TERM 4 Kirribilli – Sydney’s best neighbourhood!
1
Welcome to
Sydney’s best neighbourhood!
T
hanks for taking the time to read through the exciting array of programs and activities we have in store for you in term 4 at the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre, or KNC as it’s more commonly known. With a number of new additions to our bumper line-up there’s something in here for everyone. This term we’re excited to announce our community party which will be held in November, all the details are on the outside back cover. We also have our yarn bombing in early October – watch as the centre turns pink! There’re also new computer classes and more fitness classes, and lots of activities for the children. Our library has some incredible new books and our toy shed is lovingly restocked, thanks to an amazing team fundraising effort at the recent cake sale at the Kirribilli market. We’re also looking forward to another art exhibition – see page 7 for more details – after last term’s spectacular success in our stunning gallery. Whether you’re enrolling in one of our many and varied workshops or classes, hosting a club event, or just dropping by to admire our outdoor garden setting, or to enjoy our extensive library or playground, we hope to see you soon at the KNC. Our doors are always open for you to pop in and see what we’re about. If you arrive on Friday, you’ll also be able to enjoy a coffee, light lunch or some delicious baked goods at our popular on-site cafe, open from 10am-2pm weekly. Our friendly staff, or one of our volunteers who help make the KNC such a vital part of your community, are also only a phone call away to guide you. We are also on Facebook, which has daily and weekly updates of what’s on. Whatever your community interests, or background, it’s my goal as General Manager to make the KNC your first port of call. Have a safe spring and happy summer.

What’s great about
i l l i b i r r Ki
Kirribilli ART
FREE Exhibition
Anita from Sydney Flying Squadron
Being able to say hello to a familiar face when walking in the Kirribilli Shopping Centre. Being able to have choices in the fabulous restaurants and cafes. Kirribilli has a lovely village like atmosphere.
Chris Bell from Milson Executive
It continually amazes me to have found such a location as Kirribilli. Where else can you find a prime foreshore location that offers the perfect lifestyle for everybody, regardless of stage of life. While being walking distance to the CBD, but luckily overlooked by tourists, this peaceful community provides an abundance of day to day amenities and access to all arterial transport routes. It is totally understandable why Kirribilli’s unique location thrives with a balanced mix of first home buyers, growing families, and downsizers - not to mention some of the friendliest and dynamic personalities I’ve met.
Sam DiSano – Deputy College Principal St Aloysius College
I have been Deputy Headmaster at St Aloysius’ College since 2000 and have seen a wonderful transformation in Kirribilli in that time. My first impressions were of a fairly family unfriendly area with not much life to it either at night or on the weekends. All that seemed to have changed some eight or so years ago – sidewalk cafes began to spring up; where we rarely saw young children in the streets or anyone bar the elderly or professionals, we now see young families; mums pushing strollers, people walking dogs and families on the streets throughout the day and weekends. For coffee lovers, there is no limit to the choices and some of the eateries in the village along Broughton Street are as good as you will find anywhere on the lower north shore. We’re pretty proud to have a fairly positive relationship with the local community and having been a significant and iconic feature here on the harbour since 1901, we feel very much a part of an important heritage and local history. The feeling on a Saturday and Sunday morning too are of a thriving community. Our Sports complex brings families into the local area during the summer months and as a result the markets, the parks and the cafes are teeming with life. Everyone knows what a beautiful city Sydney is, and I am sure most would agree what a wonderful perspective you get from this side of the harbour looking out over the wharf and the bridge. It’s a very special place, one I enjoy being part of daily.

Inspiring Local
s n h o J l Grete We sit down with the wonderful Gretel, one of our much loved library volunteers. Gretel has been an instrumental part of our team and runs our library like a well-oiled machine.
How long have you been living locally? My grandmother brought the land in Kirribilli in 1906, so my grandchildren who still live in Kirribilli are the 6th generation of my family to live in the area.
How long have you been volunteering at KNC? Since October 2010.
Who do you like about being a volunteer?
I enjoy working with books. There’s always something to do in a library; helping people find a book they like, adding donations to the shelves, tidying the volumes. This provides me with an almost endless supply of reading matter. I enjoy the social contact with library users, staff at the centre and with the other volunteers. In addition I feel
that I am giving something back to the community and being useful.
What benefits do you think having a neighbourhood centre offers locals? KNC provides a venue for a diverse and valuable range of activities and services and is a vital focal point for the area.
What do you like most about being par t of the KNC team?
Feeling a part of the community and being able to participate in the life of the community.
What is your advice to others wanting to become a volunteer? Go for it!
What is your top tip for anyone thinking of being a volunteer?
Find something to do that interests you so that you will enjoy it as well as doing work that is rewarding and valuable.
A few words from you to our locals about our KNC library
The library has a huge range of books, reference works, biography and autobiography, mysteries, novels, children’s books, science fiction – and the
list goes on. So please do come in and see us, and join if you haven’t yet done so. Gretel is an extremely important member of KNC, who we hold in very high regard. It is with much pleasure and delight that we showcase Gretel as our ‘inspiring local’. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Gretel for her hard work and dedication.
