’89 Walk-a-Thon

Good weather for great fun!

This year’s Walk-a-Thon was under threat of being cancelled because of rain, for the previous week was soggy. Fortu nately, the sun broke through the clouds early Friday morning, and the walk was held. After an assembly in the Upper School campus gym, the entire student body and faculty met in the circle for the cutting of the ribbon by Mrs. Cesare. At ten o ’clock, the walk was on. While everyone was walking, Bernie

Edwards encouraged people by playing music on the field between the two cam puses. When everybody had finished three laps of 3.3 kilometers each, they gathered outside for pizza and soda. The second annual Walk-a-Thon was a big success, raising lots of money for the United Way, the yearbook, and the C h r o n ic le . As the years progress, the Walk-a-Thon will probably become a time-honored tradition at KLHT.

Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!

The start of the race.

Homecoming ’89

Vikings rock the stands!

Despite extremely unfa vorable weather, the 1989 KLHT Homecoming was a great success. The weekend’s festivities started with the tra ditional Pep Rally on Friday afternoon. The cheerleaders, complemented by the new Pep Band, roused the spirit of the crowd. After the Varsi ty teams were introduced, the players were thoroughly pumped up for their games. Unfortunately, however, the weather did not share the spirit of our students. Torren tial rains forced the cancella tion of both the field hockey game and the cross country meet. However, both teams

won their hom ecom ing games on a rescheduled date. The first game of the week end took place on Saturday morning when volleyball took on Sacred Heart, destroying, them 3-0. The next game was to be the soccer match, but unfortunately, the field was under six inches of water. But, some miraculous handi work by the maintenance staff saved the day by con verting the football field into a soccer field. After a shaky first half, the KLHT team ex ploded and scored six goals on the bewildered team, lead ing the Vikings to a victory, 8-

.

Although the football team was not victorious, they put up a valiant effort in their game against Brunswick. The KLHT defense was over whelmed by a lighting-quick Brunswick running back who was practically unstoppable. Certainly the high point of the game was when freshman Scott Trupchak caught a touchdown pass from senior Captain and quarterback An

drew Gautrau. The final score was KLHT 7, Bruns wick 28. Homecoming festivities were wrapped up on Satur day night at the annual Homecoming Dance. Junior Bernie Edwards provided the music that encouraged every one to dance, including Homecoming King, Remo Tartaglia, and Queen, Fiona Muir.

Talent Show The Stars are out tonight! Every year the talent show gets bet ter and better. Each show seems to have a special twist that makes the program stand out from any other. This year’s show ranged from the opening act of seven lower schoolers singing, to the band “ Level Six” to close the show. This year there was more participa tion in the show and in the audience than we have ever had. In the consoli dation of the two schools, more peo ple got involved in the show. This year’s program also contained a lot of participation by the new students who had more talent than anyone had ever imagined. Leading the audience through the show were M.C.’s Debbie Levinson, Nicole DeRosa, Andrew Sia, and Deena Shaffer. All in all, this year’s “ Come Catch Our Stars” was better than ever. The joining of the two schools added to the fun and excitement of the show, which will not diminish in the years to come.

Hallowe’en ’89 Boo!

Even though the weather was cold, rainy, and miserable, the spirit of Hallowe’en was all around. The energy level was overwhelming, and everyone was excited about the 1989 Hallowe’en party. Costumes in cluded the Chipettes, witches, static cling, a domino, and a cliche.

All the news that fits, we’ll print.

Football was never quite like this!

The Halloween party was fan tastic and everyone had a great time. The party had prizes that included candy and no uniform days. The candy went to the most original costumes, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and an oreo cookie. Although almost every one dressed up, the senior class won for the most participation.

Varsity Football The 1989-1990 Viking football season met with relative success. Despite a 1-6 record, the rebuilding squad kept high hopes and aspirations throughout the year. Under the coaching of Tom Main, the Vikings were led on the field by co-captains Andrew Gautrau and Morad Ghorban. With several new faces on the team, along with some position changing, the Vikings soon became a com petitive and respectable team. Although the Vikings had their fair share of hard defeats, they also had many successes that will, hope fully, carry over to next year’s squad.

The departing seniors are led by four-year men P e d e r M a a rb je rg and N ick Gianopoulos. Gerritt Lydecker and Chris Houghton were new forces on the squad, and they contributed in needed areas. Next year’s squad will be based around returning lettermen juniors Ahmed Fattouh and Adam Goldenberg, and sophomores Phil Sissener, Pete Greeenfield, Greg Katsaros, and Rob Kligman. With these young players as a foundation, Coach Main is confident that the Vikings will soon become a dominant com petitor in future seasons.

Cheerleading

“Go Vikings!”

Cheerleading has gone very well this year. We lost a great portion of the squad last fall as graduated seniors went off to college. However, the returning group was joined by the new additions of seniors Jess DiSalle,

Debbie Levinson, and junior Cindy Pelzner. Everyone worked long and hard to perfect the annual KLHT pep rally dance, which was very successful. All in all, we’ve had a great year full of spirit and fun.

First R ow . Deena Shaffer, Jessica DiSalle, Robin Goldstein, Cindy Pelzner, Mary Fox. S eco n d R ow . Kate Comiskey, Whitney Pagliaro (Co-Captain), Veronica Hanzel (Co-Captain).

Varsity Field Hockey The 1989 Varsity Field Hockey Team ended with a record of 8-5, the best record ever for KLHT. In addition, the losses were by a single goal. The team fininshed fourth in the FAA League, our most impressive show ing ever. For the past four years, the core of this ’89

team has been building. This year the seniors represented eight out of the eleven starting players. Because the seniors have been work ing together since seventh grade, we were able to come together as a real threat in the League this year. We played as a team, won as a team, and lost as a team.

Lora Phillips was the high scorer with ten goals while Fiona Muir was also an offensive threat with five goals. Mary Biewen played the mid-field both offensively and defen sively, while Lisa DeWolf, supported by Bruce Fallon, Allison Feinglas, and Kim Kessler, overpowered the other teams in defense. Kim Kelly had an impressive season

in the cage with five shut-outs. At the beginning of the season, Lisa DeWolf, Connie Huffine, and Lauren Seigenfeld were voted tri-captains. The tri captains were also selected to play in the All-Star game. Connie Huffine and Lora Phillips won All-League recognition, while Lisa DeWolf won an Honorable Mention.

Varsity Soccer “Well, at least they tried hard.” Some people may think that that is the highest compliment one could give this year’s KLHT Varsity Soccer team. But the eighteen players who made up the team may disagree. The team didn’t try hard; they tried their hardest. Although the team finished with a disap pointing 1-12 record, it was far from a

depressing season. The first four games were dismal. The team lost two games that they should have won and got destroyed in two games that should have been close. Then a change occurred! Under the strong motiva tion of Head Captain Brian Stavrides the team started playing . . . weil!

L eft: “ It’s a bird, if s a plane . . . no, just a landshark.” B elow : Coach Noble with Tri-Captains Brian Stavrides, Paul DiPasquale, and Hayward Smith.

Suddenly, the team started function ing as a unit. The defense, led by Hayward Smith, was one of the best in the league. The wing defenders, John Brenner and Chris Lagan, a defender who had a bit of a problem distinguish ing the ball from an opponent’s leg, helped support the defensive stmcture of the team. The midline of halfbacks was also a force, not only defensively but also offensively. They were the leading goal-scorers; Matt Morrison, the team’s leading scorer, had six in the season, Brian Stavrides had three, and

Marc Rinaldi had two. These three players controlled the field on both offense and defense. The forward line, although not much of a scoring threat, was an effi cient group of players. The leading scorer, Greg Crofton, who came up with goals in clinch situations, headed the offense. John Salib and Adam Bahna carried up the ball on the wings, maintaining a good, constant offense. All in all, the team functioned well and showed much commitment, despite their losing record.

Varsity Volleyball This year was a definite growing year for volleyball. There were only five varsity play ers, while six are needed for a full team. This year’s team was held together by the strengths of three returning seniors,

Courtney Black, Jennie Dubitsky, and cap tain, Laura Volpe. The highlight for the team was their Homecoming victory against Sa cred Heart Academy, which they won 3-0.

Front R ow . Jennie Dubitsky, Carolyn Buzanoski. S eco n d R ow : Courtney Black, Laura Volpe (Captain), Mrs. Smith (Coach), Lyn Buccieri.

Cross Country The cross-country season had its ups and downs. During the season we were running about fifteen to twenty-five miles a week with a long run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The other days of the week were short runs so we could recover from the day before. Our season didn’t start until October, and by then we had five fuli-time runners and one soccer player (Corey), for Paul had hurt his knee and was out. Our first meet was against Harvey and Hamden Hall on October sixth. Hamden Hall forfeited, and we beat Harvey with ease. Our runners took first (Bryan Epps), second (Warren G reene), and third (Sean Gallagher). Then we went up against a real challenge, St. Luke’s and Wright Tech on October thirteenth. We beat St. Luke’s and that was a real boost to our morale because they had beaten us last year. With that win we knew we could be competitive and could give the other teams a real run for their money. Wright Tech beat us, however, and they went on to take the league. We met Greens Farms Academy on October twenty-fifth and once again took first, second, and third to win the meet. Our last meet was against Rye, whom we beat, and Brunswick who beat us and came in second in the league. We were only beaten twice, and we came in third in the league. But the season didn’t end there; we had to run the Championship

Race which was held on November first at Harvey. The course was three miles long, and on the starting line every runner hopes that the months of long and lonely training pay off. The best to hope for is to shave maybe a second or two off your previous time, but when Bryan went up to that line he must have been thinking minutes, not seconds, that he was going to take off his time because that is what he did — he went from a time of 18:27 on October sixth to 17:19 on Novem ber first. That improvement led him to sev enth place and a trophy for All-League, which the first seven runners get. Bryan is a senior, and when he graduates, we will lose and miss a good captain, fellow runner, and friend. Sean, who went from a 20:00 on October sixth to a 18:16 on November, first came in thirteenth in the league. That is an excellent time for a freshman, and next year he will be a great asset to us. Warren came in sixteenth with a time of 18:36. Carl came in twentyfifth with a time of 19:32, shaving a minute off his previous time. Corey was next in thirty-fifth place with a time of 20:23, also taking a minute off his best time. The team did better than our best hopes. Cross Country in the 1989 season did extremely well. We never gave up and persevered throughout the hard times of our training and finished as winners.

Well, it seems like old times for the Viking Basketball Team. Where last year’s season left off, this year’s team picked up, and boy, what a season it has been! Although missing last year’s starting seniors Hubbard, Cavazzini, and Konidaris, the 89-90 season

team came in with some fresh faces just as good. Mitch Hoffman, Eric Kropp, and Rob Kligman, three new students to KLHT, along with returning members Andrew Gautrau and Nick Gianopoulos, make up the starting five, which at times could be unstoppable.

Front R ow : Bryan Epps, Mitch Hoffman, Evan Kropp, Greg Katsaros, Michael Edwards, Brian Stavrides, Chris Blanc. S econ d R ow : Sean Grant (Coach), Bemie Edwards, Eric Kropp, Nick Gianopoulos (CoCaptain), Andrew Gautrau (Co-Captain), Rob Kligman, Mr. Greer (Coach).

Throughout the season Big Nick averaged about fifteen points a game, which made a significant contribution to the team (Excluding a couple of missed dunks!). Accom panied by the cheer leaders at many away games, the Vikings made an impression upon all rival teams, and maybe next year we’ll even beat St. Luke’s!!

The season had a rocky start, however. Beaten by about twenty points by Brunswick in the first game, the KLHT Vikings came back in the following games to show their opponents who’s boss. It is nice to note that, at the last game of the season, the Vikings beat Brunswick at home.

The success of this year’s Girls’ Basketball team was long overdue. Basketball has not been a strong sport for KLHT in past years but a tremendous improvement came about this year with the combination of seniors that have played for years and many under classmen. The Captain, Kim Kelly, proved that her title was well deserved. With her vast knowledge of the sport, her ability to coach, and her excellence as a player, she led KLHT

to many victories. The fast-paced and exciting games brought faithful support ers to many games. The team’s spirit never dropped despite injuries and some occasional losses. This year’s team will hopefully encour age more students to play, more people to watch, and perhaps make the girls’ KLHT basketball team one to be proud of for years to come.

F ron t R ow : Miss DiVinne (Coach), Kim Kelly (Captain), Connie Huffine. S eco n d R ow : Lisa DeWolf, Lauren Seigenfeld, Brooke Kuffel, Tara Simon. Third R ow : Fiona Muir, Mary Biewen.

This year’s wrestling team was by far one of the best in recent history. It was so successful because of its perfect blend of skill, strength, and determination. The team, coached by Mr. Main and led by team captains Adam Bahna, Paul DiPasquale, and Peder Maarbjerg, presented fierce competition to teams both in and out of the league. Adam Bahna, in his final year of wres tling, continued to prove himself as the dominant wrestler in his weight class, as did Paul DiPasquale. Freshman Sean Gal lagher made an impressive showing in his first season with the team. Marc Rinaldi continued his steady improvement and shone in his junior year; he is expected to

continue his winning ways next season. Another strong prospect for next year is Phil Sissener who defeated his opponents through a mastery of both judo and wres tling. Peder Maarbjerg, Ahmed Fattouh, and Pete Greenfield all held their own in the heavier weight classes, adding to the team’s success. Corey Feder, Chris La gan, and Lance Tammero all showed themselves as viable opponents in the re cent season. All in all, the team proved that hard work and determination will pay off in the end. Hats off to Mr. Main who took the team from a mediocre season last year to a winning one this year.

“And so at last to learn to use their wings.” — Robert Frost Congratulations To the Class of ’90 With love and pride from The Parents’ Association

Well, here it is, the 1989-90 yearbook. Production of this book was not as easy as I had hoped it would be. Beginning in the spring of ’89 with grand ideas of splendour, I soon realized that I would need a lot of help. Things went slowly at first. The desire to help was not lacking, only the knowledge of how to help. We were unable to attend the Josten's workshops over the summer, so everybody had to learn their job as we went along. My apologies to those who wanted to help, but didn’t. We just didn’t have the time to train all of you. Despite all of this, and a few other miscalculations, we did it! No all-nighters, either. Though the experience was harsh, and there were lots of stress-filled days, we saw and overcame.

This yearbook is here because of the combined efforts of many people. A lot of dedicated people sacrificed many hours and I would just like to thank them for it. Thanks to Chris Russo, Chris Lagan, and Adam Goldenberg for helping with layout. Thanks to Laura Volpe, Debbie Levinson, Jessica Ginsburg, and Eric Smith for taking great photos. Thanks to Robin Rapaport and Paul DiPasquale for financing the book. Also, thanks again to Paul for taking care of the grapefruit sale. Thanks to Melissa Fenwick, Erica Brody, Alex Caradimitropoulo, and Jaquita Monroe, a dedicated copy staff. Thanks to Matt Polen for doing a little bit of everything for us. Year 2010, Last Will and Testament, the grapefruit sale, articles, layouts, and photography, he did whatever we needed him to do. Thanks to Cindy Pelzner for all of the fantastic artwork. Thanks to Lisa DeWolf, Sarah Walters, Tara Simon, Brooke Kuffel, Debbie King, and Jason Cole for helping us out of a jam. Also, thanks to Hayward Smith and Warren Greene for those fine articles. Thanks to Kim Kessler, Megan Campbell, and Lauren Seigenfeld, for taking photos and making those collages. Thanks to Mrs. Miner for helping get lists and check spellings, as well as for mailing all of the proofs and deadlines. Thanks to all of the teachers for identifying the photos and checking spellings of names.

Sorry, Bri, but this picture had to be in here. Thanks to Brian, Eric, Jared, Karen, Erica, Mary, Paul. Andrew. Danielle, Ver, Karin, Jessica(s), Deena, & Brenzky. I would like to thank all of my teachers. You have taught me a lot and have helped to shape who I am. Mrs. Huntoon and Mrs. Hermanson, the two of you gave me skills and lessons about school and life that I shall never forget. Thanks to all of my coaches for teaching me the value of sportsmanship and team play. Sorry, I couldn’t get an athletic scholarship to college! Thanks for putting up with all of my library antics, Mrs. Karlan and Ms. Barder. Thanks Mrs. Karlan for the countless favors you have done for me over the years. Thanks Mrs. Cesare and Mr. Ryan for all of the support and opportunities that you have given me. Thanks to Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Wade for getting me into college. Thanks Mrs. Forster for all of the guidance, care, and patience. Thanks Mr. Pauli for being both a teacher and a friend, for all of your great stories, and for educating me about the real world, too. Thanks Mrs. O for introducing the theatre to me. Thanks, also, for the wonderful advice you’ve given me. Lastly, I wish to thank all of the faculty. You’ve been very supportive over the years. A great big special thanks to Mom & Dad. I love you both very much. And I wish to thank one more. Thank you God for all that you have given me, for the teachers, friends, and family who have guided me so far. I pray that You will be with me in the years to come. — Andrew Matthew Sia

Thanks to Mrs. Shaffer for helping us take pictures. Thanks also to the Development Office for loaning us photos when we were missing them. Thanks to our advisors Mrs. Mishkin, Mr. Pusack, Ms. Peterson, and Mrs. Kweskin. We could not have done it without you. Thanks Mrs. Kweskin for galvanizing me when I needed it. Thanks to Mr. Richard Carpenter, our Josten’s advisor, for all of his help and insight. A Big Thanks to Deena Shaffer, Veronica Hanzel, and Wyndham Lathem. You guys were a great bunch of Editors. I’ve run into few people as dedicated as you are.

Sincerely,

Andrew Sia Editor-In-Chief
