Stay Grafting Meet 23 years old Belvin Thompson from South London, whose celeb sketches are scaling heights right now. His work has received very positive feedback but he needs your help to turn his hobby into a source of income. Get behind Belvin as he takes STAY GRAFTING worldwide

I

started Stay Grafting as a hobby in my first year of university, I always did art but I never took it too seriously as my course was more technical. My uni had a Facebook page called ‘Spotted’, where anything and everything about Coventry Uni was posted, I used to go on there for laughs, then I thought why not do a couple of celeb sketches and ask them to

encouraging speech about taking my passion seriously and being a positive role model for the youth in Peckham, as many don’t find themselves in their talent until its too late. We took pictures, he showed his wonderful family and allowed me to go and get my folder to show everyone around him, then posted this all on his Instagram page. After this, I was so inspired to take my art to places I couldn’t imagine, so I continued, receiving feedback on social media and face to face from the likes of Giggs, Skepta, Mist, Stardom, Naira Marley, Lil Boosie, Meagan Good, Sneakbo, Mo The Comedian, Stormzy, Chelsea’s own Ola Aina, Michael Dapaah & many more. I plan to take this worldwide, and hopefully as I go along, big doors open in this for me, God willing.

For enquiries/work contact Belvin via staygrafting12@hotmail.com post it. The feedback it got was crazy, I think I drew Tyrese and Lana Del Rey, I had people asking for prices, these times, I had never made a penny off art, it was a good feeling. I had met artists such as Koby Martin after this post giving me encouragement; coming from him being an established artist himself, working with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Krept & Konan and being a creative at Disturbing LDN, I knew I could possibly take this further. I randomly saw Ashley Walters outside my house when I came back to London for the summer. I remembered I sketched him a while ago, so I rushed back inside and managed to find the art I did. When I approached him with it, he at first was shocked and asked me multiple times if I had really did this art of him. He then gave me a really URBAN HYPE 10

THE RETURN OF

Determined, reserved and devoted to his craft. Sona is without a doubt one of the pioneers of UK Afrobeats. His distinct sound along with the use of Yoruba in his music separates him from others. He was gone for a bit but he is back now with a lot more GINGER. Urban Hype explores the re-emergence of a man who was once the talk of the town back in 2013/2014. The system halted his progress but can’t take away his shine.

URBAN HYPE 27

T

hursday evening and I’ve just walked into a studio in North London. Mover’s Everything Sweet is blaring from the speakers – “oh na na it’s gonna be a good day” Sona sings over the track. He’s already in his element. With his shirt off he’s moving effortlessly from pose to pose as the camera man snaps away. A 6ft tower, with broad shoulders, solid abs and too many tattoos to count. It’s not hard to see why girls can’t get enough of him. Clearly happy to be back doing what he loves, Sona’s energy is infectious. You’d never believe that just a couple of months ago he was sat behind a prison cell. Although reserved, it’s without a doubt he’s determined and devoted to his craft. Born in Britain, Sona, or as he’s otherwise known Daniel Emifeoluwa, had strong musical influences from a young age. His dad was a choir master at his local church. “Growing up around music

“Thinking of coming out and being able to provide for my family and the people around me kept me motivated”

made me really wanna do it,” says Sona. “My dad told me when I was 11 that he knew I’d make music but back then all I was really interested in was football.” Over the years his love for music would grow, with his future sound being heavily influenced by his Nigerian roots. “I use a lot of Yoruba in my music because I was brought up in a Yoruba- speaking household, so that’s what I’m used to. I portray myself through my own music and my heritage is a big part of me” he says with a smile. Sona began taking his musical career serious halfway through secondary school and released the freestyle ‘Shola’ while URBAN HYPE 28

studying Music Technology at university. The buzz around the track was unexpected and with nothing but positive feedback, he was spurred on to continue making music. It was in 2014 that the artist became a true household name, bursting onto the Afrobeat scene with his popular single ‘No Wahala.’ With expectations that he would become one of the most promising Afrobeats artists in the UK, he would go on to produce a further two hit songs ‘Omode Yi’ and ‘Ijo Sona’, racking up over half a million streams and views across YouTube and Soundcloud in just over six months. Sona’s pending success came to an abrupt halt when he was convicted of a robbery against an elderly man along with ex semi-professional footballer Rishi Nankani later that year. Despite his continual claims of innocence, Sona was sentenced to four years in prison but was released late October 2016 after serving two years with a twoyear probation period. Although a major set back, the artist didn’t allow the sen-

tencing to make him complacent. As well as building a #goals body, Sona recorded two tracks ‘Do Me’ and ‘Coming Home’ while in music classes in prison with the help of a music teacher and the producer OY. However, the major motivations behind the tracks weren’t to try and remain relevant. “Obviously, I wanted to still be remembered but going away didn’t make me fear I’d be forgotten. I think that’s something you fear all the time anyway,” says Sona. “ I knew I was going to come out and make music. That’s what it’s all about - the music really, isn’t it? I feel like I speak through my music more than other times and I just wanted to keep putting out tracks,” he adds. Despite making those two tracks Sona found it most frustrating that all the time he spent inside could have been better used making more music in the studio. During this period it was mostly his family that kept his spirits high. “All I wanted to do was provide for them. So while I was away I was just thinking of what I’m going to do and how I was going to make sure my team and I were going to do it properly.” Now fully re-immersed into the music scene and taking his inspiration from everywhere and everything, Sona is more than grateful for the response

from his supporters. “When I feel the love I feel like I’m doing something right and obviously I want to keep putting out more music ,” - he says. “I think because I use my own sound and like I said I portray myself through my songs, so they see I’m different to everybody else and they warm to that. How I feel when I’m recording ends up on the track. The beat comes first and then I start singing a melody. Then that’s it, it’s done,” he adds. As it’s getting late I say my goodbyes and mark this day as one to remember – the day I met a young, hungry artist with the potential to go very far. Suddenly I realise I have one last question. “What’s next for you?” I shouted from the door. “I’m just going to keep bringing loads more ginger,” he says with the Cheshire-cat -like grin I’ve become familiar with. “I’m just doing my own thing but my team and I are doing it together. We’re just going to keep pushing. I’m trying to become a worldwide brand. I plan to be everywhere.” Remember, you first heard it here.

AFROBEAT A A RISING GENRE IN THE UK MUSIC SCENE

frobeats emerged in the 70s with the rise of West African music styles, such as Highlife and Fuji combined with American funk and jazz. The main attraction of this music style are the chanted vocals and percussion. Afrobeats grew and developed but also became more popular with the rise of social media and the genre’s exposure to more mainstream media outlets. Afrobeats definitely became more prominent as Afrobeat Godfathers such as Fela Kuti

used the musical genre to broadcast his views on social change and political decision-making in Nigeria at the time. Afrobeats in the more recent years has become less about the sovereignty of the music alone but more to do with the culture of the area where the music originated from and the culture surrounding the music. Afrobeat culture has consumed the entertainment industry rather quickly not

URBAN HYPE 34

only in Western Africa but also in the UK. The music industry has been taken over by many artists such as 2face Idibia, Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Fuse ODG, Mista Silva, Kwamz & Flava, Moelogo, Lola Rae, Mr Eazi, Wizkid, Davido, D’banj, Psquare, Sarkodie, M.I, Ice Prince, R2Bees, Castro, Iyanya, Flavour, Banky W, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Waje, Olamide, Phyno and Patoranking.

Many DJs have also made the expansion of Afrobeats and its culture to spread like wildfire through the introduction to mainstream radio and music outlets such as DJ Abrantee who brought the sounds of West Africa right to British radio stations. Afrobeat bands have become more popular recently as well, with the rise of live concerts. An upcoming band that have built a substantial following has been The Compozers. They have also ventured into other genres making themselves more versatile. Traditional culture such as : clothing and informal slang have followed the afrobeat movement across the world. More and more designers have endorsed the clothing and have implemented designs, colours, textures and prints into their work. Urban American artists have embraced West African designs such as Dashikis and Tie‘n’ Dye prints, which have been seen in various music performances and videos. Even though artists of Nigerian descent are not Afrobeat artists, they have endorsed the culture through clothing. This can be seen with artists such as Jidenna, who sport Nigerian clothing even though being heavily prevalent in another musical genre. Afrobeats, as a genre, has definitely made its mark in the music industry and we hope to see this rise continue. For the culture!

RISING TALENT

“The Music Magician”

URBAN HYPE 35

T

he UK Afrobeat scene is very much on the rise, with different calibres of artists emerging from various areas of the Country. The music genre has not had much of a look in the past but recent events and talents, shows that things are taking a step in the right direction. The UK music scene is finally starting to appreciate the genre developed from various West African musical styles.

W

e caught with one of the rising talent in the UK Afrobeat scene, ZIZIBO. Born in Nigeria and came to the UK aged 14, Ezekiel (his real name) has a strong passion for music. He identifies himself as the king of harmonies and an Afro eclectic singer.

URBAN HYPE 36

How long have you been singing for?... “I’ve been singing since i

was 9 actually...in the choir, with my brothers, even when i was at school i used to make music with my friends. We just go in the music room, get on the software and learn how to play around with it and all because we had a passion for music.”

When did you start taking it serious?... “I would say about 2 years

ago. Technically i’ve always taken it serious but i had a fairytale idea in my mind that someone would come to my house, knock on my door and sign me to a record label but it never really happened. With life these days, when you want something, you have to go and get it; for people to help you, you have to help yourself. That’s what i’ve had to do because i really want this and i feel like music is my life.”

How has the journey been so far?... “It’s been great and interesting, a

few highs and lows but i’m getting there. The support from my family and friends is really amazing and that’s something that i’ve been really happy with, because there’s nothing better than your family and friends supporting you. It means that they believe in you and when they do so, it kinda makes you feel like you’re doing something right.”

“The support from my family and friends is really amazing and that’s something that i’ve been really happy with” What do you make of the UK Afrobeat scene?... “At the moment

it’s amazing. I feel like this is the best period for UK Afrobeats; before it wasn’t really rated but now with a few artists currently on the scene (including myself),hopefully we can take it to greater places. Publicity wise, it’s getting out there to the world...so this is the best

chance to get ourselves out there and hopefully God will see us through.”

Why is it considered Afrobeat just in the UK?...“With that one, i

guess it’s because a lot of artist in Nigeria or other African countries are back home where it’s like the mother tongue and everything feels more authentic. In the UK, they feel like some people are faking it and the accent is not real. I don’t really like to classify it as UK Afrobeats, i call it Afrobeats in general because it’s music and UK Scene is on the rise.”

Where do you see the Afro music in the UK heading ? can it be big as Grime?...“Yes it can. I feel

like it’s a matter of people embracing it. A lot of people have been getting onto it which is great news for myself and everyone else. I see it expanding globally and hopefully i would be one of the people that takes it there, which is one of my personal goals.”

Not a lot of artists get invited to their country of Origin to perform, why is that?...“I think it’s all

a matter of time...i don’t know why but eventually it will happen more frequently. I don’t blame artist that actually relocate to their country of origin because they are the people that actually like that kind of vibe that your music brings. I

won’t say Nigeria for example don’t rate us but maybe they haven’t seen enough of good artist to appreciate us. With time, i’m sure it would happen.”

The Artists over there seem to only need you guys when they’re coming over here to perform, aside that, they don’t really care... “It’s a fair point but i

feel like it’s all about time. As long as the UK Scene keeps making good music, we will get there. The sky’s the limit. Plans to break into the Nigerian Market It’s not easy but for me, I love Nigeria with all my heart; it’s my country and where i was raised. With the industry in general, it’s just about writing good music, connecting with people, my fans and people who believe in me. Make sure that i keep doing my thing and do it to the best of my ability. I’m working on a project which should be out this summer. I hope that draws people’s attention towards and give them an insight into what i’m all about. The songs are really good and i’m excited!.”

“As long as the UK Scene keeps making good music, we will get there. The sky’s the limit” URBAN HYPE 37

Summer is around the corner, any shows/ festivals ?...“I plan on doing a few shows. I will be doing a mini headline show after the release of the project. Me and my fans, let’s just vibe and go from there. In addition to that, i will be releasing more visuals.”

what is Zizibo like outside music?...“Fashion is a big part of me. I love african prints, so i tend to wear them quite a lot. I play football on the side when i can, just to keep fit. I read book, watch netflix... and chill too. I produce, go church every sunday as much as i can because God is the one that has brought me this far so i have to give him glory every minute. And that’s pretty much me!!.” The name ZIZIBO, how did that come about?... “I was in secondary school and i

was good at football; some guy randomly called ZIZIBO and i went with it. My actual name is Ezekiel, so it kind of links to it.”

Any artists you’re looking to work with ?...“It would be nice to

work with the guys who are killing it in the scene right now and people who genuinely like my music. Hopefully at some point that would happen but with regards to collabs, i kind of let it happen naturally. i don’t like forcing things but there’s a lot of good artists out there and i’m definitely going to work with some. I’m working with some people at the moment and i don’t want to mention any names...you just have to see it as it happens.” Top 5 Afrobeat artist...“I know i’m going to miss out people regardless of who i choose but for now i will just say Wizkid, Wande Cole, Davido, Mr Eazi is killing the scene right now and Maleek Berry who is inspiring - he produces and sings as well. Those are my top 5 guys. There are loads of other people i haven’t mentioned but those are my top 5 at the moment.”

Visiting Nigeria any time soon?...“I’m

going there soon because i need to do a media tour over there. Probably visit radio stations, just for awareness and publicity; perform at events because i realise that some of the tracks i have would do a lot more better in Nigeria. People tell me, but it’s hard when i’m not there. sometimes people need to see you to get behind you...I’m definitely going there soon”

Urban Hype Star Artist For This Issue

LOJAY

Our Star Artist for this issue is UK Afrobeat Gem Lojay, whose music is simply a breathe of fresh air in the scene. On himself as an upcoming artist and his music I’m a crazy guy, i’m very very weird. I like to think outside the box, which means that whenever i’m composing my music, i don’t like it to sound normal… even if it’s not drastically different, there has to be one or two things different. I’m still young… At 21, i still have time to make a lot of music which i have a crazy passion for. On his Music Inspiration My music is inspired by Lagbaja, Micheal Jackson, John Bellion, Daddy Showkey and perhaps fella, although he wasn’t really the guy that i grew up listening. I do pay attention to the Nigerian music scene which is doing very well at the moment. Future Plans I have a lot in store to come. The released tracks is just the start of many things to come. With the right exposure, i’m definitely sure that i can contribute a lot to the Afrobeats scene.
