Getting to know the artistic decision-makers of festivals is the first step into understanding how festivals select or commission their programmes. This daily one-hour series introduces some festival directors who discuss their programming strategies and offer you opportunities to pitch for their festivals.

Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees

Suidoosterfees

The ABSA Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees seeks to promote the arts in South Africa primarily, though not exclusively, through the medium of Afrikaans, the lingua franca of its host communities in the Klein Karoo. Its mission is to be a leading and inclusive South African arts festival that offers a unique experience in its programmes and as a destination in Oudtshoorn annually over eight days during the Easter school holidays. The programme typically comprises close to eighty drama and music theatre productions, about half of which début at the festival, plus several dozen dance, children’s and street theatre programmes, classical music recitals, and several hundred contemporary music performances. Over a dozen visual art exhibitions, complemented by lifestyle excursions showcasing the sights, food and wine of the Klein Karoo round off the offering, which typically includes well over a thousand individual events.

Designed to celebrate the Cape Afrikaans lifestyle and to promote social diversity through Afrikaans and visual theatre, the Suidoosterfees is a cultural celebration in the heart of the Cape. It offers its audiences affordable, high quality Afrikaans-based productions, and creates opportunities for growing new and previously marginalised audiences.  

Arts Alive Festival

Musho! Festival

The annual Joburg Arts Alive International Festival is a project of the City of Johannesburg that gives back to its residents and visitors through a combination of free and accessibly priced arts and culture events. Taking place in spring each year and usually running for almost the full month of September, the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival covers all seven regions of the City of Joburg – with the Newtown Precinct forming the heart of the month-long event through a programme that covers music, dance, theatre, poetry/spoken word, visual art, comedy, film, as well as exhibitions and workshops. From 2009 to 2010, the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival has been produced and managed for the City of Joburg by Zanusi Brand Solutions.

The Musho! Festival has become an exciting annual event in Durban, bringing together performers and audiences in a feast of new theatre. The first Musho! Theatre Festival was held in Durban in 2006 and has become a popular annual event, showcasing the best in one- and two-hander plays. The festival pays tribute to the artistry involved in these small productions, and promotes this intimate and engaging style of theatre. The festival’s home is the Catalina Theatre on Wilsons Wharf, that, with an audience capacity of just 160, makes for intimate performances. Audiences have come to appreciate this small and friendly festival that showcases a carefully selected variety of productions to run over the course of 5 days early in January each year. The festival is co-ordinated by The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA). Atelier for young Festival Managers & Proyecto 34°S

National Schools Festival The Grahamstown Foundation’s Arts Education department runs several provincial festivals and a national festival. These festivals ignite a passion for South African arts and develop artists, and arts consumers with a culture of ‘paying for the arts’. Self-expression and bridge-building between individuals and communities are focal points while platforms for performance encourage audiences to engage with the best South Africa has to offer motivating young artists to discover and develop their own artistic skills.

The Atelier is a unique mentoring programme initiated and developed by the European Festivals Association (EFA) to nurture future festival leaders. Nikki Froneman, founder and director of Proyecto 34°S, attended the Atelier for Young Festival Managers in Singapore – a rigorous one-week training programme, designed by the EFA to meet the need of equipping new generations of festival managers. In this informal discussion she shares what she learnt in Singapore and chats about Proyecto 34°S, an independent organisation that promotes artistic exchange between Africa and Latin America – how it works, what it does, the power of volunteers and teamwork, and its core projects such as Theatre in Translation and the long-term project of twin festivals in Africa and Latin America.

LAWYERS, ACCOUNTANTS, PHILANTHROPISTS & DREAMERS: Strategies to find the right match for your Board

Virtually every arts and cultural organisation – and virtually every NGO in whatever area of work – has a governing board or council. This workshop will explore how to recruit the right kinds of members and to acculturate them into the goals and purposes of your organisation. Crucial issues to be discussed will include the role of board members in fundraising, strategic goal-setting, representing their organisation to government, business and the rest of society. In addition, the sessions will speak to how to make the best possible use of board or council members who are assigned to an organisation from government or another sponsoring body. Perhaps the most difficult issue for an organisation is when or how to encourage a board member to withdraw from the association and this workshop will discuss strategies to deal with this question as well. This two-part series presented by Market Theatre Foundation Council Member and Acting CEO J. Brooks Spector will also discuss how an effective arts administrator nurtures the crucial relationship between an organisation’s board and its management. Presenter: J. Brooks Spector (Acting CEO: Market Theatre Foundation) Date: Wednesday 6 July 2011 Time: 10:00 Venue: Seminar Room 1, Eden Grove

Participants will be given pointers on what an art organisation is required to do when looking for support in the corporate sector. Compliance and how a lack thereof can be an impediment in accessing opportunities from the corporate sector using B-BBEE as a vehicle will also be explored. The importance of governance and statutory related issues such BEE rating will also be discussed. This workshop is recommended for arts managers and arts administrators who grapple with issues of funding and B-BBEE. The workshop will be led by Sisa Jack, the Head of Programmes at Africa Empowered. Sisa is passionate about the performing arts. He joined the Boardbank SA in 2008 as a Director. Brian Garman

Brian Garman is the designer of this year’s National Arts Festival’s Programme. He is also the art director and designer of the Festival newspaper, Cue, and designer of the Rhodes Journalism Review. He found his way into graphic design via a somewhat unusual route. After completing his A-levels in Zimbabwe, he went to university in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa where he obtained an Honours degree in Microbiology and Plant Pathology. After having worked for a plant breeding company, an agricultural NGO and as a lecturer in Plant Pathology and Mycology for several years, he decided that journalism and design were much more interesting... He worked for a number of years as a freelance designer and eventually took up a teaching post in design in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University in 1999. While working on the designs for this year’s National Arts Festival booking kit, Brian identified a number of pointers that he would like to share with artists and publicists about how they can improve the design strategies for their production’s marketing; and thereby have a greater impact on the way in which potential audiences could respond to their work.
