History of Volleyball The sport that we call Volleyball was invented by a P.E. teacher named William Morgan on Feburary 9th , 1895 in Massachusetts. He wanted to make a game simalir to both Basketball and Tennis. Once people started playing it, the game traveled around Massachusetts, though at that time it was not called Volleyball. Instead, people knew it as Mintonette. The name changed when a man called Alfred Halstead noticed some way of volleying, wich means that they kept passing the ball back and forth. He started calling it that, and soon the name just stuck. The first foreign country to adopt Volleyball was Canada in 1900. After Cananda a bunch of more countries started to play it, and it became pretty popular. In 1964, it was starting to be played as an Olympic sport. That year Japan won gold for the women's section.

Materials To play this fun sport you actually don't need much. The court needs to be 60ft by 30ft. If you are a woman, the height of the net needs to be 7 feet and 4 inches, while if you are a man the height needs to be 8 feet. Besides all that you need, of course, a ball. The indoor ones are usually white. What you wear also isn't too complicated. You need a shirt that isn't baggy, but that is still comfortable. Some people also wear knee pads and elbow pads, but if you want to wear those you need to make sure that they made specifically to play Volleyball. Random ones are usually too bulky.

The rules of Volleyball are kind of complicated, but once you understand them they aren't so complicated anymore. On each team there should be 12 people, though at a time only 6 are playing. They should be placed as 3 in the front and 3 in the back. The postions are the Setters, the Middleblocker, the Weekside Hitter, and the Libero.

Rules and How to play...

The Attackers are the ones who hit the ball to the other team's side. The Setter's job is to hit the ball into good places for the attackers to hit it over. The Middleblockers block the other team's hits. The Weekside Hitter is on the right side and is a backup attacker. The Liberos are subsitutes and are defense. They also usually deflect other team's serves. Hitters, Attackers, and Blockers are generally tall and jump high. The Setters and the Libero are agile and have control.

....Continued When it is a team's turn, one single player cannot hit the ball more than once. The team is also allowed 3 hits when it is their turn. At the begining of a game, a Volley determines who serves first. When a team wins a serve they rotate clockwise. Whoever has won the previous point gets to serve next. In a whole match, there are 5 little games in it. A team wins the first match when they get up to 25 points, but in order to win they have to be 2 points ahead. A team usually wins the whole match when they have won 3 of the 5 matches.

The Evolution of Volleyball Volleyball has evolved a lot from when it was first invented. For example, the net used to have to be 6ft by 6ft for everybody. The court had to be 25ft by 50ft. One rule that applied to women that does not exsist today is that so they wouldn't hurt their fingers is that they could catch the ball and then throw it to a teamates. Speaking about teamates, back then there could be an unlimited amount of people on a team. There was also only nine innings. We now don't call them innings but matches. Every team could also touch the ball as much as they wanted to when it was their turn. There also wasn't a specific type of ball used only for Volleyball. People would use any ball they wanted to use.
