Kingsmen 70 reflects a more in formal approach than that of past years In the hopes of reflecting a more accurate picture of the en thusiasms and daily life at King. As you read through this book, we of the staff hope you enjoy it and its goals. Personally, I would like to convey my thanks to the staff and all of you who have supported the yearbook throughout the year. James McCready Editor-in-Chief

KINGSMEN 70

KING SCHOOL STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT

SENIOR DEDICATION: There was no discussion as to whom to dedicatet his yearbook. It was a unanimous deci sion before it was even asked. Mr. Aaron Hess has been counsellor and friend to our class since we were in the Ninth Grade. His work as liaison between the administration and the Senior Class this year has enabled harmony to exist. His advice on cer tain matters has been invaluable to the Class. On behalf of the Seniors, our deepest thanks, good wishes and this dedication. Aaron Hess

STAFF DEDICATION: As Dean of Stu dents this year, Mr. Dodd has made much progress in instituting new rules pleasing to both the Classes and the Ad ministration. His aid to the Student Council, this Yearbook and the Senior Class has been invaluable. The staff of Kingsmen 70 feels he deserves special commendation. Thank you, Mr. Dodd.

A VOTE OF THANKS: James M. Coyle. Due to the untiring efforts of one man, the Class of 1970 is sending everyone of its members on to college next fall. Though only a few Seniors have bene fite d from his teaching, we have all found his guidance and counselling con cerning every facet of our education in valuable. We can only express our thanks in the knowledge that Mr. Coyle will be here to lend assistance to Seniors in years to come. Thank you, Mr. Coyle, from the Class of 70.

We were riding along in a car on a plateau in Colorado going to Aspen. We saw something up ahead on the roadside. It was an eagle, the symbol of American freedom. Feathers rumpled, standing in a dirty Patch of snow, hitch hiking.

“ Deep in the human unconsciousness is a pervasive need for a logical Universe that makes sense. But the real Universe is always one step beyond Logic.

“ Greatness is a transitory experience. It is never consistant” “ No place at all for bravery in that war Nor mark where one might make a stand Nor use for eye or hand to discover and reach the enemy, Hidden in boundless air.” “ We were old school chums Many experiences ago we had departed He going his way, and I following my beat. We were now dining and reliving together For he had a good life, But somehow mine had been mine.” “ O seas of Caladan O people of our Duke Citadel of Leto fallen Fallen Forever!”

I met a seer. He held in his hands The book of wisdom. “ Sir,” I addressed him, “ Let me read.” “ Child” he began. “ Sir” I said. “ Think not that I am a child, For already I know much Of that which you hold; Aye, much.” He smiled. Then he opened the book And held it before me. Strange that I should have grown so suddenly blind.

My chest has a great monster in it that will not let me talk or breath or study or be the least bit happy. I am not well and you are just not fair to make me work. And if you tell me one more time that all my illness is psychological, I shall psychologically succumb to it and fall lifeless to the ground.

Last year someone else had math in this classroom. For seventy-five whole years kids have sat at these twenty-one desks and solved equations. Probably thousands of kids have flunked this very course So that’s why I was writing on the desk. I just wanted to let whoever comes around next year know that me and the others were here, too.

The Varsity Football team was plagued this year by a few untimely injuries. Both Wesley Wubbenhorst and co-captain Bruce Kough were injured in the loss to New Mil ford High School, and were greatly missed the next week in the loss to Brunswick. This loss cost the team the league cham pionship. The 4-2-1 record was representa tive of the season. The team won two very hard fought games over Montclair and arch-rival St. Lukes, plus two easy wins over Rye and St. Peters. The tie with Hackley was partially due to Injuries to co-cap tains Bill Brennan and Bruce Kough. The team received excellent play from many individuals which is indicated by five mem bers of the team, co-captains Bill Brennan and Bruce Kough, Morgan Ames, Richard Reese and Peter Zaccagnino, being named to the all-conference team.

Again Varsity Soccer dominated overall league play, picked up their third consecutive league title and, above all. a well-earned undefeated season. The superior talents of coach Anthony Pegg were apparent and spoke for themselves. As for the players under him, their desire to win was only half the season’s battle. William Orr and James McCready. in their third Varsity year, captained the squad effectively, holding the team’s spirit high. Most of the positions had to be filled with newer players and last year's Junior Varsity. The entire squad can be proud of its twenty-one straight wins. The squad consisted of William Orr, James McCready, Peter Bud, Marc Goldschmidt, Peter Shumaker, Stephen Dunbar. Christopher Roth, Peter Swartz, Gregory Weed. Carl Soderberg, Robert Tackman, Kurt Carlson and Coach Anthony Pegg.

VARSITY BASKETBALL: Coach Wayne Flood. James Kirkland, John Geddes. Richard Reese, Peter Little, Morgan Ames, David Bond. Peter Wallingford, William Orr Center: Thomas Hodgson, Captain.

King School once again has a championship basketball team. The team has totally dominated the court against all league opponents, smothering them with tight defenses and a potent offense. Why this year? David Bond and John Geddes are two important reasons. They have filled the gaps left from last year and their sharp passing gave the three other players the high percentage shots. Cap tain Tom Hodgson has been able to move around more for the open shot. Dick Reese came through with his finest season and controlled the boards with Geddes. Billy Orr rounds out the starting five. He is a fine dribbler and great passer. The bench has gotten a great deal of playing time this year and have looked impressive especially Chris Ames, Peter Wallingford, and Morgan Ames with Jim Kirkland, Peter Little, and Paul DeLeo looking towards next year for starting positions.

VARSITY WRESTLING: Front Row: Paul Savoie, William Fox, Richard Moskowitz: co-captain, Bradley Longfield. Thomas Doggett. James Rubin. David Winniok. Standmg: Aaron Hess Scott Vczina, Gregory Flagg, Douglas Jennings, Stephen Dunbar. David Peltz, Charles Krulis, Peter Swartz. Carl Soderberg. Scott Morris manager.

The 1969-1970 Wrestling season was a disappointing one in terms of statistics. Much of this was due to the loss of eight under-graduate lettermen from last year's fine team. In fact, only two boys who wrestled regularly last year returned. This year's team finished with a 3-5 dual meet record. It was seventh in a ten team field at the tournament. Only co-captain Richard Moskowitz. James Rubin and Brad Longfield won medals. The loss of co-captain Steven Dunbar hurt at the tournament. A group of loyal Juniors should lead the team to a better record next year.

FRESHMAN WRESTLING: Front Row: Richard Jaffe. Scott Michael. Steven Apicella, Neil Sullivan. Donald Jackson. William de Jonge, Thomas Wormser, Dudley Olcott. Second Row: Byron Drummond. Varsity Baseball is looking forward to its best season ever. With returning lettermen at eight positions there’s no question that this team has fine potential. Dick Reese and Bill Brennan will patrol left and center fields for the third year in a row, while Bob Daum, Bruce Kough, Jim Koslinski and Captain Steve Cary will work together in the infield for the second year in a row. Pete Zaccagnino will do the catching while Brennan and Tom Hodgson will split the pitching duties. Dick Burt and Jim McCready will be the only newcomers, Burt playing right field and McCready filling in as a pinch hitter and utility fielder. The team has a great amount of both natural talent and experience and should have a fine season.

Letter to Doug Tillson D e ar Doug: Six years ago, we didn’t know each other very well. You were fresh out of Norwalk Tech, had done a little drafting, weren’t sure where your future was. But you were bright and ambitious, We took a chance and hired you. We were Stamford’s largest employer and get ting bigger, spawning new products, making now jobs. You wanted a future . . - but in a big com pany. a guy could get stuck in a dead-end job and forgotten. Still, there was our training offer— learn the ropes, pick your own field, move ahead a t your own speed. So you took a chance. Today, we know each other better. "Inventive . . . ingenious . . . persistent" your boss calls you. With a knack for solving problems, getting people on the team. That’s why you’ve In come one of our best (and youngest) foremen, supervising 42 production people at PR’s fastgrowing Copier Products Division in Norwalk. Tn these six years, you’ve learned that when we said “training opportunity,” we meant it. Right now, we have an even broader range of jobs, more training opportunities than when you began. Not just on-the-job stuff, but real classroom instruc tion, all the way from machine operation and tech nical training to toolmaking, modelmaking and design. Why do we train people? Simply because their skills and contributions are the real key to the company’s success. That’s something we’ve both learned. So thanks. Doug, for taking a chance with us. It’s worked out fine. And if you’d like to do us another favor . . . pass the word along that PR’s doors in Norwalk and Stamford are still wide open to ambitious young men and women who want to learn and grow on the job. We’ll help them shape their future—if they’ll help us shape ours.
