The annual appeal – now in its 31st year – will see families up for “adoption” by individuals, businesses, clubs, schools, families and workplaces. Items will be collected such as toys and non-perishable food items and made into a Christmas hamper for young families, single parents and pensioners facing financial hardship. LEFT: MALONE, a louisiana catahoula leopard cross pup from the RSPCA animal campus. The RSPCA is asking people to think carefully before buying an animal as a Christmas gift.

Ask yourself

DO I want a puppy or an adult dog? Can I cover all the financial costs of owning a dog, beyond just the purchase price, including food, bedding, toys and veterinary check-ups and treatment including emergencies? The average dog costs $2000 a year to keep. Is my home safe, secure and suitable for a dog? Do I have time to train and socialise a dog? Will I be able to provide them with enough company so they don’t get lonely or bored? A dog that doesn’t receive enough attention is unlikely to become a social and well-behaved pet. Do I have time to walk and play with a dog every day? Am I ready to make a 15-year commitment?

Is a puppy the right gift? PEOPLE NEED TO CONSIDER CAREFULLY, WITH THE PROSPECTIVE OWNER, BEFORE JUMPING IN AND GETTING A PET AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT.

SAN Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy is back. It is 1979, and Ron and Veronica are still together and still co-anchors of the national news. However, Ron takes up a position as a late-night anchor for a 24-hour cable news network and needs his Channel Four news team to reunite and to do whatever it takes to deliver the ratings and return to primetime. See it first at Birch Carroll and Coyle, advanced screenings on December 18.

Director: Pierre De Lespinois, Neil Nightingale FOR the first time in movie history, audiences will truly see and feel what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Walking with Dinosaurs is the ultimate, immersive, big-screen, 3-D experience. Recent discoveries and a breakthrough in technology will introduce new and unique dinosaurs that are more real than ever before, and put moviegoers in the middle of a thrilling prehistoric adventure, where an underdog dinosaur triumphs against all odds.

WHEN Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book, P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins, he made them a promise – one that he didn’t realise would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against an uncompromising writer who has no intention of letting her beloved, magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling, Travers reluctantly agrees to hear Disney’s plans.

NO one likes the after effects of NYE overindulgence: a jackhammer headache, dry mouth, sensitive hearing and a ravenous desire for oily foods. First of all, drink plenty of water throughout the night. But like most of Australians who spend New Year’s Day in recovery mode, here are some tips to help your sorry self through: n Fried food is a fool’s cure, it only makes you feel better briefly before nausea ensues. n Drink plenty of water to replenish your body. Avoid the “hair of the dog”, soft drinks and energy drinks. n Toast and crackers: There’s a good reason why mum gave you toast as a kid when you couldn’t keep other food down. Carbs will help bring your sugar levels up. n Exercise: While the “sweat it out” theory is a myth, the endorphin release could help to boost your mood. n Vitamins: research shows they won’t cure a hangover, but if you’re a regular taker of vitamins it won’t hurt to pop one.
