How to reduce mosquito breeding habitats

SUMMER 2018

Celebrating the glorious views from our Kings’ Park patios Whether screened in or fully enclosed, one of the most delightful features of our Kings Park homes, are the patios. Whether your patio view is the lush greenery surrounding the foot bridge, or the swimming pool with foliage-laden sidewalks, our patios offer early morning serenity, mid-day chillaxing, and the perfect setting for an ice cold beverage on a steamy summer night.

As South Floridians, we know the potential health risks of mosquitoes. As neighbors, we can help protect each other by becoming watchdogs for mosquito breeding habitats. Mosquitoes can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads. The life cycle of mosquitoes is approximately seven days, so you should implement a regular routine to inspect your property for breeding habitats, dump standing water, and cover any areas that could collect standing water, especially after it rains. Place larvicide into bromeliads and any containers that cannot be dumped every two to three days. Source: broward.org

Welcome to Kings Park

No matter where you came from -- we welcome you. Whether you’re a renter, first-time home buyer or longtime resident, Kings Park is proud of the diversity in our community, from the smallest child to our most seasoned residents.

Considering a kitchen renovation?

Few things improve the enjoyment of our homes like an upgraded or renovated kitchen. Pictured here, are some of the great kitchen ideas designed by our neighbors. If you’re considering remodeling your kitchen, here’s a few tips from residents who have gone through the process: First, reverse the electrical box. Whether one bedroom or two – have a licensed electrician reverse your electrical box from the kitchen wall to the foyer wall. Once moved, the electrical box is easy to access and disguise with wall art. Next, move the refrigerator. Move the refrigerator to the wall where the electrical box was previously installed. This simple change will create lots of useful counter space. Finally, open-up the pass through. The pass-thru window between the kitchen and living room is not a supporting wall in most units – removing that wall will create an open spacious feeling throughout your entire home. Most important: Comply with city rules and regs. To ensure condo resale value, and for the safety of others, always pull a permit for major work and use only licensed and certified contractors.

Neighbors can be your best resource. By Kim Beers On a trip to Europe a few years back, I started to panic when I realized I left my holiday lights plugged in. The fix was easy enough. I called my Kings Park neighbor, with whom I shared a key, and she unplugged my five strings of twinking blue holiday lights. More recently, I learned that my neighbor had a debilitating flu. I made it a point to check on him daily. I asked him if he had enough fluids, and did he need me to pick-up a prescription or water the plants. These everyday tasks can become impossible when fighting a fever in excess of 100 degrees.

Fortunately, most of us have someone we can call to help with these common everyday challenges. Our support team may live in South Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach, but they can easily make the short drive to help us in a pinch. These back-up plans work well, until extreme weather knocks out the street lights, floods roads, or scatters tree branches onto streets and highways. Electric can be down for weeks and the internet is sometimes completely offline. At this point, your friends in Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach have problems of their own -- and they cannot get to you so easily. This is when knowing your neighbors is important. Many cities are now adding “have a neighbor-to-neighbor assistance plan in place” as part of their seasonal hurricane planning. Cities have learned that in the event of a significant weather incident – immediate neighbors become the most important resource for residents in need. So take a moment to say “hello” to your Kings Park neighbors and get to know a little bit about them. You never know when you might need the kindness of your neighbor.

Are you doing recycling right?

Fortunately, proper recycling is one easy thing we can each do to help our planet. However, done incorrectly, our recycling good intentions end up in the very landfill we sought to avoid. To help get you on the recycling right path, let’s explore three common recycling myths: Myth #1. Plastic bags are a recyclable plastic. They are not. But they can be returned to the store for recycling: Gather all your plastic shopping bags and stuff them into one bag. Take them with you on your next trip to the grocery store. Once you get to the store you will find a large recycle bin in front of their building. Deposit your plastic bag full of other plastic bags into the recycle bin. Myth #2. Styrofoam can be recycled. Althought it is bad for our environment, styrofoam can be recycled just like the plastic shopping bags: Gather your sytrofoam coffee cups and egg cartons, then return them to the grocery store on your next visit. Myth #3. Pizza boxes are corregated so they belong in the recycle bin. Yes, but mostly no. Although corregated cardboard is recyclable, the soggy drippings from the cheese, pepperoni, sausauge and vegetable oil is not. So be sure to place your pizza boxes in the regular trash, or tear off the top of the box – assuming it has no food oil stains – then put the box top in the recycling and the oily bottom in regular trash. Done correctly, our recycling can be comingled, sold to recycling buyers and repurposed to create new products.

We know it’s important to recycle and be active participants in helping to save our natural resources, reduce our global footprint and work together to reduce sea level rise.

The Good Neighbor Award by Mary Hillman

I would like to personally nominate all the “Good Neighbors” who pick-up the slack for others. Kudos to the neighbor who spots unbroken-down boxes in the blue recycling bins (taking up all available space); then takes it upon themselves to remove those boxes by stomping them down flat, or removing packing tape so they can be easily flattened. There is also the neighbor who comes across a scrap in their hallway or catwalk, and they stop to pick it up and dispose of it properly. Sometimes I think that this is not my mess, but it is in my community, therefore it is my mess, and it is your mess too. So the Good Neighbor Award goes to all our neighbors who are setting good examples and going above and beyond, who are dedicated to making Kings Park a better place to live. You are my kind of neighbors!

Kings Park Fact Did you know that our buildings are constructed of cement block? This is one of the sturdiest building materials in construction today.
