Helping to make art accessible
S
tandard Bank’s association with the Cape Town Fringe has been firm since it’s inception in 2014. Our support of the Cape Town Fringe is an extension of our involvement in the National Arts Festival and our long-standing commitment to the arts in South Africa. Our arts sponsorship portfolio includes the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Grahamstown, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz which has been running for 20 years, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards running for over 3 decades, and the Standard Bank Art Gallery in Johannesburg. The Cape Town Fringe, although still young in years, has certainly made its mark on the Mother City’s cultural landscape and has succeeded in attracting younger audiences, while also giving new and emerging talent a platform to showcase their work and for audiences, new and old, to be entertained and inspired. We are extremely excited that the Cape Town Fringe this year will be extending its reach and impact even further by taking performances into the communities of Cape Town with performances to be hosted in Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Delft, as well as Woodstock and in the CBD. We look forward to another stimulating Cape Town Fringe Festival and extend our gratitude to Tony Lankester and his team for all their hard work and dedication in bringing the arts to the people. Our biggest thanks, though, is to the audiences who continue to support and grow the creative arts in our country and to the artists who continue to inspire and move us forward as a society.

Mirroring the complexity of the Mother City
C
ape Town is a complex space and for me any festival which is a true reflection of the Mother City needs to reflect that complexity. And, given that Fringe Festivals are such complex endeavours, intuitively it then seemed that this year’s decentralised model of a performance circuit situated where people live and work could perhaps be a better mirror for more accurately reflecting both the sprawling geography and complicated history of this place than the Cape Town Fringe has perhaps done to date ... But what do I even mean by that? And what exactly is this ubiquitous Fringe model which I imagine that I am referring to? Is it about the ticket price, the content on the programme, and /or the location of the participating venues? Or is the Fringe just a home for the terminally reactionary? Could it be all of those things and none of them all at the same time? Well, I reckon it’s exactly those contradictions that map out who we are – here and now – not only in Cape Town, but also as a nation navigating the slings and arrows of outrageous life in this country ... For me, the idea and model of a Fringe needs to be about the artists. It must be about the work. It has to be about placing the festival-goer at the heart of the Festival experience. These biggerpicture-things that are about building something for the future. Something that brazenly flashes a zap sign at convention,
at the fourth wall and at making art the way we were in the way were – in favour of imagining new ways that we could be – and could be making art – in spite of all of that undeniably complicated history which we have had to navigate as people divided, here at the southernmost tip of the continent ... For me this 2017 Fringe says “forget you” to all of that and defiantly chooses to be all about tomorrow ... So how about a bold line-up of cutting-edge contemporary works by phenomenal female theatre makers from across the Peninsula that reflect the character, spirit and identity of the Mother City? How about the most amazing roll call
of male choreographers taking the lead in our most provocative and compelling dance programme to date? How about boys from across the country dancing and doing it well? How about a programme of local and international stand-up that consciously, wilfully and almost dangerously sets out to prove that comedy is the ultimate form of free speech? And how about all live art forms for all – irrespective of age, religion, political persuasion or sexual disposition? How about that? Well, okay then. Enjoy!
Ashraf Johaardien EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
O
n behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to welcome the Fringe Festival back to the Mother City for another exciting line up of performances. In its fourth year now, we have all grown accustomed to the high standard of our home-grown talent who are able to hold their own alongside their international counterparts. We are amazed at how the festival has grown and developed in a short space of time. It is quite a niche event that gives up and coming performers the platform to showcase their talent in the arts. Importantly, in a truly inclusive manner, it takes the theatre to the people by hosting performances at venues around the metro making the event accessible to even more communities. Performances will be held in the CBD, Nyanga, Retreat, Delft and Khayelitsha instead of using City Hall as a base. We must commend the organisers for this new and innovative format for the 2017 Fringe Festival. The use of diverse venues enables residents to make their way to other parts of the city to meet and interact with their neighbours as such, which helps to bridge the cultural divide. It affords visitors the opportunity to experience Cape Town culture and hospitality in some non-conventional venues and neighbourhoods. The City of Cape Town has been a proud supporter of the fringe since its inception as such events help to bring people together from all walks of life and from across our diverse city. We would like to wish all the artists the best of luck for their upcoming performances. May this be the big break you have been waiting for. To budding artists, we trust that the festival will inspire and empower you to make a difference in your communities and make positive contributions to improving society. We call upon Capetonians and visitors to come out in their numbers in support of our local artists and enjoy what the Fringe Festival has to offer. We wish the organisers the best of luck for another successful event. Thank you for choosing Cape Town as a host city once again.

Terence Makapan
Unmute Dance Company
Through the allegory of air and breath (w)asem speaks about the anxieties that come with being a queer individual in an oppressive system, being a person of colour in a white community and, lastly, the metatheatricality of being a person with deep personal anxieties who has to be an actor in front of an audience. The play is full of dark humor, addressing social injustices and highlighting the importance of expressing yourself no matter how impossible it may feel. This, mainly Afrikaans, production mixes white Afrikaner culture with coloured Afrikaner culture.

Acoustiq Assassins are “storytelling musicians” whose acoustic yet alternative sound could best be described as contemporary soul/indie R&B. The Acoustiq Assassins XPERIENCE is an evening of stories expressed through music and spoken word. In the ceremonial use of storytelling, the
message becomes more important than the time, place and characters of the message. The tale is one inspired by love that moulds, builds and celebrates. Love that shares, cares and adorns. Love that elevates and inspires entire communities. Featuring: Siphesihle “Tonick” Bhengu, Gugu “GU” Mdladla, Siphiwe Junior Mazibuko, Pertunia Msani, Liyasakha Tyhoba, & Mazwi Khumalo

This piece draws on the ‘unheard’ stories of people living in the townships in poverty (mother daughter love, struggles with drugs, living in two worlds – work and home). It was choreographed drawing from the experiences of the choreographer and the dancers – experiences where they felt “unheard and unseen”. Abangabonwa received a Standard Bank Ovation Merit Award at the 2016 National Arts Festival and was well received by those in the arts industry. “... an extraordinary work of art, a sincere physical dance storytelling of note...I was deeply moved and taken on a journey of past, present and future.” – Mandla Mbothwe.

The Alchemy of Words
Rhodes University Theatre
Theatre Arthur Rimbaud, the ‘enfant terrible’ of French poetry published his first immortal poem at the age of 16 only to completely abandon writing poetry at the age of 21. In The Alchemy of Words, three artists from different disciplines – puppetry, film and music – search to capture the enigma of Arthur Rimbaud and what it
means to be a pioneer. Expect an immersive experience that combines artistic projections, puppetry and live music inspired by the diverse imagery from Rimbaud’s poems – smoke filled battlefields, the lush countryside of the French Ardennes, colourful vowels, crimson seas... This poetry and music piece will heal many souls as it uses words that speak truth about our reality. We speak words that convey motivation for people whose rest in peace is disturbed by the pain in their hearts; music that heals when heard. We perform mostly in our own language to help people get back to their own music. It will be for your own good to come and watch our A cappella music and poetry performance, which combines beautiful voices and satisfying words. Come and feel healed! Wathinta Abafazi Wathinti Mbokodo!
Boy Ntulikazi, won the 2017 Best of Zabalaza Festival. This poignant and physical one-hander, with the accompaniment the a guitarist live on stage, delves into the challenges that determine the way individuals reflect on the world around them, while engaging directly with audiences. It is a “powerful drama” that examines the far-reaching implications of decisions taken by individuals and the possible devastating impact those decisions can have on future generations.

Broken: Revisited is a story about three girls that are broken in different ways that somehow seem the same. Two girls leave their home in the rural areas to chase their dreams in the city of lights, Johannesburg. When they get there, they get involved in bad things and end up being so swallowed by Jo’burg that they forget the reason they left their homes in the first place. Broken is a story of broken dreams. Lost dreams. Forgotten dreams. It is a story of betrayal. Vengeance. Hatred. Anger. Abuse. Lost souls. It’s also a true story.

Comedy A crime has been committed in fairytale land. The frog is dead and now the princess is a widow. The details are vague and the murderer is obviously a mastermind. It will take Fairy Tale Land’s top detectives to solve the case. With impossible clues leading to confused witnesses and a high-speed car chase, these two deadbeat cops, with their offbeat jokes, will have you laughing your way to the truth. This is Cairns and Cockrell’s second show after their debut show, The Plothole received critical acclaim: “An hour of hearty laughter that will keep you and your tannie laughing out loud” – Cue.co.za
Theatre4change
Uqhawukil’ujingi explores the broken connection between the Nguni people, it explores the effects of the African Diaspora and the displacement of an ancestry which longs to return to its rightful land of birth and heritage. Like dust to dust, what was once African must return to Africa. Uqhawukil’ujingi follows the story of a young girl, Nozipho, who is visited by her long lost ancestry, those who were taken away in the slave trades. The dead are not at rest.

Dirty Laundry En Vuil Wasgoed is a story that is motivated at telling the #Other_Coloured_Story. It is a story that moves away from the typical stereotypical coloured stories that in most cases offend many. This is a comedy/drama that tells the story of a young man trying to find out who his biological parents are and why they gave him up for adoption when he was just a baby. The story will take its audience on an emotional, stressful and confusing ride – making them wonder what the real story behind the story is.

In physical and lyrical vignettes and disconnected monologues, The Funeral is a meditation on our own fraught connection with life and death. Scotch finds his spirit caught up in a space of limbo, where he is yet to find the presence of God or the burning of the eternal flames of Hell. Maybe the injustice that keeps him from crossing over is that he was not buried in his favourite jacket, or is it the notion that has always stayed in his mind: that all the existing dogmas and religions were just attempts to find a way to carry on.
Featuring: Ernestine Deane - lead vocals, Nobuhle Mazinyane - keys, Terryl Bell - drums, Tiana Marwanqana - bass, Carly Nauta - violin

Ernestine is an urban African voice sharing ancient African stories. Well known as the vocalist of iconic SA hip hop band Moodphase5ive and respected as a solo artist in music, film and theatre performance, she has a career spanning more than two decades. She is inspired by the stories of South Africa, particularly the Cape and her music brings a message of love, healing and celebration of the African continent, weaving together a mid-tempo tapestry of jazz, reggae, goema, funk and soul to support Ernestine’s distinctive vocals.

ISMISM
Dance, Visual & Physical Theatre
Comedy
IKhaya (Home) explores the meaning of home and the pivotal role of women in the home and in the world. “Ikhaya was the place where I was born. It symbolised a place of safety where I was surrounded by a sense of love”, explains choreographer, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, until her mother died and she was shocked into realising her home had lost its heart. Turning loss into art, Ndaba explores the central role of women as the anchor and the story of children growing themselves, brought up without a sense of home. Relationships are arbitrary and short lived, constantly changing and directionless. The Indoni Academy has become a home for young people seeking a place of belonging, of safety, of family.

Kiri Pink Nob presents J.bobs Live – Off The Record – A Game Show. Here, the overt flamboyance of the township, meets the subdued vileness of suburbia, and the blend is as beautiful as it is intriguing. A romantic mingle of palates that makes for quite the evening of riotous entertainment.

19 The Kaffirs
LamentationS
Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation
Rooftop Promotions THEATRE
The play explores and challenges the cowardly and dastardly acts of our liberators with perceived bravery as a currency. Chronicling being bedded by nine men and carrying out some arduous chores as payback for some murder ostensibly carried out by a long lost brother, Lamentations, through our girl child Stella, throws this long drawn out, traditional yet highly challenged practice, within the realm of the 21st century and makes us question its place and relevance in a new world. The cast and crew and this refreshing, challenging piece of work from a first time writer is eclectic in its composition.
The Kaffirs is a story that explores the daily social issues that many South African families go through. It is told through the Willemse family, that is poverty stricken and has influences of alcoholism, domestic violence, homosexuality and prostitution. The text is delivered in satirical way that evokes uncomfortable laughter. Winner of a 2017 Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival.

THE LITTLE THEATRE OCT SEPT
Kasi Stories asks pertinent questions about the failure of the father figure in the South African context. A masterful, thoughtful theatrical experience.
The Vukallective brought you Era and AVU (Fresh Fringe Nominee 2016) last year at the Cape Town Fringe. This year’s production blurs the boundaries between dance, theatre and performance. A multidisciplinary production that won the award for Best Upcoming Young Artist at the 2015 Vrystaat Arts Festival. The production is a rollicking, absurdist, word-fest by Carl Laszlo written in 1956. In this adaptation the dialogue is coupled with post-modern dance and a fresh interpretation of the text creates a story that contemporary South African audiences can relate to.

A celebration of Xhosa children’s literature and indigenous music with Sindiwe “Nomabali” Magona, Bongani Sotshononda and the United Nations of Africa band. A compilation of traditional Xhosa stories for primary school learners aged 6-13 with +- 200 children per performance. Penned and performed by legendary storyteller Sindiwe Magona. Mama Magona will play various characters, using traditional masks and props and traditional instruments will be used to provide live soundtrack and sound effects.
Lukhanyo goes against his mother’s wishes and opens an old sack he finds while playing with friends behind the houses. Luks’ life is taken over by an evil spirit that causes him to do bad things and be a bad influence on other children and the last straw is when he mugs his best friend, Asanda. Asanda then finds a way of helping her friend by bringing those who love Luks closer to him. Through Asanda’s courage the evil is defeated by the dance of love.

20 Mashudu The Red Card
Ndendile
My Home Theatre Company Theatre
Rainbow Arts Organisation
Ndendile is that rare South African piece of theatre that bridges urban and rural traditions and, in so doing reflects the fact that, regardless of our origins, whom we fall in love with is a matter of a heart not head. The sensitive and poignant love story happens to be between two men. Their return to Thabani’s traditional village in search of approval exposes the personal prejudices of many in the village and tests a father’s love for his son. Winner of numerous awards, including Best Production at the Youth on Top Heritage Festival in 2014.
Comedy Mashudu began his career as an actor, clown, stuntman, dancer, acrobatic and comedian in 2008. He spent time in Canada as part of a circus production called Amakhosi The Kings of Africa, directed by Bheki Ndlovu, and toured with Clowns without Borders. Red Card is 50% political jokes but also focuses on topics like travelling, road rules, Omashonisa, growing up in Director & performer: Mashudu Ramashotha Venda, taxi drivers and race. Tossie van Tonder is a 62-year old South African dance veteran. Powers of Lightness is her response to South Africa, her love, defence and all emotions rising for her country. She brings her whole self to every performance, each a unique event driven by her fierce intellectual and emotional questing. The body in space and time is the unpredictable meeting place of personal and collective energies, while movement and silence are their language.Van Tonder’s dance technique builds down institutionalised dance forms to embolden her affect and its unique beauty. Her concern and celebration of South Africa is a visceral experience for spectators, who have described Powers of Lightness as “a shamanic ritual of release of dark forces, a fearless treading between life and death and a profound catharsis that is a feat of beauty.” Choreographer & performer: Tossie van Tonder aka Nobonke

The Playroom is the first theatre production from the Western Cape to ever win the Zwakala Festival at the Market Theatre. The Citizen: “Space is an integral part in The Playroom as the different characters deal with their various ordeals and traumas in one space. The haphazard nature of the mentally ill characterises this playroom, from beginning to end, and the term this is a ‘mad house’ is appropriate when describing the space before the audience at the Market Theatre. But as the story unfolds and the initial fascination with the humour associated with mental illness subsides, the characters’ personal stories begin to reveal themselves.”

Following on from the success of his previous show Gluten Free at the National Arts Festival. Schoolboy is a stand-up comedy show performed by Nkosinathi Maki. Maki takes us on a hilarious journey through his childhood experiences as a school boy. He talks about various issues like: human trafficking, dodging school and how call centre agents and insurance companies are robbing us. The show is family friendly but due to the heavy subject, we recommend PG 13. It is brilliant show that cannot be missed.

The Singing Chameleon Ditshimega Domain Family (Family Fare)
!Ginkhoe Folkores
The Singing Chameleon is an award winning children’s theatre production that tells the magical tale of Chameleon who rises above adversity to become a hero. After being mocked by other animals at the river, Chameleon looks for a place to hide because he can’t endure the cruel words coming his way. Isolated from others he will just sit in his hiding place waiting to pounce on flies and insects. However his fortunes change when he meets Lark and the old man, Ntate Paulosi.
Theatre (Drama) Sleeping with the Enemy unpacks and unravels the complicated relationship between those who desire to transform the townships and those who cannot endure the realities of informal settlements. Two black attorneys, a married couple, battle over a sexually violated and murdered child. The wife wants to leave the “concentration camps” called townships, but the husband refuses out of a commitment to his people’s economic transformation. His parents were brutally murdered by an apartheid government; now, he is against the idea of sharing spaces with white communities. Without disregarding his feelings, she overtly confronts the husband to adjust his political belief for the sake of their security.

Split is a solo performance born from whispers and flickers of early childhood experiences that have woven themselves through the performer’s life. The work is an investigation into memory, sexuality, personal identity and gender. Beginning as slow as the eye can see, the work engages in a process of physically inverting, destabilising and deforming the female body. This is in response to the tumultuous and often contradictory feelings that reside and build in the performer as she navigates being this woman in this society. Ultimately, this work is an edifying act of externalising that which is wild and expansive in all of us. With thanks to the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative

Thirst, can be seen as a metaphor for life, a simple but effective plot by Nobel prize winning playwright, Eugene O’Neil. The story is set a century ago and depicts three desperate characters stranded on a raft with great focus on survival and the apparent lack of water. Something all Capetownians can relate to! We celebrate the up and coming 130th Birthday of Eugene O’Neill in 2018. Thirst is said to be his first play and was his response to the tragedy of the Titanic. Period drama, absurdist theatre.
