PUBLISHER’S NOTE

As I sit and reflect about the many blessings in my life, I can’t help but to realize that what is on the top of this list are not “things”. Obviously I run a magazine that focuses on the finer “things” in life…cars, vacation spots, beautiful homes, top restaurants…but I am realizing more and more that if you don’t have people that you love to share it all with, it is pointless. Don’t get me wrong. Nothing excites me more than the sight of life’s finer things, but if I don’t have someone that I truly care about to experience it with, my joy is only a fraction of what it could be. In the midst of all the craziness that comes with creating a magazine I am still making it my priority to focus on those who mean the most to me. After all, if I don’t have my family and friends in my life, does anything else really matter? Wishing you all of the beautiful experiences life has to offer…

Many mountain trips are made around the fall time and into the winter. We, here at Clutch, believe one of the best vehicles you can take to accommodate all mountainous conditions is a sports utility vehicle. And that is exactly what we did. As some of our staff went to visit the top mountain destinations, we made our journey in a brand new, loaded 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Edition. However, we did not stop pushing different SUVs to the limit to review what each had, and why it should be listed as one of the best. Cadillac SRX4 Article & photos by Jenny Boyer

In the Cadillac SRX’s second generation, much improvement has been made. From everything I’ve seen and heard, General Motors really listened to consumer feedback to give the SRX abundant improvements. For starters, this vehicle is Cadillac’s top seller. It offers the ride of a not so big SUV, with many of the features and luxuries of one. MSRP begins at $35,185, which is outrageously low for a Cadillac of any kind, with the top model maxing out right under $50,000. You will find that the SRX has the most powerful engine, now standard on all models, than any other comparable automobile. With most cars, and even with the SRX in the past, you pay for higher performance. Well, not now. Not with this 1 0 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

Cady. The V-6 3.6L engine boasts 308hp and 265 lb. ft. of torque. The capability is there to drive in sports mode, using manual shift as an option without having to use a clutch. The EPA estimates 17/24mpg , including a need to no longer have to use premium gas. Good job GM. Some great changes made indeed. Many features of this car honestly blew me away. Cadillac undoubtedly lives up to its name with the SRX. Here are a few reasons why….. The panoramic sunroof is mind blowing being it opens up about 70% of the roof, also having a power sunshade that will block out rays that could come in and make it hard to see or create a glare. Wood and chrome accents are beautiful in the interior with inside lighted trim. You might be wondering what

that is. I did too, until I drove the SRX and saw it myself. Around the interior of the car, the trim is lit up with little white lights. Not a necessity, but a nice luxury, thus Cadillac living up to its name once again. A 10 speaker Bose system fills the car with the only noise you will hear while driving; it is an extremely quiet ride. The SRX entails a 40 gb hard drive which holds around 2,000 songs. Listen to this one: It has a double deck glove box which cools if wanted and can hold a 2 liter bottle! Crazy, but cool if you’re headed to a party with a bottle of wine, right? One of my favorite features is the Pause and Play Radio. While listening to satellite radio, a rider may pause live radio , record up to 20 minutes, and play back later. This feature even works while the car is turned off. So, when you need to stop for any reason, picking up take out or refueling, record whatever you were listening to and pick it up later! Luxury galore! When I first got the SRX to test drive for a couple days, I was wondering why and surprised by the fact the navigation screen wasn’t any larger than it was for a Cadillac; that is, until it glided up to a full screen. The Driver Information Center on this screen displays key data in 3D color. NavTraffic is also available to update you on the newest traffic accidents, backups, construction setbacks, and roadblocks. Voice recognition exists as a safety feature to prompt the car with a command versus playing with controls, knobs, or a touchscreen. A tri-zone climate control is most comfortable for all riders in the front and rear of the vehicle. I love this feature since I am normally hot natured while everyone else is cool. As far as cargo room, there is 60 cubic feet available after folding down the rear seat. Always needed for a big grocery trip or Santa shopping! The Cadillac SRX was one of my personal favorites. If I could fit all my children in this vehicle, it would be on my wishlist for sure. (And I have four kids, so many of you with fewer children would be extremely comfortable, for the record.) You cannot beat the performance , luxury, and most of all value you will receive when purchasing an SRX.

Acadia Denali

By Jenny Boyer / Photos by Justin Engel

The 2012 Acadia Denali was our executive director’s favorite SUV. On the way back from an engagement our staff had, he was quite reluctant to even let me drive the 30ish minutes back to the office. Once I drove it, I understood why. The Acadia is a mid-priced SUV that delivers much higher priced performance. The acceleration and power felt was much more than expected, and higher than other expensive competitors. A few things other than power made our ride maximally enjoyable: the dual -panel sunroof with panoramic view, the Bose surround sound stereo system, the heated seats, Sirius satellite radio, acoustic noise suppression for a nice, quiet ride, and spacious room in the third row for our staff member who is 5’10. GMC surpasses other SUVs that seat eight passengers with its estimated 17/24 mpg. MSRP begins at $43,880 with 4WD or AWD available. Chrome wheels, a rearview camera, and the hands-free communication system are a few perks not all other comparable models include. The Universal Home Remote is a nice feature made to program your garage door for usage, not ever needing another opener or worrying about batteries. Also available is a 150-watt/120-volt AC household current grounded power outlet in the rear entertainment package; you can plug in video game equipment, portable electronics, or anything else you would use an outlet in your home for. Impressive dynamics on the Acadia, as well as many new SUVs, are noteworthy, especially if it’s been a little while since you test drove or bought a newer vehicle. Ever had a friend or spouse drive your car somewhere? You get back in the car and have to fix the seat back to where you had it, as well as the mirrors and the radio? Now there are memory controls in the car; usually two, sometimes three. It’s as easy as getting in the automobile, pushing the number memory you want and everything automatically adjusting exactly where you had it and need it. Or how about the ability, when you turn on a radio station, to rewind the song that’s playing to the beginning and not miss any of it? Crazy, huh? What’s next…. Flying saucer automobiles like on the Jetsons?! Huge strides are being made, as you can see, in this age of technology. It’s almost impossible to keep up sometimes. SUVs sure have come a long way. After researching online, I found almost nothing but good reviews from consumers for this car. And after our experience with it, I undoubtedly agree. To be able to have a smooth, quiet, comfortable, and powerful ride in a vehicle made for eight was something that simply used to not be. Until now. You certainly have a valuable buy in the Acadia without sacrificing the luxury a car costing much more could give. The GMC Acadia Denali is a great find for sure.

2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Starting MSRP $48,990-$50,490 MPG City: 17-20 Highway: 22-27 Available Engines 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 (premium) 240-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 (diesel) Transmissions 7-speed automatic w/OD and auto-manual

The Mercedes Benz M class is redesigned this year in its third generation. Many things have changed; the most in my opinion is the safety features this car contains. It truly is amazing. Other cars may have some of the same, but not all combined, and not to the degree Mercedes M class does. ‘Attention Assist’ is an element that can save your life. Everyone at some point gets weary on the road. Statistics have shown an overly tired driver can be just as dangerous on the road as an intoxicated one. Attention Assist can detect any substantial change in your driving and alert you by vibrating the steering wheel. This happens by an “onboard camera photographs your lane position 15 times a second and helps with unintended lane drift”. (www.mbusa.com) Mercedes listened to their customers and improved the M class based on consumer feedback. This newer model ups its horsepower from 268 to 302 for a more powerful drive. The wider rear makes way for a more spacious second row of reclining seats. Thankfully, the cruise control was relocated to a lower, more standard position. The turning radius on the M class is phenomenal, making SUV U-turns extremely easy. Mercedes’ Pre-Safe Break System gives the 2012 model 40% more breaking power; always a good thing. The M class is ready to be taken on any destination or sports game with its increased 7,200 pound towing capacity and a DC power outlet in the trunk of the vehicle to connect to for tailgating. Agility control on the Mercedes adjusts automatically for the road surfaces you may be driving on, whether dirt, gravel, or grass. Blind spot sensors and heated/cooled drink holders will be added in January to the model. Overall, great car. I thoroughly enjoyed the smooth ride the Mercedes gave. Lifetime roadside assistance and at home services, such as oil changes and tire rotations, are impressive accommodations offered. A luxury car it is, starting at $48,000. Well worth the investment if feasible.

Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Article & photos by Jenny Boyer 1 6 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

I am probably the last person you would expect to be test driving and reviewing cars. I am a single mom of four kids, who, while always enjoying and being interested in cars, never was taught through adolescence-as many young boys are--just what all goes into the magnificence of cars. I never could truly appreciate a car for all those things you hear about; turbo, V-8 engine, 400 horsepower, dual exhaust… That is until I drove the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. I walked away from that car completely blown away at every aspect of it. Let’s be honest for a minute. When an average female is looking to buy a new vehicle, there are a few things she may look at: the body and color of the car for one, the size and gas mileage maybe, and definitely the features. She may not be able to afford everything she wants, but it is all taken into account. After I test drove the car, I got back into my Sequoia to go to my next stop. And I immediately got on my phone to text my brother and a few others about how awesome this Porsche was. Not for all the features, even though they were pretty great. It was the power and brilliance of the overall design and layout. I truly had respect for a car like I had never had before. Overpriced? Sure, I thought it….. before my drive, that is. It is easy to see why one would pay for the Cayenne after having the experience with it. I am

perfectly aware not everyone can afford this car. However, if it could be an option for you or in your market, this is one vehicle you must go try out. Let me tell you why…. I was completely naïve and never would’ve attempted to know or guess how much thought was put into this vehicle when designing it. Granted, every vehicle’s designers are, sure. Not like this one. Porsche has truly gone above and beyond. In all of the SUVs I have test driven and reviewed the past month, not one held the power of the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. When testing vehicles out, I always put my foot to the floor to see how fast it accelerates. This car did not have even a one second delay before the transmission shifted as all the others had. It just went. And fast. 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds. Who can’t love that? Besides for the obvious supercharged engine, everyone at some point has turned out in traffic needing to accelerate quickly. If you don’t, it may take another ten minutes to make your turn if you’re in rush hour, especially in Charlotte. The amount of power is due, in large, to the electric motor, that when combined with the gasoline engine increases the total power output. And for any of you daring to test the limits, the Cayenne S Hybrid will top out at 150mph, with the eightspeed Tiptronic S using the two upper gears for lower RPMs. Just remember to buckle up. As well as producing incomparable speed performance, the hybrid motor also shows maximum functioning with something as simple as cruising through a neighborhood. When driving with moderate acceleration, or while sitting at a stop light, the electric motor powers the car independently, not using any gas. Money is saved indeed, due to not burning gas while sitting in stop and go traffic, which many of us do five days a week. It is so quiet; you may not even be able to tell it is running. I learned that when I pushed

the start engine button to turn the car on for the first time. Going to start the car “for a second time”, a nice gentleman pointed out it was already started. Shows how much I knew about hybrid cars! Vehicle noise is something you may not think about every day, especially if you do not drive a huge, diesel truck. I know I didn’t. However it is unwelcome, and if you have the option, so very nice when you finally are not exposed to it. Safety is a huge factor that all companies are taking into account more than ever when designing new automobiles, and the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid delivers. I am in love with safety features on vehicles today that I never knew existed, as I personally drive a 2002 model SUV. One that stands out on the Cayenne is the set of five round gauges in the dashboard, directly above the steering wheel, and what they display. Just about every new SUV has a navigation screen in the center of the dash, with menus used for GPS, satellite radio, hands free calling, weather updates, traffic, and more. The majority of these menus are used by touchscreen, which requires one taking their eyes off the road to use or read. However, Porsche is one step ahead. The center of the five gauge dashboard allows you to read your next turn, look at map data, or select radio stations without having to look a different direction other than the road in front of you. Many SUVs display some but not all of what I saw when encountering the Porsche. The entire menu board consists of only five screens with turn knob controlling options; basically, very user friendly and safe to use. Everything--from the blind spot sensors to the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system and their Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system to the rear facing camera that helps you back in a spot or see if a toddler has ducked behind your car when in reverse-impressively promotes safety. Have we all driven without these features for years? Of course. Would driving be easier and safer if you owned a Cayenne? Undoubtedly, which is why the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid is my personal favorite. Go to your local dealer and drive one. You just might gain that knowledge and respect of what Porsche is all about.

2012 Dodge Durango Citadel V-8 By Jenny Boyer Photos by Justin Engel

1 8 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

The Dodge Durango is back once again for its 13th year. There are really only two new things about this year’s Durango: the option for a six-speed automatic transmission accompanied by a V-8 engine, and captain’s chairs available for the middle row. However, the Durango is still a great vehicle. As I drove this car, I did notice a slight delay in acceleration. Definitely not bad by any means. In fact, you probably wouldn’t even notice if you hadn’t just driven a dozen new SUVs. It is a beautiful car externally and internally. Plenty of room inside the cabin to seat seven comfortably. As all the other new SUVs, the Durango has satellite radio, navigation, and a rear entertainment package, as well as a Parkview rear backup camera. What is that? Something brilliant, I believe. It is a camera attached to the back of the vehicle; when you put the car in reverse, the camera turns on to show you what’s behind you. That could mean a person, or how much room you have to back out before hitting a curb. Very nice safety feature when driving a vehicle this large. One particular feature I liked on the Durango is that you can check to see what speeds have been driven previously. Have a teenager or a spouse with a lead foot? Easy… you can just look to see on the car how fast it has just been driven. The mileage isn’t too bad; it runs around 16/22 mpg. It takes regular unleaded, which is a plus considering many new SUVs require plus or premium gas. And not everyone can afford that these days. The Durango is a good value, starting at $42.995. It has most of the features the other SUVs have, so if you don’t care about a second faster acceleration or driving it in “sports mode” or heated/chilled drink holders, this might be a great vehicle for you. With its masculine look and feel and opted Hemi engine, no man would mind driving kids around in this car. In fact, he just might run to the grocery store or take the kids to soccer practice if he can drive the Durango. Who can argue with that?!

CHEVROLET Equinox

By Jenny Boyer

The Equinox was the last SUV that I drove and reviewed. It was definitely not a disappointment. In my opinion, this vehicle is one of the best values for the money. MSRP begins at $23,450 with four available options of the Equinox to purchase, the LS 1LS, LT 1LT, LT 2LT, and the LTZ 1LZ. The Onstar Navigation and Assistance Service is unique to the Equinox versus other SUVs. Onstar contains numerous features that help promote safety and help in almost any crisis. There is roadside assistance, emergency services, crash response, hands free calling, vehicle diagnostics, and much more with Onstar. It is one of those things you might say you don’t need; however, once you do have it, you never want to go without it again. Other safety features of the Equinox include Rear Parking Assist, Blind Spot Mirrors, Brake Assist, StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System, a Vehicle Anti-Theft System, Fog Lamps, Daytime Running Lights, and of course driver and passenger airbags. Mileage is great on the Equinox with 22mpg in city and 32mpg on highway. That is exceptionally high for an SUV. I certainly liked the navigation screen on this vehicle. It was colorful and very user friendly. Being a huge music lover, I was fond of the layout of all the music stations, all categorically lined up and named. I noticed some of the other SUVs driven did not offer all of this, and it was harder in those other vehicles to find certain music I wanted to listen to. The auto climate control is a nice feature to have as well, adjusting the temperature to your desired degree. Memory settings are available to accommodate different drivers; awesome to have when more than one person regularly drives the car. And of course the popular hands free Bluetooth system. You can plug in your personal phone and the Equinox will upload all of your contacts on the navigation menu screen. You then recite who you want to call with the hands-free calling system and it will dial it for you to talk over speaker phone. So very convenient, safe, and wonderful to have. It’s the only way to talk “on the phone” while driving in my opinion. Plus, in many states, it is against the law to talk and drive. I’m sure it will be everywhere soon, so go ahead and do yourself a favor and get this feature! The drive was super smooth in the Equinox. This automobile consists of a six speed transmission, an optional V-6 265hp engine, and a considerable amount of leg room for a comfortable backseat ride. When the rear seat folds up, there is a huge amount of space offered surprisingly for a crossover vehicle of this size. In conclusion, the Equinox is a great value, as first stated. You receive many of the features more expensive SUVs have without paying the larger price tag for it. It is the perfect car for a single person, couple, or family of four. And the great fuel economy and safety structures (Onstar) are a gem of a find. 20 CLUTCH AUTO M AG

Jeep Grand Cherokee By Jenny Boyer / Photos by Justin Engel

personal 2002 Sequoia. SUVs have come a long way indeed. The best safety feature of this car is the blind spot recognition. Not once did I hesitate to switch lanes on the interstate. If a car was in my blind spot, a small orange triangle lit up on the side mirror that specific car was on, and I knew to wait a second to get over. Older SUVs and even some new ones are harder to make that easy crossover in lanes with. One might can look in the rearview and side mirrors and attempt to look out the back, most likely not getting a clear view with the headrests. I know I have almost switched lanes before when I shouldn’t have. For obvious reasons, this is a wonderful new safety feature that I am sure will slowly eliminate problems that have risen from that in the past. The Jeep is rugged, yet sexy all at the same time. Takes a pretty brilliant person to make that happen. Great advances are constantly being made in automobiles, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee progressing with the most rewarded SUV ever. Great job Jeep. ▲

I had the priviledge of driving this car to the mountains earlier this week, and I must say it is certainly an impressive car. This sleek SUV delivers an extremely smooth ride, gripping the road around every turn. Mother Nature decided to hand my coworker and I rain most of the first day we were on the road. A definite disappointment when you are going to visit the best mountain destinations in the Carolinas. However, due to that rain, I was able to see just what the Jeep contained. Ascending over 5,000 feet in more than unpleasant weather on treacherous mountain roads did not stop this Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Selec-Terrain Traction Control system allows you to choose your best driving experience and needs on any and all terrains. The turning radius on this new Cherokee is astounding. No more making huge u-turns due to your SUV . It made driving in the rain a piece of cake! With the climate being what it was, it was also nice to have automatic wipers that controlled if the speed needed to pick up or slow down, as well as automatic lights. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has an interior I tend to favor over the other SUVs I drove. The brown leather on the Overland is very calming, simple, yet sleek. Multiple storage compartments were available, as well as ventilated and heated seats, a spacious back seat, and plenty of trunk room. The Cherokee has the navigation screen, as most all SUVs do, however, it was sometimes a bit hard to pilot, along with the GPS being inaccurate both times I tried using it. GPS systems can usually be updated; that might be all that is needed. As a chick who loves her music, the sound was crisp and the base boomin. The listing of every track name on CDs made finding the exact track I wanted very easy and minimally consuming. When the sun decided to shine the second day, while heading to Biltmore, the panoramic moonroof delivered a gorgeous view and gave a large air of openness. As you can see, plenty of great features anyone could love. An impressive thing about the Cherokee is the 5.7 V-8 engine, and how it works to conserve gas and efficiency. Depending on your traveling speed and conditions, the Jeep will deactivate four of it’s eight cynlinders in 0.04 secs for maximum proficiency. V-8 engines can be and have been pretty costly on gas. It does not have to be anymore though with the Jeep. It cost me $72.00 to fill up at $3.45/gal and lasted almost 2 days; I was driving nonstop for the good part of both days. I never would have made it that far in my

Ford outdid themselves on many levels this year with the new 2012 Ford Explorer. Personally, the features catered more to my needs than any other vehicle. There were more options and characteristics other cars did not have. Other dealers admittedly agreed the Explorer was ahead on options available in certain regards. Here is why… Like others, the Explorer can include (with options if not standard) an 8” touchscreen system which controls navigation, weather, traffic, Bluetooth hands free phone, and music. However, Ford included another no other manufacturer has. Sports! (This is one I absolutely loved.) Have a favorite sports team or want to check scores? You program the teams and/or sports you want to follow, and you have all the latest updates, scores, and stats on them. Brilliant. All can be regulated with the Voice Activated controls, which has over 10,000 voice commands programmed in. If a cooler temperature is desired for the back seat, just command your vehicle to change it, and it does. No one ever has to take their eyes off the road for a split second to touch the screen. You can also voice-command the navigation system, which is huge. Gone can be the days when you have to stop and plug in an address in your GPS or on the touchscreen navigation. Command your Explorer where you want to go, and it will program it in the map for you. Huge stride for safety, if you ask me. Ford also boasts their 2.0L I-4 Ecoboost engine this year. This maximizes fuel efficiency taking an Explorer without that engine option from 18/25 mpg to 20/28 mpg. The Ecoboost also delivers the performance of a larger engine. Another large stride for Ford this year is an industry first, offering inflatable rear seatbelts in the back rows. Ford.com stated consumers had reported these being more comfortable which could encourage safety belt usage. Inflatable belts help distribute any crash or force evenly throughout the upper torso to help reduce the risk of injury (www.ford.com). The Ford Explorer was a favorite of mine. With having children, I feel this would likely be a great family vehicle for us. The optional refrigerator in the back was even tempting! Hello… road trips minus numerous stops for snacks or drinks! Haven’t figured out how that would stop the frequent bathroom stops, though. The Explorer seats up to seven, has a power-fold third row seat (great for women), power liftgate, keyless entry keypad, Intelligent 4WD combined with the Terrain Management System, along with much more. I highly recommend this to any man or woman, specifically those with a family. You will not be disappointed. W I N TE R 201 1 /201 2 A

The Cadillac Escalade is in a class of its own, being the top luxurious full size SUV. It boasts a 6.2L 403hp V8 engine with a six speed automatic transmission. It was hard to remember I was driving such a large car with the power it had. Multiple packages are available for the 2012 Escalade; platinum being the finest. Some features in this package include a 5.1 Bose surround sound system, heated and cooled cup holders, 22” chromed aluminum wheels, dual front headrest DVD screens with a rear entertainment system totaling 4 LCD screens, leather wrapped trim, and more. My children were ecstatic that everyone riding in either seat in the back could see a screen to watch their movies. And with the headsets attached… what a quiet ride. Base model starts at $63,000 and goes up to around $80,000. One thing I noticed that could use improvement was that the steering seemed a little too loose. The car could be turned a millimeter and you felt it in the steering and ride. Besides that, and a price tag your average Joe can’t afford, all was good. The power and safety characteristics in this car match the high scale product Cadillac consistently delivers. Active Fuel Management detects when all eight cylinders are not needed and immediately drops to use only four to save on fuel. Typically the Escalade provides 13/18 MGP, which is about average for a large scale SUV. Onstar is standard with Cadillac vehicles, assisting with emergencies, stolen vehicle, and automatic crash response. Elements of the Escalade not available in other comparable SUVs are daytime running lights, wheel locks, remote vehicle start, front and rear bucket seats, pass-through rear seat, passenger lumbar support, rear seat audio controls, and adjustable pedals. The Cadillac Escalade demands attention everywhere it goes. It’s a monster of a truck with almost the power of a sports car. Mi2012 Cadillac Escalade nus all the extra pounds of vehicle you’re toting around, mind you. PLATINUM EDITION Extremely luxurious and one of a kind. I loved driving this car. I know if I owned one, my children would love it, too. They informed me it was time to get a new car after being in the Escalade. Starting MSRP $65,770ñ$85,095 From all the aspects of it not seen to the naked eye, to all the most minute qualities any child can see, the Escalade delivers. mummies Photos Courtesy of Discovery Place

Vampires and Werewolves may be taking over the movie screens this month, but the Mummies have invaded Charlotte. The Mummies of the World debuted on Friday, November 11th, at the Discovery Place. A truly unique exhibit, filled with the oldest mummies and artifacts ever discovered, is something to marvel. A 6,260 year old child mummy from Peru, which is dated 3,000 years before King Tut, is just the start of that this exceptional collection has to offer. Including artifacts from South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Egypt, this anthology is the largest exhibition of real human and animal mummies. On top of these 150 specimens, there are numerous related artifacts 28 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

from thousands of years. This exhibit showcases the revelation in scientific studies, and uses both interactive multi-media and modern science. Viewers will be given a new insight on how mummification works, and the differences each culture and civilization brought to the process. “We are excited to bring Mummies of the World to Charlotte,” said Marc Corwin, president of Mummies of the World Touring Company, LLC. “Most people think mummies come from Egypt and are wrapped, but mummies come from all over the world. The exhibition is changing centuries-old perceptions about what the general public thinks about mummies and providing insight into the lives and cultures of these ancient people. Inside every mummy is a story waiting to be told, and Mummies of the World is here to tell those stories.”

The exhibition will be supported throughout its run at Discovery Place with educational programming, including: • The Keeper (at The Stage) – Visitors can learn about the mysteries of mummification through this dramatic presentation focusing on one man’s duty to meticulously tend to the mortal remains of Russian revolutionary Vladimir Illyich Ulyanov, or ”Lenin”. Unlock the enigma of the “incorruptibles’ – the Saints and Martyrs whose preserved bodies did not decompose after death – a puzzle that still baffles scientists today. • The Peak of Preservation (at The Stage) – Guests will ponder the amazing science of “accidental mummification” through the legacy of George Mallory. In 1924, Mallory and Andrew Irvine were the first Europeans presumed to have died on Mt. Everest. Since then, more than 200 climbers have perished on the slopes of Everest, and remain on the mountain as mummies because of the environmental conditions. • Ancient Textile Creation –This special demonstration in the Museum will help visitors unravel various types of ancient clothing and textiles. Learn how ancient textiles were created and used, along with their cultural importance and how they compare to current natural and synthetic textile fibers in North Carolina. • Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs: This giant screen IMAX® film follows researchers and explorers as they piece together the archeological and genetic clues of Egyptian mummies. These traces of the past create a window into the fascinating and mysterious world of the pharaohs. (note: additional fee for IMAX films)

Still King of the Trail

THE TRAIL RATED JEEP WRANGLER Photo courtesy of Global Nomad The Wrangler is designed for those adventure seeking, thrill chasing, and outdoor loving drivers. A newly designed 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 engine gives this Jeep ten percent more torque and forty percent more power. This engine has 285 hp and reaches 0 to 60 twenty six percent faster. It is also attributed to giving the vehicle a boosted ten percent in fuel efficiency. The 4x4 design still remains stylish with classic Jeep signature styling, and the hard-top option makes the Wrangler perfect for any road trip. Also, the Infinity Premium Sound System with Sirius radio makes an awesome soundtrack for your next journey. The two-door Wrangler sport has a roomy interior, and the back seat has tons of leg space. One upset about this model is that it is impossible to get into the back seat. It’s almost like the Jeep needs a grab bar to assist passengers to climb in. The addition of the grab bar to the passenger side dash really helps when you take the Wrangler off-roading and you need something to hold on to. Also, the removable hardtop is an excellent feature. It cuts down on road noise and is very functional for bad weather. The only downside of this feature is the weight and space. Removing the top requires somewhere to

leave it; it won’t fold up nicely under the seat. Travelers should really plan out their trip and weather forecast if they want to venture without it. Fully equipped for safety, Wrangler features multistage from airbags, side airbags, body-on-frame construction, and a sport that with high-strength steel. While you may take this Jeep to some extreme measures, there’s no need to worry about safety or protection. Also available with navigation by Garmin and Sirius XM Travel link, you will never have to worry about getting lost or what the weather has in store for you. Some other great optional features of the Wrangler Sport include heated seats, automatic temperature control, and leather trimmed seats. It was easy to scale this Jeep up hills, through small creeks, and around the mountainside. It easily handled any task with ease, and still maintained a comfortable ride. There was only one small complaint, which, in reality should be expected. The gas mileage on these Wranglers is still not that impressive, despite the increase in ten percent fuel efficiency. While hopes were high, this is the only part of the experience that really did not meet up to our expectations. Overall, the 2012 Wrangler Sport was impressive and powerful. It is a must have for your next outdoor adventure. Just make sure there’s a gas station nearby.

Destinations For our fall issue, Clutch presents the top mountain destinations. Our lifestyle director and I took a two day trip to the beautiful mountain region of North Carolina in October 2011. We wanted to check out places to visit, that are featured in brochures and online, to see what exactly each place had to offer, then share our experiences with you. We started off I-85 and headed to Grandfather Mountain making our way around to multiple locations, all in close proximity of each other, to complete what we know can be a fun-filled, gorgeous, and memorable vacation for anyone. We sincerely hope you not only read the articles and view the beautiful pictures, but are able to one day explore and see, in person, all that we had the pleasure of taking in ourselves. In the following pages, please join us as Clutch takes you to the ultimate mountainous experience. By Jenny Boyer 38 C LUTCH AUTO MAG

As the winding road up the mountain began, we felt extremely thankful, that for our Grand Cherokee, the route is not a challenge. Instead, we enjoyed the view while the Jeep comfortably hugged the road. What can I say; it was a delight to the fullest. First thing, we made a stop at the Nature Museum just half way to the top. The museum is small, but provides interesting exhibits and facts about the region and its wildlife. We couldn’t forget about the famous Grandfather Mountain Fudge Shop, because we all need a little sweetness in our lives. Everything there is freshly made with many flavors to taste and options to pick out a favorite. So, of course we didn’t resist and got some to enjoy on the hike along with a little something for our friends to try. Somehow, eating a fresh piece of delicious fudge tasted so much better while surrounded by peaceful nature. Crisp fresh air truly reconnected us with nature while on the trail we hiked from the Mile High Swinging Bridge. At the Swinging Bridge gift shop we found some eye-catching mineral stone jewelry that can complete any casual or cocktail party outfit. In addition, we browsed through lots of amusing collectibles to choose from to remind us of this fun getaway. As we were walking out, a hanging picture of a racecar driver got our attention. A picture of none other, but one of North Carolina’s most famous racecar drivers, Dale Earnhardt, on top of Grandfather Mountain with a big smile. After coming down the mountain, we suddenly realized that nothing sounded better than a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with a fresh pastry and a cozy fireplace. We made a pit stop at the Mountain Grounds Coffee and Tea Company shop. The perfect place to kick back, get warm, and email a few brand new scenic pictures to those still stuck in the city. There was no way to go unsatisfied with their amazing selection of teas and coffees from all over the world. Time flew by so quickly that day. Before we knew, the sun started setting and we still had a short drive to Asheville to settle in. We wanted to rest up, because the next day Biltmore estate was on our list.

BILTMORE Biltmore Estate & Winery By Alina Williams

In the morning, after a cup of coffee, we were ready for a new adventure. As we pulled up to the main entrance, we were politely greeted and shown the way to the proper parking area. Together we hopped out of our beloved Jeep and grabbed our cameras with child-like anticipation to dive into Biltmore’s empire of elegant style. That first glance from a distance at the estate only speaks one word – magnificence! Families and couples passing by us seemed just as excited as we were. Inside, once again we were welcomed by friendly staff and cheerful music. Even though we have already visited Biltmore some years ago, we still got a whole new appreciation for all that it has to offer during the holiday season. It really shows that great time and effort was put into carefully keeping the estate well preserved without taking away the history. For those of us who are not big history buffs, we can still learn a few fascinating things about the Vanderbilt’s Era and their lifestyle. One of the most amazing things about the estate was how everything was so well thought out and balanced. Yes, this house has 250 rooms, and all of the rooms have a unique color scheme that flows so tastefully complimenting one another. Honestly, every living space drew out inspiration for me, and I suddenly got the urge to redecorate my own place. The Vanderbilts really thought of everything. The purpose of the rooms was designed to serve as a sanctuary.

Certainly Biltmore doesn’t offer anything less than the best for their visitors as far as providing the finest shopping atmosphere. Enticing scents of freshly brewed teas and ciders filled the shop accompanied by samples of their salad dressing, party dips and desert dips. So, we took our merry time and delightfully sampled everything. My favorites ended up being their fast and easy to make (add two ingredients) party dips. Right outside in the court yard of the shops we sat down very satisfied with our purchases and munched on some pizza. Next on our list were the gardens and of course the Biltmore winery. The overlooks from the garden area were even better than we imagined. At this time of the year all the different colors of trees resembled a beautiful Persian carpet. Jasmine and Aladdin would get jealous. At the winery after an informative tour we wanted to get to the main event and try something from their selection. The knowledgeable staff made our decision process easier from all the wine choices. Just a sip of their Pinot Noir put me in a festive mood. Its fresh, lightly sweet aroma was an excellent reminder: “Life is good!”. With the holidays right around the corner, we knew we needed more than a couple bottles of wine. We bought two cases, one of red, another white, to stock up for family gettogethers. Once again our Jeep came to our rescues and we were able to fit in everything with our entire luggage. It was time to say goodbye to the gorgeous estate to get back home with our pleasant memories.

ASHE We have Biltmore listed in our top mountain destinations. However, we wanted to do a separate feature on the city of Asheville alone. There is so much more to this town other than the grand estate that lies in the heart of Asheville. I have been to Asheville a number of times in my life, and I discover new things there each and every visit and fall in love with this adorable town all over again. One of the first things you will notice in Asheville, obviously, are the mountainous roads. Around every bend, places are available to check out! This city is known to be an extremely “artsy” town, and rightfully so. Folk art is prevalent with galleries and museums galore. Pack Square, marking the center of downtown, includes restaurants, an outdoor café, live music, an art museum, coffee shop, and clubs. A mainstay in the center of Asheville’s art district. visitors from all around come here to relax among the cool, crisp air and sunshine. 48 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

The Western North Carolina Nature Center is an awesome place to take the children. Animals such as deer, foxes, bears, wolves, bobcats, and cougars are free to see. There are even snakes, turtles, and more to hold! It is inexpensive and can be very educational for your child. A “hands on” approach is taken in the nature and educational farm, with your child learning as they create those “Kodak moments” for the parent. Malls, The Historic Riverside Cemetery, the views, the community… everything in Asheville is relaxing and peaceful. Downtown is lit up with tiny white lights lining the tops of the buildings, like a mini version of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Park your car, grab a sweater or coat, and walk around at night to take it all in, talk to locals, and visit charming Asheville. You may just not want to leave. And make sure to visit Biltmore while you’re there to complete your stop. W I N TE R 201 1 /201 2 A

Linville Gorge By Jenny Boyer / Photo courtesy Linvillefalls.com

“The Grand Canyon of North Carolina”, as it is called, is a sight to see. This is a destination for camping, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, fishing, and hunting--such a magnificent place to take in nature at its fullest. Much daily maintenance work is required so each visitor can soak up the land and see no trace of things manmade. Linville Gorge consists of 39 miles of trail around the Linville River, and is part of the Pisgah National Forest, as well as near the Blue Ridge Parkway. For beginning hikers to the most experienced, there is a trail just for you. www.ncnatural. com lists the multiple trail names and the level of difficulty. That means you have no excuse not to go! Pack up the family or go with a significant other; it’s a trip like none other. It’s honestly quality family time, and an experience the kids will never forget. Linville Gorge was named after explorer William Linville and his son who were killed by Cherokee Indians in the gorge in 1766. As you travel around the gorge, there is much Indian heritage and history all around you. Take a hike to Wiseman’s view or rock climb at Table Rock. The sights you will see during your journey are completely breathtaking. I was in awe standing there myself, looking out at nature around me. “I’m not in shape!” some of you 5 0 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

may say to yourselves. I know I have in the past. For those who don’t consider themselves to be in shape though for the more difficult trails, there are so many easy trails to follow without strain. And it is so worth the effort. There are just certain experiences in life you can’t trade and might never get again. This is one of those, in my opinion. It’s hard to believe this is out there in our state when you’re caught up in the daily hustle and bustle. Do you all really know what magnificent sights we have right here in North Carolina? I’ve lived here about 25 years, and had never been to many of the mountainous locations I visited for these reviews. I figured, stereotypically and ignorantly of course, that many of these spots were for the best in shape, the outdoorsy type, the rough it and tough it type. I’ll admit…. I was wrong, and so glad to be. Such inner peace floods you as you sit in nature. Linville Gorge is miles from Grandfather Mountain; much to do for a weekend getaway. Go visit one of the largest wilderness areas in North Carolina and soak it all in. Warning: No vehicles are allowed in wilderness areas. So, no, you can’t drive through it. (So don’t think it!) Just trust me and head to the mountains for a weekend. I guarantee you’ll make it an annual thing.

BOONE

On a mountain getaway, make sure you stop in Boone, North Carolina

By Jenny Boyer / Photo courtesy of the Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau On a mountain getaway, make sure you stop in Boone, North Carolina. Named after Daniel Boone, who spent much of his time here, the town was established in 1872; Appalachian State University was added in 1899. I visited Boone personally for the first time a couple of months ago. What a quaint, nice town it was. Appalachian State dominates much of the city, which adds to the charm, making it a close, focused community. If you think this could just be a party city though, you are wrong. There is much to do there for the entire family. Gem mining is popular in Boone, with the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine being a favorite. Small kids to teenagers to adults enjoy dissecting the buckets they purchase to see all the goodies that wait inside. Numerous beautiful stones and gems are obtainable with many possibilities of things to do with them. Bookends, rings, jewelry, and much more can be purchased and made into a keepsake for you to remember forever. Various places are located throughout Boone and surrounding towns to hike, kayak, raft, canoe, and go caving. River and Earth Adventures, Inc. is a well-known location to do all this! Connect with nature and take in all the magnificent beauty around you, and have a blast while doing it! It’s sure to be a trip you remember forever. And while you’re there, make sure to visit the Stick Boy Bread Company. All locals as well as visitors will tell you how pleasing and tasty this place is. Pastries, bread, basically anything to satisfy that sweet tooth is available. Make sure you get extra to take back to friends or family while you’re there! General stores, theatres, and even the original Wendy’s restaurant are in Boone. The drive up the mountain to get there is astonishing. It is a very curvy drive for sure, but one without a doubt worth taking. Stop along overlooks and have your camera ready. Autumn leaves abound in fall, which is my favorite time to go. If you go in the winter, have that SUV ready to grip the snowy roads. Check them out in our “Top Ten SUVs” articles in this issue!

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY By Jenny Boyer / Photo courtesy of the Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau

There is just no other drive like it. You have to remind yourself to pay attention to the road, due to all the breathtaking views around every corner. Extending 469 miles through North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, this is an adventure you must experience when you plan your North Carolina mountain getaway. The Blue Ridge Parkway was created to construct jobs to boost employment during the Great Depression, starting in 1935, and finally completed in 1983. Farms from all different cultures of people were bought for the use of building this magnificent parkway. Much history and tradition lies in these lands from the Cherokee Indians, African Americans, and European Americans. As you explore the Parkway, there are many opportunities to take in the richness of the land and learn about this iconic history. What a sight the Parkway is to see as you drive it during the fall months. Nine different camp grounds are available, if you wish to camp, for only $16 a night. Every camp ground sits at a minimum of 2000 feet elevation, with Waterrock Knob being a favorite. The Blue Ridge Parkway Association cites this as one of the great stops to watch a sunrise or sunset, due to it sitting at 6,000 feet elevation. Moses H. Cone Park is the Parkway’s largest camp ground with a craft center, family cemetery, apple barn, and carriage trails. Restrooms and such are available to make it a more comfortable camping experience for novices. Mount Mitchell sits along the parkway at 6,684 feet elevation, being the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Hikers come from all around to climb and take in the unbelievable atmosphere at the peak of this mountain. Rock climbing, fishing, and bicycling are also activities participated in by many making their trip along this Parkway. We’ve covered many destinations around the North Carolina Mountains, many minutes from each other. The Blue Ridge Parkway extends through Boone, Asheville, Linville Gorge, and Grandfather Mountain, all places we have chosen to highlight in our “Top Mountain Destinations”. I can’t say enough about this trip, and all that I felt while driving, hiking, or visiting each location. Make the Parkway a priority when you go. Give your family a trip they will never forget. Learn about our North Carolinian heritage, see animals and creatures you’ve never seen, and don’t put it off any longer! I am amazed, now that I’ve been all these places, that I have lived here 25 years and hadn’t been yet. I am so ready to get back and take my children. I know when I go again I am looking forward to a fun, yet relaxing and peaceful trip many places don’t offer. You don’t need a lot of money to bond with nature. And I guarantee you will walk away richer and with more than you could ever get anywhere else.

The Great Smoky Mountains By Jenny Boyer / Photos courtesy of National Park Services

What a beautiful and magnificent place the Great Smoky Mountains are. With over 800 square miles of park, there is something around every corner to see and experience. I was blessed enough to be able to visit here in the peak part of fall, when the trees are changing all sorts of various, stunning colors. It would honestly take your breath away, as it did mine, to stand at a peak of the mountains and look around you. The Great Smoky Mountains have thousands of years of history, dating back to Indians and early European settlers in the 1800s. It is the largest protected park on this side of the Mississippi River. Over 17,000 documented species of creatures have been found in the park along with 100 species of trees, all of which help fall be glorious to view and take in. www.nps.com states that scientists estimate some 1,500 black bears reside in the forest. There is even a disclaimer on the website stating how important it is not to feed the bears. I sure wish I had been able to see one myself. White tailed deer, elk, bobcats, and birds are just a few of the many animals you could see along trails. The Smoky Mountains are called “The Salamander Capital of the World” consisting of 24 species of lung-less salamanders amongst the amphibians found in the region. There is much for any family to do in the Smoky Mountains. I found out they have a ranger led programs for adults and children alike to explore and learn about the nature around them. Bicycling, camping, fishing, hiking, and my favorite, horseback riding are all activities on the schedule of events for the mountain park. Noth-

ing is more peaceful to me than riding a horse gracefully through the mountains on a beautiful day. This would give you memories you’d remember for a lifetime. The photo opportunities are outrageous as well. I can’t tell you how many pictures I took when I was there. Even the drive in the car through the mountains has you wanting to snap away pictures through the car glass. There’s so much to take in, you want to capture every second of it. As you and your family or significant other plan for your mountain getaway, make the Great Smoky Mountains is on your map of places to go. There are many close places and accommodations to stay very near here. Don’t miss out. Go bond with nature and the bears. Seriously! You’ll never forget it. And yes, it’s all safe there. CL U TCH MY DREAM CAR

This is my dream car By Natasha / Photo courtesy of Land Rover

6 2 CLUTCH AUTO MAG

While preparing for this issue, I received one email that immediately caught my attention. A colleague sent me a one line email with one link attached. “This is my dream car.” I had to pause and make sure I had read it correctly. I hear a lot about cars and the automotive world on a daily basis, and am used to men staring as I drive by in the latest car I am reviewing. However, I am not used to men in this industry swooning over a car. They always have to find one thing about it that isn’t up to par. So, I was dying to know what this man could possibly be sending me. Expecting this link would take me to a super high-tech undeveloped prototype to be released in 2035, I was floored when I realized I was looking at a 1985 Land Rover One Ten. I wasn’t sure how serious to take this anymore. Then I really started researching what is now known as the Land Rover Defender. In 1948 Land Rover launched its first four wheel drive offroad utility vehicle. This British company started the Land Rover Series, and in 1983 premiered Land Rover One Ten. The numbers were spelled out in full, and reflected the inches of the wheel base. These monster machines are what put Land Rover on the map as private leisure vehicles. With a newly redone interior, permanent four-wheel drive system, a full-length bonnet, and coil springs, Land Rover was able to steer their market past the utility aspects of the car. After the One Ten, they introduced Ninety and 127. These models maintained impeccable off-road ability, and were upgraded for better handling and driving ease. The One Ten engine packed some serious punch. A 2.5 litre engine and 68 hp made this car unstoppable. Both the One Ten and Ninety were outfitted with a timing belt in replacement of the original engine chain. The V8 engine was modified in 1985, and was now equipped with a four cylinder engine. Now

with 83 hp and an added full-injection the driving performance was tremendously enhanced. These features allowed the One Ten for reach speeds over 100 mph for the first time. With thirty percent more power, it could now reach 0-60 in 11.9 seconds. Customer surveys about this car revealed its appeal to a higher end market, and after two years Range Rover North America was introduced. In 1993 Land Rover released the Defender to North America. It all became very clear to me. The 1985 Land Rover One Ten was very worthy of being an automotive enthusiast’s dream car. Land Rover, a once strictly utility company changed its concept with this model and recreated what people thought of them. One Ten was a bridge from functional to luxury, and the 1985 model is a staple in Land Rover history. This vehicle is more than transportation; it is a man’s version of a work of art. However, if I had my choice, I would aim for the 1992 Limited Edition 90SV Defender, mostly because it is turquoise with a black canvas soft top. The SV90 is cute, and they only made 90 of this model. Of course I want it! If the Land Rover One Ten is your dream car as well, you need to check out Berkshire Land Rover. Berkshire is the Land Rover specialist and was recently featured on the Discovery Channel on an autumn episode of “Wheeler Dealers. They are known for Defender conversions, restorations, and custom builds. While this company is based in UK they export their one of a kind Land Rovers to the US and Canada. They have a massive selection of cars, and if you can’t find the one you are looking for, they will find it for you. Berkshire offers specialized services to transform your Land Rover into a custom built machine perfect for your lifestyle. Maybe they can track me down the illusive SV90. Visit them online at berkshirelandrover.com

What’s your dream car? Email me, Natasha@pinklimomag.com, and maybe I will feature your dream car in our next issue.

Miss Charlotte USA 2011

Jody McLaughlin Photos by JMT and Carter Photography

HIGH BEAMS

My previous experience with pageants had been Miss Congenitally, Little Miss Sunshine, and Toddlers and Tiaras. Obviously, even reflecting on them terrified me. I was convinced that these girls competing were self-absorbed, mindless, crazies. Not to mention, I was even more afraid of their mothers. My judgments were based on Hollywood and Tabloids. Luckily, I have the privilege of knowing a very amazing woman who has taught me something new. This summer a friend asked me if I would be interested in doing hair and make-up for Miss Charlotte USA. Honestly, I laughed in his face. While I always welcome a new client and a chance to help someone with their overall look, it was going to take some serious persuading to get me to wade into the pageant world. He was effusive that the woman he was going to put me in contact with was the most down to earth, sweet, and kindhearted human being I would ever meet. While still skeptical, I agreed to meet her and see what was on the table. I met Jody McLaughlin at South Park Mall one evening in early August. I am pretty sure I was the most nervous person in the entire world and was out of my element in expectations. I remember looking up from my planner and thinking this has to be Miss Charlotte. A petite, long curly-haired brunette walked up to me and introduced herself as Jody McLaughlin. The second she spoke my apprehension about the situation quickly faded. This sweet soft spoken Miss was everything my friend had proclaimed and I was more than happy to help her. Over the past few months I have experienced all the things that Jody accomplishes. While still working a fulltime job, she was preparing for the Miss North Carolina USA pageant, as well as constantly using her crown and title to volunteer what seemed to be all of her free time. Most people know a 40-hour plus work week is enough, but I watched her handle more tasks in these past four months than I have seen people handle in a year. I would have never realized how much work these women put into pageants, charities, and events.

6 6 C LUTCH AUTO MAG

Hands On Charlotte is a volunteer organization that benefits from Jody’s constant support and event attendance. This organization has a network of over 240 affiliates and offers over 100 volunteer projects each month. I honestly was impressed by Jody’s initiative with Hands On Charlotte. It shed light on the fact that her crown and sash were not just a beauty contest. She uses her Miss title to give back to the community on a daily basis, and is always talking to me about more things she wants to get involved in. Jody and I became fast friends, and when she was telling me about her pageant I could not wait to go see her compete. I rallied the team and we set off to High Pointe, NC to watch Jody in her quest to become Miss NC USA 2012. I received some serious preparations on what to expect, the differences between Miss USA and Miss America, how placing worked, and all kinds of information I still don’t fully comprehend. Once we were there, I realized that Miss Congeniality, Little Miss Sunshine and Toddlers and Tiaras were not too exaggerated when it comes to the pageant itself. I was stunned and in awe of the crowd, the girls competing, the mothers, and the whirlwind of events. Our staff had such a great time at this event and very quickly became part of the excitement. I’m pretty sure it was evident to other attendees that we were pageant newbies, but we loved every second of the festivities. I know I am biased but Jody looked amazing at the pageant. I wish I could say that it was just my hair styling skills, but she was stunning from head to toe. From what I have been told we also witnessed a pageant first! The judges were so impressed by the contestants this year that they chose a top twenty instead of a top fifteen. This, to no one’s surprise, included Jody. While she did not win Miss NC USA, she is still using her Miss Charlotte title to make the city a more radiant place. As promised, this woman is sweet, charismatic, and completely down to earth. I am very grateful that she gave me a glimpse into this world that once seemed daunting. She took me from Little Miss Sunshine to reality.

CL U TCH SOUND SYSTEM

EDITOR’S PIECE

HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD?

THE BEST DRIVING PLAYLIST I was determined to come up with my own awesome driving playlist for this holiday season. We all know I am a house junkie, so I was avidly searching for my new tracks online. My least favorite part about the end of October is that the classic holiday tunes are on everywhere. While I respect holiday music, I’m always searching for something different. I was expecting hours of searching, and was floored when I stumbled into this website called Santastic4.com. This website had links for 18 holiday songs that this guy, dj BC, compiled from DJs all over the world. Never heard of him, but I realized I could preview the tracks and had them playing while I was digging through the rest of the site. Some of the tracks literally had me falling out of my chair laughing and some just made me want to dance. I forgot my whole normal concept of “my playlist” and was like this kid made my playlist for me. This kid deserves this article. I immediately was emailing ODDIO telling him to go listen to these tracks and that he should buy this mix for holiday shows he’s djing in town. While flipping between the emails and website, I realized that you can download the whole album for free. This dj BC made my afternoon awesome, and was looking for ways to contact him. My excitement about this Santastic4 find blinded me to the fact that there were actually SEVEN different albums that this guy had compiled over seven years. I don’t impress easily, but when this guy emailed me back in less than an hour, I was stunned. Icing on the cake, this DJ is in Atlanta. I have never met him, and had not heard of him until about six hours before writing this article. He convinced me without even speaking to me that his mashup albums were better than any holiday remix playlist I would ever create. So, dj BC is an Atlanta-Based Mashup DJ who runs this sweet mashup party called Bootie ATL. Bootieatl.com. He is best known for his mashup albums such as “The Beastles” (The Beatles and Beastie Boys), “Wu Orleans”(Wu Tang vs New Orleans Music),

6 8 C LUTCH AUTO M AG

and “The Santastic Collection” (my new obsession). He has been putting out the “Santastic” holiday album for seven years straight now. A few years ago there was a “Menorah Mashup” which is why it’s only Santastic 6. He compiles these albums, and all the tracks are unofficial releases, none are cleared by the artist. Collection of these holiday mashups and remixes are from artists around the world, and he is connected with bootiemashup.com. After really looking into these albums, I went on to explore what was Bootie ATL. They get immediate props for an awesome website, but the idea of what they do is really sweet too. It’s once a monthly party in Atlanta and the location changes frequently. The whole night is devoted to bootleg mashups. This isn’t just an ATL exclusive event; these Bootie parties are held in several cities on four continents. And I am sure a lot of you are thinking the same thing I was, is this legal? They address this question on their website; their response is, “Does the skull-and-crossbones in our logo mean anything to you?” The cool thing about this means you can’t buy these mashups in a store. Most of the DJs involved in Bootie post their stuff that you can download for free. There are also two “A Very Bootie Christmas” albums. I hope you all are as thrilled with dj BC and the Santastic collection as much as I am. Don’t worry though; next issue will be back to my driving playlist for the month. Also, keep an eye out for the Editors Blog we will be adding to our website. You will be able to get pieces of my daily life with Clutch, some sweet backstage footage, and a little insight to the millions of things I’d love to fit in each issue, but, well, I’m saving the rain forest. Special thanks to Hamilton Hollett // DJ ODDIO for supporting my impulsive crazy lifestyle and helping me with this segment. Come see him DJ at our Official Launch Party, December 10, 2011 at BUTTER in the NC Music Factory.

Some of my favorite tracks from these albums: Jungle Bells (Bubba Clause Mix featuring Murder Bot) – DJ C Imagine Santa – dj BC Every Christmas You Fake – Divide & Kreate Christmas Bop – Smash Up Derby Santa Baby Remix – Alexkid & DJ Sleep Are You Gonna Stop The White Christmas – Bad Tattoo Seven Nation Santa – Smash Up Derby Insane in the Winter Wonderland – DJ Flack Whoville, Won’t Get Yuled Again – Mojo Chronic I want a Gucci Dreidle – ATOM Sugar Plum Fairy Coda (dj BC recoda) – DJ BC O Chanukah Dubstep Baseline Remix – DJ Flack
