To the Class of 1980 As you have progressed through King School, your class has been recognized as exceptional and will be remembered happily in the coming years. That means personalities, as well as accomplishments and future promise, have made an impression on the school. Four of you have been at King since First or Second Grade. Virtually the whole class has been together right through the Upper School. Partly because of that common experience, and partly because of your friendliness and good humor as individuals, you have developed a real sense of unity and an unusually close rapport with the faculty and other students. You have been academically distinguished, with the largest group in accelerated programs of any recent class. You have privided leadership, enthusiasm and skill in athletics. You have not only participated actively in extra-curricular activities but have also taken charge when your talent and commitment were needed. Finally, you have been close outside of school. Seldom have I known a class with so many individuals who were willing to give unselfishly of time and energy to help and support others. Students throughout the school know this and have benefited from your generosity of spirit. The Class of 1980 has earned the respect, affection, and esteem of their school. We will miss you. We wish you well in all the challenges and joys of the future.

Senior Dedication It is often said that the small, private structure intrinsic to King School fosters deep relationships between teachers and students. In the eyes of the Class of 1980, a class which has grown together with King and all its faculty members, this statement stands proven. However, over the many years that we have been together as a class, we have become especially close to one member of the faculty. Mr. Benjamin Van Vechten has, for so long, been our mentor. His warm personality, his under standing, and his care for our class have engendered our deep respect for him. His concern for our welfare both as a class and as individuals has led us to harbour a powerful sensitivity for his feelings. Mr. Van Vechten has done a great deal to guide us through our most difficult, trying times, and we can only hope that in return we have somehow helped him through his. Early in the fall, Mr. Van Vechten called a class meeting and left us with a message that we will always remember. He told us that he felt a strong alliance with our class; we were, in essence, “his class”. In response, we would like to say that throughout the years Mr. Van Vechten has been “our teacher”, and more. Our relationship with this man has gone far beyond being one of teacher to student: he is our dear friend. “Mr. V”, best wishes and forever thanks. — the Class of 1980

Peter Assheton Mitchell 1962-1979 Years at King 1973-1977

I wish my son that you had not gone; I wish my son that you could have stayed; I wish you were home in bed asleep; But the night was dark And you had a rendezvous to keep. You wanted to walk before you could stand; Then you wanted to run before you could walk; You were never afraid of the daring leap; But the night was dark And you had a rendezvous to keep.

I know that your yearnings were incredibly strong; That your wants and your needs were uniquely your own; And your feelings were real and honest and deep; But the night was dark And you had a rendezvous to keep. I love you my son for all that you were; I love you my son for all that you weren't; But I am consoled and I shall not weep; Even though the night was dark And you had a rendezvous to keep.

The smell of Spring is near and the sounds of birds singing is deafining It is a sign of beginnings in Nature but is is a series of endings for me. I shall have to leave my friends soon and all those that I love, all that I have accomplished in a lifetime will be shattered in one day. Through they try, my family can not understand the torment that goes through me each day but I do not cry out for help for I seek no pity but only love and truth till the end of my days. “Best Congratulations to my special few of the Class of 1980, and my special one: Todd.”
