mistake, And boy, it made my heart ache, You were a memory too good to forsake, A memory that makes my heart break. You weren’t easy to forget, Even now I’m still not over you yet, But don’t worry just a little more push then you’ll be out of my head, But rather than head, I want you to be out of my heart instead. I know we’ve already broken up now, But the question is why and how, We were pretty fine back then, Not until you saw your ex again. Sometimes I wonder was I just a rebound? A replacement since she was not around, I’m feeling as stupid as my question sound, As in so stupid that I want to drown. I guess the answer is already clear as my tears, I’m just the one that doesn’t accept it out of fear, Fear of the fact that you never loved me, And that I was just a pastime when you were bored and free. What’s the point of thinking these stuffs anyway? You didn’t and wouldn’t care for me any day, I should move on and let myself be happy for once starting today, Yeah, it’s better that way.

No blue skies and starry nights No sun that shines so bright My whole world just seemed so plain That was me before you came. When that day that I saw you My world seemed so new I can’t explain this strange feeling Am I in love or am I just dreaming? Will you be mine forever? A question, I can’t let you answer I’d rather love you inside Than love you ever for life. I wish this love comes from God Something unconditional and makes no harm And I wish our days will never last And prevails to cease the worst of our past.
The Flower Kylie Ventures
The flower fell in love with the sun as It shines its way through the clouds. Who knew that the sun would destroy her As the ground dried up, no trace of water left. The flower met the moon, who she met during The night with the screaming diffs, oh how They were so loud. So loud that she could go deaf The moon also leaves her, just like the sun did And moments shared with the sun dries her up again. Later did she remember the clouds, the one Who blocks the light but gives her water, The one that even during the night it Wouldn’t leave her.

Ateneo Recruits /from page 20 California who’s moving to the Philippines to play for Ateneo this fall. Is he athletic? His dunk videos on Twitter should answer that for you. Can he shoot? He nailed 35% from his attempts from downtown as a high school senior, and that’s against more athletic opponents than the ones you’d see here. Can he do other things? His 16 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.7 steals a game averages point to yes. It’s not difficult to imagine why leaving the United States to play college basketball in Ateneo was tempting. The school is reputable for its outstanding education. The basketball program’s history is as rich as there is, with the Blue Eagles recently winning 5 straight UAAP titles from 2008-2012 and making two more Final Four appearances since. Verano’s athletic prowess, skill-set, and, fair or not, being a Fili-
pino-American make the expectations for his arrival lofty. That’s not to say the anticipation is that he’ll produce 20 points a game right away, although every time he hits the court, Ateneo fans and UAAP spectators are likely to expect an instant impact. But before even getting UAAP minutes, he’s undoubtedly going to have to show his worth in practice sessions. Aside from the aforementioned incoming rookies mentioned, the Blue Eagles’ list of returning second year players is arguably the best of the UAAP: Aaron Black, Matt Nieto, Adrian Wong, Jerie Pingoy, and Hubert Cani. 2014 Rookie of the Year Arvin Tolentino is also set to return along with Thirdy Ravena, whose academics are now in order. There’s also CJ Perez, nicknamed “Baby Beast” for the resemblance of his game to Calvin Abueva’s, who’s set to take the torch from Kiefer Ravena as the Blue Eagles’ go-to guy.

‘Parade Pakulo’ opens Intrams ‘16 THE OPENING parade of the 2016 Institutional Intramurals was filled with colors and music as each participating unit presented their yell last September 19, 2016. This is in response to the new competition which was dubbed as “Parade Pakulo” that was added in this year’s sports fest. The said competition was the new innovations that was introduced under the new leadership of Mr. Dario Ortiz as the College Sports Coordinator. Aside from having a “pakulo” during the parade, each unit was also represented by their respective muse and escort. This was in lieu of the search for the Mr. and Ms. CKC Intramurals which was removed this year. The week-long intramurals was centred on the theme, “New Spirit, New Fervour.” An opening program was held at the Assumption Province Gymnatorium right after the parade which was participated by most of the Christi Regians. The presidents of the student body of the elementary, junior high, senior high and college led the symbolic light-
ing of the urn which is the sign of the start of the games. In this year’s intramurals, the new department of the school which is the Senior High School (SHS) was separated as a new unit and competed in the tertiary level together with Unit 1-College of Teacher Education, Unit 2-College of Nursing with College Arts and Sciences and College of Computer Science, and Unit 3- College of Accountancy and College of Business Administration. Unit 4 was assigned to SHS. The same unit division was adopted in Elementary and Junior High School level. A field demonstration coming from the Nursery, Kinder, Grade 1 & pupils proceeded after the program. Meanwhile, the cheer dance competition for JHS and Tertiary level and the dance sport competition for the Tertiary level came next after the presentation from the pupils. The ball games and other sports continued on the second day while the literary, musical, and dance competition was held for three nights from September 20-23, 2016. he Ateneo Blue Eagles have the collection of new recruits joining the team in 2016. You have Xavier standout Tyler Tio, a fundamentally-sound prospect whose game is tailor-made for college hoops. There’s Jolo Mendoza, the hero of the Blue Eaglets who’s been compared to Kiefer Ravena. And then the other graduates of the Ateneo junior’s program, from Shaun Ildefonso to Gian Mamuyac to BJ Andrade, each
of whom has the potential to make an impact in the higher level. These players and what they can do on the court aren’t unknown to Filipino fans. They’ve been raised in the basketball-crazy environment of the Philippines, and their high school careers have revealed their potentials. School, Student, Sports & Support IT IS every athletes dream to compete in a higher level of competition such as Olympics, SEA Games or even Palarong Pambansa. However, this question remains… Why is it hard for the Calbayog Division top top or even qualify in Palarong Pambansa? It is no reason that athletes could not qualify because they are not just good enough to beat the others. No one can consider their selves as the better athletes until they win, and you cannot consider them winners until they won fairly and have fought utilizing their full potential talent and skills as athletes. Every one of us has the distinct talent we need to develop. Whereas in sports, you need to undergo steady, strategic and productive training to meet a certain development both mentally and physically. However, raw talent is also a requirement to succeed in a certain sport. Nevertheless, it is depressing to say that the Calbayog Division are finding hard to reach the unreachable dream. It is not exaggerating to say that we only have the slightest chance to qualify only if there are still no actions regarding to the sports program of the city. One big problem identified is the lack of

support from the society, including the family, coaches and partly, the local government. Parents’ treatment of these kind of things affects the performance of the student athletes. Their support encourages student athletes to do better or vice-versa. Another thing is on how their coaches train their students, whether it is being too serious, strict, or just being calm. Coaches are the ones who shape the student athletes’ body and spirit. They play a vital role in improving our representatives for the National level. Thus, if coaches fail to do his or her work, the athletes would most likely to be defeated too. While the local government is a big part too
since they are the ones that ensures that the athletes have the best program wherein they could enhance their abilities, discover their full potential and be able to develop it then. At the end of the day, student athletes of Calbayog Division must continue to persevere in order for them to reach their dreams, for them to qualify and participate in the Palarong Pambansa. Still, their efforts are the most counted reason among all other reasons of winning. However, as students, they must also realize the balance between sport and education. You may watch from the bleachers, what matters is that you are watching as a responsible student and a persistent athlete.
One big problem identified is the lack of support from the society...
