Orchestra of Opera North The Power and the Glory The season kicks off with a concert that captures all the energy and thrill of live music. Following the release of her début album devoted to Paganini, Francesca Dego lights the fireworks of the great violinist/composer’s romantic Violin Concerto No.1, packed with technical wizardry and musical panache. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is arguably the Russian composer’s best-known work, a masterpiece on which his life depended. A musical and political triumph, it simultaneously succeeded in appeasing Stalin’s government with its stirring, patriotic melodies, whilst creating music of such beauty and sorrow that it moved – and still moves – audiences to tears. The Kirklees season brings top international talent to your doorstep, and tonight is no exception. The remarkable musicianship of tenor Werner Güra and horn player Peter Francomb is combined in Britten’s exquisite Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, a series of six English poems about evening and night set to music wonderfully evocative of darkness and dreams. From the unmistakable opening bars of his Symphony No 40 in G minor, flows some of Mozart’s most emotionallycharged music; it’s easy to hear why this is one of the world’s most famous pieces. Conducted by Thomas Zehetmair in his final season as Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Music Director, Mozart’s romantic masterpiece provides the climax to what promises to be a very special evening. Tonight its untamed beauty is brought to life by talented young conductor Andrew Gourlay, named as Gramophone magazine’s ‘One to Watch’ in 2010. He is joined by renowned keyboard player Jonathan Scott who, with more than 20 recordings under his belt, is perfectly placed to play the harpsichord in Poulenc’s delightful Concert champêtre, another piece inspired by landscape. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is a grand orchestral work complete with sleighbells and solo soprano. This vibrant symphony is full of folk-like colour and glorious melodies and makes an ideal introduction to Mahler’s work. Orchestra of Opera North Austrian Classics Of his 104 symphonies, Haydn’s No. 52 is one of the neglected masterpieces. He never ceased to experiment, and he packed this symphony with wry humour and dramatic turns that constantly surprise and delight. Haydn’s influence can be heard in Mozart’s joyful Horn Concerto and his exuberant Symphony No 36, written in just four days as a thank you to friends hosting him and his young wife in Linz. Written in desperate times, when Strauss faced the impossible situation of appeasing the Nazis whilst trying to rescue Jewish family members, the Prelude to his final opera is a thing of sublime beauty and extreme emotion, here played by the full string section of the Orchestra of Opera North.
