Senior Dedication

We, the KLHT senior class of 1991, dedicate our yearbook to Daniel C. Hudson. Far more than just the Head of the Upper School, Mr. Hudson has been a dedicated teacher, advisor, and friend to us all. His unique sense of humor more than makes up for his unique sense of fashion. Stern appearance aside, we know that Big Dan loves us as much as we love him. Whether he is reprimanding us for being out of uniform, assigning detentions for being late, or just yelling for no apparent reason, Mr. Hudson manages to do it with a smile. His continued faith, commitment, and effort have helped us to learn respect, appreciation for others, and self-discipline. We are truly thankful to have had him as part of our high school lives. Besides, who else can touch the back of his neck with his tongue?

Ah, yes. The Seniors — paragons of all of the many facets of school life at K.L.H.T. They are the most com mitted and loyal members of the student body. Many of this year's graduating class have attended K.L.H.T. since lower or middle school. Their continued dedica tion culminated in this, their last year at this institution. In their final nine months here, these fine young indivi duals must not only cope with college admissions & academics, but they are also responsible for many ex tracurricular activities. The Class of 1991 has left an indelible mark , and they will certainly be remembered long after their departure.

ReflectionS I j

1 !

The members of the faculty are a group of dedicated and patient individuals who supervise the everyday ac tivities at KLHT. Not only are they teachers, they are also the ones we turn to for guidance, support, a listen ing ear, and, at times, a shoulder to cry on. This helps to solidify the bonds between teachers and their students, and makes school feel more like home. Because of these special, unique individuals and their willingness to help us, mold us, and be there for us, KLHT has become a place filled with happiness, friendship, and pride.

ReflectionS

The underclassmen, who are on the road to becom ing seniors, start their journey down the road of acade mia in Pre-Kindergarten, where they learn the basics of sharing and consideration, and move up through the Lower and Middle Schools, learning the basic skills that all need to know in life. They finally reach the Upper School, where most of the advanced learning takes place, preparing them for college and the admissions process which starts in the junior year. In the freshman, sophomore, and junior years, as with the senior year, each class has a “ month" in which to plan some special event. This is a new tradition at KLHT, and hopefully one that will withstand the test of time.

The spirit of KLHT is best seen throughout school events. During the '90-'91 school year, these events included the hilarious pie eating contest at the Halloween festivities, everyone coming together to support the teams at Home coming, the fabulous turnout at the Talent Show, and the complete participation at the Christmas show. These events bring the school together into one united group, building up everyone's pride in themselves and their school.

Homecoming '90 A dance, a barbecue, a King & Queen, an exciting football game, and a Pep Rally: all of these items call to mind Home coming Day. The students of KLHT turned these very items into an extraordinary, fun-filled weekend. The spirit and sup port from the Pep Rally and Pride Day flowed right into an exciting “ Come Catch Our Stars" Talent Show Night. The weekend proceeded with volleyball, field hockey, soccer, and one of the most thrilling and victorious football games ever. Halftime kept the school spirit going with a fabulous band playing on the sidelines, the cheerleaders' dance to “ U Can't Touch This," and a new Homecoming tradition initiated by the Senior Class. This new tradition included the King, Bernie Ed wards, and the Queen, Jennifer Warren, being driven around the football field in a red convertible decorated with balloons and streamers. All of the events, as well as the tremendous amount of spirit and pride felt by everyone present, made Homecoming Weekend 1990 one of the best ever.

This year, the Halloween festivities were led by the Senior Class, instituting a brand new tradition in the KLHT Upper School. The fun began at lunchtime with a cos tume contest. There were prizes awarded to a bunch of grapes, a pair of nuns, and a Russian general! Following the costume contest was a pie eating contest, having one boy and one girl from each class eating as much pie as they could. The winners were the members of the tenth grade contingency: Dan Mandelker and Lib by Malikian. Their prize for eating the most pies was a pizza party for their whole class with the Seniors.

Gypsy, The Musical

I

i

On May 11 th and 12th, 1990, the house lights dimmed, the curtain opened, and another world emerged full of light and energy as the students of KLHT presented the spring musical, Gypsy. With the witty, well-delivered dialogue and the sparkling musical numbers, the cast charmed the audience, young and old alike. The fifty-four members of the cast and crew, selected from the fourth through twelfth grades, were led by the stunning perfor mances of seniors Andrew Sia, Deena Shaffer, and Nicole DaRosa, and were guided through the organized bedlam behind the scenes by another talented senior, Lisa DeWolf. The commitment made by everyone involved to the show and to each other, forged by the unique sensation of working before a live audience, was demon strated in the high quality of the performance and the warmth with which the students applauded one another. The affection within the cast spanned boundaries im posed by grade or class difference, uniting them toward a common goal with an intensity that was palpable to the audience.

108

An extremely demanding show, Gypsy required many of the student actors and actresses to assume charac ters very foreign to their own lives. Particularly notable were Ahmed Fattouh as Rose's father, and the three strippers: Tara Simon as Tessie Tura; Veronica Hanzel as Miss Mazeppa; and Debbie King as Miss Electra. Each of these four set aside their own possible reserva tions and blossomed under the lights, giving perfor mances that exuded with pride at their achievements. As in all student ventures, the production of Gypsy needed adult direction to steer the students' talents toward the exceptional result. Once again, the com bined talents of Elizabeth Forster, Ann King, Cathy Mishkin, Connie Nichols, and the incomparable Ann Ostrow merged to create yet another beautiful, fun show which has made the KLFHT musical theatre department such an outstanding contribution to the school as a whole.

The clubs at KLHT make up a vital part of the school. They not only enhance the students themselves, but also create a sense of community and unity inside as well as outside the school. Ranging from the Student Council and Art Club to Indelible Ink and the all-important Yearbook, each club has its own sense of belonging at KLHT, where everyone makes time to contribute in the many fundraisers and activities sponsored by each club. The clubs at KLHT make up what we are, unique and special in every way.

1990-1991 was a major transition year for K.L.H.T. athletics. Alphonse Orio took over as Athletic Director and did his utmost to rejuvenate the sports program. Coach Orio met the challenge with a unique sense of humor, spurring the athletes on with the now infamous phrases "They left you!" and "King is dead, the K.L.H.T. Viking is alive and roaring!" As the year progressed, it became obvious that the teams were improving. K.L.H.T.'s athletes have absorbed Mr. Orio's attitude and spirit and can look forward to continued improvement and success.

Varsity Football As KLHT entered a new decade with new traditions, Viking Football entered a new era under the leadership of a new coaching staff. Losing the first few games, the Vikings searched themselves for the pride to persevere and come from behind. Determined to succeed, the Vikings defeated St. Mary's 22-20 in front of the enormous Homecoming crowd. Losing a close game to Harvey, the Vikings entered their final game against Rye Country Day. The Vikings scored in the first minute of the game, but Rye managed to come back and win. It was obvious that the KLHT football team had come a long way since September. Though the team's performance did not translate into many wins, some individuals had a notable season. Phil Sissener consistently demonstrated his talent and ability, as did seniors Adam Goldenberg and Ahmed Fattouh, juniors Robbie Kligman, Peter Greenfield, Greg Katsaros, and Adam Victor. Most players were underclassmen, and so, though the team's youth was a drawback this year, it is this youth that promises a much brighter future.

Varsity Field Hockey The 1990 Field Hockey season didn't go as well as planned. Our record didn't reflect the time and effort put in by the players. The team was led by seven talented seniors who were the backbone of the team. The team had a strong defense, but it lacked consistency in its offense. Samantha Marx, Jennifer Gardiner, and co-captains Mary Biewen and Marie DiGiorgio were chosen to play in the Fairchester All-Star game. All four played very well. We wish the best of luck to next year's team and we hope their record is a little better.

Boys' Varsity Soccer The 1990 KLHT Varsity Boys' Soccer team had a season to be proud of. With a record of 5-4-3, the team posted the first winning season in a few years. This is a great improvement from last year, when the team won only one game. By the time the first game rolled around, the team was in great shape. First year team member Demetrio Catos proved that he was major force in the FAA. Captain Marc Rinaldi led the potent offense with the help of Anthony Guevara, Marcus Loyola, and Lance Tammero. The halfback line was headed by Captain John Salib with support on the wings from Chris Blanc and Mike Bellwin. The rock-solid defense was led by Captain Chris Lagan. As the wing fullbacks, Mike Edwards and Adrien Blanc showed that they could play with the best the opposition had to offer. At the end of the season, John Salib, Chris Lagan, and Demetrio Catos earned All-League honors. All in all, it was a great season for the Boys' Varsity Soccer team.

Girls' Varsity Soccer Girls' Varsity Soccer has grown rapidly over the past year. We started last year with a small JV team consisting of many young and inexperienced players. This year we have grown into two teams that have had an excellent season. Although our record doesn't reflect a successful season, if you had attended one of our games you would have seen a lot of hard work and dedication. Each day, rain or shine, each player came to practice ready to work and have fun. Under the guidance of Captains Tara Simon, Meg Larned and Coach Casanova, a group of players became a coherent team. Each year our team has grown in numbers and Ehe skill level has improved. We will definitely see a lot of success from this new team at KLHT.

Volleyball The 1990 Volleyball team did not have as good a season as was hoped for, but did improve upon last year's record, from 0-12 to 4-8. The Vikings ended up fourth out of seven in the league, increasing the standings by beating CFA, seeded number four going into the tournament, which was hosted by KLHT. The team was seeded number five at the end of the regular season. This year the team beat NYSD twice, GFA once in the regular season, and St. Mary's once, improving upon last year's somewhat disappointing season. The Homecoming game was by far the most exciting, for the Vikings played the number one team, Sacred Heart Academy, our cross-town rivals. Unfortunately, the team lost in the fifth game after a comeback of great proportions in the fourth. Captain Lyn Buccieri led a young team of two juniors, seven sophomores, one eighth grader, and the first male manager the team has ever seen. If this year's season is any indication of next year, then watch out opponents, here we come!

Cheerleading This year the cheerleaders had six members, three of whom were returning seniors including Captain Whitney Pagliaro. In addition there was a returning junior and two new members. This year the team had a new and dedicated coach, Renee Orio. The cheerleaders supported the football team at every game and practiced very hard every week to prepare for Homecoming. The traditional Pep Rally dance was done to "U Can't Touch This. The dance was choreographed by a senior, Jessica Ginsburg. This dedicated squad had a very successful season during 1990 and 1991.

' Varsity Wrestling graduated only three seniors from last year's 12 win/3 loss record. The team looked forward ccess this year. The season started out nicely with victories against Canterbury & Taft, but by mas vacation, several obstacles arose. This year's seniors, Marc Rinaldi, Ahmed Fattouh, and Chris Lagan ere all injured in the first weeks of action. Freshman Dan Quinn soon followed suit. Forfeiting up to four weight classes in a match, the Vikings were often handicapped 24-0 before the first wrestler stepped onto the mat. The team could not overcome such odds easily. Nevertheless, several individuals excelled. Phil Sissener placed first at the Lexington Tournament and at the FAA's. Phil Sissener went on to become KLHT S first state champion. Corey Feder also had an excellent season, defeating many formidable opponents. Warren Greene, Lance Tammero, and Sean Gallagher all improved as the season progressed. By February, Fattouh & Rinaldi had returned and were able to contribute immensely as the Vikings began a comeback trail. Thanks to Coaches Burns and Van FHoven for a great season.

Boys' Varsity Basketball The boys' varsity basketball team is coached by Bob Greer. The future of this team looks very good, since only three members will be graduating. The captains of the team are Eric Kropp and Bernie Edwards, who left the team halfway through the season. For most of the season, the starting lineup consisted of Eric Kropp, Rob Kligman, Greg Katsaros, Mike Edwards, and Rashidi Lewis. The addition of Lewis, who entered KLHT in the fall, was a pleasant surprise, since he was a valuable asset to the team. Evan Kropp, Scott Trupchak, Chris Blanc, Dave Smith, and Mike Bellwin comprised the rest of the Viking squad. This was a building year for KLHT. With all the young talent, KLHT is sure to surprise many onlookers in the seasons to come.

Front Row . David Smith, Mike Bellwin, Scott Trupchak, Chris Blanc, Adrian Blanc. Second Row . Sean Grant (Asst. Coach), Rashidi Lewis, Evan Kropp, Eric Kropp (Captain), Michael Edwards, Rob Kligman, Greg Katsaros, Coach Greer. Absent-. Bernie Edwards.

"Tw o Blancs and a Kropp — what do you say now, Basilhead?"

Bring on Kroppilito, he gots the juice.

"Please go in, ball, please! I got money on this game!"

Girls Varsity Basketball The girls' basketball team had a respectable season. Even though there were only two returning varsity players, the team was still able to be competitive in the league. With the guidance of our young, inexperienced, but cute coach, the team was able to achieve a good level of play. The team has a tremendous amount of talent and potential, and will continue to improve in the coming seasons.

Front Row. Effei Begetis, Mary Biewen (Captain), Dina Begetis, Beth Kessler. Second Row . Coach Karlan, Brooke Kuffel, Alexandra Scanlan, Lori Feinglas, Coach Tucker.

Senior Class Trip Kudos to the Class Of 1991, For providing us in Boston With lots and lots of fun. Ray got us to Gloucester With plenty of time to spare, Our hope was to get on board And see some whales there. Soon we sighted humpback whales, Minkes and seals too. They dove and rolled and danced about, And performed within our view. At dusk we came ashore, And headed for our hotel. We arrived at the Woburn Ramada. Again, things were going well. Next in line was dinner. Pizza by the pool was the fare, Followed up with ice cream. Ahmed definitely got his share! The evening hours were quiet — we thought, Until a call at two. It seems there was a stir outside, Involving a sheet or two. "So, so sorry" We said to the guard. It surely wasn't our kids, Out in the yard. We headed for the Freedom Trail, The following A.M. Naomi was our guide And soon became our friend!

To dine and then shop. W e wish could have stayed But the aquarium was our next stop! Flome to clean up, sleep, and play, And then off to the Ground Round. Where dinner was served And sister Alice was found! A theater stop was scheduled As next on our list, A play called "Shear Madness" We couldn't resist! We laughed and laughed And some of us cried, But we just couldn't figure out How Mrs. Whatchamacallit died. Our last day began At the Science Museum. The omnimax theater Started us reeling. Harvard Square Was our last stop. A chance to relax, Or a last chance to stop! Now we're on board, Heading for home. W e're captives on this bus, There's no place to roam! Our kudos, again, To this marvelous class. Your spirit, your humor, None can surpass. by Catherine Mishkin (an exhausted chaperone!)

At noon we arrived at Quincy's,

We began working on this book last spring and we were off and running. During the summer, a few of us got together to start organizing. Throughout the year, we worked very hard to meet our deadlines. At times, we thought we had a yearbook "demon who was hiding pictures from us. Overall, it was a struggle, and we hope you enjoy your memories of the 1990-1991 school year.

Congratulations Laxmi!

You were always such a sweet little girl, our little helper. Your questions helped us to find new beauty in the world. We learned a lot from helping you to grow up. You've become a selfassured and independent woman, but you are still and always will be our little girl. WE LOVE YOU AND ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU! Love, Mommy & Daddy.

We've done a lot together and you've done a lot this year. But no matter where you are or what you're doing you'll still be my big sister. Congratulations and good luck! I'll miss you. Love Brent

To LYN, our daughter,

another gift from God.

I love you with all my heart. Even with all [the hard times we have had. You have given me great joy and you are beautiful, funny, a great dancer, and have a beautiful singing voice. You are one of my best friends. We wish you the success in your life and all the happiness you deserve. Love, MOM, DAD and LANA

Dear Tara, The best way to tell if we are good parents is to look at the child. Judging by you — we did a darn good job. Love always, Mom & Dad
