Studying at the Cieszyn Faculty of Arts is a great idea for young, still seeking musicians and visual artists due to at least two reasons.
Firstly, because of the fact that in Cieszyn – the 1200 years old (as a legend tells) but still young and ambitious town, the town full of many excellent (and currently in use!) concert venues and galleries, the city which is a perfect "model" for artists in any season of the year. Cieszyn is simply a beautiful town. Secondly, because of the fact that at the Faculty of Arts, which guarantees a wide-ranging shaping of the workshop and development of imagination under the control of distinguished staff of artistspedagogues: painters, sculptors, conductors, choir masters, graphic designers (including computer graphic designers), instrumentalists (including jazzmen), photographers, composers and intermedia specialists.
The fact that the academic Faculty of Arts "developed" in Cieszyn is not a matter of accident. Since the earliest generations education (including the sphere of music) has been highly appreciated here, the town was also a seat of a Teacher Training College. This is a tradition. However, contemporary Faculty is a prosperous, open and modern unit, which beside prehistoric (ceramics!) technologies offers also XXI century technologies: computer graphics, computer music. It is – which is natural for the university and artistic communities – a place of sometimes heated discussions about the condition of contemporary art and culture.

Instytut Muzyki w strukturze katowickiej Uczelni zajmuje miejsce znacz¹ce, poszerza bowiem jej edukacyjn¹ ofertê o kszta³cenie artystyczne w zakresie muzyki. Dzisiejszy kszta³t Instytutu Muzyki poprzedzi³o kilka form organizacyjnych. Dzia³alnoœæ rozpoczêto ju¿ w roku 1971, kiedy to Filiê UŒ tworzy³y dwie sekcje, w których zgrupowane by³y cztery zespo³y kierunkowe – jednym z nich by³o Wychowanie Muzyczne. Samodzielny Zak³ad Wychowania Muzycznego powsta³ w roku 1973. U podstaw utworzenia Zak³adu le¿a³a idea edukacji nauczycieli muzyki tak¿e na uniwersytetach, a wiêc w szko³ach wy¿szych nie bêd¹cych Akademiami Muzycznymi. Nastêpnymi etapami zmian organizacyjnych wynikaj¹cych z reform kierunków studiów i programów nauczania by³y: 1977 – Instytut Wychowania Muzycznego i Plastycznego, 1983 – Instytut Wychowania Muzycznego, 1994 – Instytut Pedagogiki Muzycznej, 2000 – Instytut Muzyki.
Institute of Music takes a significant position in the structure of the University of Silesia, as it widens its educational offer with artistic education in the sphere music. Contemporary structure of the Istitute has been predated by a few organizational forms. Its activity was established in 1971, when the Branch of the University of Silesia was formed by two sections. which consisted of four groups of fields of study – one of them was Musical Education. Independent Facility of Musical Education was founded in the year 1973. The starting point of the Facility was the idea of educating teachers of music also at universities, not only at Academies of Music. Following steps of changes in organization deriving from the reforms and syllabuses were: 1977 – Institute of Music and Fine Arts Education, 1983 – Institute of Musical Education, 1994 – Institute of Musical Pedagogy, 2000 – Institute of Music.

CHARAKTERYSTYKA KIERUNKU Program nauczania na kierunku Edukacja artystyczna w zakresie sztuki muzycznej realizowany przez Instytut Muzyki obejmuje wiedzê ogólnomuzyczn¹, specjalistyczne przedmioty teoretyczne i praktyczne oraz przedmioty zwi¹zane z kultur¹, sztuk¹, promocj¹ i marketingiem sztuki, a tak¿e z dzia³aniami interdyscyplinarnymi. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIELD OF STUDY Syllabus on Artistic Education in the field of Musical Art field of study is held by The Instutute of Music and consists of general musical knowledge, specialistic theoretical and practical subjects and subjects connected with culture, art, promotion and marketing of art, as well as interdisciplinary activities. There are also pedagogical and methodical subjects, general subjects common for all humane fields of study and specialistic subjects held within a chosen specialization included in the syllabus that give the graduate full pedagogical qualification. The Institute is a co-organizer of courses and musical workshops: piano, vocal, choir, dance, progressive movement, which are held under the rule of outstanding specialists and musical authorities, as well as an organizer of numerous concerts with the participations of pedagogues, students and special guests. Cooperation with The Institute of Art (Fine Arts) has a significant effect on the quality and form of education letting the students feel artistic activities in a wider perspective and know how to rate and plan them. This is one of the elements that distinguishes our Institute among various artistic unversities. Every student has an ability to take part in organizational, scientific and cultural activities of the Institue and Faculty by participating in Students Goverment, Students' scientific clubs (Scientific-artistic Club ICTUS (of contemporary music), JAZZ ZONE Artictis-Scentific Club, Conductors Scientific Club) and to work for the periodically organized festivals (Cieszy単ska Wiosna Muzyczna, Cieszynalia).

PERSPEKTYWY ZAWODOWE Absolwent studiów I stopnia otrzymuje tytu³ licencjata i uzyskuje kwalifikacje muzyka i nauczyciela w zakresie edukacji i animacji muzycznej, a tak¿e – dodatkowo – kwalifikacje w zakresie realizowanej specjalizacji. Otrzymuje tak¿e pe³ne kwalifikacje pedagogiczne. Mo¿e uczyæ muzyki na wszystkich poziomach szkolnictwa ogólnokszta³c¹cego, prowadziæ dzia³alnoœæ muzyczn¹ w zakresie muzyki kameralnej, liturgicznej i rozrywkowej, podejmowaæ pracê w instytucjach organizuj¹cych imprezy muzyczne i zajmuj¹cych siê animacj¹ muzyczn¹ oraz w placówkach specjalistycznych realizuj¹cych zajêcia z zakresu terapii muzycznej. The graduate of the second level studies gets an M.A. title and gains qualifications of an artistmusician and a teacher of education and musical animation, as well as – additionally – qualifications in the chosen specialization. The graduate gets full pedagogical qualifications and can teach music on every level of comprehensive education, can hold musical activity in the spheres of chamber, liturgical and entertainment music, can work for institutions that organize musical celebrations or musical animation, as well as in specialized institutions that hold activities in the field of musical therapy.

Instytut Sztuki. W 1973 roku, w ówczesnej Filii Uniwersytetu Œl¹skiego w Cieszynie, zosta³ utworzony kierunek studiów Wychowanie Plastyczne. Od pocz¹tku dzia³alnoœci przechodzi³ wiele zmian programowych i strukturalnych m.in. jako Instytut Wychowania Plastycznego, jako Instytut Kszta³cenia Plastycznego, by – od 1997 roku do chwili obecnej – pozostaæ Instytutem Sztuki w ramach Wydzia³u Artystycznego, który kszta³ci na dwóch kierunkach studiów: Grafika i Edukacja Artystyczna w zakresie Sztuk Plastycznych. Kszta³cenie odbywa siê w ramach Katedr: Grafiki, Interdyscyplinarnej Kreacji Artystycznej, Projektowania Graficznego, Malarstwa, RzeŸby, Teorii Sztuki i Dydaktyki Artystycznej. Instytut Sztuki posiada bardzo dobrze wyposa¿one pracownie artystyczne i laboratoria, sale wyk³adowe i multimedialne. Wraz z Instytutem Muzyki, Instytutem Pedagogiki i Instytutem Etnologii tworzy wspólny kampus uniwersytecki w Cieszynie.
The Institute of Art. In the year 1973, the Fine Arts Education field of study was founded at a former Branch of Silesian University in Cieszyn. It has gone through many structural and syllabus changes for 37 years, for example it was the Institute of Fine Arts Education between 1983 and 1997, and since then it has been the Institute of Art in The Faculty of Art, which teaches in two fields: Graphics and Artistic Education in Fine Arts. Education takes place in Chairs of: Graphic, Interdisciplinary Artistic Creation, Graphic Design, Painting, Sculpture, Theory of Art and Artistic Didactics. The institute of Art has well equipped facilities for artistic workshops,
multimedia studios, laboratories and lecture halls. It is a part of the university campus in Cieszyn together with the Institute of Music, the Institute of Pedagogy and the Institute of Ethnology.

The Instutute of Art has the licence to confer doctorate and habilitation in art, its staff consists of creatively active pedagogues who have achieved artistic and scientific recognition both in Poland and abroad. The Inst. The institute stays in touch with many artistic universities in Poland and abroad – in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, France, Great Britain, Portugal, with artistic institutions and galleries. There is also a students exchange based on Sokrates/Erasmus and Bridge educational programmes. There are three galleries (The University Gallery, The Gallery 36,6 and The Cage Gallery) at the Institite of Art, which present exhibitions of individual artists, students, exhibitions focused on specific problems and themes and organize meetings with teenagers. In the academic year 2011/2012 the Institute of Art will introduce doctoral studies (of the third level) in the field of fine arts.

Kierunek ten charakteryzuje siê mo¿liwoœciami poznawania szerokiego zakresu problemów zwi¹zanych ze sztuk¹ oraz dzia³aniami interdyscyplinarnymi polegaj¹cymi na ³¹czeniu dyscyplin i zagadnieñ. Praca dyplomowa obejmuje pracê artystyczn¹ zrealizowan¹ w ramach wybranej specjalnoœci oraz pisemn¹ pracê licencjack¹ lub magistersk¹.
Education on first and second level at the ARTISTIC EDUCATION IN FINE ARTS field of study contains getting to know different aspects of art and subjects from theory and history of art. The field of study characterises itself with possibilities to get to know a wide variety of problems connected with art and interdiisciplinary actions that mean connection of disciplines and subjects. The Diploma consists of artistic work in a chosen field and of writing B. A. Thesis or M. A. Thesis.

Zdobyte podczas studiów umiejêtnoœci i kwalifikacje umo¿liwiaj¹: prowadzenie twórczej pracy zawodowej w zakresie sztuk plastycznych oraz korzystanie z najnowszych osi¹gniêæ sztuki i zdobyczy technologicznych; upowszechnianie sztuki i kultury w oœrodkach specjalistycznych, edukacyjnych i w oœrodkach masowego przekazu; podejmowanie przedsiêwziêæ multimedialnych oraz ró¿norodnych form plastyki w kontekœcie funkcji kulturotwórczych, edukacyjnych i poznawczych w instytucjach kultury. W ramach kierunku realizowany jest blok przedmiotów pedagogicznych, daj¹cy uprawnienia do pracy w szko³ach podstawowych, gimnazjalnych i œrednich, prowadz¹cych plastykê, wiedzê o kulturze i sztuce.
OCCUPATIONAL PERSPECTIVES The graduate of first and second level studies (field – the painting creation of a picture, sculpture, shaping of space, commercial design, graphic arts, multimedia, photography and drawing) gains qualifications that let him or her take different cultural and educational actions in the field of fine arts creation, popularization of art and artistic culture. He or she has abilities to deal with artistic practice and knowledge from different subjects of art and theory of art. M.A. Thesis and finally becoming an M.A. Degree holder (after 3 B.A. plus 2 M.A. or 5 M.A. year long course). Abilities and knowledge that are gained during studies let the graduate: run creative work in fine arts and take advatage of the latest achievements of art and technology; popularize art and culture in specialistic centres, educational and ones belonging to mass media; take multimedial actions and different forms od fine arts in the context of cultural and creational function in cultural institutions. Within the field of study thare is a number of pedagogical subjects that give a licence to work in primary schools, secondary schools and highschools in which Fine Arts subject or Knowledge about Culture subject is held.

Studia na kierunku GRAFIKA (I i II stopnia oraz jednolite magisterskie) obejmuj¹ kszta³cenie w zakresie szeroko pojêtego projektowania graficznego oraz grafiki artystycznej. Ich ukoñczenie gwarantuje pe³ne wykszta³cenie artysty grafika zdolnego do podejmowania dzia³alnoœci twórczej w dziedzinie grafiki projektowej obejmuj¹cej projektowanie form reklamowych, plakatów, bilbordów, kompleksow¹ realizacjê informacji i identyfikacji wizualnej a tak¿e grafiki wystawienniczej i grafiki mediów elektronicznych. Program kszta³cenia umo¿liwia jednoczeœnie zdobycie klasycznych umiejêtnoœci graficznych w ramach grafiki warsztatowej obejmuj¹cej akwafortê, akwatintê, mezzotintê, miedzioryt, litografiê, sitodruk, grafikê cyfrow¹ i techniki eksperymentalne. Studia pozwalaj¹ na zdobycie gruntownej wiedzy z zakresu sztuk piêknych popartej praktyk¹ artystyczn¹ uzyskan¹ w pracowniach: malarstwa, rzeŸby, rysunku, fotografii, ceramiki, multimedialnych i interdyscyplinarnych dzia³añ artystycznych, uzupe³nione wiedz¹ z historii i teorii sztuki oraz wiedz¹ o grafice wspó³czesnej, marketingu i prawie autorskim. Tak skonstruowany program gwarantuje profesjonalne przygotowanie absolwenta studiów do podejmowania ró¿norodnych dzia³añ artystycznych i projektowych na rynku sztuki.

GRAPHICS field of study (lasting 3 B.A. plus 2 M.A. or 5 M.A. years) consists of education in widely understod areas of graphic design and artistic graphics. Graduation guarantees full education of a graphic artist, able to take creative actions in the subject of design graphic which involves designing advertising forms, plackards, billboards, instant realization of information and visual identification and also exhibitional graphics and graphics of electronical media. The programme of education allows to gain classic graphic abilities within workshop graphic that consists of etching, aquatinta, mezzotinta, copperplate, litography, screen printing, digital graphic and experimental techniques. Studies let gaining thorough knowledge of Fine Arts that are proved by artistic practice gained in workshops like: painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, ceramics, multimedial one and interdisciplinary, artistic actions, they are filled with knowledge from history and theory of art and know much about contemporary graphics, marketing and copyrights. That kind of programme guarantees professional preparation of the graduate to undertake different artistic actions and designing on artistic market.

PERSPEKTYWY ZAWODOWE Studia daj¹ absolwentowi kwalifikacje grafika w takim samym zakresie, jak studia na Wydzia³ach Grafiki Akademii Sztuk Piêknych i przygotowuj¹ do dzia³alnoœci artystycznej w ró¿nych obszarach grafiki warsztatowej i projektowej z uwzglêdnieniem komunikacji medialnej. Gruntowne przygotowanie ogólnoplastyczne, profesjonalna znajomoœæ technik i technologii grafiki warsztatowej, oprogramowania i technologii cyfrowych oraz przygotowanie humanistyczne z zakresu historii sztuki, estetyki, wiedzy o kulturze i filozofii, wiedzy o mediach, reklamie i marketingu przygotowuj¹ absolwenta studiów do dzia³alnoœci na rynku sztuki. Umo¿liwiaj¹ podejmowanie aktywnoœci zawodowej w wydawnictwach, agencjach graficznych, reklamowych, instytucjach wystawienniczych, mass-mediach, telewizji, galeriach sztuki oraz instytucjach kulturalno-oœwiatowych. Przygotowuj¹ do realizacji ró¿norodnych i profesjonalnych zadañ w dziedzinie szeroko rozumianej dzia³alnoœci plastycznej. Absolwent studiów II stopnia oraz studiów jednolitych magisterskich uzyskuje tytu³ magistra sztuki w specjalnoœciach: grafiki artystycznej i projektowania graficznego.
OCCUPATIONAL PERSPECTIVES The studies give the graduate the same qualifications as studies at the Graphics field of study at the Academy of The Fine Arts and prepare for artistic work in different aspects of workshop and design graphic together with media communication. Thorough preparation in fine arts, professional knowledge of technique and technology of workshop graphics, software and digital technology, knowledge of media, advertising and marketing prepare the graduate for activity on artistic market. They allow to work for publishers, advertising and graphic agencies, exhibitional institutions, mass media, television, art galleries and cultural and educational institutions. They prepare for the realization of various, professional tasks in the field on artistic activity. The graduate becomes an M.A. Degree Holder in Fine Arts specializing in graphic arts and graphic design.
