Evolve The theme of the 2017 yearbook is " evolve." After our 150th anniversary last year, we now have an opportunity to continue to grow and evolve as a community. Whether a member of the Class of 2017, or the Class o f2030, we all have a journey of evolution every day, every week, every month, and every year. As you experience the memories which exist within these pages, we hope that you reflect on your past and how much you ^ have evolved. Our hope is that you continue to grow not only as students, hut also as individuals.

D E D I C ATI O N "When L H T and King first merged, the two faculties eyed each other warily at first. Gradually, through Department Head meetings, committees, and other occasions, I got to know Bill as a funny guy and a passionate educator. I taught his kids and he taught m y kids. Nothing helps you know the quality o f a teacher quite like havingyour children as his students. My daughters loved Bill, not only because he was funny and entertaining, but also because he was a great and ernpathetic teacher. H e always found a way to get through to a student. A nd we always had good laughs together. Congratulations on this dedication, Bill!" -Connie Nichols "Mr. Wallace bolds a certain place in the minds of the Class of 1983. Some of us remember him as a towering figure of a man when we were in middle school. But as we got older and bigger we realized that he was not. In fact, he has always remained the same in physical stature and in spirit. Mr. William Wallace has always been concerned with the efforts of our class. He has tried to see that we, as students, learn who we are and what our role in life should be. All of us have had him for at least one class. Although he has only taught us in math, his teaching has reached far beyond the classroom. He has tried to instill in us a feeling of maturity and, above all, self-confidence. We shall never forget his comical efforts in the classroom and we shall never forget his 'lessons' to us. For these reasons and many more the Class of 1983 has earned a special friend in Mr. William Wallace and that is why we would like to give him a special thanks." 1983 Kingsmen Yearbook. -

"Dear Mr. Wallace, It is rare to have a teacher like you who has made such a profound and lasting impact on so many students. / want to thank you for teaching me to like math. It was your kindness, passion, and dedication that inspired me and many more students to pursue math at a higher level. Thank you Mr. Wallace for all o f your time, effort, math jokes, and old school rock and roll extra credit. I wish you the best, and thank you for inspiring me."

- Stephanie Schwartz,' 17

WILLIAM WALLACE "Bill's home away from home was King School from 1977 to 2016. H e taught at King School, moved to Hamden for a short period, and found his way back again to his favorite place. A ll three o f his children graduated from the school and he delighted in their strengths, but did his best to give them their space in the building. H e had his standards set high and many students quickly learned that it paid off to get to class on time unless they wanted a little workout o f pushups. He was never too busy to give extra help and found great pleasure in helping his students learn. O f course, we all remember his jokes. He always seemed to have one that he would share with his class. One o f his many loves was softball and it was rare to not fin d him in the bleachers cheering the team on. To his colleagues and his students, he embodied the fourvirtues o f King School: Integrity, Kindness, Perseverance and Respect. His presence is missed in our halls every day. We thank him for his dedication and service to King School." - Cathy Mishkin

"Mr. Wallace, Your dedication to the King community is something we w ill always remember. You have inspired so many students and faculty throughout your time here. Between your knowledge o f math and your hilarious sense o f humor, we w ill miss you. We wish you the best o f luck, and thank you for all you have done for us."

- Ella Bruck, '17

"The Dance o f Mathematics. One my favorite memories o f Bill Wallace was his humor and willingness to be a part o f the joy o f mathematics. As I taught my Honors Geometry next door to his classroom, 1 would reach a moment in talking o f advanced equations. A t a moments notice, I would ask Bill to come in and show his dance to help the students remember the shape o f the different equations in the students' future. He would twist his hips and move his arms as he spoke each equation.lt was so much fun".

Dear King Community,

IgliMlsf a

I’m honored to write a brief introduction to this yearbook. It is fitting that “evolve” is the theme that has been chosen for this 2017 edition. This is my 15th year in the school, j and I have seen many of these seniors evolve from Preschool, Lower School and Middle School. While you have not completed your evolution, you have certainly developed into an incredibly accomplished class. Your academic success and your outstanding record in the college process give as much evidence as is needed, but I would offer that there is even more powerful evidence in your contributions to our leadership programs, our service learning programs, and our multi-cultural and sustainability programs, as well as the broad range of programs we have in athletics, the arts, and beyond. And finally, this is a senior class that has evolved to become one of the most diverse, interesting, and contributory groups we have had here at the school in some time. Your strength resides in your differences, and it has been a true pleasure for me to watch as you have worked through those differences in productive and healthy ways. It’s time for you to move on now; the new beginning that college provides marks the start of another evolution for you. I am sure you are prepared. I know you are eager. I’m sure you will be successful, and we will miss you here at King.

Talent Show

' •- "

After a basketball game, people go there to take a sip. Don't let it drip or else you will slip.

In the Lower School, the students and faculty worked together to learn about the ways that they could become more powerful stewards of the environment. They tended to their garden, educated their community about food waste, and made great strides in conserving water and energy. Environmental Ant and his buddies continued to provide inspiration for our quest to protect their environment, as did the work of the PYE club. The members of the Protect Your Environment Club met each week to investigate and enlightening the King community on respect for our earth and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

King Cares

The Lower School students work with King faculty and staff to help others in our community. Students bake cookies for the New Covenant Soup Kitchen. Students also discover the benefits of getting to know elders at the Sunrise Assisted Living and The Villa, a skilled nursing home. Lower School students also play, read and do art projects with children at the Westover Preschool and Franklin Commons.

Global Education & Diversity

King’s Lower School faculty brought awareness of our global community through performing arts, celebrations, and selected readings. Multiculturalism is woven into the fabric to prepare our young minds for the world.

The Lower School students studied Indian culture and arts with mehndi and diya projects.

King Lower School students spent the year learning about multiculturalism and inclusion. We focused on lived experiences of the many cultures that exist in our community. Using our Diversity Policy Statement as a guide, we work to enhance the learning experience for each and every member of the Lower School community. By honoring cultural differences and intellectual diversity, we create a vibrant learning community where each person is valued.

The girls of King Field Hockey had an immensely successful season. Behind the leadership of captains Aimee Madigan, Jayne Tully, Claire Morris, and Ella Bruck, the Vikings fought their way to a 13-7 record, culminating in a NEPSAC Tournament berth.

"Over the past four years, the field hockey team has had three different coaches. The frequent change in leadership gave our team a great opportunity to come together and rely on each other on and off the field. Our unique team chemistry paired with great new leadership from Coach Prince is what gave our team the best season King Varsity Field Hockey has had since 2012." Ms. Sadlowsky s Letter to Seniors Dear Class of 2017, When I think of your class, I certainly think of artists, scholars, athletes, actors, debaters, and on and on - yours is such a diversely talented group. I think of how ready you are to move on to the next steps on your educational journeys; I think of the impact you’ve had on your classmates and the larger King community; I think about how you might stay connected to King School and what you might be like when I meet you again in the future. I also think of how much you’ve grown and how fast it all happened.

t

This year’s theme is “Evolve” - a word that for me evokes traditional understandings (and misunderstandings) o f “ evolution” : change, growth, adaptation. Certainly you’ve been exposed to the scientific understandings of biological evolution. But the word “evolve” comes from the Latin volvere, which generally means “to roll” or “to turn around.” According to most sources, words that come from the Latin root volv (like “revolve,” for example) communicate the sense of turning or traveling. One source puts it this way: “To evolve, or grow or develop out of something else, is to unroll from a source.” By the seventeenth century, it seems, “to evolve” meant to “develop from something simple into something complex.

ir I’m not sure you’ve all developedtrom something simple into something complex during your time at King - after all, I think humans are pretty complicated no matter what stage of development they’re at - but I can certainly say that yoiifve all learned to manage complexity in a way that gives me great hope for the future. The classes you’ve taken; the distinctions you’ve earned (and even developed); the games, championships, debates, rtieets, productions, papers, simulations, tests, labs, projects, and relationships that demanded so much thought and intelligence and perseverance - all that you’ve experienced at King has provided you with opportunities to make sense of yourselves and this amazing, crazy, maddening, exciting, beautiful world we live in. When I listen to you argue points, ask good questions, take care of each other and people you don’t even know, work hard, seek the truth no matter how scary or unpopular, read challenging texts, sing, run, and generally live well, I know we are raising a generation capable o f thriving in a complex world. I am proud of you; I expect great things o f you. Thank your teachers for the experiences they’ve created for you and the gift of learning they’ve given you. A s you move on to your next challenges, know that we are cheering for you and that we are here to support you, even from a distance. Never be afraid of complexity. Always look at the world with your eyes wide open. And dig deep! There’s always a reason.

Sincerely, Ms. Sadlowsky

CR: You were my first friend at King and volleyball pre-season was so hard, but we survived it together. High School’s been like a long pre-season, but we’ve stayed strong through it all. BE: Thank you so much for making me comfortable with dance again. Even when I go off to performing at the Grammys and I get assigned a choreographer, no one will compare to you. CS: I’m glad that I got to know you. Don't be afraid to come out of your shell; you are hilarious CB: You’re an amazing person. I'm gonna miss ranting with you about everything. Shady Bunch: 1love you guys so much. 1 never thought that I’d find a squad of my own in high school, but y’all came out of nowhere, and we all got so close so fast. I can’t even put into words what this group means to me. Even though I’m going off to college I know that the OG salty J fan club will never die. Scotland & Theatre Squad: I love all of you so much. 1 love the family that we’ve created, and I can’t even express how much I’m going to miss all of you. To my Scotland fam even tho it’s all ogre now, we’ll still always be DuncanLove. To my theatre fam y’all are so amazing and talented; never forget to love yourselves and love your art.

JSR

To the class of 2017: Walk proudly into the future, the known and unknown; it is ours to be explored and claimed. BJR: Thanks for being my best friend through thick and thin. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. You are one of the tough, and you are already going. Staying in touch is a given. 1 am jealous of you and your Orange men’s basketball team. 1 cannot wait to see your name under some PolySci articles keeping our “leaders” in check. CJB: Thanks, man, for helping me get through all the rough spots. You were always there to help, and I will never forget that. If you don’t stay in touch, I’ll be on your doorstep to check up... Best of luck with tus journey’s. RAH: My fellow enginerd. Thanks for all the laughs and great times over the years. Whether it is Minecraft technic rockets or actual rocket fuel, it has been a blast. Keep those trains in line and under budget for me. JGT: Wingmen never fly that far away. Thank you for always helping me out when times got tough. We’ll be working on projects together in the future... staying in contact is a given. Best of luck with all your future planes and always shoot for the stars. FM: Thanks for always being the calm, collected, and rational person in the room. You have set me straight multiple times, and for that 1thank you. Hopefully, befriending me was not a mistake. Tus journey’s son muy importante. Continue pushing into the unknown. JDH, NC, RNJ, KL, CS, KZ, SKS, MG, HL, CMS, MR, AO: Thanks for all the laughs, advice, and fun over the years. It has been one heck of a ride. Mom and Dad: Thanks for all the countless hours of work, advice, and support. I do not know what 1 would have done without you both: probably nowhere as much.

RNJ

Mom and Dad: Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to attend King. These amazing past four years would not have been possible without your kindness and generosity. Additionally, thank you for always supporting me in any endeavor that I have decided to embark on! Your encouragement has helped me grow as an individual and make the most out of my time in high school! JD Hock, Jonathan Richter, Richard Haight, Carter Borchetta, Karl Zoubek, Spencer Gold, Megan Glinka, Cara Shattan, Nisha Chandra, Kayla Lichtman, and Femkc Munting: Thank you for your friendship and for the many memories that we shared over the past four years. I am so happy that I got to meet you guys and spend many weekends hanging around town or traveling to the city or simply going to a nearby deli. Let’s all stay in touch as we move on to bigger things in college! Love you guys (: JD Hock: Thank you for helping me lead Viking Investment Partners. Together, we grew this club into an institution at King with passionate followers —something that I never would've dreamt about my sophomore year. 1 couldn’t have done it with anyone else. Now let’s take these skills to the real world! Bill Pusack: On the off chance that you get a copy of the yearbook and stumble across this... King has not been the same without you! You brought a certain energy and enthusiasm every day that radiated from your room. I will never forget the many times that I sat in your classroom as a confused freshman not understanding any of the material that you were rapidly writing on the board. However, 1 can assure you that your class prepared me to tackle my future high school math classes. Additionally, I am glad that we formed such a tight relationship and that I was able to have you as my advisor for two years. You were always there to support me and provide advice for the college process. I will never forget our many discussions about math, school, or simply life in general. I hope you are having an amazing retirement!

Not only is Frederique driven to develop an)J strengthen students’ use of the French language, she is excited to connect the content to culture, literature, and her life experiences. IN

MEMORIAM

Griff Titus gave 34 plus years of his life to King. He gave unconditionally, for he considered King his family, his children every child that came through the King doors. The generosity of his gift will live forward for many years to come.

"When I think of wisdom, humor, sharp insights, honesty, bravery and faithfulness, there is only one Griff Titus. Thank you for all the years of our friendship. You were a true man in all the best sense. Good values, kindness, and most of all generosity. You can't buy character, and you can't buy class; you, my friend, had it all. God bless you forever, for I'm sure you are sharing those one-liners with the 'real' big guy, and He's loving it. Till we meet again, my dear friend." —Lise Leist

"I have a photograph of Griff on my wall from 8 or 9 years ago. It's a picture of my son sitting on his lap while Griff drove him on his lawnmower. Jonathan referred to him as Uncle Griff and Griff got a kick out of giving him rides." —Thomas Decker "The best memory of Griff that I have is when he grew a monster-sized pumpkin! He was so excited to show it to me. He gave my husband a few pumpkin seeds to grow on our farm, but we were never able to grow a pumpkin as large as Griffs. The man had a talent, that is for sure! Griffy, you were a wonderful friend; rest in peace!" —-Jeanine Haberny
