HALO 1987

What is friendship? It is a combination of many things laughter, tears, sharing, loving, and having fun. Friends are people who are there when you need them; with a friend you can be yourself. Friendship is very important to every person’s life, and for that reason we have chosen it as our theme . We feel that friendship is a great part of the Class of 1987 and Low-Heywood Thomas. We hope to express these feelings through the song “You’ve Got a Friend.”

Low-Heywood Thomas School 1570 Newfield Avenue Stamford, CT

The Class of 1987 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Cesare, for all that she has done for the Senior class and LowHeywood Thomas. She inspired us by her “Escalator Education speech and has helped us to strive for the best that we can be. We will never forget her. The Class of 1987

Special Dedication

The Class of 1987 would like to recognize Madame Matkovich, a very special teacher, who we have all missed this year. We have missed your French classes, your stuffed ani mals, and your care. You’ll always have a place in all our hearts. Love, The Class Of 1987

When you’re down and troubled, and you need a helping hand, and nothing , oh nothing is going right. You close your eyes and think of me, and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest nights.

SENIORS : It was a hot summer day and no one was looking forward to going back to school, but the Class of 1987 was already there painting the Senior Room, in our colors of red and yellow. On the Friday before school began Mrs. Cesare had a welcome back picnic, where we all got reacquainted after our summer vacation. The fall term was busy for the seniors, attending college interviews and filling out applications. Once first semester exams were over, ten seniors went on internships, to find out what it was like to work in the real world. When they returned it was already March, and soon college acceptances came rolling in. Then the excitement really began, with preparations for the prom and gradu ation. W e’d like to thank you all for making Low-Heywood Thomas the warm and friendly place it is and giving us so many unique memories.

it was the worst of times, , it was the age of it was tne season of Light, toolishness it was the season of Darkness we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other wayCharles Dickens

Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all. George Benson

One afternoon these two souls met. And the souls talked and talked and a little bit of each soul was passed to the other. And the souls learned and grew together. But the souls had to go their separate ways, because life pulled them in such a way. But both souls knew that neither of them would ever forget the other one. They couldn’t. They would always be bonded at the soul.

If the sky above you should turn dark and full of clouds, and that old north wind should begin to blow, keep your head together and call my name out loud, now soon I will be knocking upon your door.

* * * * * * * * * * * * It all began on the tenth of September, a warm, hazy day we will all remember. Students came from far and near in anticipation of the new year. We all went to hear Mrs. Cesare’s speech, and to find out what the new faculty had to teach. The lockers had not yet arrived, and many students began to feel deprived. A month went by and the lockers came, but the students were more interested in a King School game. At Homecoming a field hockey game was played, some King guys came with their faces sprayed. The year went on with parties galoreHalloween, Holiday, Junior Party, and more. We were all psyched for Christmas break, but when we came back we had exams to take. Winter was long, but then came spring. We were looking forward to what vacation would bring. When we came back students were found trying to get a tan lying on the ground. By the end we were hearing congratulations for the seniors at their graduation.

LHT-KING PICNIC We started the year off right with a great LHT-King picnic. It united the two schools and really raised spir its. The event started off with a barbecue lunch and a chance for students to get to know each other or to get reacquainted.

After lunch, the classes got together to compete in kickball and volleyball. Overall, the freshmen won the kickball game and the seniors won the volleyball game. The final event was the tug-ofwar. The juniors won, but ru mor has it that the starting whistle was blown before the seniors were ready! Still, ev eryone had a great afternoon.

Come on you wimps!

we’re so excited!

TALENT SHOW The stars were certainly out on October 17th, the night of the Talent Show. There were a variety of performances rang ing from singing to dancing to instrument solos. The MCs were junior Pamela Galetzki and senior Carey Douglas. The show had representatives from every class and started with Heather Bay singing “ My Favorite Things.” Act one continued with many soloists and quite a few trios. The second act began with Deborah King doing one of the two dance numbers. The other was done by Jessica Ginsburg. Two of the real crowd pleasers were a mime done by Jon Bloom and Cecilia Vick and the LHT-King Band. The Band consisted of Alex Becker, Jon Bloom, Phil Seigenfeld, and William Krenz with Allison James and Scott DeFreitas doing vocals. The show ended with Carey Douglas singing “ Stormy W eather.” The entire evening was enjoyable for everyone involved, performers and audience alike.

dear Liza, dear Liza

HOMECOMING In addition, King School defeated St. Lukes with a victory of 8 to 6 in the traditional football game. Soccer was also played, but the game was cut short due to a fight. The final score was two goals for St. Lukes and one goal for King. After the games there was a Homecoming dance, where Lee Hermanson was named Homecoming Queen, and Jon Bloom was named King. This year a new spirit was generat ed by the students, faculty, and par ents. It created a unique participation, commitment, and life to this year’s Homecoming weekend.

■1

Homecoming began with the leaves on the ground, the chilly winds, and a fresh crisp smell in the air. Seeing famil iar faces of Alumni, winning the football game, and finding out who the Home coming King and Queen were just ad ded to the excitement. It brought a spe cial unity to LHT and King Schools, that can only be seen once a year. It all began with a Pep Rally led by the cheerleaders. Then, for the first time in the history of Low-Heywood Thomas School, a homecoming game of our own took place. The Varsity Field Hockey team played an exciting, sus penseful game against St. Lukes, finish ing up with one goal for LHT and one goal for St. Lukes.

O K. guys, it’s just a jump to the left and a step to the right!

The King’s Harem.

HALLOWEEN

Do you think I can pick up one of those King guys?

While last minute costume prep arations were going on throughout the school, the freshman class was down in the auditorium doing prep arations of their own for the tradi tional Halloween party. It was just the beginning of a very exciting day. The wedding procession began at 8 :1 5 a.m. with the lovely bride Sue Cesare and the handsome groom Bob Finsthwait following the always captivating wedding party. The ever eloquent Bartles and Jaymes presided over the cerem o ny.

Lady Liberty says- “ Do we have to let immigrants like that in?”

Next came the costume parade. While the song “ I Heard It Through the Grapevine” blasted from the speakers, the senior raisins danced across the stage. The mood quickly changed when Senora Rabassa’s sophomore babies crawled across, and then changed again when Michelle Fenton and Nadine Hudson rapped as Run DMC. The middle schoolers were also unique in their costumes with Gumby, dice, and imitations of upper classmen. The party continued through lunch for both the Middle and Upper Schools, with baked goods, music, and dancing. The prizes were awarded then too. Thanks to all the hard work of the ninth grade, the day was a big success.

TWELVE ANGRY JURORS

Don’t these guys know how to act?

The first drama production of the year was quite a success. The three act play, T w elve A ngry Ju ro rs, was well presented and enjoyable for everyone watching. The cast consisted of nine Low-Heywood girls and four King students, including sen iors Mike Mangano, Justin Cohane, Tina Jose, and Kathy Knox. Christine Frydenborg, a junior, also gave a good perfor mance. All in all, the play showed a tremen dous effort on the part of everyone in volved.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE What are the qualities of a leader? On Nov. 13, 14, 15, several LHT students found out at the Youth Leadership Confer ence. Sponsered by the Teen Life Center, the conference held over 2 0 0 students from all over Fairfield county. It featured motiva tional speakers such as: Dan Clark, Bobby Valentine, Linda Godwin, Terre Blair, and Dr. Stephen Glenn, all contributing to the theme of the conference, choose to lead. It was an inspirational weekend and a great experience for all who attended.

The holiday season was greatly cele brated this year with the Candlelight In strumental Concert, the Holiday Pro gram, and the tenth grade Christmas Par ty. The festivities began with the instru mental concert and a variety of popular Christmas and Chanukah songs by the Upper, Middle, and Lower school bands. The Holiday Program followed with par ticipation from the entire school. The highlight of the evening was the tradition al Hallelujah Chorus sung by the entire student body plus faculty. The celebration continued on the last day of school before vacation with the annual tenth grade Christmas Party. Mrs. Cesare gave a Christmas speech and the tenth grade did a skit. The party ended with the student body singing Silent Night.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMS

Big, bad, Brendon

I’m only Hooman Scratch and sniff

Ways not to fall asleep in class - Put toothpicks between your eyelids (Fred Flintstone style). - Shoot yourself in the armpit. - Write X-rated novels. - Create student surveys. - Make up this list. - Find some way to get kicked out. - Do twenty jumping jacks. - Leave.

Ways to get around the uniform - Wear an oversized trenchcoat. - Tell your teacher that your friend said it was a no uniform day. - Say, “ It was dark when I woke up.” - Say, “ Some foreign diplomats stole my clothes, tied me up, and dropped me out of a ten story window.” - Say, “ My mom was wearing my cord skirt, and my dad wanted to wear my kilt.” - Say it changed colors in the wash.

You know it’s a short Friday when - Half the class isn’t there. - You pretend not to understand the thirty minute periods. - The chocolate chip cookies are gone before you get there. - You can’t get out of your space at 1:08 because the parking lot is so crowded. - You’re late for fourth period class because you thought it was recess.

ACTIVITIES Hey ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend. People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you. They’ll take your soul if you let them. But don’t you let them.

This year’s band was smaller than others have been in previous years, but its small size did not take away from its great sound. Under the leadership of Mr. Den nis Hyde, the band reached new heights. The Christmas concert was one of the best in recent memory, with all three ensembles performing difficult music well. For the third straight year LHT sent a representative to Connecticut's All-State Festival. Ina Bort was select ed and performed on the viola. Selection to this festival demonstrates her high achievement in music. The 1986-87 school year proved to be an excellent one for the music program at LHT, and hopefully, the program will enlarge with time.

The Musical Theatre Club is made up of students who love to sing, dance, and per form. This year the group performed in the Come Catch Our Stars talent show, the Holi day Program, and the musical, Brigadoon, under the direction of Ann Ostrow. All the productions were a great success due to the involvement of this multi-talented group.

DRAMA CLUB

The 1 9 8 6 -1 9 8 7 school year was a successful one for the Drama Club. It took them about a month to rehearse for their November production “The Twelve Angry Jurors” directed by Mrs. Forester. In March they put on three one-act plays. Two of these plays were student directed. “ Sociability” was directed by Tina Jose with the assistance of Jon Bloom. “The Odd Couple” was directed by Micheal Mangano and “ No One Really Knows” was directed by Mrs. Forester.

Model United Nations is a class that con sists of dedicated and interested juniors and seniors. With the help of Mrs. Waters, we learn about foreign policy and oratorical techniques. I The Debate Club was formed this year because the student body felt that there was a need to discuss important issues. Their first debate was about the drinking age, whether it should be eighteen or twenty-one. Other issues of concern were abortion, ani mal experimentation, and the death penalty. The goal of the club is to stir emotions within the student body and to encourage them to express themselves. Hopefully this club will continue next year.

This club has been growing in popularity and this year it helped Low-Heywood Thomas in the library, the house, and the main office. It also helped the Student Council in fund rais ers such as food, toy and toiletry drives. The club members tried to give time twice a week to helping others in the school commu nity.

The Hey Day is the Low-Heywood Thom足 as newspaper. It gives students a chance to voice their opinions and catch up on current events, school issues, and LHT/King news. Because the Hey Day is student run, it re足 quires input from the entire school. Partici足 pation was very high this year with contribu足 tions from both the middle and upper school. The high level of participation and enthusiasm of the entire Hey Day staff helped to make the newspaper a success.

The Student Council was very active dur ing the 1 9 8 6 -1 9 8 7 year. The fall season started with the LHT/King Picnic. Home coming was held on October 24. In addition to the traditional soccer and football games, LHT participated for the first time in the athletic part of the day. Varsity hockey played St. Lukes to begin the activities. The day ended with a dance at King. The fall season ended with the Thanksgiving food drive to benefit Person-to-Person. The Christmas Dance kicked off the win ter season. A new DJ with videos and a laser light show gave a new perspective to the evening. Before the holiday break, the Council sponsored three drives. Food was gathered to benefit the Veteran Committee, and toys and toiletry articles were collected for the Correctional Facility. Once more LHT responded generously. In February, there was a Valentine’s Day dance, and in May, the Council sponsored the Spring Fling.

“ Special” is a word that is used to describe something one of a kind like a hug or a sunset or a person who spreads love with a smile and a kind gesture. “ Special” applies to something that is admired and precious and which never can be replaced. “ Special” is the word that bests describes you, Lee.

Speak to us of children And he said; Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you. And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not their thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

We love you Jen, and wish you the very best in life. Congratulations to you and your Class of ’87. Love Mom, Dad, and Josh

We grow great by dreams. Dreamers see things in the soft haze of a spring day, or in the red Fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them, nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true. - Woodrow Wilson

So don’t ever be caught “ Walking in the Rain” because “ Love is a Battlefield.” And “ When 1 Think of You,” I’ll remember that on the “Stairway to Heaven” you meet a lot of people that “Give Love a bad Name.” They always say “ I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On,” but your “ Living On a Prayer” so be aware with “ Every Breath You Take,” that “ Boys Will Be Boys.” “Some are “ Nasty Boys,” some have a “Crush on You,” and with some you have to wonder “ Is it Love Their After.” It’s “ Life in the Fast Lane.” Never forget that “You Don’t Have to Take Your Clothes off to Have a Good Time” and you don’t need “White Lines” to “ Dream On.” Keep a “Sledgehammer” nearby for protection and don’t listen to “ Rumors.” There’s a “ Rocky Racoon” in all of our lives that says “ I Would Die for You” but we’re “ Infatuated” and “All Cried Out.” So “Wave your Hands in the Air like You don’t Care” and know that life always gets better. In your adventures, “ Walk This Way” “ Like an Eg yptian,” but don't “ Shout” because wherever we go there is always a phone. We are “ Breaking the Chains” and going our seperate ways but remember we’ve been together “ For the Longest Time.” “So under stand don’t waste your time always searching for those wasted years. Face up make a stand, and realize your living in the golden years.” You guys are “ A Hard Habit to Break.” “I’ll Miss You.” Three Musketeers BFF Cokey

The production of this yearbook began even before school started. Several staff members went to a Josten’s workshop to learn how to put together this book. The work really began, though, as the first deadline loomed nearer. With a lot of hard work, late nights, and a little panic, all four deadlines were met. Thanks to this , you will all be able to remember 1 9 8 6 /1 9 8 7 in the years to come. W e’d like to thank Ana Wilson for helping us at the last minute with the copy, Petie for her organization, and Mr. Pusack for his room to destroy, his computers to dismantle, and his patience to try. Without their help this might have been the yearbook that never was.
