Mr. Paul Beresford-Hill Headmaster

The Class of 1997 of King & Low-Heywood Thomas School has distinguished itself in ways which mark its members as scholars, athletes, and concerned citizens. You have provided me with broad and diverse images of the school I have been called to serve, and your insights and perspectives will remain with me, as they will with the entire faculty. Even though I have only known you for one year, I hope that you will build upon the ties and friendships which you have formed here over many years. The college experience will be an exciting and challenging one for all of you. You will find, however, that the base of your education, provided by KLHT, will be your most enduring foundation, something you will build upon as you discover more about yourselves and embark on making life and career choices. Homecoming in five, ten, twenty or more years will be just that—a return to a family which has nurtured and cared for you. Treasure your teachers and those others who have made it so, be true to the values and principles which they have shared with you, and occasionally reflect not only on the lessons learned, but on those things you did not accomplish. Because when I look back on my own high school experience I still hear the echoes of advice and admonition from my own teachers and friends and realize just how insightful and valuable those voices were—and how, after the passage of so many years, they can still teach me something. On behalf of the entire school community I wish you all great success in the years ahead. Patd Beresford-Hill

Mr. A1 Orio has done wonders for this school. He has taught the students that hard work and com mitment are what bring people success and happi ness in the world. Besides being Dean of Students, Mr. Orio has been an extremely successful coach and head

of the athletics program. Cer tainly the success of the foot ball team this year could not have occurred without the guidance and leadership of Coach Orio. It is for these rea sons that, on behalf of the Class of 1997, the Yearbook is dedicated to Mr. A1 Orio.

STUDENT EVENTS V a r ie d activities offer students numerous opportunities in school. Our three student publications, The Chronicle, Indelible Ink, and Kaleidoscope, keep everyone busy and working hard. Community service clubs such as LDP and SADD allow students to give back to their communities and to help those less fortunate than themselves. The Fishing Club, the Lax Club, and the Outdoors Club give students a chance to enjoy themselves and have fun. Student Council, always active, gave the students a voice and represented their ideas and thoughts. Learning about our school's admissions policies, the Key Club provided student guides for Open Houses and for visiting students. The Art Club and the Drama Club give students a chance to express their artistic abilities. The United Cultures Club celebrates the diversity in our school.

CLASS TRIPS Rain and Other Stuff T h e ninth grade went to Camp Hillcroft in Billings, NY. During the three-day stay, they were divided into groups and participated in various activities that involved cooperation and teamwork. Despite the rain, the effort was made to maintain high spirits and accomplish many goals. The tenth grade class went to Mystic Seaport. The trip to Mystic was not only a good bonding experience, but also educational. They had a chance to visit many interesting places, including a historical whaling ship called the Charles W. Morgan. They learned a great deal about the surrounding town and its history The eleventh grade did not quite know what to expect when they arrived at the Episcopal Retreat Center in Ivorytown, Ct. What they got was three days of bonding in the adverse elements of bad weather and crammed restrooms. The entire trip was geared toward encouraging the concept of team work and togetherness. Despite the choice of travel agency and its failure to provide adequately, there were many positive aspects to the senior trip to Pennsylvania. They saw the Liberty Bell, the U.S Mint, Amish country, and a great deal of rain. They had a chance to visit one of the largest malls in the nation. Next they spent their last day roaming around South Street (Philadelphia's version of Greenwich Village).

B ig W h e e l Big Wheel was a man who helped to make the senior trip everything that it was. He was a big man with a big heart who loved his barbecued ribs. The seniors will neverforget his famous quote, ‘The roads are too slippery. Sit down! I can’t control the bus.” ■ " L e ft : Ryan Supple and

FIRST THIRTIES... Celebration of History!!! On November 15,1996, the entire population of King & Low-Heywood Thomas took part in the First Thirties cel ebration. Today was the day where people could dress up as famous figures of the first thirty years of the twentieth century. There were political figures, athletes, "flappers," comedians, film stars, aviators, gangsters, and others who performed that day. Some people gave speeches that were characteristic of their personae; others performed humorous skits. The day was filled with laughs, and appreciation for the past that most of us did not live in. It was an opportunity for students to have fun, and also learn about their country. The Music Theatre class sang songs including "Sister Suf fragette", "Anything G oes", and "Varsity Drag" to name a few. The whole group sang with enthusiasm. Mr. Wilcoxen, Mr.Morosoff, and Mr.Lynch put on a poetic gangster spoof. Administration, faculty, students and parents all worked together for the occasion. It was a way for the students to realize their fundamental right of learning history. The skill of the performers showed very well that history was alive and well at KLHT.

PERFORMING ARTS In the theater below the cafeteria, the per足 forming arts of King and Low-Heywood Tho足 mas school take place. This year, we had a First Thirty Celebration, with students and faculty dressed as figures from the first thirty years of the twentieth century. Students were treated to skits, speeches, and dances. After the celebration, the school watched a riveting performance of Ah Wilderness! put on by stu足 dents from the Upper School. The celebration was able to bring together students from all divisions, united in their appreciation of the arts. This winter, the musical Guys and Dolls will be performed. Everyone is looking for足 ward to the musical and Mrs. Libonati's great directing.

FALL SHOW Ah Wilderness!: A Triumph The fall production for 1996 was Eugene O' Neill's com edy, Ah Wilderness! As always, the arts department put together another success. To tie in to the theme of the First Thirties celebration that took place on the day of the perfor mance, the arts department chose a relevant play that en abled the students to exercise their natural talents. Many student volunteers wanted to be involved, from set painting to tech, from sound to lights. Other students auditioned for the actual roles. Then, as always, the cast and crew went to work, putting in hour after hour of sometimes exhausting rehearsal time. Although the people had only months to rehearse, they were expected to put on a three-act play that involved com plex dialogue. Fortunately, the performers and the backstage crew were ready on the day of the performance, when the whole school was invited to the premiere of KH FT's Ah Wilderness! Eater that night, an encore performance was held, espe cially for parents who eagerly wanted to see their children perform on or off stage. Fortunately, the entire production proved to be an enor mous success. It's wonderful to have such depth in our student body.

WINTERSHOW Mellifluous Melodies The Holiday Show was the most successful show this school has seen in a long time. There was a lot of participation on the students' part, and there are a lot of memories. For example, the Upper School chorus performed its rendition of The Hallelujah C horus"and"G loria." Besides singing, Janette Ponticello played a lovely piece on the piano which was acted out in a scene by the Music Theater Workshop. This setting of a homeless person in a city really made the students of KLHT realize how lucky they are to have families and warmth through the holiday season. In addition to this, the three music teachers performed (as the "three sopranos") their own version of a holiday song. In honor of the annual school tradition, "The Twelve Days of Christm as" was presented by both the performers and the audience. The night would not have been complete without the yearly visit from Santa Claus equipped with plenty of candy canes. In all, the celebration was a complete success. Everyone had a great time.

SPORTS CORNER K in g and Low-Heywood Thomas School's sports program has met nothing but success this year. It is wonderful to be a part of the school at a time when teams are qualifying for important tournaments and showing the rest of the league that they are tough teams. The enormous success of the sports program has generated so much excitement and enthu siasm from the KLHT fans. Certainly, we are a school that has school spirit in abundance. Bravo to the athletes.

FACULTY Inside the classrooms of King and LowHeywood Thomas, faculty and students coex ist and learn from each other. The teachers are the backbone of our school. Whether giv ing a lecture or coaching a team, they are always available to the students. Teachers are available for extra help, and are concerned for every student's well-being. At times de manding, they realize that they are respon sible for shaping the generation of tomorrow. That is a big task, but our Faculty is certainly up to it. Friendly, responsible, and kind, the teachers set the standard in our school, re specting every student and truly caring. They stay late, advising clubs and serving as rolemodels. Many teachers can be found in their offices, giving extra help or working on today's lesson plan. Always friendly and smil ing in the halls, they create a warm learning environment.

STUDENTS IN SCHOOL N o th in g can beat our students! With over 600 students in Upper, Middle, and Lower schools including Kindergarten and Pre-Kin dergarten, our school has grown over time. A new tradition this year, the Headmaster's As sembly, brings our whole school together. Once a month, the whole school assembles in the Upper School gym, in formal uniform, and hears what has been going on in the dif ferent divisions. The school chorus, composed of students from every division, performs, exhibiting their talent and dedication. This new practice allows our school to function more as a whole, rather than as fragmented, separate pieces. The assemblies allow us to share our good news and exciting events with everyone in our school!

SENIORS G r a d e s and test scores were what counted in the first semester, when we all were worry ing about the inevitable college process. But, thanks to a bunch of caring teachers and col lege counselors, we seniors were able to sur vive the year. High school is tough, but in the end, it is worth it. As soon as all the hard work is over, we, as mature students, are able to reflect upon the dedication and commit ment that we exemplified as a group. O f course, we will be known as the "trend-set ters." And the impact that we made will be felt long after we have left this school.

A aron Sn y d er The end...Finally, it's over. Thank you to everyone who helped me, and even to those who never even tried. Life is a long journey, and sometimes you fall off a cliff and die... DB-keep working too hard, wherever you are. EAK-three years, and we definately aren't in Kansas anymore. Four more, and who knows? SR-life will always suck, but at least now it can suck somewhere else. Maybe hell isn't quite forever. VS-Quiero comer tu caballo y tu perro sin los arboles. Good luck, amigo... JC-Penn St4-ever- or not. When you just can't run another sprint, just say, "I AM THE BAD MAN!". PK-How's it gonna feel to lose for four years in a row? JD-War is only fun against your friends. JAZ-you asked, so I'm writing. Love 'ya. BDG-Keep running, keep winning... PG-always in spirit, never to be seen again. BF, JC, NK, DJ, ES, SS, TN, JH, SO, and others-Have fun next year........ Enough initials. To my friends, mentioned or not, I wish luck. To everyone else, may your lives be filled with sorrow. But enough good cheer. Varsity Football, Baseball, and all that stuff. 54 If you need me, you know where I'll be: WILLIAMS COLLEGE, WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Students have gone around and asked differ ent stores, businesses, and companies if they wanted to advertise in this year's Yearbook. The following ads were placed by a variety of people. Many were submitted from the par ents of this year's Senior class. The parents submit baby pictures, inspirational messages, and write loving anecdotes . Luck is sent for college and beyond. This year's Freshman class could give the Seniors some advice on what it's like being the youngest class in school. Truly, what goes around comes around. The Juniors scan the ads, imagining what embarrasment their parents will subject to them next year. Many Seniors themselves place ads, as a way of giving friends and fam ily loving messages. Montages of pictures are created, representing the four years of high school life. Enjoy!
