Standing Ovation!
Alumni, parents, students, and Faculty gathered in a sea of blue and gold sweatshirts to cheer the Vikings on to victory.
The King community, past and present, gathered last month for Homecoming 2011, fueling a momentous weekend filled with enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment. Viking pride, on the field and in the gymnasium, shined brightly during a perfect fall day on campus. The LS courtyard was filled with a variety of specialty tents offering something for everyone. The School Store tent had record-breaking sales of spirit gear and the LS Bake Sale tent drew crowds all day for hot coffee and delicious home baked goods. As always, Mrs. Lineberry’s amazing candy “sushi” was a big hit! Viking fans were brought back in time at the MS General Store where home-baked apple pie, wonderful sauces, jams, and spices were top sellers. The sound of drums and horns spilled from the Performing Arts tent, and the smoke from the grill at the PA Food tent drifted across campus, luring visitors in for hamburgers and hot dogs. Most students under the age of 10 were hidden behind painted faces of Spiderman and butterflies, as they enjoyed the inflatable rides in the Kids’ Korner. Mary Holtz, Homecoming Chair for the Parents’ Association, said, “Homecoming is one of the only events that brings together the entire King community, Staff, students, parents, and Alumni. It was a wonderful day to be on campus and share the Viking spirit. The day was a great success because of the hard work, dedication, and talents of so many wonderful volunteers.” The Vikings battled Greens Farms Academy in a thrilling line-up of athletic events, including boys’ and girls’ soccer, field hockey,
cross country, and volleyball, and finished the day with a win over Kingswood-Oxford in football. The South Campus Stadium Complex was filled to capacity as Alumni, parents, students, and Faculty gathered in a sea of blue and gold sweatshirts to cheer the Vikings on to victory. Tanner Abel ‘12 watched his classmates compete before taking the field with the Viking football team. “As a football player, it was nice to see my friends from other sports play and really feel the school spirit. I was very pleased with the turnout for the football game, playing in front of your peers as well as those who graduated in the past who came just to see you. There is no better feeling,” he said. Alumni dating back to the Class of 1934 returned to campus and enjoyed guided tours of the new Performing Arts Center. There have been tremendous improvements over the years, but for many the memories, friendships, and Viking spirit remains unchanged. Devere Jones ’98 attended Friday night’s alumni event and Saturday’s games. “Homecoming 2011, yet again, was a success due to the school spirit of not only the students, but also of the parents and Alumni. I believe the changes that the School has experienced over the past few years, especially the addition of the new Performing Arts Center, reflect the passion that everyone associated with King Low Heywood Thomas, past and present, has for the School,” he said.

Career Day

speakers are living their passions to help other people.
Homecoming Weekend got off to a great start as the Alumni Association welcomed back two Alumni to speak at our annual Career Day. The first alumni presenter, Taylor Gramps ’03, spoke about her transition from King to college, and her career in the performing arts. Taylor currently is working for A.R.T./New York, the Tony Award-winning service and advocacy organization for New York City’s 300 non-profit theaters. Jake Murphy ’03 also spoke about his transitions and encouraged current King students to explore their interests and try different avenues until they find their passions. Jake works as a freelance photographer in New York City. His passion for photography brought him to India, where he developed a close relationship with the people of the country and, ultimately, led him to his current mission called Dirt Floors and Stonewalls. It is a non-profit he created to raise awareness of the state of public schools in third-world countries. Both alumni speakers are living their passions to help other people. Their experiences at King helped shape who they are today. That message was clear and received well by students. After the presentation, students asked questions and connected with the Alumni in an intimate question-and-answer segment that made the start of Homecoming Weekend very special.

Alumni Reception Friday night of Homecoming is a special evening when Alumni from all class years gather for a night of reminiscing, reconnection, food, drinks, and fun. The School and the Alumni Board unveiled the new Performing Arts Center to Alumni during the reception and treated them to the first performances in the building – a comedy show starring Colin Cosell ’97 and Chris O’Neill and Paul Valenti of The Chris and Paul Show. During the reception in the Performing Arts Center lobby, Director of Admission Carrie Salvatore gave an intimate tour of the building for Alumni. Alumni saw the instrumental and choral rooms, dance studio, private lesson spaces, set design studio, dressing rooms, and the theater from the perspective of the stage and audience.
Victoria Chamberlin ’01, who starred in many productions during her years on campus, toured the building and said she was “floored and amazed by the facility,” and how it brought back so many memories. After the reception, the Alumni Board welcomed fellow Alumni into the theater for the performance. Director of Alumni Affairs Mike Little ’02 introduced Colin Cosell ’97 to the stage to perform his stand-up act. Alumni were also entertained by the award-winning sketch comedy of The Chris and Paul Show. Alumni Board member Nicole Kenaga ‘02 said, “The show was great way to showcase the Performing Arts Center and share a few laughs with friends.”

Alumni Brunch – Two Former Headmasters Honored
was a time to reflect
After the excitement of Friday’s events, Saturday morning’s Alumni Brunch was a time to reflect and honor two former King Headmasters, Mr. Vernon A. Dwelle and Mr. Richard K. Jackson. Street signs were unveiled, to be placed on campus as a permanent honor to these two men who were instrumental in the growth of the King School and its legacy.

Mr. Dwelle began teaching English and History at King School in 1914, and in 1932 became the School’s sixth Headmaster. Mr. Dwelle, owner of the School at that time, transferred ownership to create a non-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Trustees, to make certain that King would exist and provide an excellent education for boys long after his retirement. During his 38-year tenure at King, he increased the enrollment of the undergraduate body, and elevated the scholastic rating of the School greatly. Mr. Jackson was the Headmaster of King School 1957-1972. During his time as Headmaster he rebuilt the School twice, moved the
School to its present location, and built King’s first gymnasium. He was constantly looking for ways to improve the School and expand the number of opportunities for its students. Mr. Jackson made a significant impact on hundreds of young men: in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in their lives. Both families of the honored Headmasters attended the brunch and were extremely grateful and honored that Mr. Dwelle and Mr. Jackson were receiving this wonderful honor. Jim Dwelle Halliday, grandson of Mr. Dwelle, said, “It is truly a great day for the Dwelles and the Jacksons. Thank you for honoring my grandfather.” Richard Jackson ‘66, son of Mr. Jackson, expressed his gratitude for the great honor: “I would like to thank all of the (King) personnel for their collective efforts in making this day a reality.”
