KLHT KALEIDOSCOPE VOLUME I 1989

KING DEDICATION DEDICATION

Mrs. Elizabeth Karlan became a part of our lives in September of 1982. She was a nice woman. However, as middle schoolers, we had to put her to the test. She was as quick to help us find a book as she was to send us to the study hall. Yet, no m atter w hat we did, from jumping off of the second floor balcony to pushing books on an unsuspecting victim in the next aisle, she always forgave us. Then, when we entered high school, we came to a startling realization; we realized th at Mrs. Karlan was not really always trying to get us into trouble. We don’t know if it was the fact th a t we were more m ature or th at we had discovered th at her son was Peter Karlan, and thus she deserved the reverence of a minor deity for fear of upsetting Coach Karlan. Mrs. Karlan has helped us in many ways. She has not charged us for the Xerox machine, she has guided us through the bowels of our library, and more importantly, she has helped us realize th at discipline is necessary to achieve success. Once we entered high school, we saw how middle schoolers behaved and understood th at she was only trying to make gentlemen out of w hat was, more often than not, very raw m aterial. Mrs. Karlan, the Class of 1989 salutes you and bids you farewell. Sincerely, The Class of 1989

A Toast You are there when we need you, need you the most. And won’t back down from us, so here is a toast. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for all th at you’ve done. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for all of the fun. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for being a friend. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for being there till the end. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for being who you are. Thank-you, Mrs. Payne, for helping us wish upon a star. We appreciate your guidance more than you’ll ever know. And for reminding us never to let go. Love, The Class of 1989

KLHT’S TOGETHERNESS IS A TOGETHERNESS. The class of 1989 chose this word as the theme for the yearbook because it is what has made King and Low-Heywood Thomas so special to us. Togetherness has always been a special feeling in each school, but this year was different because the two schools joined together, giving new meaning to the word. Here at KLHT we are part of a team, a very special team. It is a football player carrying a kindergartener on his shoulders during the walk-a-thon, or a father and son playing baseball together in their annual game, or a teacher and student discussing their vacations, or the team rallying around a player who just missed a shot, or a seventh grader teaching a pre-kindergartener how to use scissors, or the students cheering even louder at the talent show for a nervous perform er who hits a sour note, or the boys soccer team coming out to support the girls field hockey team, or a teacher playing the trombone in the school band, or the girls and hoys shopping in Ottawa together on their senior trip—memories like these are what we will take away with us when we leave, and w hat will keep us together even when we are apart. -Class of 1989

WALKATHON â– WALK WAI

)

On Friday, October 14, the members of KLHT had an all school vvalk-a-thon to raise money for the United Way. Although this was the event’s second year, it was still a first. It was the first year th at all of the students from both schools participated. Senior girls walked hand-in-hand with pre-kindergarteners and the Senior boys carried Kindergarteners on their shoulders. Once again the Walk-a-thon was preceded by a pep rally and followed by a picnic and enjoyed by everyone.

LK WALK WALK WALK

THE OTTAWA EXPERIENCE At 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning/ We left KLHT while others were snoring. As we crossed the border, the coaches announced/ That their names “Bob" and “Lric pronounced.

could now be

Twelve hours later we pulled into town,/ To the Chateau Laurier — fancy all round. The first night was calm, the walls intact,/ The chaperones even got some sleep, in fact. We thought Dave Masotti's temper was bad,/ Until we saw Coach Kweskin get really mad. The rains came down as we stood around,/ Andrea's boyfriend was nowhere to be found. We changed our plans to another boat,/ But by that time we were thoroughly soaked! Doug, Read, and Jeff began to “dip,”/ Which made Cathy and Helen feel really sick. Eric the Red had gone to bed,/ He awoke to forty kids hanging over his head. Evening's French dinner — a marathon affair — / The lights went out, the candles did flare. Second night in the rooms, those doors kept flapping,/ No chance tonight of the chaperones napping! Hans and Frans got lost that night/ And Jason said, with great insight: “Isn't this your worst nightmare/ To be left with the total care Of 42 teens and 2 wandering lifters?”/ (The only word to rhyme with “lifters” is “drifters.”) On the third day, the Mayor spoke,/ The tour guides spoke, the lawyers spoke,/ And at 4 p.m., Bob Simon awoke. ■Jamey never made it to his room, we discovered,/ While Bob and Eric played FBI undercover. But the hit of the evening, by far the best,/ Were Romano and Epstein’s padded chests, Tight skirts, make-up, and flirting with all,/ As they pranced up and down the hall. Well, despite what you might think from this ditty,/ That this Ottawa trip was really a pity, What made this trip so very FINE,/ Was the MARVELOUS CLASS OF ’89! Respectfully submitted (abridged), Cathy Mishkin and Helen Kweskin (exhausted chaperones)

TALENT SHOW

The Talent Show truly brought out the spirit in each of us. There were more performances than ever before and a wide variety of acts. Mrs. Ostrow and Boo did a wonderful job in making this year’s “Come Catch Our Stars” a great success.

r

KLHT Sweeps Homecoming ’88 Homecoming this year was marked with even more excitement than usual. While Senior Dave Masotti continued his hairstyling tradition, KLHT began its tradition of victory. The Day’s festivities commenced with a Pep Rally. A new rendition of "The Hippy Hippy Shake" by the cheerleaders quickly roused the crowd. Each of the Student Council Presidents, Jessica Spelke and Jason Konidaris, entered the scene and helped the crowd to “catch the spirit" which was to run throughout Homecoming. Next to come out onto the floor were the sports teams. Their excitement ran like electricity down on to even the youngest student. By the time that Jess and Jason had officially ended the Pep Rally, our appetites were whetted for the next day's activities. Volleyball kicked off the sports competition that Saturday, October 29th. The girls were very pumped for the game and this the spectators soon were drawn into. Though the match was very close at first, our team proved superior and topped the opponent, 3-1. Field Hockey started right after the finish of the volleyball game. The team knew that they had a hard act to follow and psyched each other to keep their spirits up. Blessed with an incredibly responsive crowd, the girls fought a tough battle and finished with an exemplary 1-0 victory. Spirit permeated the atmosphere and poured on over to the soccer game. The crowd’s support aided the team in its struggle versus St. Luke’s. Despite the advantage of an early lead, the guys continued playing with zealous intensi ty. The 3-0 shut-out was something to be proud of.

Football, the final game, served to clench KLHT’s Homecoming fest. Defi nitely ready for a tough game, a frenzied turn-out backed the team. No sooner had the game begun than the Vikings jumped out into a dominant position. The tide turned, however, as Luke’s gained a small lead. The Vikings kept their optimism and rallied to a superb victory making a field goal with a mere 34 seconds remaining on the clock. The crowds then dispersed. Seniors, alumni, and parents adjourned to a tent outside of the Headmasters House on the King Campus. There, many past students socialized with old friends and teachers, marvelling at the wonder ful KLHT atmosphere. In the evening, the entire school body celebrated the day’s success with a dance in Dwelle Hall. Bernie Edward’s professional D.J. style caused every one to get into the dancing spirit. The festivities culminated with the naming of the Homecoming King, Jamey Peters, and the Homecoming Queen, Jessica Spelke. Without a doubt, the overall success of Homecoming ’88 launched a trend of victory that continued on.

Walking the United Way b y K a r e n D 'A m u o n o

On October 7 King & LowHeywood Thomas School partici pated in a WALK-A-THON that covered 10 kilmeters (6.2 miles). The proceeds from the WALK-ATHON will benefit the United Way as well as student activities such as P o l P o u r r i , the yearbook, and T h e C h r o n i c l e . Part of the money will also be set aside for a scholarship fund. For the students from the LHT Campus, the WALK-A-THON re placed the annual chocolate sale, which served as the school’s fund raiser last year. In addition to the health benefits of walking as op posed to selling chocolate, the WALK-A-THON gave the stu dents an opportunity to join to gether in an event in which their personal efforts and motivation were essential. The WALK-A-THON of a year ago met with such enthusiasm and success that the faculty, as well as the students, were willing to go for it again. Joining with the students from the Low-Heywood Thomas Cam pus were those from the King Campus. Last year, when the two schools were not yet consolidated, the WALK-A-THON was an LHT

fund-raiser, and did not involve King. This year, as a result of the consolidation, King also partici pated in the WALK-A-THON, and their participation raised an important issue. King and LHT are now one student body and in events such as this, they must function as one. In the future both campuses will take part in the planning of school events and related discussions will be held between the two campuses. On the morning of the WALKA-THON, the entire student body and the faculty met in the LHT gym to receive instructions and to get “psyched” for the trek that was ahead. The students then gathered by class in the LHT circle to set free 500 balloons that offictallv opened the 1988 WALK-A-THON. A route had been marked that went through the Italian Center, back onto the LHT Campus, and then through the King Campus, with the participants eventually returning to the starting point. After the initial lap, which the Kindergarteners also walked, two more laps had to be completed. The amount of money that was raised was dependent upon the amount the students’ sponsors pledged per kilometer or per lap.

The class that raised the most money will be rewarded with one week of no-uniform days. The class that finished second will be given a three-day break from the uniform, and the class that finished third will receive one no-uniform day. This year at KLHT has been dubbed “Catch the Spirit” vear, and the WALK-A-THON 'pro vided an atmosphere that fostered this theme. Karyn Komfeld and Lisa Policastro, as well as fac ulty members, made special ef forts to insure the success of the fund-raiser. By paying attention to such de tails as marking the route, making sure the balloons were ready, and setting up water tables, which were run by the Cross Country team, the day went smoothly and gave the students the opportunity to develop and renew friendships. Mrs. Mishkin expressed her positive feelings when she asked, “W hat better way to create friend ships or to meet someone new?” Experiences such as the WALKA-THON are key to KLHT be cause they give students and faculty alike the incentive to try out new ideas that will allow the school community to grow.

KLHT Initiates Pre-Kindgergarten _____ Class_____ This year, there is a new and very young addition to KLHT, The Pre-Kindergarten. The coedu cational class of 17 4 and 5-vearold children is being taught by Mrs. Megrue and her assistant. Mrs. Brough. The Pre-K class begins each morning at 8:15 and ends at 12:00 p.m.; however, twice a week there is an extended day, which lasts until 2:00 p.m. What Mrs. Megrue hopes to provide in her class is a happy, fun, learning atmosphere in which her students can feel good about themselves and gain social experi ence with other students. In her opinion, the Pre-K will add enthusiasm and energy to KLHT as a whole. She also be lieves that it will be a good experi ence for the older students to work with the Pre-K students. The addition of a Pre-K class can be viewed as a positive step in the direction of expansion. According to Mrs. Cesare, “The demographics indicated that there was a population at that level that would need schooling." and this is why KLHT has begun this program.

The Beginning of the End

b y J a s o n K o n id a r is

The current year will officially mark the end of separation. To both Boards of Trustees this separation once meant the separation of finances; to faculty, the separation of classes. W hat the students of the now King & Low-Heyw ood T hom as School must deal with is their separate rep resentation in student government. Although King and Low-Heywood Thomas have consolidated, their re spective Student Councils will remain separate entities for one last year. Aside from the usual Council agen das of fundraising and organizing stu dent activities, both Councils must now focus on paving the way for one join t Student Council after this school year. If a joint Council involved only the election of representatives from the North and South Campuses, most problems would be solved. As some have com e to realize, though, unifica tion does not com e without some compromise. W hen put under the microscope, the Student Councils of King and Low-Heyw ood Thom as differ a great deal. These differences can be spotted easily in the constitutions of both student governments. A very profound difference between the two Councils is the election pro cess. Allowing for certain year-level requirements, any King student in the

Upper School may run for office. At LHT, though, an office seeker is re stricted from running if she: • has a grade point average be low C • has not petitioned for office • has not received written approval from the Dean of Students. The root of the problem that lies ahead in merging the Councils can be found in the two words: student coun cil. At King, the Council's purpose is to represent the student body. At Low-Heywood Thomas, though, the purpose is to try to incorporate a m ajority of the student body as well as the faculty directly into the Council. The heads of all clubs and committees (team captains, Hey-Day editor, etc.) arc required to attend all meetings and the faculty is allowed to vole in the election of officers. This year’s Councils arc faced with putting aside past traditions and dif ferences in order to make it through the transitional year. Already, this past spring, a consti tutional com m ittee composed of vol unteer students was formed at King for the purpose of trying to find a path to w a rd s co m m o n c o n s titu tio n a l ground. O nce this com m ittee form u lates a proposal, it will be presented to the Low-Heyw ood Thom as Student Council and plans for a combined Council will get underway.

One of the Art Club projects was a student art show. The show took place at Barbell’s jewelry store of New Canaan and al lowed many KLHT students to show off their many artistic talents.

Amnesty International is an organization devoted to protecting the human rights of people all over the world by discovering offending countries and then confronting them with their crimes. Most of the time the offenders are high government officials but sometimes the whole government is to blame. Our aim is to raise public awareness and to speak on behalf of prisoners of conscience. These are people who are tortured and murdered because of their religious and political beliefs, occupa tions, personal affiliations, and most commonly, for their failure to comply with the demands of dictatorship. We as Americans do not realize how lucky we are to have the Bill of Rights to protect us; no other country in the world has such a bill. Since our school chapter’s founding in 1987 progress has been slow coming but we are optimistic about the years to come. Since the start of the school year, we have collected approximately two hundred signatures for the Declaration of Human Rights and have sent hundreds of letters on behalf of about forty key prisoners of conscience. My thanks to all the members for their hard work and especially to Mrs. Marrow and my officers Tina, Danielle, and Karyn, because without their help this club would surely have fallen apart. The club was comprised of nearly half of the Junior class and also Sopho mores. As a result of all of the hard work and rehearsing, not only was the acting fabulous, but a wonderful time was had by all. Much of the success must be attributed to the many new members, and the Drama Club looks forward to their return in the ’89-'90 season.

\ V. L H'T r This year’s Viking squad started out with the hope of winning the division and the ability to do it. Unfortunately a series of tough losses in close games hit the Vikings. A close loss to Dwight Englewood set the tone for the season. It was the first of two overtime losses. The game against Hopkins was far closer than the 0-14 score suggests. After breezing by Harvey, the Vikings encountered Dalton and lost what had been an even struggle by two points. Later in the season the Vikings met up with a league powerhouse, Brunswick. After a pitched battle which went into overtime, the Vikings lost. Their failure to score from two yards out cost them whatever chance they had at victory. The season took a dram atic change for the better when the Vikings beat St. Luke’s at Homecoming. This victory sparked the Vikings who went on to beat Rye. Overall the Vikings were 3-5. Coach Main expressed the season well when he stated that the team was about “a yard and a minute short of victory” on many occasions. Another bright spot was Read Hubbard’s breaking of the record for yard’s rushed in a single season. He rushed for 1,219 yards. The team had a great amount of commitment and proved th at it could contend with the traditional powerhouses of the league.

We didn’t win many games, hut we were in them all until the end, losing only by a small margin. As a team, we gained a feeling of unity th at lasted far beyond the season. Many players had outstanding performances. Connie Huffine, was both an offensive threat and a defensive force while Lauren Seigenfeld and Lora Phillips continued to contibute greatly every game. Kim Kelly, after returning to goal this year, was a powerful last line of defense. At the beginning of the season Jessica Spelke and Pilar Rabassa were voted co captains. As a result of Pili’s unfortunate season-long illness, Sophie Bowater lent a hand as tri-captain. Our top senior players also contributed greatly. Jessica Spelke won All-League recognition, while Sarah Lucey won Honorable Mention, and Sophie Bowater was our All-Star player. After working hard at the Merestead Hockey Camp in August we felt satisfied at the end of the season. Thanks to our Coach Miss DeVinne and the rest of the players for a fantastic season!

The KLHT Varsity Soccer team experienced a season to be proud of. Although their record of 4-10 suggests a rather unsatisfactory season, it is a great improvement from the preceding year’s record of 2-11. The overall skill level, along with the team unity was tremendously greater than that of last year. The record of the Varsity Soccer team is very misleading. Only four games were won, yes, but few games were played in which the team was more than one goal behind. We had our first taste of real victory in years, and it created a hunger to win and top last year’s record. Dedication produced a new and improved Viking team and our success was reflected in the comments from the coaches of rival teams. League play-offs were actually in our sights. Though the team itself thrived on its unity, there were a number of individual stars. All-League Honorable Mention goalie, Bob Simon, kept us in every game. The defensive force in Arty Smith was also a prime reason for the team's outstanding showing and was recognized with an All-League selection. Forward, Hadi Ali, also earned All-League honors. The individual talents by no means stopped here. Senior, Jason Konidaris, was well-deserving of All-League honors, and he proved this with determination and raw skill. Junior, Brian Stavrides, was also a player never quite satisfied with himself, but others noticed his exemplary contributions. As we all know, individuals cannot win alone in a team sport. It is essential to have a team effort, and this year’s Viking Soccer team proved that when a team comes together and plays as a unit, amazing things may happen.

The K.L.H.T. Volleyball Team had a very strong season. The team finished third in the league overall, with an impressive show in the tournament. The team lost in a close final against Masters. The return of Coach Barbara Smith helped the team greatly. In addition to this a strong offense by Rachael Schwartz and a tight defense by Tracy Dowling, helped to keep us in every game. The team was lucky to have alot of depth in its ranks such as Sandi Kahn, whos incredible serves gave us many aces, and Courtney Black who improved greatly over the season. 'I'r;?.! n

This past summer many of us were asking the question, “Will there be a cross country team this year?” The first day of preseason, this question still seemed to be on everyone’s mind. Coach Bob Burns quickly began to form the disheveled team into an athletic machine. Runners from the previous year began to improve on their old times and the team began to look stronger. Joe Krummel, the team captain, helped to bring the team togeth er. His times improved greatly and his attitude contributed to the team greatly. The team was also aided by the soccer players: Jason Konidaris, Bob Simon, and Paul Dipasquale. These runners helped allow the team to be a competetive force in the league. Jason Konidaris quickly became a keystone of the team. His course time rivaled that of our last year’s captain, Matt Dorf. With the combined effort of all the members of the cross country team, the Vikings were able to achieve a winning record and third place in the league.

Lara Wagner was second in the All-League Championships, Lora Phillips, third; Brooke Kuf fel, fifth; and Alison Dusault, seventh. Every member of the above achieved the honor of a medal position in the Blue Knight Invita tional. Each athlete worked hard throughout the season and deserved the success that she achieved. Congratulations on a wonderful season!

Cheerleading was very successful this year. The squad worked very hard to boost school spirit by supporting all ex tra-curricular activities on the field and off. Through the contributions of the school, we were able to display the col ors of KLHT on our new sweaters. Hopefully this spirit will be carried on in the future years.

The ’88-’89 Varsity Basketball Team is a special one because of the great familiarity and cameraderie between its nine members. Each of the players is an excellent athlete and active partici pant in other extracurricular activities. Though the season is a grind and the official victories were few , there were personal victories every day in the superior talent, cooperation, and spirit ex hibited by the girls. Captains Sarah Lucey and Tracy Dowling are now forging ahead to college, but wish the best of luck to Fiona, Kim, Lisa, Mary, Lauren, Lora, and Connie in the ’89-'90 season.

Once upon a time, the yearbook was centered around the Senior themes and colors. .4s a result of the KLHT merger, the yearbook staff had to base its theme on both of the schools rather than LHT alone. In a new tradition, however, this "DPS” (year book lingo for double page spread) to the girls and Seniors of Low-Hey wood Thomas. The theme this year is: Dream your dream and do your best Never doubt and never rest Until that dream is yours . . . The senior uniform colors are: peach, grey, and black The class motto is: To be rather than to seem. The class song is: “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out” by Cat Stevens The class mascot is: Snuffalupagus We would especially like to thank Mme Wagner for helping us to produce such a fabulous Junior Party in February 1988. Lastly, sincere gratitude to all of our other Upper School Advisors. Love, The LHT Class of ’89

And to KLHT) we leave Over the years, the faculty has seen us develop and With maturity came closer relationships with the tea; This maturity has allowed us to be closer and to ha mate friendships with many of them. We feel t friendship is manifested in our ability to roast the this, our Last Will and Testament. “Thanks for the Memories

With the merger this year, the seniors were forced to choose a new name for the yearbook. This was a great responsibility, for the name th at we chose would be the name future classes would use. The name of Kaleidoscope was chosen for its connotation, an object which shows changing faces and a multiple of backgrounds. This idea is the driving force of King & Low-Heywood Thomas.

The Seniors would like to express our gratitude to all of those who gave the yearbook support this year. We realize th at many people were inundated with donation requests and th at prices have gone up for yearbook advertisements. Despite these set-backs, patrons continued to give their support through ads, bake sales, and sales of grapefruit. We were forced to raise more money than ever before as a result of decreased funding from the school. We met this challenge and because of the generousity of those people, we were able to overcome this obstacle. Thank-you for your support. ) Iâ–

What a year! This has definitely been a difficult yearbook to produce. Merging two totally different yearbooks with totally different traditions is much harder then it looks! The Kaleidoscope staff has gone to great lengths to get this book out on time, even pulling an all-nighter for the last deadline. We must give a very special thanks to Mrs. Feder for her support and sacrifice during our all-nighter, which would not have been possible without her. We thank you, Mrs. Feder, from the bottom of our hearts. Also if it wasn't for Mr.Pusack, who got us started and put up with our constant problems, we would have had a hard time getting the yearbook off the ground. Then there’s Mr. DePree. What can we say about a man who has put up with ten screaming teenagers, endless complaints, missed deadlines, wrong layouts, misspelled copy, absent editors, missing photos and kids who won't accept his censorships? Except THANK YOU. Thank you ,Mr. Depree, for your TIME, PATIENCE, and SUPPORT, but most of all for your HUMOR during those long afternoons of work. It's a tough job but someone has to do it, and you have certainly done it well! The collage on these two pages represent our thoughts, fears, concep tions and satisfactions during the trying period of creating the yearbook. We hope this yearbook represents the true nature of the 1988-1989 school year. Good luck to all the staffs to come! Sincerely, The 1988-1989 Yearbook Staff
