KLHT Kaleidoscope 1993 Volume V

King & Low-Heywood Thomas School 1450 Newfield Avenue Stamford, Connecticut 06905 (203) 322-3413

To the Class of 1993: You chose as this year s theme responsibility, and seldom has a class lived its theme as demonstrably as you have. The ways in which you have taken responsibility are as diverse as the cultural makeup of your class. You have managed change with grace and ingenuity. Your leadership in activities, arts, and athletics has given us pleasure and excitement and has set a new standard for younger students to emulate. The hands you have extended to new classmates and to underclassmen have held a spirit reminiscent of the kind you shared with Ned. We will miss your energy, your humor, your talents, and your spirit. We are proud that a wider audience will now learn from the Class of 1993. Elizabeth Rockwell Cesare Head of School

This year the 1992-1993 Kaleidoscope Staff has chosen our theme to be “Warning! Open at Your Own Risk.” We feel that this theme suits each personality of our class of thirty-eight students. As a class, we are talented in many different ways. Therefore, the class of 1993 would like to WARN the world that we are on our way and ready to take our places in society. Whatever road we choose in the life ahead of us, we will carry the spirit and spunk that will distinguish us from the common person. “Warning! Seniors crossing.”

Mrs. Harbolt - From the start, you were there for all of us as our 10th and 12th grade class advisor. There is no doubt how far our admiration extends. You are a nurturer and a source of needed encouragement. As we have progressed through high school, you have been there to mother our tears and laugh with us when we needed a friend. Most importantly, you have brought out our zany side. You have taught us it is acceptable to be “different”, and for that you will always be with us. Good luck in your future endeavors. We know you will touch others’ lives as you have touched ours.

Med, 'm glad I’ve had the privilege of knowing you. You’ve had the ability to put aside your handicap ind to take advantage of your talents. We’ll ilways remember you. Mike Edwards

Ned, It is once in my 12 years of learning in the same school with you that I was blessed with the presence of a divine soul. That divinity will never leave my heart even if a higher power has now claimed your soul. PFB

Your stay with us was much too brief To justify this numbing grief; I guess the old saw is true; it’s quality Not quantity that counts - at least with you. Ben Van Vechten

Ned, Your inner strength was immeasurable. I knew you for so many years. We grew up together. You have left only good memories. I am thankful for being part of your life. Adrien

A star is born and lives and dies, but its light shines for all eternity. MFW

Ned - to a friend: All you can do Is do what you must You do what you must do And you do it well. Bob Dylan

How do we say goodbye to a friend that taught us the true significance of life? We don’t. Ned, we will always hold your memory in our hearts, and you will graduate with us. We love you. Love the Class of ’93

Jason Cole

First Day of School On September 8 Summer ended for the students of KLHT. No more lying on the beach or going off on exotic vacations or even just relaxing at home. At about ten before eight, the students reluctantly began walking through those two big, black doors to begin yet another school year. The students went to the cafeteria first, where they met up with friends they hadn’t seen all summer, and they met the new students, some of whom had familiar faces from visiting last year. They picked up their revised schedules, listened to some announcements, and then went to the gym for the traditional opening day ceremony Here’s what some people had to say about the first day of school: Sophomores Anna Murphy, “ It was different, but it turned out okay,” Frank Lagan, “ It was very invigorating. I felt

welcomed, like a family,” and Jeff Kuffel, “Just another school day.” Freshman Kevin Devogel added that high school, so far, is “better than middle school.” Junior Kevin Epps exclaimed, “ I loved it.” Mr. Nagle described the day as, “ Busy, hectic and out of control.” Senior Alex Scanlan added, “Eve been here since fourth grade, and I still haven’t rung that bell.”

Homecoming ’92 On the cold morning of October 17, KLHT athletes arrived at school anxiously anticipating a day of vic tory. The day began with the v a rs ity boys so c c e r game. The guys fought with the stamina that KLHT is renowned for; Jeff Kuffel e x p re ssed some anxi et y when he said, “ I wonder if t h e o t h e r t e a m is a n y good?” The girls were pre pared for their soccer game as well. Anna Murphy ex claimed, “ I’m psyched! and I want to win!” The KLHT volleyball champions rolled

over S a c r e d H e a r t and Mo l l y V o s b u r g h c o m mented, “ It was an easy game.” At twelve o’clock, th e f i e l d h o c k e y t e a m showed their stuff and be fore the game Alicia Ellis muttered, “ I’m excited be cause 1 think we’ll win.” The football game culmi nated this exciting day, with a 42-16 vic to ry over Dwight-Englewood. Max M i l l e r s a i d , ‘ ‘ w e ’ re pumped!” As usual, many alumni came back to visit, and all involved enjoyed themselves. What a day!

The Performing Arts The performing arts at KLHT have provided our student body and audience with e nj oyme nt . Dur i ng first semester, the drama club put on two perfor mances. The first perfor mance, a one-act play di rected by Carolyn Buzanoski, starred Steven Valassis, Melissa Minoff, Alicia Nisberg, Deedee Dorf, and Dempsey Collins. The sec ond performance, directed by Mrs. Forster, starred Sa nj i t DeSi l va, La ur e n Hughes, Tenisha Ramsey, Paola Lopez, Catherine Go mez, and Kevin Devogel. Each performer made his or her mark up on stage, and entertained the audience. The talent show this year brought new faces as well as

veterans of the performing arts. Jamie Shulman said, “ It’s hard work, but it’s fun!” The whole night ran smoothly. Kevin Devogel said, “The show went well; there were some technical difficulties.” As the sound technician Jason Campbell commented,“ I’m just glad I’m not on stage.” Each performer had a lot of cour age and determination. Mr. Huester added, “ I enjoyed watching the kids, they are all great performers. They looked beautiful and the show was excellent.” Mr. Hu e s t e r coul d not have summed it up better. Mr. Karlan ended by saying, “The Shooting Stars was a success!”

Warning: Romance is in the Air . . . A r o u n d t he K L H T halls between classes you can usually spot a couple in deep conversation or in an embrace. There aren't many existing couples and the sta tus of relationships is al ways changing. That is what makes life at KLHT excit ing. Valentine’s Day was special this year because the seniors worked incredibly hard selling carnations to all of the students. They

ended up selling over 450. Our school really comes to gether where love and ro mance are concerned. The student council also demon strated an interest in ro mance. They handed out a survey to match up couples in t h e h i g h s c h o o l . It worked out spectacularly and people were amused by some of the students that they were matched up with . . . even Mr. Van Vechten

Warning: Students at KLHT are politically aware This year the students at KL H T became involved wi t h t he e l e c t i o n . Mr s Grant & Ms Dubitsky led the high school students in activities to increase their a wa r e n e s s and to al l ow them to understand the im portance of the campaigns. Some of these act i vi t i es were numerous assemblies, videotapes and rallies. We were all fortunate to have the former first lady, Bar

bara Bush speak at the Ital ian Center next door to KLHT. The Secret Service men scared some of us be cause they were hidden in the woods of our school. However, many students for and against Bush attended rallies outside the Italian Center, joining many others who were there for a spe cific cause. The students at KL HT are pol i t i cal l y aware.

Warning: Strict Uniform Enforcement Everybody knows that KLHT employs a uniform. But, what is that dress code? Does anybody really know? Does anybody really care? As long as a guy is wearing a blazer and a tie or a turtleneck, he is in uniform. Sneakers - no problem, they are easily overlooked. Black jeans - who can tell the difference? If you ask a girl what her uniform is, she will tell that she can essentially wear anything she wants, as long as it does not involve denim or leather. Yet, to many girls this uniform is too restrictive. With all the variety in the articles of clothing that are worn, there is ample room for confusion. How can it be called a uniform if everybody is dressed so differently? Also, could it be possible that Mr. Hudson’s assortment of exotic ties would qualify as uniform?

WARNING: EAT AT YOU OWN RISK Those who choose to dine in the cafeteria, be warned. You are risking your very life by eating there. The problem is not food poisoning or the spread of disease by bad broccoli, but rather aliens. Yes, there is reason to believe that the cafeteria has been taken over by aliens whose sole purpose is to overrun the planet Earth. There have been strange occurrences which serve as evidence for this claim. One female student, who requested to remain anonymous, described an extraterrestrial encounter: “ I was sitting down to eat the calzone I had just bought. I went to cut it, and the calzone jumped up to bite me, as if it were possessed. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident. The cafeteria has long been a place of mystery. No one is able to explain why the chairs are not all the same color, why the tables appear and disappear, and why underclassmen have been found sitting in the senior area. These latest discoveries of alien life only add to the mystery.

Warning! Victory is in Sight! Throughout the 1992/1993 school year, the KLHT ath letic teams have shown that victory is their number one priority. This year has been particularly rewarding. The 1992-1993 varsity volleyball team captured the FAA vic tory, placing number one. These seven girls had less depth than all of their com petitors, but they were per sistent. Thi s persistence paid off with a banner for

the KLHT gym, commemo rating their win, and a large trophy. The Viking football team showed that they knew the true meaning of victory this year with a record of 7-1 out on the field. Under the l eader s hi p of Coac h Orio, Coach Wright, and Coach Greer, the Vikings were champions, and vic tory became reality. We hope this tradition of win ning never ends.

A smile is quite a funny thing, It wrinkles up your face And when it is gone, you never find Its secret hiding place But far more wonderful it is To see what smiles can do. You smile at one, he smiles at you, And so one smile makes two. Varsity Football This year the varsity football team came into its own. The team posted a remarkable record of seven wins versus one loss. Additionally, many of these victories were by large margins. Senior quarterback and captain Scott Trupchak led the mainly option-based offense. Senior fullback and captain Rashidi Lewis and junior Basil Greenwood were the principal weapons out of the backfield. The line featured senior Joe Hart, junior Steve Valassis, and sophomores Marc Hoffman and Alex Vandervort. Newcomers Michael Edwards, Adrien Blanc, Lass Davis, Greg Vlamis and Aaron Johnson joined Evan Kropp and Graham Ruffels as receivers and tight ends. The team was successful because it was able to work as a unit both on offense and defense. The team also has enough young talent that it will be able to remain dominant in the future.

Varsity Volleyball Although the Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team was small in numbers, it was large in talent. The team posted a thirteen and one record and won their first league championship by defeating Greens Farms in the final game of the tournament. Because the team was predominantly seniors, there was no shortage of leadership. Carolyn Buzanoski, Victoria Bush, and Molly Vosburgh enjoyed great success and were rewarded with All-FAA status. Junior Kyoko Ishida and seniors Danielle Cort-Werner, Claribel Alonso, and Pamela Blomberg also contributed a lot towards the team’s success.

Boys’ Soccer The Varsity Soccer team began to come into its own this year. The team posted five wins against seven losses, but this record does not indicate the amount of growth that occurred during the season. With impressive victories against Hamden Hall, Greens Farms, and St. Lukes, the soccer team proved that it was able to compete with and outplay play-off level teams. The team was led by senior co-captains Lance Tammero and Anthony Guevara, and newcomers Jon Susperregui, Pedro Fatas, and Marc Levitt were able to make the transition into the system. With young players like sophomore goalie Paul Ferarro, Mark Edwards, Nick Stavrides, and Matt Zung it would appear that Coach Lamm and Coach Whittaker will continue to lead the team to success in the future.

Girls’ Soccer The Girls Varsity Soccer team will never suffer from a a lack of enthusiasm under Coach Casanova. This year’s team was a very new girls’ soccer team after having lost ten players from last year. The team did have some success this year, but more importantly the girls learned a lot about soccer and had a lot of fun. The strength of the team was its defense led by captains Paige Dusault and Marina Supple. Michelle Miner, Malen Gage, Anna Murphy, and captain Heather Oppel added offense. Madison Adams and Abbie Zuidema saved just about everything in sight as they shared the season in goal. The team also continued to dominate its heated rivalry with the JV boys’ soccer team.

Cross The Boys' Varsity Cross Country team achieved many of its goals this year. With a three and three record in the FAA, the team posted its ninth consecutive season without a losing record. Led by seniors Sean Gallagher, John Dickerson, and Jason Cole, the team posted victories over league rivals Rye Country Day, St. Lukes, and Harvey. Freshmen Brett Simon, Colin Wallace, Ayaz Nanji, and Brian Monk all displayed great promise. Sean Gallagher earned all-league status by finishing third in the league championship race. On the Girls’ Varsity Cross Country team, Beth Van Dusen finished fourth in the girls championship race and earned All FAA status. The other Varsity Girls’ Cross Country runners that shared in the success of the season were Katie Draper, Kirstie Baker, and Charlotte Christensen.

Field Hockey This year's girls' varsity field hockey team had an exciting season. The offense featured senior captain and All-FAA player Alex Scanlan and sophomores Molly Midkiff and Lara Corrente. Cassandra Patterson, the other captain, provided energy and enthusiasm from the link position. The defense was anchored by senior Debbie King and sophomore Deedee Dorf. Freshmen Lauren Hughes, Claire Schwartz, Dana Siomkos, and Kristin Sparks all gained valuable experience and contributed a great deal to the team. The team won some very close games, but wound up missing the play-offs by a small margin.

1992 I love you, Mom

'T here is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time a time

to be born and a time to die, to plant and a time to uproot, to kill and a time to heal, to tear down and a time to build, to weep and a time to laugh, to mourn and a time to dance, to scattter stones and a time to gather them, to search and a time to give up, to keep and a time to throw away, to tear and a time to mend, to be silent and a time to speak, to love and a time to hate, for war and a time for peace

and a time to commence. This is your time! Congratulations Class of 1993 -from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 -Jeff and Sally Vosburgh

To Cassandra, Today is a very special day, for you are saying good-bye to a world that is safe and secure. Here you have had a world that is filled with Joy and Laughter. You are about to take a journey on what may be one of Life’s Greatest Challenges. Cassandra, you will no longer see through the eyes of a child, but through the eyes of a young woman. You must not be afraid of what you see. You must not be discouraged by what you see. You must not be distracted by what you see. These things, Cassandra, will help to prepare you for Life’s True Test. For each lesson learned today will give you confidence for the decisions that you will make tomorrow. Congratulations - Good Luck Love, Mom and Brian

To Our unFortunate Son: As you prepare to leave our little town, can you picture what will be so limitless and free? When you think back on all the things you’ve learned in high school, may you not wish you didn't know now what you didn’t know then. Remember, you did get through. Don’t get caught up in yesterday, soon your fortunes will be made. May you not run against the wind but rather sail on a summer breeze. May fantasy become reality, for to everything there is a season that turns all life into a circle. No matter if you’re born a king or a pawn, don’t eat at a restaurant located next to a pond. If everybody’s talking at you, and people have a tendency to dump on you, and life seems to be a mystery without any clues, the pontiff says there’s a better life out there. We put you on a highway and the sign says C.A.S.E. The Big Fat Ogres

Congratulations, Jon, on a great year in America! We are proud of your accomplishments. Love, Mom and Dad and your sister Edurne

Dear Graham,

How do you measure success? To laugh after and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, a redeemed social condition, job well done; To know even one other life has breathed easier because you have lived....... This is to have succeeded.

Love,

Mom and Dad Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” From “ P.S. I Love You.” With best wishes from the Parents’ Arts Council.

WE Dl D IT!!!!The yearbook is a culmination of the ideas of many important people. It would not be complete without thanking all of them. As the editor-in-chief, I was thrilled to work with Jason Cole, Victoria Bush, Carolyn Buzanoski, Lance Tammero, Adrien Blanc, Jamie Shulman, and Phil Holzer. These editor all went beyond the call of duty. There were others who lent a hand or stayed at school late typing and they need to be recognized: Mike Edwards, Jeff Grunbergh, Ayaz Nanji, Brent Simon, Deedee Dorf, Brett Holster, Abbie Zuidema, Jo Vosburg, Cassandra Patterson, Anna Murphy, Alicia Nisberg, Claribel Alonso, Alex Scanlan and everyone else who pitched in (especially Mr. Pusack for all those times he saved us). The book took a lot of effort and creativity, and we hope you will take pride in our efforts. Finally, on behalf of our whole staff, I want to thank our advisor Mrs. Kweskin. Throughout the process, she fervently stood by us and helped us learn. She has been both a friend and a mentor. Thank you again! Pamela Blomberg- Editor-in-chief
