Branching out: Downtown library’s redesign gets council approval
Apples for Easter Seals
By Bill Hutchins
Tessa Fox, 8, takes time out from apple picking to taste test a Lobo apple, during the 7th annual Apple Fest Harvest Kick-off and Community Fundraiser for Easter Seals Ontario, hosted by Waddell Apples, Sept. 11. The day-long family event, which featured apple picking, music, children’s activities and wagon rides, attracted large crowds. Since 2009, visitors to the farm, located at Hwy 15 and Washburn Road, have helped raise over $8,000 for local charities. Rob Mooy photo.
News – After several years on the drawing board, the final design for the rebuilt Central Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library at 130 Johnson Street is now approved. “We’re pleased we’ve come to an end in this part of the journey and we can now move forward with a really great library,” said Monica Stewart, chair of the Central Branch renovation committee. City councillors voted unanimously Sept. 6 to approve a heritage permit that formally allows the downtown library’s reconstruction at a cost of $13.8 million, despite a last minute attempt to alter the design. A heritage permit is required as the Central Branch is a designated property under the Ontario Heritage Act and because the branch is located in the Old Sydenham Heritage Conservation District. The library is also attached to historic Bishop’s House, constructed in the early 1800s, at Johnson and Bagot Streets. Among the key building changes approved: -improved meeting, community, exhibit and cultural space plus modern fixtures, better acoustics and more natural light, -children and teen areas will be separated and relocated to the main floor, -the main public entrance will be relocated further west on Johnson St. to the middle portion of the building, -adding a new large window while reconstructing three oriel windows on the second floor, while constructing a flat roof to reduce the safety risk of ice and snow falling, -replacing the banks of 27 small punched
out windows on the first and second floors, -replacing outdated mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems. Heritage consultant Carl Bray says architectural changes to the 38 year old building are meant improve public accessibility and safety and to make the library more energy efficient, while alterations to Bishop’s House will be “very minor.” “It’s an innovative approach to dealing with such as hybrid building,” he told council. “The whole design has actually changed quite a bit over the time that we’ve been working on it because we are in a heritage district, and we respect that. However, we also feel there needs to be a balance between today’s values and needs,” added Stewart. But Coun. Liz Schell, a member of the heritage committee, argues some of the alterations will change the look of the building for the sake of “convenience.” She introduced an amendment to prevent alterations to the 27 small punched out windows, adding it’s a unique fixture that needs to be preserved. Her message: “Keep one important part of the original design.” The amendment touched off a lengthy debate about whether councillors have the authority, or even the expertise, to alter the library’s new architectural designs. “This is not the place for us to become architectural experts and make recommendations on the fly,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson. 2 Kingston Heritage - Thursday, September 15, 2016
Mayor wants to carve the Hip’s name into Market Square News – Kingston is a city filled with memorials and tributes. And soon, it could add a Hip marker to the list. City councillors may bend their
own rules to commemorate The Tragically Hip’s historic Aug. 20 hometown concert. Mayor Bryan Paterson has introduced a motion, to be debated Sept. 20, to permanently recognize the final emotional show of the band’s
Man Machine Poem tour with a “stone engraved and a page added in the Kingston Remembers history flipbook within Springer Market Square.” Coun. Mary Rita Holland, who seconded the motion, says it’s important to mark the historic occasion while it’s still fresh in people’s minds. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime historical moment for everybody. People came to Kingston for this event and acknowledging that now is important.” The motion goes against a recently-adopted municipal commemoration strategy which states that an event will only be considered for commemoration at least 10 years after its conclusion. But councillors may make an ex-
ception, especially following the terminal cancer diagnosis of lead singer Gord Downie. Many observers believe the Aug. 20 concert was the band’s final performance. The Hip’s sold-out show at the Rogers K-Rock Centre attracted a further 25,000 people to Springer Market Square to watch the CBC’s live-stream of the concert on a large LED viewing screen. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared briefly in the square before attending the concert. An estimated 11.7 million people across Canada also followed the concert on television, radio and other social media platforms. The city declared Aug. 20 as The Tragically Hip Day to pay tribute to the iconic five-man band, which got its start in Kingston over three decades ago. The motion asks staff to work out details such as the wording and placement of the stone engraving. It’s believed the commemorative stone would be placed somewhere on the historic square behind City Hall. There is no cost estimate for the permanent stone engraving or adding a page to the flipbook, which is located on a podium in the square that recounts stories of Kingston. The mayor wants the cost to be funded through the existing recreation & lei-
sure services budget. It wouldn’t be the first time Kingston has honoured the band’s artistic and charitable contributions. Last spring, the band was given honourary degrees at Queen’s University and in 2012, council renamed one block in front of the downtown arena as The Tragically Hip Way. TICO#50007364

Robert Crothers, project manager, says replacing the small row of punched out windows is badly needed because the bricks around them are crumbling. He offered a candid opinion about Coun. Schell’s amendment. “Architects make those decisions rather than council.” He added: “Designers are hired to do the job, and take the liability and responsibility to do it.” Coun. Schell’s amendment
was defeated 8-4, and the final heritage permit application was then approved 12-0. With the architectural designs finalized, library staff will be busy packing up books and other materials this month as they get ready to relocate into temporary quarters. The Central Branch is slated to be completely closed to the public as of Nov. 28 to allow the nearly two-year long renovation. The $612,000 relocation plan involves opening a storefront branch for li-

In addition, the board will lease 14,000 square feet at 18 St. Remy Place off Dalton Avenue for book storage and administration office space. The downtown library currently welcomes 200,000 visitors who borrow about 300,000 items a year. The redesigned Central Branch is expected to reopen in the spring of 2018.

Capitol crunch time: Downtown condo hi-rise could face close vote at council By Bill Hutchins
News – There are indications that the fate of downtown Kingston’s newest hi-rise condominium could be decided by a razor thin vote. Councillors appear evenly divided on the rezoning application
by IN8 Developments to build its 15-storey Capitol condo on the site of the former movie theatre at 223 Princess Street. The building – a three floor above-ground parking podium topped with 12 storeys of residential units – would be located close to the Queen Street side of the
mittee voted 3-3 on a staff report that recommends approval of the rezoning. The matter now moves to council for a final decision on Sept. 20. The developer has cut six floors from the hi-rise project since it was first unveiled in the spring of 2015.

6 Kingston Heritage - Thursday, September 15, 2016
But Coun. Hutchison doesn’t think IN8 has gone far enough to address neighbourhood concerns. “I think a number of councillors and citizens are disappointed with the staff recommendation. Central issues haven’t been properly addressed in terms of maintaining historical, heritage values and architectural streetscape and, also, the whole issue of contextual precedence.” He says the proposed 15-storey condo is still far taller than what the site zoning allows. “We’ve got a proposal that’s twice that height of the current zoning. That might suit the developer but does it suit the public? I don’t think it does,” said Coun. Hutchison, who represents part of the downtown. However, Coun. Laura Turner supports the development as a way to encourage residential intensification in the downtown. “I think there’s a need for it. I’ve heard that 65 percent of the condo units have been sold to date. The builder has worked very hard with the public and with the community. He’s listened to their concerns.” The building’s architectural design has also changed. It now incorporates lighter building materials on the upper floors to soften its visual impact, she added. “The new design respects heritage. It’s dark on the bottom and light on top. It blends in more with the horizon.” City staff conclude the hi-rise won’t be out of place in the downtown and won’t significantly impact neighbourhood issues such as heritage, parking, shadowing and noise. They point out the developer has also agreed to a list of community benefits such as restoring the original movie theatre façade on Princess Street, inclusion of a public arts space, contributing money for a nearby public parking garage, and selling 25 percent of condo units below $264,000 to qualify as ‘affordable’ housing. Coun. Hutchison says the IN8 condo project takes densification to another level, one that could trigger more over-zoning hi-rise applications downtown. “We’re just piling density on density with negative implications.” The 52 metre tall Capitol condo includes 212 residential units – 64 one bedroom, 120 two bedroom and 28 three bedroom units – plus approximately 750 square metres of commercial floor space along Princess Street, and 106 on-site and 40 off-site parking spaces. Coun. Hutchison says IN8’s owner knew the property was zoned for eight floors
when he bought the land. “He made a proposal that didn’t have a whiff of respecting the (zoning) bylaw. The response he’s received can hardly be surprising.” The result could produce the most divisive development-related vote of this council term, and trigger a battle beyond City Hall. Said Coun. Hutchison: “I think it could it could end up at the OMB one way or the other.” The Ontario Municipal Board handles appeals on planning disputes in municipalities, and its rulings are usually final.

September sadness
September is a sad month for many; kids don’t want to go back to school, parents don’t want to go back to the daily grind and of course we are all sad that summer is coming to an end. But for me, September makes me sad for a different reason. Every year, September makes me wish that I were going back to school. That’s right, I actually wish that I could go back to school shopping, I wish I was returning to the classroom and learning new things, meeting new people and exploring new subjects. For as long as I can remember, going back to school has been a thrill for me. My parents still tease me about how I used to get so excited for back to school shopping and not just the clothing side of it. I used to love the new school supplies; the fresh pencils and
Letter to the editor
notebooks. I loved getting a new backpack and putting everything in it in preparation for the first day of school. I loved sitting my ‘first day of school’ outfit out in preparation for that exciting first morning. As I got older, I still had the same excitement for back to school and while sometimes that excitement was accompanied by nervousness, I still loved it. I enjoyed going to a new school when high school started and don’t even get me started on university. These days, most of my September nostalgia comes from those days in university that I wish I could go back to. As the saying goes ‘you don’t know what you’ve got til’ it’s gone’ and I certainly feel that way about my days at the University of Toronto. I remember first year and the amount of slacking I did. Like everyone else, I took full advantage of the freedom university gives students and I’ll admit that I didn’t go to as many classes as I should have. My grades inevitably suffered and it took me a long time to turn that around, but when I finally did, I wished that I could go back and start

all over again. When I realized how amazing the university experience is, how amazing the lectures can be and how insightful so many of the professors are, I just wanted to relive it all and soak it up for as long as possible. By the end of my undergraduate career I was ready to graduate and extremely happy to do so, but a part of me was sad to be leaving it all behind. I loved being on a campus that is full of excitement and energy. I loved being in a giant library filled with books and studying students and I loved learning something new each and every day. Living in Kingston you kind of get to relive some of that excitement by walking around Queen’s campus in September. While many of us complain about the students and their inability to cross the street properly or their incessant partying, they still bring an energy to the city that is unlike anything else. That energy makes me excited for them and a bit nostalgic for myself, but who knows, one day I may be going ‘back to school’ and if I do I will be sure to savor every moment.
met, interacted, and influenced the foundation of this nation. There is too much knowledge, and too much yet to be discovered and recorded for the experts above not to be sought for advice. They are the custodians of our collective national memory and they have not finished their job because it is ongoing. Let’s look at the history of heritage as I have understood it to have occurred, politically, at City Hall in the last couple of years, here in “Historic” Kingston via planning: 1) the dissolving the Heritage Board and 2) devolving heritage responsibility to a less powerful committee, 3) dismissing experienced heritage conservationists telling them that their expertise and experience were no longer needed and 4) then appointing individuals who were less well versed (than those former Guardians of Kingston on the Heritage Board) in the ever evolving processes of City Hall, and 5) who are now also to be removed from having any further input. These changes do not provide for a more efficient process, but for a much less thorough scrutiny of anything pertaining to heritage in Kingston. A cynic might even say that such a sequence of activity looks like planned obsolescence.
I am writing to reiterate what promises to be an error of judgment by the city: that proposed alterations in Heritage District Conservation Plans (like that of Barriefield) will no longer be required to be vetted by the Heritage Committee. It is a mistake. This imposition by the city, the disallowing of oversight by the Heritage Committee which provides a check for balance in submitted proposals in Kingston, implies that the educational background, practical experience, and project expertise of the staff comprises, and is comparable to, an association of heritage professionals like historians, architects, botanists, geologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, and local government heritage advisors, all practised in sharing assessments of significance. Surely no one at City Hall would pretend that to be the case. There are twenty-two (22) National Historic Sites of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, alone....and obviously the city is a treasure trove of many more were the possibilities to be explored. In Our Opinion
Planning for emergencies is always important For many, September means a return to normal routines. Kids go back to school and most adults finish up their vacations. This return to routine is also a good time to think about establishing new routines and more importantly, thinking about how prepared we all are for emergencies. This fall, The City of Kingston’s office of emergency management is encouraging families to use the back-toschool transition as a time to develop their emergency plan. “Planning together for emergencies helps your family feel prepared. Make sure everyone knows what should happen in the event of an emergency,” says Scott Davis, community emergency management coordinator in a release from the City of Kingston. When developing your emergency plan the city offers these tips: - Choose two emergency contacts - These are they people you contact to help reunite you with your family in the event of an emergency. Choose a local contact and an out-of-town contact. - Choose an emergency meeting place - This is a child-friendly place, like a grocery store, where you will meet in an emergency. If your child is with a caregiver, he or she should remain with the caregiver during an emergency. - Meet your community support network - Make sure your child is introduced to adults in roles who can be trusted to help them in an emergency, including police officers, nurses, doctors, teachers and firefighters. - Prepare for risks facing Kingston - Review and understand the possible emergencies that could affect Kingston. These include: utility disruptions, extreme weather, fire, hazardous spills and health emergencies. Having an emergency plan is also important as weather transitions and we move into the colder months. For more about preparing for emergencies, go to www.CityofKingston.ca/GetReady to find resources to help you plan.

Rad Kids Farm Camp has another successful year
Aric McBay Out Standing in our Field
This summer our farm hosted our second annual kids’ camp, run by Marie Bencze of Rad Kids. For three weeks this summer we had twelve kids running around the farm learning how to take care of chickens and feed cows, how make yogurt and compost, and where to find different plants and wildlife. The kids, mostly aged 5-11, had a blast. Camp coordinator Marie Bencze organized a full slate of farm and nature activities each day, teaching the kids both farm skills and respect for the land and each other. It was fascinating to see how kids
try to understand and internalize the rules of new situations. They were especially interested in how to interact with different animals, such as the cows. Every day the kids would see the dairy cows being moved around by our border collie, Meg. Meg was an endless source of excitement for the kids, who showered her with attention—sometimes to the detriment of Meg’s herding duties. The kids wanted to learn all of Meg’s different herding commands. And they wanted to act them out. One group of kids made up their own herding game, in which one child would play the dog, and the others would play a herd of cows. Then they herd each other from activity to
activity. They also came to understand and respect different parts of farm work, including the work done by our dog Meg. After we asked them—I think a couple of times—not to distract Meg by calling her while she was herding, the kids devised and acted out an elaborate skit. In the skit, a “herding dog” (played by a kid, of course) was distracted from its work by a group of yelling children. As a result, in this morality play, one of the “cows” (a kid) was eaten by a “coyote” (another kid). The chickens, however, were probably the fa-
vourite animals to visit. Chickens are perfectly sized livestock for children; small enough to pick up, and big enough to be interesting. Feeding chickens was the most poultry popular activity, especially once the kids realized the chickens would eat over-ripe cucumbers out of their hands. Collecting eggs was a close second. The success of the camp was due to the energy and diverse skill sets of those involved. Our photographer-in-residence, Andree Thorpe, documented events and lent each of the kids a tiny digital camera to use
themselves. Each of the farmers here dedicated some of their time to different activities—from dairy farming to soil science—and many volunteers and guest presenters joined us as well. Rad Kids showed me how children can have a very fun and educational time on a farm, and we’ll look forward to hosting them again next year. You can learn more about the camp at radkidsblog.wordpress.com. Aric McBay is a farmer and author based on Howe Island.

Hopefully, not. Kingston, the city with roots stretching back to 1673, “where history and innovation thrive” would not do that to the taxpayers who pay them to serve these two partners and this covenant.... Our City would recognize that the support of the Community is needed. That support is best rendered by citizen volunteers who are fully cognizant of Kingston’s Heritage. Heritage conservation generates construction
jobs, excites tourist interest, reinforces community identity and encourages intellectual and cultural growth...and prosperity. For the Old Kingston core, that is where history and innovation fearlessly meet within the discipline of thoughtful, conserving plans. Again, the ignominy of the near loss of the Broom Factory, the Phoebe, and the real, irreparable loss of the Marine Museum bear witness to the need for continued input by the Heritage Committee for any 19th century building or site. Again, Barriefield Village is a Heritage District, Kingston’s very own Upper Canada Village, and the

work of former city planner George Muirhead who collaborated with the internationally renowned Gordon Stephenson to protect such community assets. To ignore, distill, and subvert the safeguards set in place by this progressive, activist pair who were so far ahead of their time is to throw Kingston back into the regressive 1960s. For those who choose to look around with an open mind, and who are not afraid to look squarely at the truth, the heritage structures and ambiance of Kingston, especially the old core of it, are irreplaceable. Once something has been torn down on weakly supported advice or not, it can never be put back. Future lamentation about the error or mediocrity of “new” development does not provide for the erasure of the mistakes of planning and development. It shouldn’t need to be pointed out that George Muirhead, among others, laid the foundation for the ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT. Both he and Professor Stephenson were given awards of great merit for
their brilliant insights. Their work is studied world wide. It may seem darkly ironic to other communities watching what is going on here, and they are doing so, that Kingston is about to disavow the importance of its own history by curtailing the public input of the Heritage Committee, and ignoring privately paid consultants like respected heritage expert, Andre Scheinman. To undermine the standard of the Conservation District Plan for a place like Barriefield by ignoring the value and assessment of the Heritage Committee as a body of influence in heritage concerns in historic Kingston makes Barriefield, and places like it, vulnerable to ill fitting structures and it undermines another treasure of this town: the work of a living icon of Urban Planning – George Muirhead. Kingston ready to relax noise rules for sports, fireworks and trash pickup By Bill Hutchins
News – Kingston is proposing a series of relaxed noise restrictions for sports games, downtown garbage collection and holiday fireworks in a bid to strike an acceptable balance among neighbourhoods, companies and schools. The proposed changes reflect extensive public consultation in the city’s first major overhaul of the noise control bylaw in 12 years. The review comes after councils, past and present, have grappled with numerous requests for noise bylaw exemptions over the years. One of the most recent contentious issues centred on late night noise on the Queen’s University west campus sports fields. For the past three years, councillors have granted Queen’s a one year temporary noise exemption to allow whistles, amplified noise, anthems and PA announcements until 9 pm seven days a week at Richardson Stadium and the more heavily used artificial field near Johnson Street and Sir John A. Macdonald Blvd. Now, city officials appear ready to relax the rules permanently at all sports fields, meaning institutions such as Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College would not have to apply for yearly exemptions. “Staff deems it beneficial to establish a set of noise regulations specific to facilitating organized sporting activities while also managing the impacts this activity may have on residents,” according to a staff report. Under the proposed bylaw changes, sounds from sports whistles would be permitted from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. each day of the week in resi-
dential neighbourhoods and other areas during organized practices and games. In addition, PA announcements and anthems, plus crowd sounds of yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing, would be allowed from 7 a.m. (8 a.m. on Sundays) to 10:30 p.m. in residential areas, and from 7 a.m. (8 a.m. on Sundays) to 11 p.m. in all other areas of the city. “The proposed change would result in this type of noise being permitted, only by participants and spectators at organized sporting activities at sports fields, 90 minutes later in the evening in Residential Areas and one hour earlier on Sundays in both Residential Areas and Other Areas,” said the report. The recommendations, first presented to the administrative policies committee on Sept. 8, will eventually have to be approved by council. Evening and weekend construction activity has been another sore point for residents and councillors, who are often asked to bend the rules to accommodate builders facing winter weather and other construction delays. The recommended changes would give senior staff the authority to grant noise exemptions until 11 p.m. one day per week (excluding Sundays and Statutory Holidays) to permit the pouring, saw-cutting and finishing of concrete, and to permit the operation of construction equipment between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. one day per week (excluding weekends and Statutory Holidays). Any further noise exemptions would still have to be approved by council on a case-bycase basis. The revamped noise bylaw would also allow early morning start times for private garbage

The earlier pick up time will also be more consistent with City operations,” the report stated. The updated bylaw attempts to bring clarity to private fireworks displays that occur on statutory holidays. The city is proposing to allow the setting of fireworks between dusk and 11p.m. on both the day of and the day www.redgreen.com before Victoria Day and Canada Day, plus New Year’s Eve fireworks from dusk to 12:30 a.m. “Staff believes that the community ALGONQUIN COMMONS THEATRE - OTTAWA is generally more tolerant of noise 1-888-732-1682 or in person at the from fireworks set off on Victoria Day, Algonquin Commons Theatre Box Office. United Way announces campaign goal of over $3.4 million for 2016
By Tori Stafford tstafford@metroland.com
News – The United Way may be celebrating 75 years of history in the Kingston area, but it was with an eye to the future that this year’s campaign goal was announced on Friday, Sept. 9. The annual United Way KFL&A campaign kick-off breakfast saw hundreds of community leaders, local politicians, front-line workers and United Way supporters and volunteers come together as the local United Way announced their goal for the 2016 campaign. Up 1.5 per cent from last year’s goal, this year’s goal of $3,451,000 is “a really good and achievable goal,” said campaign chair Brigadier General Stephen Kelsey, addressing the crowd via video message, as he is currently deployed. “Sadly, I can’t be there with you. Fourth Annual Limestone City Car Classic Top: Brad Smith polishes up his 1956 Jaguar XK-140, during the fourth annual Limestone City Car Classic, at Lake Ontario Park, Sept. 3. Smith says, his wife always loved this style of car and when this one came available he bought it for her 40th birthday. It was nothing more than a rust bucket when he obtained the car, one that most considered not worth restoring. But, after 20 years of hard work, this beautiful piece of automotive history, lovingly named Gracie by his wife, has become a popular attraction at car shows all over the province. What’s in a name? Kingston Police honour local landmark with winning horse name By Mandy Marciniak mandymarciniak@metroland.com
News – After hundreds of submissions, the newest member of the Kingston Police’s Mounted Unit has a name; Murney was officially introduced on Sept. 7 in front of her namesake, Murney Tower. “The name really suits here because she is so tall,” explained Constable Deb Wicklam during the announcement. “She is like a tower so it fits.” Murney, formerly known as Q, is a seven-year-old Percheron/Thoroughbred cross originally from Wolfe Island. She stands at 17.2 hands high and has been trained by Wicklam over the past five years. While Murney has been part of the force since earlier this summer, she was still training and now, according to Wicklam, her name makes her official.
“This really makes her an official member of the unit,” she said. “She has fully completed her training and needed a more sophisticated name and not just a nickname.” The contest to name Murney attracted over 300 submissions and in the end, the decision was a bit more difficult than expected. “Our North American Police Equestrian Championships organizing committee narrowed it down and we brought some selections to the chief and deputy chief,” explained Constable Steve Koopman, media relations officer with the Kingston Police. “But from that there still wasn’t 100 per cent agreement and our own members voted by email on the final name.” In the end the vote was still very close, but Murney came through as the winning submission. Local Kingstonian, Brandy Bernard, became the winner of the naming contest, hav-
ing submitted her suggestion through Facebook back on May 28. She will receive two tickets to the North American Police Equestrian Championships (NAPEC) on Sept. 17 and 18 as well as two Kingston Police 175th anniversary commemorative coins and hopefully a meet and greet with the newly named horse. The residents of Rideaucrest Home also received some recognition for their submission ‘F.L.O.’, an acronym for Four-Legged-Officer, coming in as a close second choice. “We really felt that Murney reflected the city’s history,” said Koopman. “We are hoping Murney is a good fit with the mounted unit and as much as it was a difficult decision, we feel it is the right one for this horse.”

A Canadian tradition: Started by Terry, continued by everyone By Tori Stafford
tstafford@metroland.com
Events – For millions of Canadians, taking part in a Terry Fox Run is an annual tradition, and one that brings communities together for a common cause that touches so many – fighting cancer. This is precisely what came to mind when Kristi Murphy saw a retweet from The City of Kingston just over three weeks ago. That message was one from the Terry Fox Foundation pleading for someone to step up and organize this year’s run here in Kingston. “I thought ‘This needs to happen. This
needs to continue,’” said Murphy, who was born and raised in Kingston and also has some public event planning experience from her years living in Ottawa. “I have some background in organizing events along the same lines, and I have participated in the Terry Fox Run since 1986, so it wasn’t a far stretch for me,” said Murphy, who’s spent the last three weeks planning an event most organizations or cities spend months ironing out. “I think Terry Fox is one of the greatest Canadians… his story is very down to earth: He was a young kid that just wanted to make a difference.” Continued on page 20

Like many Canadians, Murphy’s life has also been touched by cancer numerous times, with her father, grandmother and four aunts and uncles having battled the disease. And with the opportunity to maintain a deserving tradition in her hometown, Murphy rose to occasion and is making it happen. The 36th annual Terry Fox Run here in Kingston will take place on Sunday, Sept. 18 – a date Kingston City Council recently voted to declare Terry Fox Run Day. The event is open to those wishing to run, walk, bike or rollerblade, and is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible, as well as dog friendly. Participants can register as individuals or in teams, with registration open right up to minutes before the run begins. Pre-registration is available online, as well as through the Terry Fox Foundation app, which is available
through the iTunes store, Murphy explained. There is no registration fee, nor a minimum donation/pledge rate. Those who pre-register can accept and track pledges online through the app. “What’s really remarkable is that, with the Terry Fox Foundation, 84 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research, which is on of the highest rates in all national charities in Canada, Murphy emphasized. “It’s wonderful. And Kingston itself is just shy of hitting the $1 million mark for funds raised through all of the Terry Fox Runs! The day’s events will take place at St. Lawrence College, and kick off at 8:15 a.m. when the registration desk will open. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by a warm-up at 8:50 a.m., and the run, commencing at 9 a.m. It’s all part of keeping Terry Fox’s legacy alive, and working towards

ďŹ nding the cure for cancer, Murphy expressed. “One of the things that Terry said was that when he was going through cancer treatment, he saw the pain and suffering of everybody else that was there. Everybody was going through the same thing and‌ he didn’t want to see that pain and suffering continue, he wanted to be part of the solution,â€? said Murphy. “It’s a few hours one day a year out of your life, and it makes a huge impact, and it’s important that the atmosphere of grassroots causes and communities coming together to help ďŹ nd a cure for this continues.â€? Making strides towards melanoma prevention, detection and support By Tori Stafford
tstafford@metroland.com
Events – It’s one of the most common types of cancer found in those aged 15 to 29; it claims approximately one life in North America every hour, and, chances are, you’ve known at least one person it’s affected. It’s melanoma – a serious form of skin cancer, and its leading cause is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. That’s why it’s important to raise awareness and education around detection and prevention of melanoma, and why Strides for Melanoma in support of the Melanoma Network of Canada (MNC) is coming to Kingston. Strides for Melanoma is a 5km fundraising walk that will take place in 16 communities across Canada. For the first time, the event is coming to Kingston, and, while raising funds for the MNC helps allow the organization to support individuals affected by the disease, the event is important for a number of reasons, explained local co-ordinator, Liz Watson. “I think one of the biggest things is raising awareness. We’re not focusing specifically on the number of walkers or the number of dollars raised, but it is about getting people out and getting people to understand more about melanoma – its prevention, its detection and the treatments and supports available to those it’s affected,” Watson said. The first annual Strides for Melanoma walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Rotary Park. Although the walk is intended to be for 5km, Watson underlined the fact that those who are unable to walk
5km are more than welcome to attend and join in because “every stride helps.” “The more people know about melanoma, the more easily it can be prevented and detected,” she said. “A lot of frontline research is done here in Kingston, but we want people to know there are a lot of patient support programs, too.” With roughly 6,800 people diagnosed with melanoma in Canada in 2015, the need for support and awareness is clear. Unlike other forms of skin cancer, melanoma is visible, and, when detected early, is often treatable. Despite this, the
rates of melanoma cases are still climbing in Canada, which is why the MNC’s pledge to educate about prevention and detection is so valuable. For Watson, taking on the role of coordinator for Strides for Melanoma was a choice that hit close to home, and why she felt it was so crucial to bring the event to Kingston. “I think we all see posts and stories every day about how cancer touches everybody,” Watson expressed. “For me, melanoma was something that I lost my grandmother to, whom I was very close with. She was a big volunteer here in
Kingston at the Kingston Cancer Clinic, and so this has become a sort of passion project for me. If we only get 50 people out to the event, we’ll be happy, because those will be 50 people who know more and can share what they know with others.” Strides for Melanoma will kick off at 9

Despite the fact that melanoma can be prevented and is more easily treatable when detected early, rates of the disease in Canadians continue to climb. Strides for Melanoma aims to raise funds for the Melanoma Network of Canada, as well as awareness about preventing and detecting the disease, which struck an estimated 6,800 Canadians last year alone.

Queen’s breaks Guinness World Record to kick off school year By Tori Stafford
tstafford@metroland.com
News – It took over 3,000 participants and likely close to 1,000 organizers and support staff, but Queen’s University now officially holds a Guinness World Record. As the sun beat down on Nixon Field Tuesday, Sept. 6, students, staff, and community members lined up in front of Kingston Hall and all the way down University Avenue to be part of the attempt to take the record for largest human letter. With the ‘Q’ already outlined, the largely student-based group were given gold Queen’s T-shirts as they walked onto Nixon Field, and took their places. The ‘Q’ quickly filled out, and with a total of 3, 373 people on the field, Queen’s became a Guinness World Record holder. The previous record, held by Dell Technologies, involved 2,166 people who created the ‘E’ Dell uses as a logo, and took place in Round Rock, Texas. The previous record was set only months early on June 22, 2016, and was “handsomely broken by Queen’s today,” according to Christina Conlon, adjudicator for Guinness World Records. “I was beyond impressed with the way everything was organized today. They were far ahead of schedule, they had everything better marked out, more detailed than we even ask for, which… I guarantee you, we do not put light requirements and restrictions,” Conlon said following the five minutes participants were required to hold the ‘Q’ for in order to break the record. “It is very hard to break these records, so to have broken it so soundly, and to have made it so easy for a mass-participation event like this, which are historically the most difficult and the most likely to be failures, it was so impressive.” Conlon, who adjudicates attempts to break world records throughout North and South America, has witnessed record-making in progress for a huge variety of things, including the recent record for largest fireworks display on New Year’s Eve in the Philippines, and even the largest toy pistol fight, which took place in Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, TX – an event she calls one of the weirdest she’s adjudicated. But Conlon’s praise for the organizers and participants at the largest human letter event at Queen’s was telling of how well she felt the event went. “Not just the organizers, but all of the participants were in a great mood, they were here on time, well behaved… I’ll tell you what, if I had a kid, I would
send them to this school! These are nice kids,” she Exactly 3, 373 people took to Nixon Field on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, in an attempt to break said with a laugh. the Guinness World Record for ‘largest human letter.’ Photo/Tori Stafford/Metroland “I go to a lot of these events and lots of times people ask me… for pointers on how they can do their attempt better, and these guys are my new examples,” she continued, gesturing around the field. “They have absolutely done this better than anyone else I’ve seen so far. Everyone here should be so proud of how everything went today.” Conlon presented Principal Daniel Woolf with the official certificate on behalf of Guinness World Records immediately following the ‘Q’ formation. For Woolf, it was a perfect way to welcome the university’s new students and kick off Frosh Week. “[This is] a fabulous way to start our 2016-2017 year,” he said before turning his attention to Conlon. “Queen’s University, you are officially amazing!” she responded.

Allowing Art COLUMNIST
@markaidanbergin A few years ago artist Peggy Fussell’s life seemed set. She lived in Baltimore, loved her job, loved her house and friends, her children were settled, and she figured she’d spend the rest of her life in Maryland. Life had other plans. Her husband landed an interview at Queen’s University. Fussell had no intention of moving and didn’t want her husband to even consider the position. Why mess with their perfect life? But he convinced her to join him on the trip to Kingston to just check things out. “I fell in love with Kingston and went from ‘there’s no way I’m moving’ to ‘I hope you get this job.’” Everything about the city and region appealed to her. “Coming into town felt nice, the size of it, the walkability, everything,” she said. “Then I saw Modern Fuel on Queen Street. I saw the lettering and loved the sign. Then when I found it was an artist-run centre, I felt at home in Kingston so quickly.” But their children were another story. One was entering her last year of high school and one was about to start high school. But even that worked out. The couple’s younger daughter was accepted into the Quinte Ballet School and spent her mornings at KCVI in Kingston and her afternoons at the prestigious ballet school in Belleville. “I was the ferry who got her there six days a week,” said Fussell. Now Fussell is one of the Tett8, the group of Creativty Studio artists at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. After moving to Kingston in 2013, she heard about the Tett Centre in the news. She’d become friends with fellow artist, sculptor Patricia Van Asperen. “We’d both participated in Your Own Grad School at Modern Fuel. We had a lot in common, especially in relation to how art can help with healing. We had a lot of really nice

I’m purposely working on paper that’s very fragile and can be ripped. I’m sewing on it. It’s going to be a quiltlooking piece. My grandmother was really into needlework and taught me.” Fussell explained that she will animate the piece in a minimal manner. Her grandparents are standing posing for the photos, but wind will be blowing, and things will be happening within the piece. Fussell does some painting and watercolors. “Another thing I like to do is paint miniature lamb cameos, as if they were miniatures from the 17th century.” Before coming to Kingston, Fussell worked for many years at Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. When I visited and saw all the studio light streaming in from her window, which overlooks the lake, I was sold.” They now share a studio in the Tett Centre. “My art is a bunch of different things,” said Fussell. “I used to try to tie them all together, but not so much anymore. I’m primarily an illustrator. I love taking content and making something visual to go with it.” Recently, she’s been illustrating the poems of Dale Tracey. Fussell said she also loves doing editorial work. But her favorite work is that which allows free flowing artistic expression. “I like to draw conversations,” said Fussell. “It’s hard to describe to people. I look at the flow of a conversation and draw what I think are the highlights. It helps me solidify the tension and feel of the room. I draw things using line and color.” Fussell also likes working with people. “I do a lot of collaborative workshops,” she said. “I have in the past worked on big interactive pieces that people contribute

She explained that young people today are under so much pressure that art is a place where they can learn to trust their own instincts and impressions. “Art develops strength of character. The arts in schools gives a sense of community, and if you have a sense of community, they are less likely to let big corporations do something nasty to their community.” She said that everyone should try creating art. “Find the medium and subject matter you like. Learn through drawing and art. It gives you a new perspective if you are studying something like history.” Fussell, along with Van Asperen, is currently running a needlepoint drop-in program at the Tett Centre. The program is called One Needle Social Stitching. Participants can bring whatever they are working on or they can start something new .

Frosh week antics go nuts for the community By Tori Stafford
tstafford@metroland.com
News – Somewhere between the 6,000 cans of nuts, the 100+ volunteers and the
400 brand new engineering students at Queen’s, it’s easy to get caught up in the energy and excitement of a 52-year-old tradition. That tradition is the Rotary Nut Drive,
Club of Kingston and Area, RKY Camp, Easter Seals, H’art Studio and Pathways to Education. This year, over $40,000 was raised during the one-night event where students solicit donations from area residents in exchange for a can of nuts. At the same time, the event helps to introduce the students to local community involvement, and allows residents from Amherstview to Joyceville meet the newest group of ‘purple people,’ as the engineering frosh students are known locally thanks to their gentian violet-dyed skin and outrageous gelatine- and porridge-gelled hairdos. “It’s a fundraiser, but it’s also good
for the community to see all the Queen’s students out there,” said Crosbie, noting that the Nut Drive allows Kingstonians to see the new students getting out and helping the community as opposed to in the negative light often cast over frosh week and other student events that have occurred in the past. “It’s nice to have an event like this where everybody just comes and pulls together to share the money, share the fun and share the adventure… and the Rotarians getting swept up with the enthusiasm of the students, and doing what Rotarians are supposed to do – think big picture.”

a fundraising partnership between the four area Rotary Clubs and the Queen’s University Engineering Society that dates back to 1965. As an orientation week event for the frosh students entering Queen’s engineering programs, 120 Rotarians came to campus on Thursday, Sept. 8, where they met the unsuspecting students to take them on a door-to-door nut-selling adventure. “The fun part is that these kids don’t know what they’re in for!” said Roger Crosbie, Nut Drive chair for the Rotary Club of Kingston. “From their point of view, it’s called ‘Go Nuts!’ and it’s just another one of the orientation events. So they show up here, and we kidnap them in the cars and say ‘Guess what! We’re taking you out to the routes and you’re going doorto-door to sell cans of nuts!” Together, the efforts of the students and the Rotarians raise funds to help the many organizations and causes the area Rotary Clubs support, such as Boys and Girls

Magic “Star Stuff ” coming to Kingston “It’s the grown up prequel to the Peter Pan story,” said Schaefer Scovil. “It follows the story of an orphan boy who, over the course of the play, becomes the boy who never grew up that we all know as Peter Pan, perhaps in a way we’ve never imagined.” The story is one of the few Broadway shows that I’ve ever seen three times. The first time I saw it, I knew little about it aside from the prequel premise. By the end, I knew I’d just experienced one of the most intelligent plays I’ve ever seen. “Peter and the Starcatcher takes place in a world in which there is this powerful Star Stuff,” said Schaefer Scovil. Think pixie dust. Celia Keenan-Bolger, who owned the role of Molly (the Starcatcher) on Broadway (and played the role of Peter Pan in the eponymous show while she was still in high school in Michigan), explained Star Stuff: “In the telling of this story, little bits of stars fall to earth and they are called Star Stuff,” said Keenan-Bolger. “Whoever touches Star Stuff becomes whatever they want to be. So if

“Nothing is forever. That’s the rule. Everything ends. And so our story begins.” So opens of one of the most brilliant, inventive and funny plays to hit Broadway in the past several decades, and the show is coming to Kingston. Peter and the Starcatcher is set to open at the Baby Grand Theatre on January 17, 2017. In the few days since last week’s column featuring Madeleine (Maddy) Schaefer Scovil, Blue Canoe Productions announced that Schaefer Scovil will direct the award-winning Peter and the Starcatcher. The show promises to take the audience to Neverland and far beyond. Peter and the Starcatcher is a magical adventure about endings, beginnings and never-endings. It’s about growing up and saying goodbye and it’s about staying young forever.
you are really evil and hungry for world domination then you get that. And if you want to stay a boy forever then you get that. A Starcatcher’s job is to make sure that Star Stuff doesn’t get into the hands of the wrong people.” “Boy gets involved and has to protect Star Stuff from Black Stache, who will go on to become Hook,” said Schaefer Scovil. “Boy meets Molly, a Hermioneesque girl.” Molly is precocious and feisty, which is a good thing because her adventures take her and her father’s ship, The Neverland, through lands of mermaids, pirates, and jungles. Throw in a massive storm along the way and this girl needs some serious mettle to survive. At some future time beyond the play she’ll also give birth to the beloved Wendy. The script will have you roaring with laughter at one moment and later you’ll be deeply moved and touched by the depth of emotion in the show. The final time I saw this show, I was with my daughters, Emily and Maureen. At the end, I’m pretty sure we were all dabbing the tears in our eyes Broadway hit Peter and the Starcatcher is coming to a Kingston stage. as Molly says goodbye to Boy. Continued on page 31
Blue Canoe Productions will produce the show, opening on January 17, 2017 for a three-week run.

Magic “Star Stuff” coming to Kingston Continued from page 30
“It has to hurt,” Molly tells Boy. “That’s how you know it mattered.” You’ll often see the phrase, “Good for all ages” applied to a movie or play. What that usually means is children will love it and adults probably won’t be too bored. There’s no boredom for adults watching Peter and the Starcatcher. Children will love the imaginativeness and playfulness of the show. Adults will watch in wonder and be enthralled by the depth, the symbolism and the humor winding its way through the play. “What’s wonderful about this show is its appeal to children and adults alike,” said Schaefer Scovil. “A lot of the jokes are for older audiences, but there’s so much to love from a young perspective. What I like even more about appealing to a younger audience is that there’s so much to love from a younger perspective. They’ll see it and think it’s something they could do themselves. If you want kids to become involved in theatre, they’ll see Peter and the Starcatcher and think, ‘Hey, I cold be involved in something like this.’”
She said she hopes to replicate some of the staging from the original show. “To be honest, I plan on stealing quite a few ideas from the original production,” said Schaefer Scovil. “I want to make good use of the space of the Baby Grand. It’s interesting with the balcony and stairs and little alcoves. I’m looking forward to a really creative process with the cast. A lot of it is going to be about the actors. It will be up to them to transport the audience. It’s going to be about good storytelling.” Schaefer Scovil isn’t sure what the makeup of the cast and creative team will look like as auditions are just in process. She knows she’ll be working with music director Ryan Cowl, who also worked with Schaefer Scovil in both Chicago and The House of Martin Guerre. The rest of the cast and crew will be selected over the next month. Three key roles to fill will be Molly, Boy/Peter and Black Stache. Beyond that, Schaefer Scovil has to select 12 top-notch actors who will play multiple roles, with their primary responsibilities being as pirates or
orphans. Each role in the play is crucial, so you end up with what feels like an ensemble of lead actors. Christian Borle played Stache on Broadway. That’s no easy role to fill. The actor selected in Kingston will have a huge responsibility of winning the audience with his cunning but ever so charmingly dastardly ways. The Boy (Peter) role will require an actor with diverse skills. “[Boy is] such a great part for any actor,” said Schaefer Scovil. “The amount of transformation he goes through, it will be a great learning experience for a lucky performer here in Kingston. As for Molly, this role will require an actor with the stage experience and skill to fill the theatre with both innocence and an awe-inspiring sense of adventure. On Broadway, Celia Keenan-Bolger captivated audiences as Molly. No one can ever top Keenan-Bolger, who in her thirties successfully won (and broke and healed) hearts as 13-year-old Molly. Schaefer Scovil hopes to find someone who can match KeenanBolger’s beloved Molly.
“In a good way, Molly doesn’t have the hangups of being a girl,” said Keenan-Bolger. “She’s super bright and a bit bossy. But with the orphans, one of whom becomes Peter Pan, she really takes care of them. In this Peter Pan telling the woman is strong. Molly is such a good role model for young girls.” She also explained that, in addition to being a lot of fun, Peter and the Starcatcher was one of the most rigorous and physically demanding shows she had ever done. “It’s one of those shows, once it starts, you’re on the ride. It feels fast.” If one can speak of blockbuster in relation to the quirky Baby Grand stage, this is going to be one and has the potential to surpass even the success of Blue Canoe’s Chicago, the summer hit of the Kingston stage.
Word spread fast, and many people were disappointed in the summer when they discovered that Chicago was sold out throughout its run. Don’t let that happen to you with Peter and the Starcatcher. Get your tickets as soon as they go on sale or you’ll be missing out on pure magic. I plan on getting tickets for more than one show. Peter and the Starcatcher opens at the Baby Grand Theatre for a threeweek run on January 11, 2017. I’ll take a closer look at the Kingston production after the cast and creative team is selected and in full rehearsal, closer to the opening date. Factors that might hurt a home’s value
Nowadays, homeowners looking to sell their homes know it’s not as easy to do so as it might have been a few years ago. A struggling economy has made it difficult for many homeowners to sell their homes for a price they’re comfortable with. But the sagging economy is not the only thing can make it difficult to sell a home. In fact, a host of other things, some obvious but some not so obvious, can hurt a home’s value as well. • Location: A home’s location is arguably its best or worst selling point. A home in a great location won’t be as difficult to sell as a home in a bad neighborhood. But location goes beyond a neighborhood’s reputation, especially in recent years. Homeowners who live in a neighborhood or development with many foreclosures might find those foreclosed properties are hurting their own home’s value. Lots of foreclosures could negatively affect a neighborhood’s reputation, which might make a home within that neighborhood less attractive to prospective buyers. • Appearance: A home’s appearance is another obvious variable that might affect its resale value. Homeowners might want their home to reflect their own individuality, but that’s not going to help when the time comes to sell the home. If the exterior paint is out of the ordinary, then it might be wise to choose a more traditional or conservative color before erecting the “For Sale” sign out front. The same goes for a home’s interior. If the interior design is especially unique, a more traditional interior decor might help the home sell faster. • Size and style: Another thing to consider when selling a home is its size and style. A home that stands out on the block might be an attention-grabber, but that’s not always
attractive to prospective buyers. For instance, a colonial sitting in the middle of a street filled with contemporary homes will stand out, but likely for all the wrong reasons. It will likely appear dated and out of place, which is something buyers might not want. In addition, if the home is considerably larger or smaller than the surrounding homes, then this could hurt its value. • Non-conformity: In many ways, conformity is not considered an admirable trait. But when selling a home, conformity could make the difference between a home selling quickly or remaining on the market for months if not years. When shopping for a home, buyers often shop in certain neighborhoods and towns and might see many different homes within a given ZIP code. Homeowners with homes that don’t conform to others in the area might find it difficult to sell their homes. For instance, homeowners trying to sell a two bedroom home in a neighborhood filled with three bedroom homes might notice their home’s value is not as high as that of surrounding homes, regardless of the neighborhood or how similar the home’s exterior is to surrounding homes. • Age: Older homes might have character and a sense of nostalgia, but appraisers take age into consideration when determining a home’s value. And buyers tend to lean toward newer homes for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the feeling that newer homes have far more modern amenities than older homes. When it comes to a home’s value, there are a host of things that could ultimately increase or decrease that value in the eyes of prospective buyers.

3. Prepare and practice a ďŹ re escape plan. Draw a oor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room — especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. 4. Select building materials that provide passive ďŹ re protection. Passive ďŹ re protection is part of the core of the building and helps control ďŹ re by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive ďŹ re protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally ďŹ re-resistant, inorganic materials. A favorite among builders, contractors and homeowners is a stone wool insulation called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound, which offers ďŹ re resistance up to 2,150°F. Its melting point is higher than the temperature of a typical house ďŹ re, which means it will stay in place longer to provide passive ďŹ re protection when every second counts, allowing more time for safe evacuation and for ďŹ rst responders to arrive.

(MS) — Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house ďŹ res, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a ďŹ re? In reality, smoke and ďŹ re spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a ďŹ re occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most –– your home and family. 1. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. 2. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior.
