ADVANCED ELECTIVES

PREPARE FOR SUCCESS BEYOND SCHOOL

At Kingswood, we understand that the modern workplace demands more than just traditional academic success.

Our Advanced Electives programme is designed to equip pupils with the ability to think critically, problem solve, collaborate and develop intellectual resilience. This unique opportunity will help pupils develop confidence, maturity and transferable skills, setting them

up to engage positively with higher education, apprenticeships and future employment.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

Universities and employers are looking for individuals who go beyond the standard curriculum. Our Advanced Electives programme helps pupils stand out by fostering a love of learning, encouraging intellectual risk-taking and promoting in-depth research and communication skills. These courses will inspire pupils to cultivate a habit of reading for pleasure and engage meaningfully with diverse subject areas and new skills.

CORE PRINCIPLES OF THE PROGRAMME

Our courses are designed around key principles that ensure a well-rounded educational experience:

Emotional and Practical Intelligence: Nurturing a love of learning beyond exams in a free-thinking environment.

Intellectual Risk-Taking: Challenging pupils to think creatively and work independently.

Employability Skills: Enhancing abilities in discussion, debate, communication, creative problem-solving and critical thinking.

Academic Enrichment: Providing opportunities for deep engagement in chosen areas of interest.

Strengthening Applications: Broadening pupils’ understanding of various fields, preparing them for university, apprenticeships and employment.

A UNIQUE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Year 12 pupils at Kingswood will embark on bespoke ten or twenty-week courses crafted by our expert teachers.

Learning takes place in a seminarstyle environment that mirrors higher education settings, with an emphasis on discussion and debate rather than formal assessments. This approach builds the confidence and communication skills essential for university, apprenticeship and job interviews, adding valuable breadth and depth to our curriculum.

PUPIL REFLECTIONS

“In Introduction to Criminology we studied interesting examples of criminality, learnt about forensic scientists and their role in crime scenes, and explored qualities that lead to criminality, for example their psychological background. A skill I honed was teamwork as we worked together to analyse and investigate a crime scene, helping each other to find tiny details. The teacher put in so much effort to make it as interesting and fun as possible while also effectively teaching different aspects of criminology. He even spent a lot of time creating a mock crime scene for us to investigate which I really enjoyed.”

“AFA (Apprenticeship in Fine Arts) taught me to constructively criticise others’ creative writing, and how to write effective flash fiction and short stories using a variety of prompts, styles and themes. We also tried our hand at writing scripts for theatre.”

“During Art Unlocked I learnt about History of Art from architecture and sculpture to painting. We analysed some very cool paintings and then presented a painting of our choice to the class. I acquired the skill of analysing, by thinking deeply about paintings and trying to understand them for myself.”

“In Environmental Science we learnt about how the world was made. We studied how people have protected the world in the past and how we can protect it in the future. I had to research the reintroduction of bison into Poland, which improved my independent research skills. The course was really fun and informative.”
