STRENGTHS Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters, 2013-2014 was a great year for KIPP Delta Public Schools. Even while increasing our enrollment to the highest it has ever been, we continued to provide a high-quality education for the children who need us most, significantly increased our student and parent satisfaction rates, kept more of our teachers, and met our financial targets. This past school year we had some great successes. The Class of 2014 accumulated $2.4 million in scholarships—over $1 million more than any previous graduating class. We broke ground on our elementary wing and playground expansion, a project that represents the culmination of a $1.2 million capital campaign. KIPP Delta Collegiate High School was named the #2 high school in Arkansas by U.S. News and World Report—our fourth consecutive year in the top five. Our parents, students, staff, and supporters have all proven we have many strengths to build upon as we enter our thirteenth year. Throughout this report, you will see key statistics and stories relating to KIPP’s Six Essential Questions. These questions provide a yardstick by which to measure our progress, keep us focused as we grow, and guide us to help our students’ futures shine brighter. While we have much to be proud of from the last year, we also know there are areas for growth. Ultimately, our goal is to create a paradigm shift In the Delta by establishing centers of academic excellence that will compete with the top educational programs in the country. To do this, we must focus on increasing academic rigor, improving student retention, and prioritizing our talent recruitment and development. As we grow to serve more children, we will have to leverage all of our strengths, particularly the strengths of our staff, students, parents, and supporters. We are strongest together. AT A GLANCE KIPP DELTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS is a growing network of KIPP charter schools offering a free, college-preparatory education to children in the Arkansas Delta. In the 2013-2014 school year, we served nearly 1,200 students across four schools in HelenaWest Helena and Blytheville. In the 2014-2015 school year, we will serve nearly 1,400 students across five schools. OUR VISION is to create a paradigm shift in the Delta by establishing centers of academic excellence that will compete with the top educational programs in the country. This will not only encourage current residents to stay and pursue academic excellence in their own community, but also entice newcomers to seek academic opportunity in the heart of the Delta. THE MISSION of KIPP Delta Public Schools is to create and support schools that empower students from underserved communities to develop the knowledge, skills, and character traits necessary to pursue a college education and a life of value, joy, and integrity.

KIPP DELTA FIVE YEAR GOALS Goals are specific aims that set the fundamental long-range direction for our schools. They make it absolutely clear where we will concentrate resources. Each goal addresses challenges and areas of growth for our schools, areas where we must build upon our strengths to achieve desired results and further our mission. THE KIPP FRAMEWORK Each KIPP region, including KIPP Delta, is guided by two key frameworks: KIPP’s Five Pillars and the Six Essential Questions. Together, these frameworks provide guidance for our work and help us measure our progress, success, and sustainability.

Our schools create a culture of achievement and support that makes no excuses based on a student’s background or prior academic performance.
Parents, teachers, students, and administrators all choose to be a part of the KIPP program and commit to doing whatever it takes to help students succeed.
Our extended school day and year provides roughly 40 percent more time for learning the core subjects, as well as for extracurricular programs.
Our leaders are inspirational educators who have control over their school budgets and personnel, allowing them maximum effectiveness in helping students learn.
We are constantly monitoring student achievement on standardized tests and other metrics to ensure that our students are prepared for high school, college, and life.
THE SIX ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
Before we can build upon our strengths to meet our five year goals, we must first know how we are doing. To help measure this, we ask ourselves a few questions, known as the Six Essential Questions. Our Six Essential Questions provide a yardstick by which to measure our progress, keep us focused as we grow, and guide us in helping our students’ futures shine brighter. RAISING THE BAR We are determined to find out what’s working and not working for our students and families. We use data to help measure much of this. By looking at our data, we can understand our strengths and leverage them to meet our challenges head-on. While we outperformed the state in 48% of tested areas in the 2013-2014 school year, we must continue to raise the bar and prioritize academic rigor across our schools. Through collaboration, common assessments, and implementation of Common Core curriculum, we will push students to do rigorous work in all classes on a daily basis to prepare them academically for the road to and through college.

KIPP BEYOND THE CLASSROOM KIPP has been my life for the last seven years. As a senior, I know that KIPP is more than academics. KIPP requires a committed pledge to personal success—inside and outside of the classroom. If a student takes advantage of the full “KIPP experience,” he or she will— as I have—inevitably undergo a full character change. Most people don’t realize that beyond being honor roll students, KIPP students are also ball players, steppers, majorettes, and dancers. The values of working hard and committing to excellence go further than being honor roll students. These same KIPP mantras apply to my long, after-school practices for dance recitals and to emergency step practices for a Friday basketball halftime show.
I took dance classes when I was young. I picked dance up again in my sophomore year when the highly-anticipated class was first offered. I excelled quickly because of the work ethic I had already established through many years at KIPP. The following year, my teacher enrolled me in the advanced dance class. Here, I faced so many more challenges because this was a more structured type of dance, but I am as dedicated to becoming an excellent dancer as I am to becoming an excellent student. KIPP has instilled in me an unwavering work ethic, the desire to be great, and the common sense to apply that work ethic and desire to all areas of my life. SUMMER FARRIS

KIPP is more than a school. It is a safe haven, a home, a solution to problems, and a journey. I joined KIPP in 2002, as part of the original class. As fifth graders, we had no idea what college was or how to get there. We definitely weren’t thinking about how our lives were going to change seven years later. Then, Scott Shirey, along with other founding teachers, explained the importance of “Climbing the Mountain to College”. This is where my KIPP Delta journey began. Throughout middle school, we talked every day about what colleges we were interested in and what we wanted to become in life. We took trips to various colleges and expanded our worlds. In high school, our journey up the mountain continued until we were accepted into college. This was not an easy task, but KIPP Delta is a place where the unthinkable is thinkable. Our teachers and leaders went “beyond Z” to empower each of their students, even after graduation. By the time I went to college, the KIPP Foundation had created the KIPP Through College (KTC) Program. They not only wanted to get students to college, but through college. Through KTC, I had advisors I could talk to about college and get assistance, when needed, throughout my journey. In 2013, I was given the chance to become a KIPP college ambassador. I was ecstatic to receive this opportunity. My goal was to help other KIPPsters on my campus, but in actuality the program helped me as well. It helped me academically, socially, and financially. The ambassador program pushed me to
be better academically and socially to be a walking role model for the KIPPsters I was assigned to assist. Financially, this program gave me money for essentials, which helped make college more affordable for my family. I knew going to and through college would be a very rigorous journey, but I used my strengths of organization and social intelligence to help me along the way. I have always loved working with others and assisting them in reaching their goals. I was able to put these strengths into action as I helped other students get organized for class and helped others with their social life. With these strengths, my cohort and I were able to take control of our academic and personal lives. In May 2014, KIPP helped me celebrate one of the most rewarding days of my life. I graduated from college and, like every other major milestone in the past twelve years, KIPP was there. After graduation I realized that KIPP had done so much for me that it was my obligation to be another beacon of light for students in my community. So I decided I would return to KIPP Delta and teach chemistry. The road is tough, but I hope that as a former KIPPster, and now a teacher, I can make the road just a little easier. Mr. Shirey would always tell us to pull the next one up. For me, the KIPP journey can’t end until I pull the next one up! KYESHIA WARD

BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW
In the fall of 2013, KIPP Delta launched the Building a Better Tomorrow Capital Campaign to build a new kindergarten wing and playground at KIPP Delta Elementary Literacy Academy in Helena. With a $1.2 million goal, we asked our supporters to help make this dream a reality—and hundreds of you stepped up! Within eight months, the campaign goal was met and construction was underway. Our youngest KIPPsters will soon have a permanent home, as well as an engaging playground for imaginative learning. While building and maintaining high-quality facilities is essential to our mission, KIPP Delta receives zero dollars from the state or federal government for this purpose. This lack of facilities funding creates a disparity that is difficult to overcome. KIPP Delta, on average over the past four years, has received $2,064 less per pupil than the local traditional public school districts. The Building a Better Tomorrow Campaign heped close this gap in 2013-2014, and we could not be more grateful to the many individuals, organizations, foundations, and corporations, including many of our big and little KIPPsters, who made this possible. This campaign will allow KIPP Delta to put $1.2 million into revitalizing downtown Helena, where we have already invested over $7 million in the past twelve years. In the years to come, as we grow the number of students and communities we serve, we will continue to strive to infuse new life into the communities we serve.
