When Graupner’s engineers were tasked to design the next generation radio they knew telemetry must be an integral part of the system. They named it HoTT, which stands for Hoping Telemetry Transmission. Graupner HoTT radios and products have been providing users with a streamlined experience where ease of use is guaranteed due to tight integration specifications for the radio’s protocol, as is the case in all of Graupner products. For example, Graupner receivers provide standard telemetry functions such as temperature, voltage and signal strength — all without the need to add expensive components to the system. With over HoTT’s 50 enabled products — airplane, helicopter, car and boat ESCs, motor and engine modules, variometers, and GPS sensors — we provide users with almost unlimited possibilities to connect with their models. Then too, HoTT receivers now provide three-axes flight stabilization and flybarless control, and they do it in one and smart HoTT package.

J
oe Nall, by any measure, is now the premiere model aviation fun fly in the world. It embraces nearly every facet of the hobby, from tiny models to giant-scale fliers. To define the Joe Nall as a “mega” event is almost an understatement, but it is quite literally a “mega” happening for model aviation enthusiasts in the U.S. and abroad — many pilots from around the world make the annual trek to the Triple Tree Aerodrome. This month, RC Sport Flyer magazine is a special edition dedicated entirely to the Joe Nall; the event is just that good! Moreover, the Joe Nall event is blessed by the legacy of Joe Nall the man — the man that was a dear friend to Pat Hartness. This is our way of saying thanks to Pat and Joe for creating such an outstanding event. It’s our way of thanking the organizers that have dedicated so much of their time and resources to making the Joe Nall event what it has evolved into over the years. It’s also our way of tempting you, of course, to attend this special happening in Woodruff, South Carolina for the 2015 event next year. Even dedicating the entire magazine to this event doesn’t really do it justice, precisely because it’s such a huge extravaganza for every aspect of our hobby: model airplanes, model aviation enthusiasts, vendors, and spectators. In reality, it’s impossible to capture the full scope of the action and activities that happen at Joe Nall on the pages of this magazine (or any other, for that matter). Consequently, we’ve added hundreds of photos we couldn’t fit in the magazine to our Tumblr site. You can see them by pointing your browser to rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com. We’ll continue to add photos to the site over the next month too, so you’ll get more and more of
the action by way of the snapshots we have in our queue. Special We discuss this in the articles that accompany our huge photo spreads, but I want to emphasize why Joe Nall is so special in this column as well. The Joe Nall event is special because of the people that make it so. I cannot help but be impressed by their level of benevolence, generosity, and selflessness. Those that have made Joe Nall what it is today are, without question, dedicated to their fellow man/woman! It started with Joe Nall and Pat Hartness, but now it goes well beyond that. Today the organizational structure that makes Joe Nall such a success is absolutely huge, but it works like a finely tuned machine, with each person on the team doing their part to make sure all attendees staying at the Triple Tree Aerodrome have the time of their lives. Truly, I’m struggling for words to describe what I’ve seen in action at Joe Nall. A mega event like this couldn’t feed 1000 people in only 30 minutes without the true and genuine dedication of hundreds of volunteers! Nonetheless, impressive feats like this happen all the time at at Joe Nall. So, from the minute an attendee registers at the gate to the time they leave the Aerodome, the experience is beyond compare. Lesson Every model aviation club in America can learn from what the Joe Nall has become. They can learn that selfless giving has no equal. They can learn that success requires dedication to the project. They can learn that hard work without monetary reward has its own special kind reward. They can learn that there are people that give only for the sake of giving, not getting. Most importantly, we can all learn that people are by nature good, and that charity has a special place in our hearts and minds. I hope this special edition communicates this to you.

JOE NALL 2014 IT’S HUGE! IT’S FUN! IT’S BLESSED!
T
he Joe Nall event, in Greenville, SC, is blessed! It’s blessed by Pat Hartness’ unmeasurable generosity, the fantastic airfield, the organizers, the workers, and most certainly by Joe Nall’s legacy. The Joe Nall is a special event; so many modelers enjoy the camaraderie that is unique to this immense gathering for RC devotees. Consider that 1,484 pilots registered
6
for the 2014 event, and that 10,000 spectators came to watch the proceedings, and you’ll begin to get a sense of the blessing that Joe Nall’s legacy has bestowed on this extravaganza. That is why this magazine is dedicating the entire issue to the 2014 Joe Nall. This special edition of RC-SF is a compilation of photos from three people: the editorin-chief, Robert Vest, and Gary Rosier.

6
Andrew Jesky was doing the demo flights on the JR X-bus equipped Yak. He tells us the engine provides power response very similar to that of a full-scale airplane.
7
This Moki radial is baffled to get the cooling air flowing over the cylinders of the engine. Check out the functional fourblade propeller on this P-47 too.
8
From left to right it’s Tony Russo, Dave Johnson (DA owner) and Andrew Jesky. Andrew says the 250 engine gives the airplane the control feel of a full-scale.

It covers all facets of RC at Joe Nall, including the main (classic) area plus the 3D, electric, float, helicopter, and control line areas (with a few boats too). Joe Nall 2014 was just that outstanding in our minds! JOE NALL — THE MAN Pat Hartness and Joe Nall met while attending Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. They shared an interest in aviation, especially remote-controlled (RC) airplanes. Following his studies at Furman, Joe attended the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC. Realizing his goal of entering the ministry, he and his family settled in Smithfield, NC, where he became Associate Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Upon his rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com

ordination, Joe received his pastorate in Halifax, VA. Always wanting to help his fellow man, Joe later studied at the Wake Forest University of Law. Upon earning his law degree, he returned to Smithfield to establish his law practice. Pat and Joe maintained their friendship throughout the years and continued to share their love of aviation. Joe became an instrument rated pilot and a certified ground school instructor, teaching student pilots at Johnston County Airport near Smithfield while operating Nall Aviation Enterprises. In 1986, with the help of his friend Martin Lancaster, a U.S. Representative from North Carolina, along with U.S. senator Jesse Helms (also of North Carolina) and Pat Hartness, Joe received an appointment by President Ronald Reagan as a board member
of the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, D.C. Joe Nall was on official business for the NTSB in Caracas, Venezuela in 1989, when he was killed in an aircraft accident. The two pilots of the Cessna 402 were trying to land in dense fog at the Charallave municipal airport. Mr. Nall, who was 47 years old, was in Caracas to give a speech to the Venezuelan Aeronautical Congress. Joe served as the master of ceremonies of the Giant Scale Fly-In from 1982 unti his death in 1989 — always using his aviation and modeling experience as well as his sense of humor to entertain the audience gathered at Hartness Field each year. After Joe’s death, Pat honored his good friend’s memory by renaming the event The Joe Nall Fly-In. RC-SF.COM

JOE NALL - THE EVENT The Triple Tree Aerodrome is approximately 18 miles from Greenville, South Carolina in Woodruff, just off highway 221. I flew non-stop on Delta’s 767 aircraft from Seattle to Atlanta — a red-eye flight. The drive to Woodruff from HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport took me about two hours and forty-five minutes, without rush-hour traffic. The drive up Interstate 85 is a beautiful one, by the way. For me, “pragmatic” best describes the Joe Nall event, with a significant measure of fun included! From the minute a pilot or spectator turns onto the Triple Tree Aerodrome’s lane, they learn the Joe Nall event doesn’t just happen. Rather, the Joe Nall is planned and organized down to the last detail by an all-volunteer crew — a staff of RC enthusiasts who are truly dedicated to making the event operate seamlessly. When you first arrive at the Joe Nall registration booth, you rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com
9
are greeted by registrars who are convivial, but focused on the business at hand: getting pilots and spectators to their airfield destinations as quickly as humanly possible. It’s worth noting that the Joe Nall event is not open to the general public. Rather, it is an event organized, planned, designed, and hosted for aviation enthusiasts only, with RC aviation underpinning it all. Because of this, all pilots and
spectators must sign a waiver when registering as a way to protect the club against possible accidents. Additionally, each entrant must be affiliated with aviation in one manner or another — either full-scale and/or model aircraft. Even with this aviationonly restriction, each year the Joe Nall event draws a huge crowd of both pilots and spectators — and I do mean huge! RC-SF.COM

David James’ Spade 7 is expertly detailed! It is 45%-scale. The model uses a DA-150 engine and has Hitec RCD servos. The model weighs 60 lb ready to fly.
7
This Fleet Model 1 biplane was a standout performer. It was detailed very well in March Field colors. I got my first full-scale biplane ride in a Fleet.
8
This clipped-wing Cub is by Bill Hempel Models. It sports a 144-in. wingspan and is powered by a DA-120 engine. The model weighs about 40 pounds RTF.
9
This Sopwith Pup is being flown by Snoopy. We believe it was built from a Balsa USA kit, but is electric powered. The model is designed for 20- to 30-cc gas power.
FLIGHT AREAS Now that I have you in the gate, let me take you on a tour of the airfield. If you attend, you’ll discover there are six — count ‘em — six, flight areas for the pilots. The Joe Nall certainly doesn’t leave any RC pilot out of this RC extravaganza. Helicopters As you enter the Triple Tree Aerodrome, the RC helicopter area is at the very northernmost end of the airfield. This area is for any pilot that wants to fly scale, 3D, or multirotor helicopters. What you’ll see in this area are some pretty eye-popping aircraft in terms of scale machines; there were 63 pilots registered to fly in it! You’ll also see some of the best 3D helicopter pilots in the world. The multirotor machines are flown for fun as well as for capturing videos of the action. My favorites in this area were 8
rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com
7
the stunning scale machines, but the 3D guys really put on a show for the spectators too, and it goes on from dawn till dark. Main (Classic) Flight Line The main or “classic” flight area is by far my favorite area as a spectator because it’s for giant-scale airplanes and jets. At this site, the pilots fly their models pretty much in a racetrack pattern with a bit of 3D action thrown in from time to time. This year, there were 578 pilots registered to fly in the classic area (or what some call “center stage.”) What you’ll see flown in this area is any airplane that fits the International Miniature Aircraft Association’s specifications: 80-in. wingspan monoplanes, 60-in. span biplanes, or any aircraft 1/4-scale or larger. In this area there are six pilot stations, all equipped with emergency alarms for the copilots.

3
Even though this model is not built as a giant-scale airplane, you can see that Rick has done a good deal of detail work on the model to make it impressive in the air.

It is an understatement to say you’ll see the best of the best flown and shown in this flight area. It’s also the area where the noontime demonstration flights are hosted. Pilots from all over the world come in to participate in these demonstrations. For example, this year PowerBox Systems flew in a number of their team pilots from Germany and Italy. They were flying a couple of different jet types, a giant Pitts biplane, and Sebastiano Sivestri was flying his new Avanti S. The gazebo area on the main flight line is where Horizon Hobby’s massive display tent is located too. It’s rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com
7

where everyone has the opportunity to meet Horizon’s team pilots and to learn from their professionals about the latest products in the Horizon line. You’ll also find Desert Aircraft in this area, and they always have at least one new product to show, as was the case with their new 250-cc four-cycle engine. Others in this area include JR America, Great Planes, Hobby King, Falcon Propellers, Sew Busy, PowerBox Systems, etc. This center stage area is just a fun place to be and interact with all the builders, pilots and vendors. Floatplanes If you like floatplanes, the float
line area is where you can pretty much see any type, from miniature to monstrous. This area has five flight stations plus a retrieval boat for those aircraft that don’t make it back to shore as planned. It hosted 81 pilots for the 2014 event. Imagine just how crazy it is to see a 40-percent-scale Cub on floats tooling around the sky like nobody’s business, which was the case with Matt Komro’s Cub. However, you’ll also see smaller models like John Sabini’s Air Machi 72, which is E-flite® electric powered. And, the new E-flite Carbon Z Cub was making waves at the pond for many pilots who enjoy RC-SF.COM

The Fokker DVII is making a pass on the runway during this photo. Check out the excellent detailing on this model; you’d be hard-pressed to know it’s not full scale.
2
This big, beautiful Stearman biplane was turning its propeller with a Moki radial engine. The sound of this model in flight is impressive!
3
This Fokker E.III Eindecker 90 was built from a Balsa USA kit. It is 1/4-scale and flies an 80-in. wingspan. The model is designed for 46- to 60-cc gas power.
4
Carl Gross from Ontario, Canada brought a Bamboo Bomber. The motors are Moki 50s, and it weights 52 lbs. It’s all scratch built, including the electric retracts.
5
Bill Conklin was flying his beautifully detailed, 120-in. wingspan Christen Eagle. It is powered by a four-cylinder 3W 220-cc gas-powered engine.
6
Monty McMillian built this gorgeous Stinson Reliant. It was one of our favorite cabin airplanes at Joe Nall this year, especially with that great paint scheme.
7
Jim Dietrick traveled from Texas to fly his 1/2-scale Space Walker. It was built from plans that Jim drew. It is powered by a Brison 7.4 engine that turns a 28 x 10 prop.
8
Desert Aircraft always has a big booth at Joe Nall, so it’s nice to see this pilot gave them some free advertising by painting the engine size on his model’s cowl.
9
This Hempel 40%-scale clipped-wing Cub has a 144-in. wingspan and is designed for 100- to 120-cc gas-engine power, with this one running a DA-100.
10
This Hangar 9 Beaver is making a steep landing approach, with flaps deployed. The model has a 110-in. wingspan and is powered by a 30-cc gas engine.

the thrill of flying their models off water. The float airplane area is always busy with activity, especially when the sun comes out and pilots are looking for an excuse to get wet. Oh yeah, you’ll also see boats blasting across the water from time to time too, because the Joe Nall is pretty much about fun from sun up to well after dark — boats included! Park Flyers If you’re looking for the park-flyer area, you’ll find it on the left side of the road, just past the float plane area. It is adjoined by the control line circles and a rather large area for parking cars and recreational vehicles. This area is reserved for park-flyer type, electric-powered airplanes. That said, some of the models push
the outside of the envelope when it comes to them fitting into the park-flyer category. Even so, they are electric powered and quiet compared to the gas- and glow-powered aircraft you’ll hear flying elsewhere. Maybe that’s why the event had 355 pilots registered to fly in the park-flyer area. The park-flyer aircraft run the gamut here. You’ll find scale, limitedmotor-run gliders, hotliners, true park flyers, and ducted fans being flown in this area. It is becoming a very popular place for pilots to fly their aircraft, with a relaxed, casual, fun atmosphere for pilots and spectators. Control-Line Circles This year there were 21 pilots that registered to fly in the control-line area. I must say, it was an absolute RC-SF.COM

treat to watch the guys flying their models as I once learned to do. They were also helping others discover the joys of flying control line by giving them a bit of handle time. It put a big grin on my face to see a number of girls and women enjoying the opportunity to fly a model airplane around the circle a few times. 3D Line If you like action that is near nonstop, the 3D flight line is the area for you! This year it had 314 pilots registered. Without question, this is the area to see pilots testing the very limits of their airplanes and their piloting skills. The 3D flight line has a excellent runway area that is adjoined by a small, manmade lake. As a result, you’ll often see airplanes getting their tail feathers wetted, and some of them just flat out take a bath. It is rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com

worth noting the NASCAR driver Greg Biffle flew into the event is his Jet Ranger helicopter, landing just outside the entrance to Triple Tree Aerodrome and then hightailing it to the 3D area to see the action. What I find so fun and exciting about this area of the Joe Nall event is how many young pilots are there participating. They’re just having a blast learning from experts or teaching others how to fly IMAC and 3D type models. The 3D area has what can only be described as a party atmosphere, with music streaming out of the Hitec RCD tent and airplanes lining the pit areas from one end to the other. Not that they don’t at the other areas; it’s just that these pilots in particular have their airplanes blazoned with sponsors’ vinyl, and many of the models are recovered in color schemes unique to its pilot. It’s
pretty safe to say this area has about the same atmosphere you would find at a NASCAR race. In other words, it’s throttle up for these pilots and their colorful aircraft. The sky’s the limit! Vendor Row You will not find a better vendor row than at Joe Nall; it really is the absolute best! I’d say it kicks off with Chief Aircraft’s tent, which sits just to the east of Pat Hartness’ hangar. Chief’s store fills a large circus-type tent, and they need it, since it appears that Chief ships nearly their entire store to the event so shoppers can buy what they need, whenever they need it. However, if you can’t find it in Chief’s on-site store, there are many others to provide just what you need. They include Radical RC, Giant Model Products LLC, Graupner, Hobby King, Balsa USA, WarbirdPilots.com, RC-SF.COM

his passing, his wife sent $500 to have a trophy made, which has been given to the individual at the Joe Nall event each year that built an airplane with the most outstanding presentation. To win, the airplane must also be flown in a scale-like manner. DEPARTURE Whether you are a pilot, spectator, vendor, photographer, or an event reporter, the Joe Nall event is undeniably overwhelming. There is just so, so much information and entertainment to consume. Pilots learn by immersing themselves the flight lines’ actions. Spectators are busied with understanding the flights’ manuevers, the airplanes’ sizes, and power systems. Vendors get a chance to interact face to face with their customers. Photographers will likely get the best RC aviation photos they’ll take all year. Finally, as event reporters we get to witness, photograph, detail, and write about many, many stunning examples of RC model aviation. So it is that this issue is cover-tocover Joe Nall photos, with more on

our Tumblr: rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com. Joe Nall is just that great. We’ll see you there in 2015!
Matt Komro was flying this 40%-scale Piper Cub on floats. The model is powered by DA-100 engine that turns a 28 x 8 propeller. It is fitted with three receivers.
4
Seth Arnold flew the Hangar 9 Inverza during the noontime demo. He joined with another team pilot to put on an awesome formation flight demonstration.
8
Robert Komro’s and Matt Komro’s Cubs were flying circuits of the lake. Both models use custom floats with receivers built into them.
5
Pilots were doing on-field repairs of their airplanes. This one was being done at the 3D flight line area, and the airplane was back in the air shortly thereafter.
9
Robert Komro was flying a huge Hempel Cub. It is powered by a 3W 275 engine that turns a 40 x 8 propeller. The model was fitted with two GoPro cameras.
6
Here you see just how far the 3D flight line area really runs. It’s huge! Besides the gazebo, there are shower houses and an on-site kitchen area.

This is the flybarless Raptor G4 from Thunder Tiger. It’s flying on 720-mm blades that turn at about 2100 rpm, and using a brushless motor and LiPos.
9
John Kirchstein came down from New York to attend. Here he’s enjoying the action at the control-line circles, which I’m sure was his heritage to the hobby.
10
For pilots that had a history in flying control-line models, it was a joy to watch them flown at the Joe Nall, especially because many were vintage designs.

If you’re looking for a new pilot for your next model, you really must point your browser at Warbirdpilots.com. They have many styles, and they are high quality.
7
Bob Schorno was the winner of this year’s Joe Nall Award. I can atest to the fact that Bob was a great person to work with during the event, especially at registration.
11
Rick Cawley passed his 2013 Bob Smith perpetual award trophy on to John Welcome for his creation and flying of a Bud Nosen P-51 Mustang.
Sebart was showing their Tucano and their Air Machi in their tent on vendor row. You can learn more about the entire product line at Aero-model.com.

JOE NALL PHOTO ESSAY YOU JUST WANT TO CAPTURE THE ACTION BY ROBERT VEST
W
hile attending the Joe Nall 2014 event this year, I had the opportunity to meet Wil Byers (editor-in-chief) while shooting photos at the main flight-line area. We got to chatting about the fact that he was dedicating the entire magazine to the Joe Nall 2014. As a result, he asked me to supply some photos for this special edition, which I am happily contributing my content to. Unfortunately, I was focused on shooting photos and not getting captions for all the photos, so we’re doing the best we can to caption all the photos so you understand the action that was happening as they
4
were being taken. Wil and I agree that the important thing is for you to see is the aircraft and the people that make the Joe Nall what it is each year. It’s why this event has turned into a mega happening that died-in-the-wool RC enthusiasts don’t want to miss. Moreover, Joe Nall is truly about the people who attend and how much fun they have interacting with each other. So, it is my pleasure to share my images with you via the pages of this magazine. I hope that you will feel my excitement at being there to witness firsthand all the aicraft that were flown and shown.

IT’S AN AIRPLANE PARTY THAT LASTS A WEEK

Let me tell you, the organizers at Joe Nall Week really throw out the red carpet for aviation enthusiasts.
2
Banners such as this one line the fence from end to end. The event is one that really welcomes enthusiasts!

7
It was time for a little tail dunking with the 3D Hobby Shop Slick 540 — it got wet, but wasn’t dunked deep.

RC SPORT FLYER . AUGUST 2014
’m new to RC airplanes. As a matter of fact, I don’t yet have a model to fly. I simply attended the Joe Nall event to see what it was about and to see the aircraft that would be flown. So, I packed up my camping gear and drove from Florida to Greenville, SC to spend the week. I’m beyond glad that I did, because Joe Nall is a huge extravaganza, with a festive, party atmosphere that lasts throughout the week, even with a few showers trying to spoil the party — NOT! Like Robert Vest, I met Wil at the event. I approached him about sharing some of my photos. He was
more than pleased to get another photographer’s images, probably because they represent a different perspective from those that he was shooting. I was excited to have the opportunity to get my photos in front all the readers of this magazine. Before you peruse my photos, you must know that this event is the Oshkosh of model aviation. However, it is an event where you can get up close and personal with the pilots, the aircraft, and the organizers. The Joe Nall was also a place where I got to make many new friends that I plan to see at many Joe Nall events in years to come.

There were some big, deep down tail dips as the pilots got into challenging one another about how low to go.
7
I really enjoyed seeing the float planes in action at the Aerodrome’s lake. The Cub was a standout!
2
This hovering session did not go so well, especially when the motor tried to breathe water.
8
Kevin Kessler had made a very nice stand for his model’s floats to fit in, which made for easy transport.
3
It was warm enough at Joe Nall that airplane retrievals could be done safely and with a bit of fun thown in.
9
Another Cub makes a nice approach to the beach before the end of the day’s flying session.
4
As you can see, the effectiveness of elevator and rudder starts to be impaired as the model goes deep.
10
Here you can see that this quarterscale model is a nice size, so it’s managable for transport and such.
5
This airplane had plenty of engine power to pull out of some pretty scary tail dunks.
11
I believe this TeleMONSTER was custom built, including the floats with twin rudders.
6
The question was how low can you go and get your airplane out of the lake safely — this far?

Many of the pilots had custom covers for their 3D airplanes. They use them to keep the cover cool and tight. Can you say FULL trailers? This is just one of the many trailers that were packed tight with models. Brandon Chitty is all smiles as he readies his model for some 3D action with a group from Dymond Models. Gnarly is the word for the nose job on this 3D Hobby Shop Slick 540; it looks like it’s chewing the pipes!
9
I like this decal on the Slick 540 too. The 3D pilots seem to have a ton of fun with their airplanes.

NEW ParkZone® Sukhoi SU-29MM Champion pilot and world-class aircraft designer, Mike McConville, created the ParkZone Sukhoi SU-29MM to be a precision instrument for 3D and precision aerobatics. But what sets it above all other performance park flyers is the exclusive SAFE™ (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology that’s been tuned specifically for the needs of the experienced pilot. Besides the two advanced AS3X® flight modes, Panic Recovery and Stagility™ modes can return the Sukhoi to upright flight and prevent a crash. As a result, you’ll be able to fly serious 3D with less risk.
