The Kirker Concierge has selected a few of his favourites below to help inspire your next holiday:

Madeira by Ignacio Foley ignacio.foley@kirkerholidays.com For those in search of a few days of reinvigorating winter sun, I can highly recommend the subtropical island of Madeira. Just four hours by air, it offers yearround warmth, wonderful walks along the old system of levadas, and is a paradise for horticulturalists – with a number of world-class gardens. There are several excellent hotels, but I stayed at the famous Reid’s Palace – a venerable landmark which is now looking better than ever. Summer special offer: book 45 days prior for stays from 26 April - 31 October 3 night price from £1,147, saving £183 staying at the 5* deluxe Reid’s Palace
Naples by Charlotte Phillips charlotte.phillips@kirkerholidays.com Spending a weekend in Naples was a surprising treat – I had never imagined it to be such a beautiful and intriguing city. Travellers over the summer usually head straight for the Amalfi Coast, but stay in Naples itself – especially during the winter months – and you will find an authentic city with great museums (the Archaeological Museum is a must-see), and delicious local cuisine – from pizza to Michelin-stars. 3 night price from £598, staying at the 4* deluxe Grand Hotel Parker’s
Tenerife
Morocco
by Giles Binnie
by Isabel Whitley
giles.binnie@kirkerholidays.com The hour’s drive from Tenerife South airport to the north of the island provides a natural contrast between the built-up South and the greenery of the North. Passing through Mount Teide National Park, I would recommend heading for the charming colonial village of Garachico, and Hotel San Roque 4*, a lovingly restored 18th century house, or nearby Puerto de la Cruz, home to the impressive Hotel Botanico 5*, surrounded by six acres of botanical gardens.
isabel.whitley@kirkerholidays.com My favourite place in Morocco is Essaouira, a charming coastal town about 100km (and a very easy drive) from Marrakech. Originally fortified by the Portuguese in the late 15th century, it is a delightfully unspoilt town with a bohemian feel, a long sandy beach, and an ancient medina of cobbled lanes and palm lined avenues. Stay at L’Heure Bleue, a luxurious Riad in the heart of the old town, where you can enjoy an al fresco breakfast in the courtyard and a heated rooftop pool.
4 nights for the price of 3 at the 5* Hotel Botanico until 30 April - price from £1,298, saving £175
4 nights for the price of 3 at the 5* L’Heure Bleue until 15 February and 6 May - 19 June - price from £798, saving £110
Sicily
Oman
by Rachel Pennycook
by Patrick Millar
rachel.pennycook@kirkerholidays.com We started our trip in Sicily in Taormina, a beautiful and historic town where we happily spent two days exploring with the aid of the Kirker Guide Notes. Whilst the highlight of any visit to Taormina is the incredibly well-preserved Greco-Roman theatre, with its stunning views of Mount Etna and the sea, one of our favourite discoveries was the Naumachia, a former Roman gymnasium which has been transformed into a peaceful garden.
patrick.millar@kirkerholidays.com Oman encapsulates the magic of the Arabian Peninsula but without the ‘bling’ of neighbouring Dubai. It is a fascinating, diverse and remarkably tolerant country with spectacular natural beauty: vast desert dunes give way to lush oases surrounded by date plantations, rugged mountain ranges conceal ancient fortresses, and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean are populated by dolphins and turtles.

Time Out with Ted My most recent explorations include two outstanding trips to Italy – firstly to the unspoilt Le Marche region and the handsome Renaissance hill-town of Urbino. Its Palazzo Ducale, home to the renowned Federico da Montefeltro, commands spectacular views and is now an excellent museum. What I enjoy about any visit to Italy is the way that (with the help of an expert local guide) one can join up the dots linking new places with more familiar favourites – in Urbino’s case, it was Federico’s striking double portrait (with his Duchess) by Piero della Francesca. This priceless diptych became a key part of the Uffizi’s collection in Florence, when (inevitably) one of the Duke’s descendants married into the supremely acquisitive Medici family. Secondly, I was fortunate enough to stop in Naples en route to the Amalfi Coast – where, apart from delicious food and wine, it was the extraordinary Archaeological Museum which drew me. The highlights here include treasures from Herculaneum and Pompeii which started life as the Farnese Collection and were inherited by the Bourbons. They moved to Naples in the late 18th century at about the time when Napoleon and Nelson became familiar figures in Neapolitan social circles. N.B.You should pre-book one of the Kirker Concierge’s private guides for at least half a day – Mrs Wake recommends the charming Antonella who greatly enhanced our visit. I would particularly urge you to find time to admire the remarkable beauty of Aphrodite Kallipygos, who entrances visitors from her quiet corner of the basement. This 1st century BC Roman statue (a copy of the Greek original), allows me to mention another link – to the Temple of Aphrodite Kallipygos in Syracuse… You won’t be surprised to learn that my next visit to Sicily has now been elevated to the top of the Wake wish-list…
Buon Viaggi!
