Concept & Inspiration
Woodworking is an age old craft that has originated from Asia and is practiced in India with great passion and dedication. In forested areas especially it is enjoyed and considered as an occupation for many locals. It serves as a great past time and source of income as well for artisans and craftsmen in the country. My concept revolves around the same intriguing aspect of woodworking which highlights the creativity of sculpting and carving logs and roots into beautiful utility products. The journey started when I was exploring options of documenting various crafts in and near Auroville, a township near the city of Pondicherry. Woodcraft appeared to be a novel project to record and learn more about. ‘Wood’ always looks and feels great be it cutlery, toys, furniture or décor. Fathom experiencing the art of making these beautiful products come alive! Handcrafted and customized. The need and desire to explore this meticulous area of craftsmanship fascinated and inspired me. My motive was to capture and record this process and skill right from scratch to end- final product. I focused to document through pictures the art of woodcraft and the magnitude of influence the occupation has on the life of the craftsmen. The series includes pictures of raw materials, tools, location, process, craftsmen and final products involved in the Art. The pictures are shot keeping in mind the story, emphasis of the process and impact the photo book will have on the audience.
