Hello. Hello friends that I know and friends that I have not met yet. Chris.Harrison@kingwoodumc.org Do you remember what it was like the first time you went to a new school or started a new grade? I loved school, but my memory goes straight to sixth grade. There was a lot going on at the beginning of that school year. We were moving to a new building with all new teachers. Sixth grade also meant we got to tryout for football for the first time. I was excited and nervous. What if I wasn‘t good enough, would everyone laugh at me? To make matters worse I was getting bullied pretty badly and the result was a horrible stomach ache that made me miss the first four days of school. Do you know what finally got me to school? One of the teachers/ football coaches called the house

to ask if I was okay. Then he came over to check on me. His efforts made all the difference in the world to me. And once I got into my new classes and made the football team it was one of my favorite years! Sometimes I think that going to a church, especially for the first time, is a lot like the start of a school year. Lots of nerves and question marks and hopes that everything will turn out okay. And to help us overcome our fears and hesitations, it sure is great to find a friendly face that cares enough to stop and say hello and make sure we are doing well.
you step onto our campus or check us out online. Our welcome is genuine and motivated by the love of Christ that opens doors to new possibilities, new opportunities for study, growth, service and bonding in community for all ages! Our wish through this publication is that you might feel a warm welcome from within and also get a glimpse of the exciting possibilities available to you at KUMC. We would love to have you come and do life with us and find the more that life in Christ can offer to you and your family! Prayers that our new school year begins well and that our encounters with one another and with God move us into new adventures! May God bless us for each step of the journey!
At KUMC, we strive to be the kind of place and people that helps everyone feel welcomed,

New beginnings.
Matt.Robinson@kingwoodumc.org “The thrill of new beginnings is immensely alluring!” ― Avijeet Das (author) A journey begins with a first step. Some five months ago, I stood in front of a large contingent of singers in the KUMC choir room. There were almost 80 people in the room who had come to see if the new guy had “game.” Over the next few days, I went through several meetings and moments of waiting as the church and I prayerfully considered what our next steps would be. I got the job . . . and, now I have to do the job.
KIngwood United 2019
Since beginning in May, I’ve undertaken a time of discernment to understand the strengths of the music and arts program as well as areas in which we need to grow. And, as the caretaker of the ministry, I’ve prayerfully listened to those around me who have joys and concerns about the KUMC music ministry. I must say . . . it’s very exciting. And so we begin this Fall with a wonderful team of staff musicians and volunteers ready to sing to the glory of God. I invite you to join us as we share in this adventure. Haven’t sung in a choir in a while? Come give us a try. Want to ring a handbell? We can teach you. Want your children
involved in outstanding music in worship? We’ve got just the place for them. It all starts soon. Join us, won’t you.

music Requiem: Eternal Light By H. Goodall A Remembrance for All-Saints November 3 | 2p Chancel Choir & String Orchestra (childcare available) Join us for Eternal Light, a requiem by award-winning British composer Howard Goodall, who is best known for his compositions for television and film, including music from “The Vicar of Dibley.” Eternal Light: A Requiem has had over 500 live performances since its premiere in 2008 and won Goodall a Classical BRIT award for “Composer of the Year.” Through this glorious music, the Chancel Choir and string orchestra will lead the congregation in a remembrance of those who have passed away in both the recent past and beyond. It is a beautiful piece of music that speaks to anyone who has suffered a loss. In addition to the music, there will be readings and visuals creating a tapestry of sight and sound.
What is a requiem? A requiem in purest form is a specific latin mass for those who have died. Goodall’s work uses English and Latin text in a tuneful remembrance for those who are remembering their loved ones. It is intended to provide solace, reflecting on the words of the Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. Speaking about the work, Howard Goodall said, ''For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the loss of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us
in the afterlife. This, like Johannes Brahms’, is a Requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, a Requiem focusing on the consequences of interrupted lives.” Want to sing with the Chancel Choir in preparation of this work? Join us on Wednesday evenings starting August 14. For more information, contact Director of Music Ministries Matt Robinson.
King's Ringers The King’s Ringers, our handbell choir, offers the opportunity for individuals to worship God through music by the playing of handbells. Throughout the year our handbell choir provides music for selected worship services. Most of the ringers are not professional musicians who get paid for entertaining an audience. Rather, they are volunteers who love music and have a passion to share their faith through the ringing of handbells.
The choir rehearses in the music ministry area on Sunday afternoons immediately following the 11:00 AM worship service. Rehearsals start August 25, 2019 and are directed by Matt Robinson. Interested in joining the King’s Ringers? Ringing in a handbell choir is truly a wonderful experience. Successful ringers have a true passion for ringing handbells. You will be a part of a very close group making music together. Contact Matt Robinson for more details.

missions Oaks of Righteousness_August MMO Chris.Harrison@kingwoodumc.org
Oaks of Righteousness serves as a residence where women who were previously incarcerated can receive the Christian love and support needed to transition back into the free world. Oaks has been chosen as the monthly mission opportunity for August. Past giving to Oaks has covered monthly expenses for staff and residents, while providing the residents with Bible studies, Christian psychological counseling, participation in the Celebration Recovery program, employment training in the WorkFaith program, and financial management counseling. Oaks is now in the process of identifying new goals as it matures as an organization. Possibilities include a graduate facility that would provide longer term housing, a larger facility, or an additional facility. We are also actively seeking broader volunteer and financial support through other churches and endowments from grants. We are grateful for your support in the past, and we ask that you give generously this August to help support these new objectives.

"Bless the Children Ministry‘s heart is to be the love of Christ to Uganda‘s orphaned and vulnerable children, equipping them to become authentic godly leaders that transform generations. We desire to create a Christcentered culture for these children through holistic family style care. We hug them, feed them, teach them to read and write, counsel them when they are struggling, and teach them about Jesus‘ unconditional love.“ Marsha and one of her partners at Bless the Children Uganda will share their story Sunday, September 8 during our morning worship time.
many of whom were AIDS orphans, a safe place to eat. Today, the feeding center has grown, and approximately 250 children and 75 widows and elderly are fed 3 times a week. For some, these meals of rice, beans, bananas and fresh well water may be the only food they have except for what they beg. But they receive much more than just food at the feeding center. Everyone receives a vitamin, and there is access to a doctor. There is a program of worship with singing, dancing, Bible readings and prayer. The latest addition to the program is Bible stories using felt board and
Biblical figures. Your gift will offer the physical and spiritual nourishment needed by these children of God to experience the love of Christ and live more fully!

missions Go Box Anti-Trafficking Training Chris.Harrison@kingwoodumc.org
Every day and night around Houston there are boys and girls, young men and women, who have been enslaved in human trafficking. Some are involved in forced labor and others are being sexually abused multiple times each night. Human trafficking is organized crime and human sin at its worst and our city and communities are right in the middle of it. What can we do to stop the violence? Come join our church and others who are standing with the Freedom Church Alliance to eradicate this evil from our midst. A comprehensive resource known as a Go Box has been developed to educate us and equip us to find our place in which to serve. Go Boxes will be on sale for $20. On five subsequent evenings, beginning October 14th at 7pm, we will meet people and organizations who are actively involved in ministries fighting human trafficking. We will learn warning signs, how to protect our children, and how to stand up and join the fight. For more information contact Chris Harrison at chris.harrison@kingwoodumc.org.
Sager Brown. Chris.Harrison@kingwoodumc.org

care GriefShare
Donna.Smith@kingwoodumc.org “When I lost my wife, Ann, and then experienced the emptiness and all the other emotions that can go with that, it eventually became clear to me that I needed to be around others who had experienced loss as well. Regardless of whether it is a spouse, child, parent, or other, the ones who “get it” are the ones who have made, or are making that journey through grief. Fortunately, the church had reached out with an invitation to attend a GriefShare class, and I eventually accepted. Initially, I was unsure as to how it would help, or how I’d react once in a class. However, after a few sessions, I realized that I was getting that association “with others in the same boat”, and that the course curriculum was a strong reinforcement and answer to some of the questions that we all can have in time of loss. When asked if I would help facilitate a class, it seemed only natural to help others who might need the help and benefit from a GriefShare Class.” - Alan James One of the ways KUMC ministers to those who have experienced the death of a loved one is to offer a support group with an emphasis on growing from mourning to joy. This group is called GriefShare, and is a 13 week journey for hope and healing in the midst of grief. We have been doing this program here at KUMC for many years and have found it to be very helpful to those who are grieving the loss of their loved one(s). Classes will held on Mondays starting September 16th – December 9th. There will be a morning class 10:00a-12:00p and an evening class from 6:30p-8:30p. Both classes will be held in Building C, Room E-204. care The Gathering Place.
Donna.Smith@kingwoodumc.org “I quickly learned five years ago after joining Kingwood Women’s Club and sampling volunteering opportunities that The Gathering Place was where I wanted to invest my time. I immediately fell in love with our care partners and their families. It was so rewarding to see the smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the crafts, games and especially the music which unlocked so many memories for them! My own mother was able to attend several times a year as she visited me from out of town and then became a permanent care partner after relocating here in Jan. 2019. The other volunteers always gave her such a warm welcome and made her feel so very special. She had spent years herself passionately advocating and volunteering for the elderly and was so impressed by this monthly event . Unfortunately, complications from a fall led to her death in June, but I will always treasure the happy times we were able to share together at The Gathering Place. I’m so grateful to KUMC for hosting this unique and meaningful ministry”. Stephanie Fisher The Gathering Place is a free respite service offered once per month (2nd Friday of every month) by Kingwood UMC and Care Partners. It is a respite program for caregivers of loved ones with dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s, early stage Alzheimer’s or other disabilities. Caring, competent volunteers provide a break for the caregiver. Drop-off for your loved one is at 10:00a, and pickup is at 1:00p. The Gathering Place has a theme each month to help the care partner identify with the current season, event, and/ or holiday. The program includes activities such as music and games, chair exercises, interactive conversation, memory-enhancing activities, crafts, guest performers, and lunch. If you are interested in learning more about the program or would like to register your loved one, please contact Katelin Jordan with CarePartners at (713) 682-5995. discipleship Following Jesus.
John.McMann@kingwoodumc.org Early in my Christian journey I yearned to learn more about the faith and what it meant to follow after Jesus. This led me to seminary and some of the most formative years of my life, but what stands out even above theological and pastoral training, is the beginning of the formation of my walk by small group ministry. Finding myself in a small group of men and women and a smaller group of men for accountability; I began to learn about the transformative power of community. Confessing sin, sharing vulnerably, engaging in disagreement are all things that still give me great anxiety and yet these possibilities are worth enduring to experience God’s glory in being known and knowing others deeply. Appropriately, one of the great joys of my life is serving the Discipleship ministries of Kingwood United Methodist Church where every day we see opportunities for people to not simply learn about Jesus but learn to take steps following Him. One of the newer movements of God are our More to Life Groups. Almost every day of the week a group is meeting somewhere in the Northeast Houston area in host homes with members of KUMC and nonmembers alike. These twelve groups with over 100+ participants come together to “encourage one another in love” and help walk this faith journey. Not a Bible Study, a lecture, or a class, the More to Life Group focuses on one main question; “How is your life in God this week?” In other words, how are you living out your faith right now? In response to member’s share, people have the opportunity to ask questions, share scripture, and intentionally pray for one another. Now, the emphasis is no longer having the “right answers” but living the right answers. God has brought together diverse families of grandparents, new parents, singles, stay-athome dads, doctors, and saleswomen. A member of this movement, Emily Priesmeyer shares about her experience: “Mondays have taken on a new attitude since I became part of a More to Life group! I can’t wait to hear how God is working in everyone’s lives on Monday nights, and I wouldn’t miss it for anything! The Holy Spirit meets us in that space each week and we hear an encouraging message, a hard truth, or an affirmation He knows we need. Building a strong small community within our larger church community also helps me feel more connected to the body of Christ. I feel like an actual Christian! Knowing that we are praying for each other throughout the week, and that I have a place where I can be vulnerable without fear is life-giving!” In my time at KUMC this continues to be one of the more spectacular supernatural movements of God that I have seen. People that have been in the church for decades are learning to pray for the first time, marriages are being restored, physical and spiritual healing taking place, and disciples learning that there is more that God has for us. A recent surprise was a phone call from a church member at Watercrest Retirement Community who heard what God was going and wanted to bring groups to Watercrest. Now we are meeting every Tuesday afternoon with about twenty senior citizen residents —many with little to no community, all of them with the desire to help others find community at Watercrest. discipleship
Personally, More to Life Groups have helped my wife, Lauren, and I participate in a way that opens up important marriage conversations about our life together in Christ. It is in these groups that I have become conditioned to consider how I am living my faith as a husband, dad, pastor and it is a place where I know people are praying for me daily. As a pastor, I know a lot of things about the faith but sometimes it is the daily living that still plagues me. Dietrich Bonheoffer puts it well, “Who can really be faithful in great things if he has not learned to be faithful in the things of daily life? More to life Groups assist us in this journey. Friends at KUMC, would you pray for this movement of God in our church? Would you consider joining a More to Life Group and find a new level of hope and joy in Christ? My prayer is that we all consider our participation in the body of Christ, finding ways to make following Jesus our priority.

thursday_women Twelve More Women of the Bible by Sherry Harney REAL WOMEN. REAL TRIALS. REAL TRIUMPHS “In this compelling, insightful and thought-provoking study you will hear from six of today’s best-loved Christian authors (such as Lisa Harper and Chrystal Evans-Hurst) as they explore the spiritual lessons learned from twelve women in the Bible and what they mean for us in the 21st century. Whether these women are mentioned in a single paragraph, only to disappear back into history, or have an entire book of the Bible written about them, their faith journeys speak volumes of the importance of women to God. In every story you will find women’s lives filled with the presence and power of the Living God. Their appearance in the Bible, be it brief or expansive, is divinely ordained. Their life lessons are eternal. Their lives mattered to God, and they should matter to each of us as well. In this study, we will examine these women’s successes and failures, see how they drew near to God in the midst of trials and learn how they overcame rejection and disappointment. Their stories will inspire you to persevere through difficult and challenging times, help you find joy in the hope that Jesus provides and discover new insights into God’s character.“ As we delve into each of the twelve Biblical women’s lives we will discover how to: • Apply Biblical lessons to our modern-day struggles • Live through our successes as well as our failures • Draw near to God in a world filled with trials • Find lasting contentment in every situation • Overcome rejection and insecurity… and much more When: August 15- November 7 Where: E 200/201 Kingwood United Methodist Church Registration Cost: $10 To register or with any questions, contact Leta Barksdale letabarks2702@gmail.com Vicki Smith vicki5502@gmail.com

young_moms Open Your Bible by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams This group welcomes any mom of newborns or any age child in school. All children are different and all moms are different, but we can learn from each other’s experiences. Encouragement, prayer, tears, laughter and help with meals are available to you! Newborns are always welcome in our study until you and the nursery are ready for each other. We will meet you wherever you are in your spiritual journey, even if this is your first study. We will be studying OPEN YOUR BIBLE by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams “God’s Word is for you and for now. Are you longing to hear from God, aching to know who He really is? The beautiful truth is this – we can encounter the living God today and every day in the pages of His Word.” This study will give you a greater appreciation for the Word of God, a deeper understanding of its authority, and a stronger desire to know the Bible inside and out. We will be doing another study (tbd) once this one concludes at the end of October. Classes will begin on Wednesdays, September 4th – December 11th, 2019 in Rooms E-200/201. Fellowship and breakfast snacks begin at 9:00a when the nursery is open. Class begins at 9:30 with nursery pick up at 11:30. The study guide is $15.
