DEVELOPMENT NEWS

ISSUE 1 | JANUARY 2020

I am delighted to have this opportunity to write some words of introduction to Graham Papenfus' first Development Newsletter.

As I approach the end of my 12-year tenure as Headmaster in 2020 and we look forward to our 275th anniversary in 2023, it makes sense to reect on the type of school we are, how we have arrived here and where we are heading. Kingswood has, in its various guises over its rich and distinctive history, been a school which has always not only sought unashamedly to promote scholarship and all-round excellence but, in doing so, has been utterly committed to both the individual and the community within an environment which is both aspirational and unpretentious. If we are to remain true to our roots whilst also being a school which is forward-looking and inclusive, then our development plans should be closely aligned to our core aims. Broadening access so that every child with the right attributes might have the benefit of a Kingswood

education has been a central aspect of our strategy over the past decade, as has developing our facilities to match the needs of a student body whom we are preparing for a dynamic and fast-changing workplace. As we look to the next stage of our development, we are enthusiastically looking to build on the early successes of our 10 for 1 bursary programme, whilst also focusing on a hub in the centre of the school which promotes both mental and physical well-being. Both these projects are very close to my heart; I do hope you may be able to support us as we seek to secure the funding which will enable these vitally important projects to be realised. With all my very best wishes

Simon Morris - Headmaster

WELCOME A very warm welcome to the first Development News, a new annual newsletter from the Development Office. I joined Kingswood School two and a half years ago after establishing Development Programmes in South Africa, Zimbabwe and, for the past 18 years, in the UK at Claremont Fan Court School, Haileybury College, Ipswich School and Dean Close School. It is wonderful to be back in the Kingswood ‘family’ after attending Kingswood College in Grahamstown, South Africa for 10 years. I was honoured to be able to take Simon Morris to visit my old school to join their 125th anniversary celebrations in the summer holidays this year, where we met up with current Bath pupils who were on an exchange programme. (Kingswood Bath has had an exchange with Kingswood Grahamstown for over 20 years). We also cheered on our rugby and hockey teams who started their tour of South Africa playing against Kingswood College.

I have had the pleasure of meeting a wide range of ‘Kingswoodians’ at the 30 events I have helped organise and attend this year. These have been in the UK, America, Canada, Hong Kong, Thailand and South Africa. I have also particularly enjoyed being able to say thank you to the members of the 1748 Society who have included Kingswood in their Wills, as well as our very generous donors at the annual donor thank you event in the summer. Michele Greene, Development and Alumni Officer, looks forward to hearing from you should you have any questions about any of our events. The centre pages of this newsletter look ahead to 2023

when Kingswood celebrates its 275th anniversary. The Kingswood275 Campaign has been established to support two very important projects:  Life-changing bursaries via the 10 for 1 Bursary Fund  Sport and Well-Being Hub The 10 for 1 Bursary Fund provides transformational (100%+) bursaries by asking 10 people to pledge £100pm for seven years. This, together with Gift Aid, fully funds one day pupil for seven years in the senior school. The Sport & Well-Being Hub will provide a dedicated and custombuilt space for physical conditioning and well-being as well as mental well-being in the vacant area behind the existing gym. Please do get in touch if you would like to find out more about the Kingswood275 Campaign or about an upcoming event. I very much look forward to hearing from you and hopefully meeting you in 2020. Kind regards

Community Suppers are organised four times a year and Business Networking events twice a year at the School. There are also opportunities for companies to join the corporate partnership scheme. I was thrilled to welcome Old

Kingswoodian Greg Harris from Unividual as our first corporate partner. Please do get in touch if you would like to find out more about the corporate partner scheme. Kingswood is John Wesley’s School, the oldest Methodist School and the only school John Wesley founded in 1748. I have been humbled by the welcome I have received when visiting Methodist Churches, Schools and University’s in the UK, USA, Canada and South Africa.

Greg Harris, Chartered Financial Planner

“Reconnecting with Kingswood at a business level has been very nostalgic and provided a number of opportunities through past acquaintances. It has been great to see the School still has the same core ethos and being a small part of its future is very rewarding.”

KINGSWOOD CELEBRATES 275 YEARS IN 2023

2023 marks the 275th anniversary of the founding of Kingswood School by John Wesley in 1748. As the School looks to the future with ambition, it is committed to both maintaining the values which have served the School so well since its foundation and to embracing the exciting challenges which face our young people in the 21st century. The School’s vision is to prepare each of our pupils to make a difference and more especially, to enhance others’ lives whilst doing so. In order to achieve this, we are seeking to build ambitiously on our existing strengths. Whilst we do not benefit from any significant endowments, we are wholly committed to the concept of a Kingswood education being available to those young people who are most suited to what we offer.

CAMPAIGN PHASES The first phase of the Kingswood275 Campaign has been launched to provide funding for increased bursaries via the 10 for 1 Bursary Fund and the next phase of the campus development via the Sport & Well-Being Hub. Future phases will include a new Sixth Form Centre, Sports Hall and Pool, Innovation Centre, Assembly and Dining Hall and Performing Arts Centre which are part of the Masterplan as we look ahead to the School’s 300th anniversary in 2048.

“The Governing Body at Kingswood is committed to maintain John Wesley’s vision of high quality, all round education being available to as many young people as possible. The Kingswood275 Campaign is our latest manifestation of this vision as it targets to raise funds for transformational bursary support and carefully targeted improvements to the School’s estate.” Tim Westbrook, Chair of Governors and the Kingswood 275 Campaign Board

THE 10 FOR 1 BURSARY FUND The 10 for 1 Bursary Fund provides life-changing opportunities for 100%+ bursaries where 10 people pledge £100pm for seven years which, together with Gift Aid, fully funds a day pupil through seven years in the senior school. The first 10 for 1 pupil is in her second year after completing a very successful first year and the 10 donors required to fund the second 10 for 1 Bursary are progressing well.

“With my daughter being awarded a full bursary, the whole family has felt included and accepted. It would not have been possible for me without the help of Kingswood. She is so happy, steady and full of promise. In fact we all feel the palpable warmth and benevolence of the School and it’s such a positive thing for us all - Thank you.” Mother of the first 10 for 1 Bursary

SPORT & WELL-BEING HUB The new Sport & Well-Being Hub (pictured opposite) will increase capacity and opportunities for our pupils with regards to both physical and mental well-being. “The Hub will open up a range of new opportunities for our pupils and serve the current demand for a larger gym space and a multipurpose studio.” Tim Reeman, Director of Sport

NORTH AMERICAN ADVISORY BOARD A voluntary North American Advisory Board was established this year to act as ambassadors helping deepen the links with members of the Kingswood North American Community, organise periodic reunions and help identify potential donors to the Kingswood275 Campaign. I am very grateful to Old Kingswoodian Richard Vaughan who is the first chair of this Board. Current Board members are Old Kingswoodians Bruce Hoof, Meg Kerr, Kate Meigneux and Adom Knadjian. “Over past few years there has been a concerted effort to reach out to the North American Kingswood community. A board has been appointed with a mandate to actively engage and be a focal point for all OKs in America and Canada. We hope this will encourage OKs to remain connected, find old friends, develop new ones and find out what is happening at their old school.” Plans for an Asia-Pacific Board are currently being explored.
