Through the generosity of many, many King families, we celebrate the opening of the Performing Arts Center. If you were not able to attend the grand opening and hear a stirring performance by the King Choir, I hope you can make the US performance of “Our Town” on November 18 and 19. The educational opportunities afforded by and educational excellence created with this new facility are hard to appreciate until you see students on stage. The PAC is about much more than performing arts; just as the South Field has been about so much more than interscholastic athletics and Homecoming. The PAC is about assemblies in all divisions; academic lectures; admissions presentations by visiting colleges and universities; PA events; and gathering and study space for our students. As you may recall, the PAC was part of a triumvirate of building projects to be funded by the Campaign for Excellence. The first was the South Field. The second was the PAC and significant improvements to the North Field. The third is renovation of the US building. These renovations were not possible until we constructed the PAC – thereby vacating and making available the space in what was the old theater. Thank you again for bringing us two-thirds of the way home – the final stretch lies ahead. As impressive as these facilities are, they are important only in so far as they serve the Mission of the School. After a two-year process of review, the Board of Trustees approved a refreshed Mission Statement last June. It is on our web site. It is both new and familiar. It reflects our core values of commitment to “Educational Excellence” in a culture of civility with “Respect for the Individual.” As I often like to remind myself, words mean things. When we say we pursue Educational Excellence, that is what intend to do. When we say we are committed to Respect for the Individual, we are. One of the School’s major strategic tools for the pursuit of Educational Excellence and a significant emblem of our Respect for each other and our community is the Annual Fund. Last year Annual Giving set a record of $1.42 million with 91% parent participation. These numbers are so gratifying – thank you. Even with this strong showing, King significantly lags its peer schools in Annual Fund donations as measured by dollars per student. As with the positive impact of recent capital improvements, this unsettling statistic is only important in its impact on our ability to pursue our Mission and provide an excellent education to our students. As a Trustee I feel comfortable that King does pursue its Mission aggressively and with success. At the same time, to “prepare our students to thrive in a rapidly changing world” – the preamble to the Mission – we must be ever on the march. With respect to educational excellence we should strive to compare ourselves not with our local peer group but to excellent schools nationally. A robust Annual Fund is critical to this endeavor. Or Annual Fund goal for the coming year is $1.5 million and 100% parent participation – I know we will meet it. Thank you again for your support of our School and being members of our 146-year-old institution.

A letter from thomAS mAIN Dear King Community: I do so enjoy writing an introduction to this annual document. This is a publication that memorializes the tremendous, broad, and deep support that our community provides to our School. So many individuals – from so many eras and so many constituencies – have made supporting this institution and the children that are here every day a philanthropic priority. And make no mistake – this support makes quite a difference. We are a much better school for the incredible generosity of the greater King community. The last decade has seen great development of our School, all of which has been supported by the names in this book. Our facilities are far better suited to serve as learning spaces for our students; our teaching professionals are compensated in a much more competitive manner; our educational program is both deeper and broader; and our college acceptances are quite strong. While the improvements in our facilities are the changes that are most present to a visitor to our campus, I am most pleased with the development of our educational program. A few examples: in the recent past we have added five Advanced Placement courses to the US program; Chinese has been included in the Language Departments of the Middle and Upper Schools; and the number of US Electives we offer has tripled, as has the number of Independent Studies. The number of clubs in both Middle and Upper Schools has dramatically increased. LS students have embraced Singapore Math, and the LS Science Program has become dynamic, engaging, and is rooted in the study of the scientific method. LS Spanish meets more frequently, supporting early foreign language acquisition. We have re-structured our Music and Drama Programs, Grades PreK-12, to allow for more depth and expertise in the instruction of both. And, we have added to our College Counseling Department, in order to keep ahead in this critical program. Obviously, there is more, but this is the sort of program development that impacts our students daily. And all of this would not be possible without the efforts and generosity of so many people, past and present, who are committed to the School. So, thank you to everyone who has made King a priority and who has contributed so generously to what we are today. You are doing something that makes a significant difference in the lives of our children today, as well as those of future generations.

Thomas B. Main Head of School

“I ask the Class of 2011, to remember, if anything through your travels, the camaraderie, passion, hard work, and wisdom from your years at King. Reflect on what you have been given, what you have done, and all you can still accomplish.”

Alumni Prize: Max Orenstein US Prize: Amanda Meyer Faculty Prize: Ilse Heine

Jesse Futterman, Senior Speaker “As individuals, we all have our different strengths and interests, which differ from violin to photography to fashion, but, at the same time, we possess strengths as a defined group. There is a balance, a chi (qi), if you will, between the whole, and it’s parts, which makes us very special.”

Tom Main, Head of School “More than any class that has passed through our halls, this group has grown up with our School. In fact, they have been a fundamental component of their School’s maturation. Not only do they represent King, but they were primary in defining what they now represent. They are King in a manner and with a depth that is unique to them.”

Frederick Sievert, Commencement Speaker “As you consider what you do with our own life, you can do no better than to simply follow your passions. So my first piece of simple advice to you is to search your souls and identify your own passions, and follow them.”

Senior May Project – Stepping Out of the Classroom The final semester of senior year is historically one of anticipation and contemplation, while simultaneously a search for a sense of independence. Seniors begin to look ahead to summer plans and college, which makes it difficult to concentrate on their academics. The King Senior May Project was borne of a desire to cure this condition, commonly known as senioritis, and also to give seniors an opportunity to step off campus and develop an individual experience that deepens an interest or passion. The program allows seniors to study or work, at King or another location, for two weeks at the end of May. They are encouraged to explore a personal passion that inspires and motivates them during their last weeks of high school. Students have an opportunity to gain real–life experience while grasping a better understanding of time management, commitment, and planning. The project also provides an additional opportunity to solidify a basic readiness for the next step in their journeys, where King very much wants them to succeed. This year’s pilot program delved into a variety of interests including EMT training, an internship with a group of hedge funds, and volunteer assignments with the Red Cross. Twenty-five seniors participated in the program and they were accepted based on the strength of their proposals. Each student worked with a faculty advisor and was required to keep a process portfolio, which included daily journal entries, photographs, or artwork. Head of Upper School Marnie Sadlowsky created a committee of seasoned Administrators and Teachers to oversee the pilot program and encouraged students to take ownership of their projects. “We didn’t want the students to be too overwhelmed with requirements, but we did want them to reflect meaningfully on their experience and these reflections supported the final presentations of their work, “ she said. “This year was obviously a pilot year for us with this program, and we are going to look at year two the same way,” Sadlowsky said. “We have a great committee of accomplished Teachers and Administrators working on the program, and we are certainly excited to make the Senior May Project something that is meaningful, challenging, and inspiring for our young adults. We want this project to be something that honors our students and highlights their passions and interests during their final weeks at King.”

Jack Mehan ‘11 While some students contemplated ideas for their project, Jack Mehan ’11 had little trouble deciding on his choice as he tapped into a lifelong passion for medical training and helping others. “I have to be excited about what I am doing and I was excited about this,” said Jack referring to his project with the Greenwich EMT. He worked several 12-hour and six-hour shifts to fulfill his commitment. “I learned so much more than I would have sitting in a classroom during those last few weeks. I was able to master a lot of skills, get a lot of practice, and now feel more comfortable answering emergency calls,” he said. Jack will attend Tulane University in the fall, helping to rebuild New Orleans, a city he visited twice on volunteer missions after Hurricane Katrina. He hopes to become a Physician Assistant.

Taylor Thomson ‘11 Taylor Thomson ’11 curled up with a good book for his project as he immersed himself in literature with sustained reading each day. He chose a “Reading & Writing” theme based on his affinity for post-modernist literature. “I had previously read some of the works of the genre, such as ‘Cat’s Cradle,’ by Kurt Vonnegut, and ‘1984,’ by George Orwell, so I felt that I had a basic grasp of the genre itself,” Taylor said. “When I was given the opportunity to spend two weeks working on essentially anything I wanted, I thought a case study in post-modernist literature would be exciting and interesting.” Taylor read five books over the course of two weeks by such authors as Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, and Vladimir Nabokov. “Doing a senior project that was interesting to me made my last few weeks of school more informative. I think that having a breadth of knowledge about any subject is a wonderful thing, because it promotes future learning. I hope future seniors will have as good an experience with the project as I did,” he said. Taylor will attend Davidson College in the fall.

Katie Sun ‘11 A trip to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival was the driving force behind Katie Sun’s ’11 project. Katie created a graphic novel and used sequential art to tell a story. “The festival inspired me to create my own graphic novel based on a cumulative analysis of my four years of high school,” Katie said. “It was a development of my own individuality. I portrayed myself as an antagonist without making myself a victim,” she adds. Katie dedicated the entire two weeks to the project, working in local cafes writing and scripting her story, and found the time to be more constructive than sitting in a classroom. “Pursuing something that you are genuinely interested in is much more productive and helped in deciding on future careers,” Sun said. Katie will attend NYU in the fall and hopes to major in philosophy with a minor in studio art.

Devon Kelly ‘11 Drawing on her experience from classes in psychology and studio art, Devon Kelley ’11 created a series of art pertaining to the mind and mental health. To prepare for the project Devon researched abnormal psychology and the characteristics of each brain hemisphere. “I decided that I was most interested in exploring contrast in relation to the mind, such as opposing personalities, moods, and realities,” Devon said. Devon also researched art therapy, Rorschach prints, the rest cure, and other artists who have approached the topic of the mind. “I was inspired by both artists who approached the topic that I was tackling, and artists who were personally affected by the topic such as Van Gogh, Pollack, Goy, and Munch,” she adds. Devon set very high expectations for herself and the success of her project. “I was able to be productive while doing something that I love, and that was why self-discipline was important; if I was unproductive and did not complete all that I hoped to, I would have been unhappy with myself,” Devon said. Devon will attend Eugene Lang College in the fall.

King Students Feel At Home in Versailles On Sunday, June 19, 12 US students began their 10-day journey through France. The cultural and language immersion trip included visits to Toulouse, Carcassonne, Nimes, Avignon, Versailles, and Paris, offering students an opportunity to experience the culture, cuisine, and splendor of the country. US French Teacher Marion Haymann enjoyed traveling with the young group and thought the trip was very successful. “The students had an authentic experience of French culture through a wide array of sites, tastes, and sounds. They were immersed in both urban and country settings, with a unique opportunity to apply and to improve their language skills,” she said. The group’s first stop was Toulouse where they enjoyed a walking tour of the city and explored Capitol Place and the Basilica of St. Sernin. After Toulouse, the students traveled by train to Carcassonne, Europe’s largest fortified city, still standing today. The students toured both the Chateau Contal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire before sitting down to dinner at a traditional French restaurant. Throughout the trip, the group sampled a variety of French cuisine from different regions, each characterized by its own distinct style. The following day the group set out on a 45-minute uphill hike to reach the ruins of the Chateau de Montségur, from which they took in a spectacular view of the countryside. The next stop was Gruissan, a resort town on the Mediterranean coast where Gerard Pozzi ’14 enjoyed the local beaches and considered it to be one highlight of the trip. “One of my favorite parts of the trip was going to the beach and swimming,” he said. Following the beach excursion in Gruissan, the group visited Nimes and toured the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct, and the Nimes Roman Arena. “The Roman arena in Nimes was very interesting. There was so much information to take in. We discovered new places every day and our Teachers and tour guides kept us engaged and interested,” Pozzi said. In Versailles, the students spent three days with host families. Rachel Cohen ’13 stayed with a family in Velizy, a small town two miles east of Versailles, and found the experience to be extremely helpful in perfecting her French. “The most beneficial part of the homestay was definitely practicing my French. The girl who was close to my age spoke very little English. At times it was difficult, but the experience contributed greatly to my knowledge of the language,” she said. US French Teacher Gilles Chosson noted that the host families were extremely delighted with the students and welcomed them back any time. “The response from the host families was extremely positive and we were very proud of the students. Some real intercultural friendships were born,” he said. The students’ journey concluded in Paris where they spent the last two days touring the medieval part of the city, admiring the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, and walking along the Champs-Elysées. This was the second trip to France for Rachel and, being older this time, it enabled her to appreciate the details of each city. “The architecture of the cities and villages is like no other, particularly that of Avignon. One thing about this beautiful city that sticks out in my mind is the historic opera houses and theaters, which are still used today. That is one of the many things that I love about France: it is a nation that puts its culturally rich and historic elements to modern use,” she said. For Desmond Hague ’14, the trip exceeded his expectations and he gained more than he had anticipated. “This trip to France was one of the best of my life. It really helped me understand the language and culture much better then I ever imagined I would,” he said.

Twelve Days in Greece and a Lifetime of Memories The physical beauty and archeological sites of Greece amazed a group of 28 US students as they participated in a 12-day cultural immersion trip this summer. The students, in Grades 9-12, connected with a reality that many of them have only seen thus far in their textbooks. The stories and photographs came alive in the ancient sites of Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Mystra, and Crete. US History Chair and head chaperone, Christos Galanopoulos, believes that the trip offers an invaluable experience that prepares students for their personal and pedagogical upbringings. “In the summer, Greece is like an intellectual workshop where people from all over the world come for cultural immersion. Greece is geographically small, yet so richly diverse in its landscape and culture that new experiences wait around almost every corner. This trip offers a hands-on education that will continue to grow and mature as these students do the same,” he said. The trip began in Athens where the group stayed three nights in a hotel at the foot of the Acropolis and toured the state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum, designed by the famous American architect Bernard Tschumi. The students marveled at the wonders of ancient and modern Athens while sampling traditional Greek cuisine. Nicole Tellini ’14 said, “Greece was so beautiful. My favorite part was visiting the Acropolis and our tour guide, Nico. He taught us so much and really made it an interesting experience.” Following their stay in Athens, the group traveled to Olympia, stopping for a day trip in Delphi, an historically significant site famous for the Oracle of Delphi. The journey offered magnificent

views and a unique perspective of the landscape. “We were on this winding road with a view of Aegean Sea on one side and you turn around to discover an amazing field of cypress trees. It would take a lifetime to experience all the beauty of Greece,” Galanopoulos said. The students then traveled on to Olympia, where they participated in a ceremonial run of the 100m dash at the birthplace of the Olympic Games. A wreath created from the branches of an olive tree crowned the champion. Another adventure awaited the students as they made their way to the medieval province of Mani, on the southern peninsula of the Peloponnese. They stayed in a traditional castle overlooking the harbor and explored dozens of caves, naturally decorated by formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The students also visited the medieval town of Mystra, which served as second capital to Constantinople during the Byzantine period and produced very significant intellectual culture. The students’ journeys concluded with a seven-hour overnight ferry ride and five nights in Crete, where they toured the island and visited the Minoan Palace of Knossos. The charming port of Chania, centered on a Venetian harbor, offered an array of shops and local crafts. It was the perfect place to purchase a keepsake from this unforgettable journey. Emily Green ’14 recommends the trip to all King students. “The Greece trip was an extraordinary experience. This was my first time in Europe and the world that I got to see was fantastic,” she said.

A Hometown Welcome for King Students in Spain Twenty US students joined Spanish Teacher Francisco Gracia Millán this summer as he returned to his hometown of Alicante, Spain, an historic Mediterranean port. The cultural and language immersion trip, for 10 days in June, also made stops in Madrid and Valencia, exploring the many cultural regions, cities, and beautiful beaches. Gracia enjoyed sharing his country’s history and traditions with the young group. “The students learned a lot by walking and observing the city. The first day in Madrid we walked for five hours,” he said. US English Teacher Helen Kweskin noted, “The students experienced the flavor of the city mostly by walking and talking to the people. We urged them to listen and speak the language throughout the entire trip.” Upon arriving in Madrid, the group toured the Royal Palace, the El Escorial Monastery, and the Prado Museum, where the students viewed the works of Velazquez, Goya, and El Greco. The group then traveled by high-speed train to Valencia, located on the Mediterranean coast, where they explored the Valencia Cathedral and climbed up the tower for a birds-eye view of the city. Michael Del Genio ’12 was particularly enriched by the connection he felt to his courses at King. “Everywhere we went, I was constantly making connections to the curriculum. At the Prado, I saw firsthand the paintings we had been studying in the second semester. In Segovia, we saw the famous Roman Aqueduct. We visited El Escorial and learned about the history of the Spanish monarchy. We had covered all of this in class and it was incredible to see it in person,“ he said.

In Segovia, students explored the Roman Aqueduct and the Segovia Castle. The final stop on the trip was Gracia’s hometown of Alicante. The group arrived in perfect time to experience the Las Hogueras Festival, (The Bonfires of Saint John), a summer solstice celebration and the most celebrated festival in the city. Erica Nicokiris ’12 described the trip as a “life-changing experience” and especially enjoyed the festival in Alicante. “The costumes and paper mache wooden statues were beautiful, and it was quite admirable to witness the people become so enthusiastic and passionate for this annual celebration,” she said. As word spread through the town of the King students’ visit, a local newspaper caught up with the group and interviewed them, in Spanish, about their experience. Del Genio told reporters, ”I am incredibly impressed with the unity and spirit that I can see and feel, for myself, among the residents of Alicante, and I am thrilled to be welcomed into the city at such a special time.” It proved to be a perfect finish to the trip of a lifetime. “It was very exciting for me to bring the students to my city and show them where I studied and lived,” Gracia said. Returning to Madrid for their flight home, the students spent their final day relaxing and reminiscing about their travels. Nicokiris described the trip as “a life-changing experience” and hopes to spend a semester abroad during college. “The architecture of the buildings in Spain was breathtaking. They were so authentic and the details of each building were mesmerizing,” she said. Del Genio was equally impressed with the trip. “I felt that I formed a special bond with the country and its people through the language. This, for me, was the one defining element that I took away from Spain,” he said.

Campaign Performance KING

Capitalizing on Excellence: A Campaign for King There have been many dramatic changes on campus since the beginning of this Campaign. A brand new turf field is now home to the Viking football, soccer, and lacrosse teams; the north field has been completely refurbished as the home of the field hockey team; and of course, the fabulous Performing Arts Center is quickly becoming an important hub of campus life. After years of staging amazing performances in a not-so-amazing space in the Upper School, our Performing Arts Program will now be able to shine in the facility it has long deserved. With a theater that seats over 400, an ample stage, dressing rooms with mirrors and lights, a green room, a well-equipped scene shop, storage for costumes, an expansive lobby, enormous classroom space, offices for Faculty, private lesson rooms, and a beautiful courtyard that connects the building to the Upper School, King students have a wonderful space for their daily use. The support of the King community has been tremendous over the last several years, and this past year was no exception. The community has continued to support this project despite the overall economic landscape, and we are truly grateful. The 2011-2012 academic year certainly promises to bring new challenges and exciting opportunities to our students. We appreciate your role in making this possible. Thank you. The success of the Parents’ Association – the events and parent programming it sponsors, and the fundraising initiatives it leads – would not be possible without the tireless effort and dedication of so many individuals. We would like to recognize those parents who assumed leadership positions within the PA organization during the 2010-2011 school year, and thank them for the difference they have made at King. Spring Benefit: Fiesta Del Rey! Fiesta Del Rey, A Benefit for King, was held on May 21, 2011, at the Hyatt Hotel in Greenwich, CT. Together with the Advancement Office, the Parents’ Association put together a spectacular evening, featuring super silent and live auctions. With over 340 guests, and enormous support from the King community, Fiesta Del Rey raised over $330,000 in net proceeds, which will benefit King’s overall scholarship and financial aid efforts. King is truly grateful to all of the members of the Spring Event Committee, particularly, Michelle Mauboussin and Alisa Savitz, the event Co-Chairs, who spent countless hours organizing this incredible event.
