The courage to make art
fun, feistiness and freshness
ften large public-funded arts institutions will write about how their institutions contribute to the economic growth of the areas in which they operate. Independent artists, working outside of these institutions and often with smaller budgets, rarely try to justify their work in the same economic terms. In most cases, these artists value their work as “art for art’s sake” or against how it contributes to social and political regeneration – both are factors which ultimately impact on economic growth. Across the globe, artists who participate in fringe festivals do so because fringe festivals are a dynamic way for independent artists to stand up for themselves; and to let their work challenge the perception that artsy people working outside of the “main” institutions are a bunch of weenies. The inaugural Cape Town Fringe programme consists of themes ranging from the complex issues of identity to the right to protest. Presented twenty years into our new democracy, several of the artists on the programme continue to boldly engage with issues about white guilt, black protests, gender issues and other aspects of our socio-politic landscape. Through productions already tested on the National Arts Festival Fringe – some having won the sought after Standard Bank Ovation Award – and others that will premier in Cape Town, the diverse programme comprised of theatre, comedy, music and dance is a barometer of the vibrancy of South Africa’s independent theatre sector. Much strength to the artists in this inaugural Cape Town Fringe Festival who have the courage to make art because it is the primary reason for wanting to be an artist in an exciting and continually evolving city and country.
elcome to the inaugural Cape Town Fringe … a celebration of the fun, feistiness and freshness of South African performance art. The Fringe has been percolating for some time now – first in the minds of those of us working on the Grahamstown National Arts Festival then spreading slowly to capture the imaginations of our partners, the City of Cape Town, Standard Bank and 567 Cape Talk, all of whom colluded to make it happen (and thank you to them for having faith in our big idea). The notion of the Fringe then took hold in the imaginations of our artists who submitted some amazing proposals and now, finally, it has reached you… the reason we wanted to do this in the first place. To understand what the Cape Town Fringe is, it might be worth stressing what it is not. It is not a rehash of ’the best of Grahamstown’, although some of the best shows from last July are here. It is not staid, stiff or stuffy. But at times it is serious as our artists turn their attention to some of the big issues we face in this country. It is not all light and fluffy. But there are lots of shows which are pure entertainment for entertainment’s sake. It is not exclusively South African, nor is it only featuring Cape Town artists, but both are represented most strongly on the programme. And it is not perfect. It is our first time out and, while we think we’ve done enough to make sure it blows you away and leaves you with some great memories and magical moments, there will be wrinkles and things we will realise we could have done better. And we’re sure you’ll let us know what those things are :) Meanwhile, though, have a great time. Whether you’re planning on seeing one show or ten, we’re glad you’re planning on being part of it. Make sure you see loads that stretches you, that takes you to unexpected places and introduces you to some new thinking and fresh talent. And join us for a drink, snack or cup of coffee in our Fringe Club upstairs in the City Hall – the heart and soul of the Fringe. It’s a place for you to commune, share the highs and lows of your day, and to lock your favourite artist, critic or director in conversation until the early hours.

Artistic Director, Cape Town Fringe
Amazing shows. And it’s all there for you…
Showcasing some of the best talent n behalf of the City of Cape Town, welcome to the very first Cape Town Fringe Festival. Whether you are one of the performing artists or an audience member, we are certain that this festival will be an enriching experience. We are excited to join the likes of New York, Hollywood, Edinburgh, Brighton and Amsterdam in hosting an event of this nature. It is our hope this festival will further consolidate Cape Town as the events capital of Africa. We take great pride in the artists of the city and the Cape Town Fringe is sure to showcase some of the best talent we have to offer. Through this initiative, we are able to create a platform for that talent, in a way that contributes to the growth of our tourism sector and creates jobs. This innovative model is a wonderful opportunity to bring art and business together in a creative and sustainable manner and we look forward to watching the growth of this flagship event in the future. As performances are on show in a variety of venues from the CBD to Langa, we also invite you to take some time to explore the city. Cape Town boasts a wide selection of activities for everyone to enjoy and the diversity of its people is its most magnificent attraction. We wish all of the artists well for their performances. You have the full support of the City of Cape Town, and we know that you will do us proud. All the best

HOW TO BOOK!
Booking opens on 25 August 2014 Visit www.capetownfringe.co.za or go through this programme and decide what you’d like to see. Then you have a couple of ways in which to make sure your first Cape Town Fringe is awesome. You can use our super-friendly website at www.capetownfringe.co.za and shop to your heart’s content, or if you prefer a friendly voice on the other end of a phone line, you can call 086 000 2004 and book your tickets with one of our call centre operators. zz Or you can fax or email your list of selected shows to 086 233 2022 / boxoffice@capetownfringe.co.za and our Box Office team will make your bookings for you. They’ll let you know if there are any clashes, cancellations, sold out shows, or changes to your schedule. zz School or Group Bookings must be emailed or faxed – our Box Office Manager will arrange these bookings and guide you through the process, ensuring that the appropriate discount is allocated. zz Cash or card bookings can be made in person at the Fringe Box Office in the City Hall from 23 September (8am to 10pm). zz
For online bookings, you will need your credit card handy. For phone, fax and email bookings, you can choose to pay by credit card, EFT or bank deposit. If shows are not sold out, tickets will also be available at the door 30 minutes prior to the start times of performances outside the City Hall (for shows in the City Hall, you can purchase tickets at the Box Office Express Till). No discounted tickets can be sold at the door – so if you’re bringing the kids, its best to pre-book and take advantage of the student discounts. Credit / debit cards cannot be used for tickets purchased at the door – it’s cash only.
TICKET COLLECTIONS – FROM 23 SEPTEMBER
If you have booked online or through our call centre, you will need to pick up your tickets from our Box Office on the first floor of the City Hall. It is open from 23 September. If you made an online booking, you will need the credit card you used to make your booking. Take this to the self-service kiosk in the City Hall Box Office, swipe your card and your
tickets will automatically be printed. The cashiers at the counters will also be able to print out your tickets for you. If you booked by phone, fax or email, you will need the reference number you were given when you made your booking. Give this number to the cashier on duty and they will print out your tickets for you.
VISITORS WITH A DISABILITY
Wheelchairs can be accommodated at some venues – but there are upstairs venues. Please contact the Box Office Manager on 086 000 2004 who will discuss your requirements and arrange assistance for you where necessary.

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the show is scheduled to begin. zz

#omnomnom Presented by Gavin Krastin Performance Art
This live art experience delves into notions of celebration, commemoration, consumerism and the problems thereof. Here the body is presented as a sexualised landscape of disaster, as aestheticised meat for consumption and as a terrain of extremis and anxiety to be negotiated, sapped, exploited, colonised and devoured. You are (awkwardly) invited to (un) celebrate with me at the premier (un)birthday dinner party of the year. Come, pull up a chair at the (autopsy) table of this transnational feast and eat me! Performance Poetry (Drama, Spoken word) A kaleidoscope of words, where rhythm and rhyme meet, it is the space where performance and poetry greet. #whynotpoetry is an awe-filled production that is set to change the standards and boundaries traditionally set for poetry. Including a play, a reading, a powerful spoken word performance and a visual collective poem recited in unison, this production asks a peculiar yet honest question, ‘why not poetry?’ ‘Why not give poetry a chance?’ After seeing this show, you will!

Theatre (Image Based) Using samples recycled from other stories, A Day, Across tells of a young woman looking for what connects her to her great-grandfather. A former member of the South African Native Labour Corps in WW1, all that remains of him are censored letters from France. By combining media from now and then, history is remixed and re-performed to link her present moment to a century ago. Her epic journey to find her past will take her across continents, images, and time. How did one shot in the Balkans echo so loudly that it is still heard in South Africa today? Dance (Contemporary) The Cape Academy of Performing Arts, winners of the Standard Bank Ovation Award 2013 for BitterSweet, presents Between the Lines. A poetic exploration of what exists behind words, the subtle complexities of subtext and hidden meanings through dance, spoken word and song. Beyond words lies the hidden truth and the essence of our inner selves hanging delicately between thought and gesture. Choreographers include Belinda Nusser, with a new South African Ballet, exploring human experiences through the contours and definitions of literal and figurative lines. The words jump off the pen and translate onto the performer’s bodies as you are transported to a place somewhere… between the lines.

Featuring 12 astonishing acts in under an hour, Amateur Hour! continues the mission of theatre collective Daddy’s Little Secret – to make theatre for the YouTube Generation. 2014). There is a saying that goes “secrets do not have a permanent home.” A reign of terror falls upon a small community in Kimberley. When a young girl is kidnapped, she attempts to escape, finding shelter in a recluse’s shack. This unwittingly opens a floodgate of long suppressed secrets about the girl, her mother and grandfather, leading to tragic consequences. This story aims to make the youth aware of the need for pride and dignity in ourselves, and takes its inspiration from the legacy of those who gave up their lives during the dark days of apartheid while Galeshewe was on fire, a time when people could be killed or burnt alive on hearsay and innuendo.

Saartjie was born in the Eastern Cape in 1789 exactly 200 years before Thola Antamu, the creator of this evocative piece. Like Antamu, she was also orphaned as a child. Saartjie lived to be only 24, after a life of seemingly never-ending struggle and lies, having been smuggled to England and there displayed as an exotic “show piece”. She was never to set foot on her home soil again. Exhibit S is Saartjie’s story fused with Antamu’s own and told through, speech, skin, and movement.

Having spent over two decades making music, as the preferred side-man to some of the country’s celebrated artists- Tsoaeli entered centre-stage with his long-awaited debut album, African Time in 2013, scooping the South African Music Award for Best Jazz Album in the process. This one-off performance will celebrate Tsoaeli’s love and mastery of the double bass as he is joined by some of his friends and contemporaries. Happy Days, by absurdist playwright Samuel Beckett, deals with our attempts to ward off existential isolation by endless chatter and rituals. Director, Zena Wood, adds visual stimulation to the experience of isolated entrapment which the character, Winnie, experiences with a visually smothering dress. Winnie represents the colonial woman in a patriarchal, conservative South African culture. In our multi-lingual, multi-cultural country we are trying to communicate through barriers. Words fail. Active listening becomes difficult and loneliness and confusion is experienced within our own culture and identity as we try to pass the time amicably until our own mortality merges into reality.

present If these bodies could speak. Bailey Snyman (Standard Bank Young Artist for Dance 2012 – Moffie) and Nicola Haskins (Standard Bank Ovation Award 2011 – As Night Falls) choreograph and perform in this visceral, experiential experiment in the body that examines a relationship from the inside out. The work portrays the visceral experience from inside the body and reveals the lived experience of the body allowing the ‘body to speak’. The bodies become sites of conflict where they negotiate their internal biology and external expression. The work navigates between anxiety, serenity, fight and flight as the work maps the journey of a couple in, through, around and out of itself.

Comedy Who are you? Are you your job, your photo’s on Facebook, or are you really, in between all the platforms the internet gives us, still a version of yourself? Hutsetiket (the Afrikaans word for hashtag) is a one woman Afrikaans comedy taking a new perspective on the social media phenomenon. The production follows Anelina Stein (Elizna Vermeulen) as she decides to take her ‘talents’ to the internet. She wants her Tweets to be quoted in Die Burger and the Pretoria hipsters to follow her on Instagram. This off-beat comedy will leave audiences feeling refreshed and wanting more after seeing this enthralling performance from a very talented up-and-coming actress.

Starring the multi award-winning duo of Nicholas Ellenbogen and Claire Berlein, Live With Ivy journeys from Nyasaland (Malawi) in the 1950s to London’s West End in the 1980s. The Garrick family have been actors for generations – but young Ivy is caught between choosing law or following in her uncle Rex’s footsteps on the stage. This lyrical story gently guides you down the lanes of African nostalgia through the eyes of Ivy, who starts off as an innocent 11-year-old girl and follows her through the most memorable seasons of her life.

Theatre (Puppetry & mask work) The End came – it seemed no order could ever be restored, but then a new king ascended. Macbeth served him, won his battles, and still there was no fitting reward. Duncan chose his son knowing Macbeth had none. Well acquainted with the contempt saved for the child-less, his wife had seen this coming. But the most important question is: Where and how does she see herself? These different facets of the woman don’t always see eye-to-eye; so what happens when they come into conflict with one another? Does she have to silence one part of herself because of another; and is this possible? Meerfout deals with the conflict between expectation and obligation. Family Theatre Narrative Dreams is a nostalgic and beautiful piece exploring two very different childhoods, which share, despite their differences, a sense of isolation and loneliness. Narrative Dreams tells the coming of age story of two boys from different worlds, Morena and David, who puzzle their way through the tumultuous, playful years of childhood life in search of friendship, acceptance and wholeness. As they grow into adolescence David and Morena try to make sense of the world into which they are moving. They face challenges that accompany their journey and start to ask questions about whether they will be able to realise the dreams of their childhood.

Theatre (lecture performance) A gripping story by Franz Kafka about an ape, Rooi Piet, giving a report to an academy about the course of his life. After being captured in the jungles of Africa and taken to Hamburg by ship, he tries to survive his new caged existence by imitating human behaviour. Piet’s imitation of humans is so successful that it becomes a rewarding career. His report about his transformation from ape to human serves as a sober perspective about what it is to be human and how humans behave. It also takes a look at how culture, civilisation and the conventions of nature contort and how humanity, as a result of acquired behaviour, can never really be free. sell-out run in Germany. When Amelia and Andile fall into a concussion at the same moment, they meet in each other’s confused minds and are drawn back to 1997; the year of Ninja Turtles, bicycles and ‘I believe I can fly’. And the year when their friendship was shattered by a place in which even a child cannot feel at ease. Skipping from the lightness of play to the dark borders of loneliness, this is “a piece of theatre that will leave you breathless” (Cue). Directed by Joanna Evans (King Kong What What), featuring Amy Wilson and Aphiwe Livi with original sound by John Withers (John Wizards).

Worst of Both Worlds is the 2012 Best of the Baxter’s Zabalaza Theatre Festival winner. Written and directed by Bulelani Mabutyana it features Thando Tsuselo and Lubabalo Nontwana in this cleverly-crafted two-hander which played to great acclaim at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio in 2012. Performed in English and isiXhosa, the play tackles the issue of human child trafficking head-on using a unique and fresh style of physical theatre combined with strong elements of storytelling. The narrative deals with the journey of a girl who is abducted and trafficked at a young age, having to grow up under slavery of prostitution and its implications on her life.

extraordinary storyteller, enters this world and is embraced by our particularly indigenous South African style of good manners. South Africa’s transformation anticipates community involvement in restructuring and developing the land we struggled for. Love and learning begin. The show is for those of us who never knew, who have forgotten, who feel out of touch with our essence, and those of us who are willing to learn to be freely and enthusiastically South African. Wish you were (t)here, a one-hander of excellence exudes spontaneity and ambiguous hilarity – truly South African! Written and performed by: Dinah Eppel Directed by: Tossie van Tonder aka Nobonke
Storytelling It is 1995. In the Cape townships, an inclusive, openhearted, forgiving, generous spirit lies waiting. We have been invited to unite and build together. Dinah Eppel,

Whistle Stop
Physical Theatre “Whistle Stop is an excellent piece of theatre: beautifully polished and spellbinding.” – Sarah Roberson, Artsblog. Winner of a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award and a PANSA New Writer’s Award, this is a love story like no other. A man, a woman, some whistling and all the hidden things we think but never allow ourselves to say… This absurd two-hander travels beyond the present moment and whistles into the darker recesses of the twisted mind. “Hilarious, fumbling internal monologues will bring joy to the most hardened heart. Fabulous script, outstanding performance!”- Lisl Griffioen, Cue. “Everything about it charmed me.” – Moira de Swardt.
