Welcome to the Kirklees Concert Season 2011/12

Kirklees Concert Season 2011/12

After a year in which audiences were treated to many wonderful performances in each of the orchestral, organ and lunchtime chamber series, and with the partnership between Kirklees Council and Opera North reaffirmed, we launch the new season in good spirits and hope our programming this season will only build on that experience.

Thursday 22 September 2011 7.30pm Huddersfield

classic discovery

Our theme of Classic Discovery affirms our belief that hearing wonderful music live is always a special experience, especially when it is performed for you in a fabulous venue such as our Town Halls here in Huddersfield and Dewsbury. In the orchestral season our resident ensemble, the Orchestra of Opera North, continues its cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies and concertos, a cycle which we will now complete towards the end of 2012. The orchestra also finds time to mark two important anniversaries: the 100th Anniversary of Sir Robert Falcon Scott’s expedition reaching the South Pole, and, in a special extra concert in the season, the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our new relationship with Classic FM, the UK’s largest commercial radio station, which we launched last year has helped spread the word more widely than ever about the season and we are delighted that their support continues. More people listen to classical music across the UK through Classic FM than through any other medium. Once again we have selected four concerts that we think make ideal introductions to the power and variety of great classical music. If you’ve never tried one before, these ‘Classic FM recommends’ concerts are the perfect place to start; if you come already, how about bringing your friends? As ever we are delighted to be joined in the season by the wonderful musicians of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia and Manchester Camerata.

Orchestral concerts

Huddersfield and Dewsbury Talking Music: Before most of the concerts this year we’ll be Talking Music with some of our soloists and conductors, and members of the orchestra. Please see individual concerts for start times. We do hope you’ll be able to join us for some lively discussion about each performance.

Orchestra of Opera North The Organ Symphony French Maestro, Frédéric Chaslin, and our resident Orchestra launch the season in spectacular style in a programme full of Gallic romance and virtuosity – with a Yorkshire twist! Saint-Saëns’ ever-popular Organ Symphony is the perfect vehicle to showcase Huddersfield’s magnificent Father Willis instrument and, after the wonderful colours of Debussy and Ravel, we celebrate one of the great love stories with the World Première of Maestro Chaslin’s own Gypsy Dance from his opera Wuthering Heights. Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune

The organ and lunchtime chamber concerts continue to thrive and there is a wealth and breadth of music on offer, including, to open the Dewsbury lunchtime series, Voces8, who once again will show why they are widely recognised as Britain’s most exciting young vocal ensemble.

We hope that you will join us as often as possible in the year ahead for more world-class music-making on your doorstep.

Orchestra of Opera North Mozart and Beethoven

BBC Philharmonic The Dramatic Symphony

Orchestra of Opera North Mahler 5

Orchestra of Opera North Christmas

We open the season in Dewsbury with Mozart at his most romantic and Beethoven at his most classical. Mozart’s dramatic and impassioned Piano Concerto No. 20 was one of the works which most closely cemented the perception of him as the harbinger of the coming Romantic age. It’s set beside two of Beethoven’s most dramatic overtures and his most light-hearted symphony, full of Haydnesque high spirits.

Last season the BBC Philharmonic thrilled our audience with a magnificent performance of Mozart’s great Symphony No. 40 in G minor. This season they open with the so called ‘Little G minor’, but there’s nothing ‘little’ about this work. Written when the composer was just seventeen, it’s a full-blooded, stormy, dramatic symphony and a great prelude to Sibelius’ atmospheric concerto and Brahms’ final symphony. Brahms was a composer able to meld the classical architecture of the past with the rich expressiveness of his own era, and nowhere more so than in the work that crowned his symphonic career.

High octane virtuosity is promised with Opera North’s Music Director Richard Farnes returning to the season with Mahler’s glorious 5th Symphony. From the dramatic opening funeral march through the incomparably beautiful adagietto to the blazing glory of the final movement, this is a symphony which in every way fulfils Mahler’s aspiration to encompass a whole world of emotion in his works. International star Dmitry Sitkovetsky joins us for Samuel Barber’s sublime violin concerto.

This concert celebrates both Christmas and the wonderful music, old and new, that has been inspired by it. Borough Organist and consummate compère Gordon Stewart is at the helm and we are joined for the occasion by the Chorus of Opera North and, making their concert début, the newly formed Opera North Children’s Chorus. With the Christmas shopping out of the way(!) this joyous concert will be the perfect way to complete your seasonal preparations.

Orchestra of Opera North Scott of the Antarctic

Northern Sinfonia Young Genius

Orchestra of Opera North Beethoven and Dvorák

When Vaughan Williams wrote the music for the 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic he confirmed his status as one of the 20th century’s great film composers. His Sinfonia Antartica was written using themes from the film music, and retains much of the remarkable colour and drama of the original score. As our celebration of the 100th anniversary of the heroic quest of Scott and his men, we present this great work in a dramatised version with narrator and specially commissioned film using images from the original expedition. A unique, unmissable event.

Mendelssohn and Mozart vie for the title of ‘youthful genius’. Mendelssohn’s astonishing Octet was written when the composer was just 16, and Mozart wrote his Sinfonia Concertante at the ripe old age of 23. Mozart displays remarkable maturity in his writing for the solo violin and viola, and the slow movement of this work contains some of his most emotionally expressive music. The first of Mozart’s extraordinary final three symphonies, completed in just six weeks in the summer of 1788, rounds off a programme of peerless masterpieces from our great friends in Northern Sinfonia.

Our Beethoven Symphony and Concerto cycle continues with the welcome return of Maestro Bamert to conduct the sunny Symphony No. 2 in D alongside the most popular of his Romances for violin and orchestra. Complementing these masterworks is Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, the most popular of its kind composed in the Romantic era.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic The New World

Manchester Camerata From Salzburg to Paris

An evening of full blooded Russian Romanticism in a programme of flair, drama and character. A beautiful work displaying the myriad colours of French Impressionism, Liadov’s atmospheric Enchanted Lake makes for a refreshing contrast to the power and passion of Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. Two world-class artists, each renowned for their interpretations of this music, join our resident orchestra for what is sure to be a compelling evening of music-making.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic are firmly established as favourites with Kirklees audiences and this popular and accessible programme should be another hit. Dvorák’s New World Symphony is, rightly, an enormously popular classic. Of the finale of Mozart’s great C minor Piano Concerto, Beethoven said to a pupil: ‘You and I will never be able to write anything ˚ like that’. Czech specialist Jakub Hruša completes the programme with one of Smetana’s most entertaining tone poems.

We welcome the return of the Manchester Camerata to the season with a delightful programme, ideally suited to the perfect Dewsbury acoustic. Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 is a joyous work, full of youthful energy and widely regarded as one of his earliest masterpieces, composed when he was 18. Haydn’s Paris Symphonies are a remarkable fusion of brilliance, elegance, and warmth – perfect for springtime in Kirklees!
