Last year students from more than 20 different schools attended Summer Institute. Children from as far away as Colorado and Italy participated in either an academic class or camp. Summer Institute is located on King’s 34-acre North Stamford campus. The school is easily accessible from both the Merritt Parkway and I-95. See you this summer!

Lower School Children entering Grades 1-5 are invited to attend our exciting camp, which blends the fun of summer with the challenge and invigoration of an academic environment. Activities include sports, arts, field trips, and special assemblies. Each week, we will have a guest teacher come in to teach his/her “summer specialty.” Sample theme weeks from last year included Spectacular Science; Peace, Love and Yoga; and Land of LEGOs! Our camp is designed with all grade levels in mind and has a program geared to each age group’s physical, emotional, and intellectual needs. The Fun Camp is located in the Lower School building.

l o o h c S e l d Mid Summer Institute’s Middle School Program offers students entering Grades 6-8 the opportunity to build their core academic skills and explore new subjects that prepare them for entrance into the Upper School. At an age of many transitions, Middle School students feel more connected and invested in their learning when they discover the talents that motivate them, activities that delight them, and Teachers who understand them. The Middle School Program offers two three-week sessions. Classes typically run for one or two hours per day. Students may register for one or more courses per day, for either or both of the three-week sessions. Classes are held in the Middle School building.

Study Skills

Money Matters

Students learn strategies designed to increase their comfort levels in the academic environment. They learn to organize their school materials, take notes effectively, read and comprehend textbooks, set academic goals, determine priorities, manage time effectively, and maximize their productivity in preparing for tests. Cooperative (group) learning skills are also discussed. These study skills are adaptable to any academic setting. 8:00-8:55 a.m. Tuition: $465

This course is a hands-on and fun approach to understanding personal finance and investing. Students learn important economic principles in a relaxed environment with an emphasis on real-word examples. 10:00-10:55 a.m. Tuition: $465

Pre-Algebra This introductory level course emphasizes fundamental skills necessary to be successful in algebra. Students are taught in a casual and productive environment where they learn at their own pace. Concepts are taught using several different methods in order to address the needs of a variety of learners. 8:00-9:55 a.m. Tuition: $680

This course offers an introductory study of the Spanish language. It comprises knowledge of present and future tenses and vocabulary of basic life needs. Typical classroom activities include conversations, skits, online exercises, and writing of short paragraphs and descriptions with the aid of visuals. This course provides a foundation for remedial beginner students or for those interested in solidifying Level 1 of the language. 10:00-11:55 a.m. Tuition: $680

Writer’s Craft This class explores the expository writing process. The first part of the course focuses on the formation of the paragraph, with a topic sentence, body, and conclusion. Students are then guided through the process of developing an idea, organizing their thoughts, writing, editing, and rewriting. Mastery of these skills helps transition to the composition of an essay. 9:00-9:55 a.m. Tuition: $465

Upper School Summer Institute’s Upper School Program offers students entering Grades 9-12 the opportunity to explore new subjects, or to advance in core academic or artistic subjects. Students who are serious about their academic and personal growth will find our intensive college preparatory courses, situated in a relaxed environment, the perfect way to excel this summer. The Upper School Program offers two three-week sessions, with new classes starting on June 25 and again on July 16. Classes typically run two to three hours per day. Students may register for one or more courses per day, for either or both of the three-week sessions. For students looking for a more complete educational experience, Summer Institute also offers six-week classes for credit.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ART FOR BEGINNERS (CREDIT CLASS) King US students can take this course for credit in satisfying their graduation requirement. This course consists of a series of problems and projects designed to teach skills and techniques leading to the understanding and application of the elements of art and the principles of design to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional images. Examination of the art and artists of different periods and cultures further enhances these basic principles and elements. (Pass/Fail Grading) 8:00-9:55 a.m. Tuition: $680 SESSION 1 ONLY

SAT Verbal Preparation Students review all aspects covered on the verbal section of the SAT. With many opportunities for practice, students become more comfortable with the test, their skills, and the techniques necessary to improve their scores. 10:00-11:55 a.m. Tuition: $790

Expository Writing – The A,B,C’s of a good essay Students learn the basics of good writing, including grammar. Each student writes and revises a personal essay and a literary essay under the close supervision of the Instructor. They learn that every word they use should be scrutinized, that the best writing wastes no words and is based in the specific, that they must “listen” to what they write, and that a conclusion is not a summary. They learn skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. 10:00-11:55 a.m. Tuition: $680

Time management, executive functioning and organizational skills are addressed, as are how to prepare for tests and exams, note-taking, homework and project strategies, reading and listening for main ideas and important details, and planning and goal setting. 10:00-11:55 a.m. Tuition: $680

SIX WEEK CREDIT CLASSES June 25-August 3 pre-calculus This course is designed for highly motivated and very able mathematics students who wish to receive advanced credit in Pre-Calculus. This course is preparation for Calculus, but not necessarily AP Calculus. Students must have their own graphing calculators and bring them to class each day. Classes are taught using a TI-83 calculator. 8:00-10:55 a.m. Tuition: $1,630

Algebra 1 This course is a traditional first-year study of elementary algebraic concepts and their applications. Topics covered include linear equations and inequalities, system of equations, graphing, direct variation, operations with rational and irrational expressions, radical equations, the quadratic formula, quadratic functions and equations, and factoring. This course provides a foundation for Algebra 2. 8:00-10:55 a.m. Tuition: $1,630

algebra 2/trigonometry This course is a continuation and extension of Algebra 1. The course includes topics on rational exponents, complex numbers, sequences and series, inequalities, and systems of linear equations in two and three variables. The TI-83 or TI-84 is used throughout the course. 8:00-10:55 a.m. Tuition: $1,630

physics General Physics is an algebra-based physics course; it covers Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, waves and optics, and modern physics. Students gain both a deeper appreciation of the concepts of Physics and additional problemsolving skills. Hands-on or computer-based labs help students understand the concepts covered in the course and deepen students’ appreciation of the scientific method. 8:00-10:55 a.m. Tuition: $1,630

Perf New this year, Summer Institute is excited to introduce two different Theater Camps. These four-week camps will be held in King’s stunning new Performing Arts Center. Each camp promises to be a wonderful experience for anyone interested in performing on stage.

High School Musical Students explore, rehearse, and perform a production of “High School Musical.” Students develop vocal, acting, and dance skills throughout the four-week process. The program culminates with a live performance for family and friends. Instructors: Terry Hess and Brian Miller Grades: 4-8 Dates: June 25-July 20 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Tuition: $900

Summer Shakespeare Students explore, rehearse, and perform the worlds of Shakespeare. The program has classroom activities, and both instructional and rehearsal components, culminating in a live performance for family and friends.
